Anisotropic Pressures in Very Dense Magnetized Matter

The problem of anisotropic pressures arising as a consequence of the spatial symmetry breaking introduced by an external magnetic field in quantum systems is discussed. The role of the conservation of energy and momentum of external fields as well as of systems providing boundary conditions in quantum statistics is considered. The vanishing of the average transverse momentum for an electron-positron system in its Landau ground state is shown, which means the vanishing of its transverse pressure. The situation for neutron case and Strange Quark Matter (SQM) in $β$-equilibrium is also briefly discussed. Thermodynamical relations in external fields as well as the form of the stress tensor in a quantum relativistic medium are also discussed. The ferromagnetic symmetry breaking is briefly discussed.

Magnetized strange quark matter and magnetized strange quark stars

Strange quark matter could be found in the core of neutron stars or forming strange quark stars. As is well known, these astrophysical objects are endowed with strong magnetic fields which affect the microscopic properties of matter and modify the macroscopic properties of the system. In this paper we study the role of a strong magnetic field in the thermodynamical properties of a magnetized degenerate strange quark gas, taking into account beta-equilibrium and charge neutrality. Quarks and electrons interact with the magnetic field via their electric charges and anomalous magnetic moments. In contrast to the magnetic field value of 10^19 G, obtained when anomalous magnetic moments are not taken into account, we find the upper bound B < 8.6 x 10^17 G, for the stability of the system. A phase transition could be hidden for fields greater than this value.

Quark stars and quantum-magnetically induced collapse

Quark matter is expected to exist in the interior of compact stellar objects as neutron stars or even the more exotic strange stars, based on the Bodmer-Witten conjecture. Bare strange quark stars and (normal) strange quark-matter stars, those possessing a baryon (electron-supported) crust, are hypothesized as good candidates to explain the properties of a set of peculiar stellar sources as the enigmatic X-ray source RX J1856.5-3754, some pulsars as PSR B1828-11 and PSR B1642-03, and the anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma-ray repeaters. In the MIT bag model, quarks are treated as a degenerate Fermi gas confined to a region of space having a vacuum energy density $B_{bag}$ (the Bag constant). In this note, we modif{}y the MIT Bag Model by including the electromagnetic interaction. We also show that this version of the MIT model implies the anisotropy of the Bag pressure due to the presence of the magnetic field. The equations of state of degenerate quarks gases are studied in the presence of ultra strong magnetic fields. The behavior of a system made-up of quarks having (or not) anomalous magnetic moment is reviewed. A structural instability is found, which is related to the anisotropic nature of the pressures in this highly magnetized matter. The conditions for the collapse of this system are obtained and compared to a previous model of neutron stars build-up on a neutron gas having anomalous magnetic moment.

Quantum instability of magnetized stellar objects

The equations of state for degenerate electron and neutron gases are studied in the presence of magnetic fields. After including quantum effects to study the structural properties of these systems, it is found that some hypermagnetized stars can be unstable based on the criterium of stability of pressures. Highly magnetized white dwarfs should collapse producing a supernova type Ia, whilst superstrongly magnetized neutron stars cannot stand their own magnetic field and must implode, too. A comparison of our results with a set of the available observational data of some compact stars is also presented, and the agreement between this theory and observations is verified.

Effect of a Magnetic Field on the Electroweak Symmetry

We discuss the effect of a strong magnetic field in the behavior of the symmetry of an electrically neutral electroweak plasma. We analyze the case of a strong field and low temperatures as compared with the W rest energy. If the magnetic field is large enough, it is self-consistently maintained. Charged vector bosons play the most important role, leading only to a decrease of the symmetry breaking parameter, the symmetry restoration not being possible.

Self-Magnetization of charged particles and Bose-Einstein Condensation

We discuss the Bose-Einstein condensation of relativistic vector charged particles in a strong external magnetic field in very dense matter, as may be paired spin-up electrons. We show that for electrons such systems may maintain self-consistently magnetic fields of order in between the interval $10^{10}-10^{13}$ Gauss. This could be the origin of large magnetic fields in some white dwarfs, but may also impose bounds due to the arising of strong anisotropy in the pressures, which may produce a transverse collapse of the star.

Magnetic collapse of a neutron gas: Can magnetars indeed be formed

A relativistic degenerate neutron gas in equilibrium with a background of electrons and protons in a magnetic field exerts its pressure anisotropically, having a smaller value perpendicular than along the magnetic field. For critical fields the magnetic pressure may produce the vanishing of the equatorial pressure of the neutron gas. Taking it as a model for neutron stars, the outcome could be a transverse collapse of the star. This fixes a limit to the fields to be observable in stable neutron star pulsars as a function of their density. The final structure left over after the implosion might be a mixed phase of nucleons and meson condensate, a strange star, or a highly distorted black hole or black "cigar", but no any magnetar, if viewed as a super strongly magnetized neutron star. However, we do not exclude the possibility of a supersotrong magnetic fields arising in supernova explosions which lead directly to strange stars. In other words, if any magnetars exist, they cannot be neutron stars.

Quantum Magnetic Collapse

We study the thermodynamics of degenerate electron and charged vector boson gases in very intense magnetic fields. In degenerate conditions of the electron gas, the pressure transverse to the magnetic field $B$ may vanish, leading to a transverse collapse. For W-bosons an instability arises because the magnetization diverges at the critical field B_c = M_W^2/e. If the magnetic field is self-consistently maintained, the maximum value it can take is of the order of $2B_c/3$, but in any case the system becomes unstable and collapses.

Effective Magnetic Moment of Neutrinos in Strong Magnetic Fields

We compute the effective magnetic moment of neutrino in the highly dense and strongly magnetized media. It is shown that this magnetic moment is generated due to the effective mass of neutrino and gives sufficiently high value of the magnetic moment in the core of neutron stars.

On the Collective Mode Spectrum in FQHE

We consider the Bethe Salpeter Equation (BSE) for a fractionally filled Landau level. A phenomenological discussion of the $1/3$ Laughlin's state is performed by assuming an ansatz for the one-particle propagator. The BSE is solved in this approach and it predicts an instability under the formation of charge density oscillations for a wide range of the one-particle gap parameter values in contrast with previous single mode approximation results. However, the conclusion is compatible with the one obtained within a composite fermion description done by us before and with the saturation of the zero momentum oscillator strength sum rule by the cyclotronic resonance. Further studies should be done in order to understand the discrepancy.
