Colloidal CuFeS2 Nanocrystals: Intermediate Fe d-Band Leads to High Photothermal Conversion Efficiency

We describe the colloidal hot-injection synthesis of phase-pure nanocrystals (NCs) of a highly abundant mineral, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). Absorption bands centered at around 480 and 950 nm, spanning almost the entire visible and near infrared regions, encompass their optical extinction characteristics. These peaks are ascribable to electronic transitions from the valence band (VB) to the empty intermediate band (IB), located in the fundamental gap and mainly composed of Fe 3d orbitals. Laser-irradiation (at 808 nm) of an aqueous suspension of CuFeS2 NCs exhibited significant heating, with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 49%. Such efficient heating is ascribable to the carrier relaxation within the broad IB band (owing to the indirect VB-IB gap), as corroborated by transient absorption measurements. The intense absorption and high photothermal transduction efficiency (PTE) of these NCs in the so-called biological window (650-900 nm) makes them suitable for photothermal therapy as demonstrated by tumor cell annihilation upon laser irradiation. The otherwise harmless nature of these NCs in dark conditions was confirmed by in vitro toxicity tests on two different cell lines. The presence of the deep Fe levels constituting the IB is the origin of such enhanced PTE, which can be used to design other high performing NC photothermal agents.

Report of the QCD Tools Working Group

We report on the activities of the ``QCD Tools for heavy flavors and new physics searches'' working group of the Run II Workshop on QCD and Weak Bosons. The contributions cover the topics of improved parton showering and comparisons of Monte Carlo programs and resummation calculations, recent developments in Pythia, the methodology of measuring backgrounds to new physics searches, variable flavor number schemes for heavy quark electro-production, the underlying event in hard scattering processes, and the Monte Carlo MCFM for NLO processes.

J/psi Production: Tevatron and Fixed-Target Collisions

In this talk I show the results of a fit of the NRQCD matrix elements to the CDF data for direct $J/ψ$ production, by including the radiative corrections to the colour-singlet channel and the effect of the $k_T$-smearing. Furthermore I perform the NLO NRQCD analysis of $J/ψ$ production in fixed-target proton-nucleon collisions and I fit the colour-octet matrix elements to the available experimental data. The results are compared to the Tevatron ones.

NLO Production and Decay of Quarkonium

We present a calculation of next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections to total hadronic production cross sections and to light-hadron-decay rates of heavy quarkonium states. Both colour-singlet and colour-octet contributions are included. We discuss in detail the use of covariant projectors in dimensional regularization, the structure of soft-gluon emission and the overall finiteness of radiative corrections. We compare our approach with the NLO version of the threshold-expansion technique recently introduced by Braaten and Chen. Most of the results presented here are new. Others represent the first independent reevaluation of calculations already known in the literature. In this case a comparison with previous findings is reported.

Quarkonium Photoproduction at Next-to-leading Order

We present the calculation of O(as^2 aem) corrections to heavy-quarkonium total photoproduction cross-sections. Results are given for the colour-octet component of S and P waves. The calculation is performed using covariant projectors in dimensional regularization. A phenomenological study of the results, including a discussion of the high-energy behaviour of the cross sections, is presented. For gamma-p energies up to few hundred GeV the NLO corrections significantly reduce the scale dependence of the production rates relative to the Born-level results. Large small-x corrections arise at higher energies, making the predictions strongly dependent on the shape of the gluon density and on the choice of factorization scale.

NLO Quarkonium Production in Hadronic Collisions

We present some preliminary results on the next-to-leading order calculation in QCD of quarkonium production cross sections in hadronic collisions. We will show that the NLO total cross sections for $P$-wave states produced at high energy are not reliable, due to the appearance of very large and negative contributions. We also discuss some issues related to the structure of final states in colour-octet production and to high-p_T fragmentation.

Charmonium Production at the Tevatron

We present in this work a study of large-\pt\ charmonium production in hadronic collisions. We work in the framework of the factorization model of Bodwin Braaten and Lepage, thereby including the color octet production mechanism, and extract the values of the necessary nonperturbative parameters from a comparison with the most recent data from the Fermilab 1.8 TeV $p\bar p$ hadron collider. We extend the calculation to 630 \gev, and compare the results with data published by the UA1 Collaboration. The global agreement is satisfactory, indicating that the largest components of the production mechanisms for charmonium production at high \pt\ have been isolated.

An update on $χ_c$ Decays: Perturbative QCD versus Data

We present a global fit of current available experimental results on $χ_c$ decays within next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD. The quality and reduced errors of recent data improve the agreement between theory and experiment.
