Correlations and the Cross Section of Exclusive ($e,e'p$) Reactions for $^{16}$O

The reduced cross section for exclusive ($e,e'p$) reactions has been studied in DWIA for the example of the nucleus $^{16}$O using a spectral function containing effects of correlations. The spectral function is evaluated directly for the finite nucleus starting from a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction within the framework of the Green's function approach. The emphasis is focused on the correlations induced by excitation modes at low energies described within a model-space of shell-model configurations including states up to the $sdg$ shell. Cross sections for the $p$-wave quasi-hole transitions at low missing energies are presented and compared with the most recent experimental data. In the case of the so-called perpendicular kinematics the reduced cross section derived in DWIA shows an enhancement at high missing momenta as compared to the PWIA result. Furthermore the cross sections for the $s$- and $d$-wave quasi-hole transitions are presented and compared to available data at low missing momenta. Also in these cases, which cannot be described in a model without correlations, a good agreement with the experiment is obtained.

On the Dirac Structure of the Nucleon Selfenergy in Nuclear Matter

The relativistic structure of the self-energy of a nucleon in nuclear matter is investigated including the imaginary and real components which arise from the terms of first and second order in the NN interaction. A parameterized form of Brueckner $G$ matrix is used for the NN interaction. The effects of the terms beyond the DBHF approximation on quasiparticle energies and the optical potential for nucleon-nucleus scattering are discussed.

High-momentum proton removal from 16O and the (e,e'p) cross section

The cross section for the removal of high-momentum protons from 16O is calculated for high missing energies. The admixture of high-momentum nucleons in the 16O ground state is obtained by calculating the single-hole spectral function directly in the finite nucleus with the inclusion of short-range and tensor correlations induced by a realistic meson-exchange interaction. The presence of high-momentum nucleons in the transition to final states in 15N at 60-100 MeV missing energy is converted to the coincidence cross section for the (e,e'p) reaction by including the coupling to the electromagnetic probe and the final state interactions of the outgoing proton in the same way as in the standard analysis of the experimental data. Detectable cross sections for the removal of a single proton at these high missing energies are obtained which are considerably larger at higher missing momentum than the corresponding cross sections for the p-wave quasihole transitions. Cross sections for these quasihole transitions are compared with the most recent experimental data available.

Long-Range Correlations and the Momentum Distribution in Nuclei

The influence of correlations on the momentum distribution of nucleons in nuclei is evaluated starting from a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. The calculations are performed directly for the finite nucleus $\,^{16}$O making use of the Green's function approach. The emphasis is focused on the correlations induced by the excitation modes at low energies described within a model-space of shell-model configurations including states up to the sdg shell. Our analysis demonstrates that these long-range correlations do not produce any significant enhancement of the momentum distribution at high missing momenta and low missing energies. This is in agreement with high resolution $(e,e'p)$ experiments for this nucleus. We also try to simulate the corresponding effects in large nuclei by quenching the energy-spacing between single-particle orbits. This yields a sizable enhancement of the spectral function at large momenta and small energy. Such behavior could explain the deviation of the momentum distribution from the mean field prediction, which has been observed in $(e,e'p)$ experiments on heavy nuclei like $^{208}$Pb.

A microscopic approach to the response of $^{\bf 3}$He -$^{\bf 4}$He mixtures

Correlated Basis Function perturbation theory is used to evaluate the zero temperature response $S(q,ω)$ of $^3$He-$^4$He mixtures for inelastic neutron scattering, at momentum transfers $q$ ranging from $1.1$ to $1.7 Å^{-1}$. We adopt a Jastrow correlated ground state and a basis of correlated particle-hole and phonon states. We insert correlated one particle-one hole and one-phonon states to compute the second order response. The decay of the one-phonon states into two-phonon states is accounted for in boson-boson approximation. The full response is splitted into three partial components $S_{αβ}(q,ω)$, each of them showing a particle-hole bump and a one phonon, delta shaped peak, which stays separated from the multiphonon background. The cross term $S_{34}(q,ω)$ results to be of comparable importance to $S_{33}(q,ω)$ in the particle-hole sector and to $S_{44}(q,ω)$ in the phonon one. Once the one-phonon peak has been convoluted with the experimental broadening, the computed scattering function is in semiquantitative agreement with recent experimental measurements.

Final state effects on superfluid $^{\bf 4}$He in the deep inelastic regime

A study of Final State Effects (FSE) on the dynamic structure function of superfluid $^4$He in the Gersch--Rodriguez formalism is presented. The main ingredients needed in the calculation are the momentum distribution and the semidiagonal two--body density matrix. The influence of these ground state quantities on the FSE is analyzed. A variational form of $ρ_2$ is used, even though simpler forms turn out to give accurate results if properly chosen. Comparison to the experimental response at high momentum transfer is performed. The predicted response is quite sensitive to slight variations on the value of the condensate fraction, the best agreement with experiment being obtained with $n_0=0.082$. Sum rules of the FSE broadening function are also derived and commented. Finally, it is shown that Gersch--Rodriguez theory produces results as accurate as those coming from other more recent FSE theories.

Comparison of the Effective Interaction to Various Orders in Different Mass Regions

The convergence of the perturbation expansion for the effective interaction to be used in shell-model calculations is investigated as function of the mass number $A$, from $A=4$ to $A=208$. As the mass number increases, there are more intermediate states to sum over in each higher-order diagram which contributes to the effective interaction. Together with the fact that the energy denominators in each diagram are smaller for larger mass numbers, these two effects could largely enhance higher-order contributions to the effective interaction, thereby deteriorating the order-by-order convergence of the effective interaction. This effect is counterbalanced by the short range of the nucleon-nucleon interaction, which implies that its matrix elements are weaker for valence single-particle states in ``large'' nuclei with large mass number as compared to those in light nuclei. These effects are examined by comparing various mean values of the matrix elements. It turns out that the contributions from higher-order terms remain fairly stable as the mass number increases from $A=4$ to $A=208$. The implications for nuclear structure calculations are discussed.

Momentum Distribution in Nuclear Matter and Finite Nuclei

A simple method is presented to evaluate the effects of short-range correlations on the momentum distribution of nucleons in nuclear matter within the framework of the Green's function approach. The method provides a very efficient representation of the single-particle Green's function for a correlated system. The reliability of this method is established by comparing its results to those obtained in more elaborate calculations. The sensitivity of the momentum distribution on the nucleon-nucleon interaction and the nuclear density is studied. The momentum distributions of nucleons in finite nuclei are derived from those in nuclear matter using a local-density approximation. These results are compared to those obtained directly for light nuclei like $^{16}O$.

Short-Range Correlations and the One-Body Density Matrix in Finite Nuclei

The effects of short-range correlations derived from a realistic meson-exchange potential on the single-particle density matrix in finite nuclei are investigated by analyzing the one-body density in terms of the natural orbits. Basic features of these natural orbits and their spectral distributions are discussed. For many observables it seems to be sufficient to approximate the one-body density matrix in terms of those natural orbits, which exhibit the largest occupation probabilities. For the investigation of the high-momentum components in the single-particle density, however, it is important to take into account natural orbits with small occupation probabilities, originating from the single-particle Green function at large negative energies.

Momentum and Energy Distributions of Nucleons in Finite Nuclei due to Short-Range Correlations

The influence of short-range correlations on the momentum and energy distribution of nucleons in nuclei is evaluated assuming a realistic meson-exchange potential for the nucleon-nucleon interaction. Using the Green-function approach the calculations are performed directly for the finite nucleus $^{16}$O avoiding the local density approximation and its reference to studies of infinite nuclear matter. The nucleon-nucleon correlations induced by the short-range and tensor components of the interaction yield an enhancement of the momentum distribution at high momenta as compared to the Hartree-Fock description. These high-momentum components should be observed mainly in nucleon knockout reactions like $(e,e'p)$ leaving the final nucleus in a state of high excitation energy. Our analysis also demonstrates that non-negligible contributions to the momentum distribution should be found in partial waves which are unoccupied in the simple shell-model. The treatment of correlations beyond the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation also yields an improvement for the calculated ground-state properties.

Effective Mass of One 4he Atom in Liquid 3he

A microscopic calculation of the effective mass of one $^4$He impurity in homogeneous liquid $^3$He at zero temperature is performed for an extended Jastrow--Slater wave function, including two-- and three--body dynamical correlations and also backflow correlations between the $^4$He atom and the particles in the medium. The effective mass at saturation density, $m_4^*/m_4=1.21$, is in very good agreement with the recent experimental determination by Edwards {\it et al}. The three-- particle correlations appear to give a small contribution to the effective mass and different approximations for the three--particle distribution function give almost identical results for $m_4^*/m_4$.

Width of the $Δ$ resonance in nuclei

In this work we evaluate the imaginary part of the isobar $Δ$ self-energy $Σ_Δ$ from the two-body absorption process $Δ+N\rightarrow 2N$. This contribution is calculated using a recently developed non-relativistic scheme, which allows for an evaluation of the self-energy with a basis of single-particle states appropriate for both bound hole states and for particle states in the continuum. In order to test the medium dependence of the self-energy, we calculate the two-body absorption term $Σ_Δ^{A2}$ for several finite nuclei with $N=Z$, i.e.\ $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca and $^{100}$Sn. The resulting self-energy, which is energy dependent and non-local, is compared with a simple parameterization derived from nuclear matter.

Dynamic Structure Function in 3he-4he Mixtures

Relevant features of the dynamic structure function $S(q,ω)$ in $^3$He-$^4$He mixtures at zero temperature are investigated starting from known properties of the ground state. Sum rules are used to fix rigorous constraints to the different contributions to $S(q,ω)$, coming from $^3$He and $^4$He elementary excitations, as well as to explore the role of the cross term $S^{(3,4)}(q,ω)$. Both the low-$q$ (phonon-roton $^4$He excitations and 1p-1h $^3$He excitations) and high-$q$ (deep inelastic scattering) ranges are discussed.
