Topological charge and spin Hall effects due to skyrmions in canted antiferromagnets

The topological charge-Hall effect (TCHE) and the topological spin-Hall effect (TSHE), arising from ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmions, respectively; can be elucidated through the emergence of spin-dependent Berry gauge fields that affect the adiabatic flow of electrons within the skyrmion texture. TCHE is absent in systems with parity-time (PT) symmetry, such as collinear AFM systems. In this paper, we theoretically study TCHE and TSHE in a canted antiferromagnetic within the diffusive transport regime. Spin canting or weak ferromagnetism in canted AFMs, which break the PT symmetry, may arise, e.g., from strong homogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Using a semiclassical Boltzmann approach, we obtain diffusion equations for the spin and charge accumulations in the presence of finite spin-flip and spin-dependent momentum relaxation times. We show that the weak ferromagnetic moment stemming from spin canting and the subsequent breaking of parity-time symmetry results in the emergence of both finite TCHE and TSHE in AFM systems.

Bilinear planar Hall effect in topological insulators due to spin-momentum locking inhomogeneity

We study the effect of spin-momentum locking inhomogeneity on the planar Hall effect in topological insulators (TIs). Using the minimal model describing surface states of 3D TIs and semiclassical Boltzmann formalism, we have derived the planar Hall conductivity within the generalized relaxation time approximation. We have found that the total planar Hall conductivity is a sum of linear and nonlinear to the external electric field components. The linear term is a conventional planar Hall conductivity which scales quadratically with an external magnetic field, whereas the nonlinear term reveals bilinear behaviour, i.e., changes its sign when either charge current density or in-plane magnetic field orientation is reversed. We have shown that the emergent nonlinear planar Hall effect is a consequence of spin-momentum locking inhomogeneity in the TIs with isotropic energy dispersion and dominates under the conventional planar Hall effect.

Current-Driven Dynamics of Magnetic Hopfions

Topological magnetic textures have attracted considerable interest since they exhibit new properties and might be useful in information technology. Magnetic hopfions are three-dimensional (3D) spatial variations in the magnetization with a non-trivial Hopf index. We find that in ferromagnetic materials, two types of hopfions, Bloch-type and Néel-type hopfions, can be excited as metastable states in the presence of bulk and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, respectively. We further investigate how hopfions can be driven by currents via spin-transfer torques (STTs) and spin-Hall torques (SHTs). Distinct from 2D ferromagnetic skyrmions, hopfions have a vanishing gyrovector. Consequently, there are no undesirable Hall effects. Néel-type hopfions move along the current direction via both STT and SHT, while Bloch-type hopfions can be moved either transverse to the current direction by SHT or parallel to the current direction by STT. Our findings open the door to utilizing hopfions as information carriers.

Chiral ferromagnetism beyond Lifshitz invariants

We consider a contribution $w_{\text{ch}}$ to the micromagnetic energy density that is linear with respect to the first spatial derivatives of the local magnetization direction. For a generalized 2D Rashba ferromagnet, we present a microscopic analysis of this contribution and, in particular, demonstrate that it cannot be expressed through Lifshitz invariants beyond the linear order in the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength. Terms in $w_{\text{ch}}$ beyond Lifshitz invariants emerge as a result of spin rotation symmetry breaking caused by SOC. Effects of these terms on the phase diagram of magnetic states and spin-wave dispersion are discussed. Finally, we present a classification of terms in $w_{\text{ch}}$, allowed by symmetry, for each crystallographic point group.

Asymmetric and symmetric exchange in a generalized 2D Rashba ferromagnet

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is investigated in a 2D ferromagnet (FM) with spin-orbit interaction of Rashba type at finite temperatures. The FM is described in the continuum limit by an effective $s$-$d$ model with arbitrary dependence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and kinetic energy of itinerant electrons on the absolute value of momentum. In the limit of weak SOC, we derive a general expression for the DMI constant $D$ from a microscopic analysis of the electronic grand potential. We compare $D$ with the exchange stiffness $A$ and show that, to the leading order in small SOC strength $α_{\text{R}}$, the conventional relation $D=(4 mα_{\text{R}}/\hbar)A$, in general, does not hold beyond the Bychkov-Rashba model. Moreover, in this model, both $A$ and $D$ vanish at zero temperature in the metal regime (i.e., when two spin sub-bands are partly occupied). For nonparabolic bands or nonlinear Rashba coupling, these coefficients are finite and acquire a nontrivial dependence on the chemical potential that demonstrates the possibility to control the size and chirality of magnetic textures by adjusting a gate voltage.

Electrically controlled long-distance spin transport through an antiferromagnetic insulator

Spintronics uses spins, the intrinsic angular momentum of electrons, as an alternative for the electron charge. Its long-term goal is in the development of beyond-Moore low dissipation technology devices. Recent progress demonstrated the long-distance transport of spin signals across ferromagnetic insulators. Antiferromagnetically ordered materials are however the most common class of magnetic materials with several crucial advantages over ferromagnetic systems. In contrast to the latter, antiferromagnets exhibit no net magnetic moment, which renders them stable and impervious to external fields. In addition, they can be operated at THz frequencies. While fundamentally their properties bode well for spin transport, previous indirect observations indicate that spin transmission through antiferromagnets is limited to short distances of a few nanometers. Here we demonstrate the long-distance, over tens of micrometers, propagation of spin currents through hematite (α-Fe2O3), the most common antiferromagnetic iron oxide, exploiting the spin Hall effect for spin injection. We control the spin current flow by the interfacial spin-bias and by tuning the antiferromagnetic resonance frequency with an external magnetic field. This simple antiferromagnetic insulator is shown to convey spin information parallel to the compensated moment (Néel order) over distances exceeding tens of micrometers. This newly-discovered mechanism transports spin as efficiently as the net magnetic moments in the best-suited complex ferromagnets. Our results pave the way to ultra-fast, low-power antiferromagnet-insulator-based spin-logic devices that operate at room temperature and in the absence of magnetic fields.

Spin-Orbit Torques in Two-Dimensional Rashba Ferromagnets

Magnetization dynamics in single-domain ferromagnets can be triggered by charge current if spin-orbit coupling is sufficiently strong. We apply functional Keldysh theory to investigate Rashba spin-orbit torques in metallic two-dimensional ferromagnets. A reactive, anti-damping-like spin-orbit torque as well as a dissipative, field-like torque are calculated microscopically, to the leading order in the spin-orbit interaction strength. By calculating the first vertex correction we show that the intrinsic anti-damping-like torque vanishes unless the scattering rates are spin-dependent.

Conductance of bilayer graphene in the presence of a magnetic field: Effects of disorder

We investigate the electronic transport properties of unbiased and biased bilayer graphene nanoribbon in n-p and n-n junctions subject to a perpendicular magnetic field. Using the non-equilibrium Green's function method and the Landauer-Büttiker formalism, the conductance is studied for the cases of clean, on-site, and edge disordered bilayer graphene. We show that the lowest Hall plateau remains unchanged in the presence of disorder, whereas asymmetry destroys both the plateaus and conductance quantization. In addition, we show that disorder induces an enhancement of the conductance in the n-p region in the presence of magnetic fields. Finally, we show that the equilibration of quantum Hall edge states between distinctively doped regions causes Hall plateaus to appear in the regime of complete mode mixing.

Stoner ferromagnetic phase of a graphene in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field

We study the effects of an in-plane magnetic field on the ground state properties of both gapless and gapped graphene sheets within Random Phase Approximation. The critical magnetic field which leads to a fully spin polarized phase increases by decreasing the carrier density at zero gap indicating that no spontaneous magnetic phase transition occurs. However, at large energy gap values it decreases by decreasing the density. We find a continuous quantum magnetic phase transition (Stoner phase) for Dirac fermions in a doped graphene sheet. Novel in-plane magnetic field dependence of the charge and spin susceptibilities are uncovered.

Dynamical properties of quasiparticles in a gapped graphene sheet

We present numerical calculations of the impact of charge carriers-carriers interactions on the dynamical properties of quasiparticles such as renormalized velocity and quasiparticle inelastic scattering lifetime in a gapped graphene sheet. Our formalism is based on the many-body $G_0W$-approximation for the self-energy. We present results for the many-body renormalized velocity suppression and the renormalization constant over a broad range of energy gap values. We find that the renormalized velocity is almost independence of the carrier densities at large density regime. We also show that the quasiparticle inelastic scattering lifetime decreases by increasing the gap value. Finally, we present results for the mean free path of charge carriers suppression over the energy gap values.

Quasiparticle properties of graphene in the presence of disorder

We calculate the quasiparticle properties of chiral two-dimensional Dirac electrons in graphene within the Landau Fermi Liquid scheme based on $GW$ approximation in the presence of disorder. Disorder effects due to charged impurity scattering plays a crucial role in density dependence of quasiparticle quantities. Mode-coupling approach to scattering rate and self-energy in $GW$ approximation for quasiparticle renormalized Fermi velocity and spin-antisymmetric Landau Fermi parameter incorporating the many-body interactions and the disorder effects show reduction of these quantities by 5-15 percent at available experimental charge carrier density region.
