Integral identities for a semi-infinite interfacial crack in anisotropic elastic bimaterials

The focus of the article is on the analysis of a semi-infinite crack at the interface between two dissimilar anisotropic elastic materials, loaded by a general asymmetrical system of forces acting on the crack faces. Recently derived symmetric and skew-symmetric weight function matrices are introduced for both plane strain and antiplane shear cracks, and used together with the fundamental reciprocal identity (Betti formula) in order to formulate the elastic fracture problem in terms of singular integral equations relating the applied loading and the resulting crack opening. The proposed compact formulation can be used to solve many problems in linear elastic fracture mechanics (for example various classic crack problems in homogeneous and heterogeneous anisotropic media, as piezoceramics or composite materials). This formulation is also fundamental in many multifield theories, where the elastic problem is coupled with other concurrent physical phenomena.

Steady-state propagation of a Mode III crack in couple stress elastic materials

This paper is concerned with the problem of a semi-infinite crack steadily propagating in an elastic solid with microstructures subject to antiplane loading applied on the crack surfaces. The loading is moving with the same constant velocity as that of the crack tip. We assume subsonic regime, that is the crack velocity is smaller than the shear wave velocity. The material behaviour is described by the indeterminate theory of couple stress elasticity developed by Koiter. This constitutive model includes the characteristic lengths in bending and torsion and thus it is able to account for the underlying microstructure of the material as well as for the strong size effects arising at small scales and observed when the representative scale of the deformation field becomes comparable with the length scale of the microstructure, such as the grain size in a polycrystalline or granular aggregate. The present analysis confirms and extends earlier results on the static case by including the effects of crack velocity and rotational inertia. By adopting the criterion of maximum total shear stress, we discuss the effects of microstructural parameters on the stability of crack propagation.

Mode III crack propagation in a bimaterial plane driven by a channel of small line defects

We consider the quasi-static propagation of a Mode III crack along the interface in a bimaterial plane containing a finite array of small line defects (microcracks and rigid line inclusions). The microdefects are arranged to form a channel around the interface that can facilitate (or prevent) the crack propagation. The two dissimilar elastic materials are assumed to be weakly bonded, so that there is no kinking of the main crack from the straight path. On the basis of asymptotic formulae obtained by the authors, the propagation is analysed as a perturbation problem and the incremental crack advance is analytically derived at each position of the crack tip along the interface relative to the position of the defects. Numerical examples are provided showing potential applications of the proposed approach in the analysis of failure of composite materials. Extension to the case of infinite number of defects is discussed.

Perturbation of Mode III interfacial cracks

We consider the perturbation problem of a Mode III interfacial crack. The perturbation is of geometrical type and can be both perturbation of the crack faces and perturbation of the interface, which can deviate from the initial straight line configuration. Asymptotic formulae are derived for the first-order perturbation of the stress intensity factor. It is shown that, due to the unsymmetrical nature of the problem, the Mode III skew-symmetric weight function derived in Piccolroaz et al. (2009) is essential for the derivation of the correct asymptotic formulae. To illustrate the method, we present the numerical results for different geometrical perturbations of a half-plane interfacial crack in an infinite bimaterial structure. Discussion on the extension of the method to finite bodies is also presented.

Symmetric and skew-symmetric weight functions in perturbation models of 2D interfacial cracks

In this paper we address the vector problem of a 2D half-plane interfacial crack loaded by a general asymmetric distribution of forces acting on its faces. It is shown that the general integral formula for the evaluation of stress intensity factors, as well as high-order terms, requires both symmetric and skew-symmetric weight function matrices. The symmetric weight function matrix is obtained via the solution of a Wiener-Hopf functional equation, whereas the derivation of the skew-symmetric weight function matrix requires the construction of the corresponding full field singular solution. The weight function matrices are then used in the perturbation analysis of a crack advancing quasi-statically along the interface between two dissimilar media. A general and rigorous asymptotic procedure is developed to compute the perturbations of stress intensity factors as well as high-order terms.

Evaluation of the Lazarus-Leblond constants in the asymptotic model of the interfacial wavy crack

The paper addresses the problem of a a semi-infinite plane crack along the interface between two 3D isotropic half-spaces. Two methods of solution have been considered in the past: Lazarus and Leblond (1998) applied the "special" method by Bueckner (1987) and found the expression of the variation of the stress intensity factors for a wavy crack without solving the complete elasticity problem; their solution is expressed in terms of the physical variables, and it involves five constants whose analytical representation was unknown; on the other hand the "general" solution to the problem has been recently addressed by Bercial-Velez et al. (2005), using a Wiener-Hopf analysis and singular asymptotics near the crack front. The main goal of the present paper is to complete the solution to the problem by providing the connection between the two methods. This is done by constructing an integral representation for the Lazarus-Leblond's weight functions and by deriving the closed form representations of the Lazarus-Leblond's constants.
