Time-resolved Observation and Control of Superexchange Interactions with Ultracold Atoms in Optical Lattices

Quantum mechanical superexchange interactions form the basis of quantum magnetism in strongly correlated electronic media. We report on the direct measurement of superexchange interactions with ultracold atoms in optical lattices. After preparing a spin-mixture of ultracold atoms in an antiferromagnetically ordered state, we measure a coherent superexchange-mediated spin dynamics with coupling energies from 5 Hz up to 1 kHz. By dynamically modifying the potential bias between neighboring lattice sites, the magnitude and sign of the superexchange interaction can be controlled, thus allowing the system to be switched between antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic spin interactions. We compare our findings to predictions of a two-site Bose-Hubbard model and find very good agreement, but are also able to identify corrections which can be explained by the inclusion of direct nearest-neighbor interactions.

Phase-locking transition of coupled low-dimensional superfluids

We study the phase-locking transition of two coupled low-dimensional superfluids, either two-dimensional superfluids at finite temperature, or one-dimensional superfluids at zero temperature. We find that the superfluids have a strong tendency to phase-lock. The phase-locking is accompanied by a sizeable increase of the transition temperature $T_{c}$ (in 2D systems) of the resulting double-layer superfluid to thermal Bose gas transition, compared to the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature $T_{KT}$ of the uncoupled 2D systems, which suggests a plausible way of observing the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in two-dimensional cold atom systems by rapidly varying the tunneling rate between the superfluids. If there is also interaction between atoms in different layers present we find additional phases, while no sliding phase, characterized by order or quasi long range order (QLRO) either in the symmetric or the antisymmetric sector of the system.

Non-equilibrium coherence dynamics of a soft boson lattice

We study the non-equilibrium evolution of the phase coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one dimensional optical lattice, as the lattice is suddenly quenched from an insulating to a superfluid state. We observe slowly damped phase coherence oscillations in the regime of large filling factor (~100 bosons per site) at a frequency proportional to the generalized Josephson frequency. The truncated Wigner approximation (TWA) predicts the frequency of the observed oscillations.

Decay of a superfluid currents in a moving system of strongly interacting bosons

We analyze the stability and decay of supercurrents of strongly interacting bosons on optical lattices. At the mean field level, the system undergoes an irreversible dynamic phase transition, whereby the current decays beyond a critical phase gradient that depends on the interaction strength. At commensurate filling the transition line smoothly interpolates between the classical modulational instability of weakly interacting bosons and the equilibrium Mott transition at zero current. Below the mean field instability, the current can decay due to quantum and thermal phase slips. We derive asymptotic expressions of the decay rate near the critical current. In a three dimensional optical lattice this leads to very weak broadening of the transition. In one and two dimensions the broadening leads to significant current decay well below the mean field critical current. We show that the temperature scale below which quantum phase slips dominate the decay of supercurrents, is easily within experimental reach.

Decay of super-currents in condensates in optical lattices

In this paper we discuss decay of superfluid currents in boson lattice systems due to quantum tunneling and thermal activation mechanisms. We derive asymptotic expressions for the decay rate near the critical current in two regimes, deep in the superfluid phase and close to the superfluid-Mott insulator transition. The broadening of the transition at the critical current due to these decay mechanisms is more pronounced at lower dimensions. We also find that the crossover temperature below which quantum decay dominates is experimentally accessible in most cases. Finally, we discuss the dynamics of the current decay and point out the difference between low and high currents.

Superfluid-insulator transition in a moving system of interacting bosons

We analyze stability of superfluid currents in a system of strongly interacting ultra-cold atoms in an optical lattice. We show that such a system undergoes a dynamic, irreversible phase transition at a critical phase gradient that depends on the interaction strength between atoms. At commensurate filling, the phase boundary continuously interpolates between the classical modulation instability of a weakly interacting condensate and the equilibrium quantum phase transition into a Mott insulator state at which the critical current vanishes. We argue that quantum fluctuations smear the transition boundary in low dimensional systems. Finally we discuss the implications to realistic experiments.
