Renormalizable Extension of the Abelian Higgs-Kibble Model with a dimension 6 operator

A deformation of the Abelian Higgs Kibble model induced by a dimension 6 derivative operator is studied. A novel differential equation is established fixing the dependence of the vertex functional on the coupling $z$ of the dim.6 operator in terms of amplitudes at $z = 0$ (those of the power-counting renormalizable Higgs-Kibble model). The latter equation holds in a formalism where the physical mode is described by a gauge-invariant field. The functional identities of the theory in this formalism are studied. In particular we show that the Slavnov-Taylor identities separately hold true at each order in the number of internal propagators of the gauge-invariant scalar. Despite being non-power-counting renormalizable, the model at $z \neq 0$ depends on a finite number of physical parameters.

Off-shell renormalization in the presence of dimension 6 derivative operators. III. Operator mixing and $β$ functions

We evaluate the one-loop $β$ functions of all dimension 6 parity-preserving operators in the Abelian Higgs-Kibble model. No on-shell restrictions are imposed; and the (generalized) non-polynomial field redefinitions arising at one-loop order are fully taken into account. The operator mixing matrix is also computed, and its cancellation patterns explained as a consequence of the functional identities of the theory and power-counting conditions.

A Magnetic Field Cloak For Charged Particle Beams

Shielding charged particle beams from transverse magnetic fields is a common challenge for particle accelerators and experiments. We demonstrate that a magnetic field cloak is a viable solution. It allows for the use of dipole magnets in the forward regions of experiments at an Electron Ion Collider (EIC) and other facilities without interfering with the incoming beams. The dipoles can improve the momentum measurements of charged final state particles at angles close to the beam line and therefore increase the physics reach of these experiments. In contrast to other magnetic shielding options (such as active coils), a cloak requires no external powering. We discuss the design parameters, fabrication, and limitations of a magnetic field cloak and demonstrate that cylinders made from 45 layers of YBCO high-temperature superconductor, combined with a ferromagnetic shell made from epoxy and stainless steel powder, shield more than 99% of a transverse magnetic field of up to 0.45 T (95 % shielding at 0.5 T) at liquid nitrogen temperature. The ferromagnetic shell reduces field distortions caused by the superconductor alone by 90% at 0.45 T.

Higgs Potential from Derivative Interactions

A formulation of the linear $σ$ model with derivative interactions is studied. The classical theory is on-shell equivalent to the $σ$ model with the standard quartic Higgs potential. The mass of the scalar mode only appears in the quadratic part and not in the interaction vertices, unlike in the ordinary formulation of the theory. Renormalization of the model is discussed. A non power-counting renormalizable extension, obeying the defining functional identities of the theory, is presented. This extension is physically equivalent to the tree-level inclusion of a dimension six effective operator $\partial_μ(Φ^\dagger Φ) \partial^μ(Φ^\dagger Φ)$. The resulting UV divergences are arranged in a perturbation series around the power-counting renormalizable theory. The application of the formalism to the Standard Model in the presence of the dimension-six operator $\partial_μ(Φ^\dagger Φ) \partial^μ(Φ^\dagger Φ)$ is discussed.

The Cosmological Slavnov-Taylor Identity from BRST Symmetry in Single-Field Inflation

The cosmological Slavnov-Taylor (ST) identity of the Einstein-Hilbert action coupled to a single inflaton field is obtained from the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry associated with diffeomorphism invariance in the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. The consistency conditions between the correlators of the scalar and tensor modes in the squeezed limit are then derived from the ST identity, together with the softly broken conformal symmetry. Maldacena's original relations connecting the 2- and 3-point correlators at horizon crossing are recovered, as well as the next-to-leading corrections, controlled by the special conformal transformations.

The nature of the late achromatic bump in GRB 120326A

The long ${\it Swift}$ gamma-ray burst GRB 120326A at redshift $z=1.798$ exhibited a multi-band light curve with a striking feature: a late-time, long-lasting achromatic rebrightening, rarely seen in such events. Peaking in optical and X-ray bands $\sim 35$ ks ($\sim 12.5$ ks in the GRB rest frame) after the 70-s GRB prompt burst, the feature brightens nearly two orders of magnitude above the underlying optical power-law decay. Modelling the multiwavelength light curves, we investigate possible causes of the rebrightening in the context of the standard fireball model. We exclude a range of scenarios for the origin of this feature: reverse-shock flash, late-time forward shock peak due to the passage of the maximal synchrotron frequency through the optical band, late central engine optical/X-ray flares, interaction between the expanding blast wave and a density enhancement in the circumburst medium and gravitational microlensing. Instead we conclude that the achromatic rebrightening may be caused by a refreshed forward shock or a geometrical effect. In addition, we identify an additional component after the end of the prompt emission, that shapes the observed X-ray and optical light curves differently, ruling out a single overall emission component to explain the observed early time emission.

Renormalization Group Equation for Weakly Power Counting Renormalizable Theories

We study the renormalization group flow in weak power counting (WPC) renormalizable theories. The latter are theories which, after being formulated in terms of certain variables, display only a finite number of independent divergent amplitudes order by order in the loop expansion. Using as a toolbox the well-known SU(2) non linear sigma model, we prove that for such theories a renormalization group equation holds that does not violate the WPC condition: that is, the sliding of the scale $μ$ for physical amplitudes can be reabsorbed by a suitable set of finite counterterms arising at the loop order prescribed by the WPC itself. We explore in some detail the consequences of this result; in particular, we prove that it holds in the framework of a recently introduced beyond the Standard Model scenario in which one considers non-linear Stückelberg-like symmetry breaking contributions to the fermion and gauge boson mass generation mechanism.

Slavnov-Taylor Identity for the Effective Field Theory of the Color Glass Condensate

We show that a powerful Slavnov-Taylor (ST) identity exists for the Effective Field Theory (EFT) of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC), allowing to control by purely algebraic means the full dependence on the background fields of the fast gluon modes, as well as the correlators of the quantum fluctuations of the classical gluon source. We use this formalism to study the change of the background fast modes (in the Coulomb gauge), induced by the quantum corrections of the semi-fast gluons. We establish the evolution equation for the EFT of the CGC, which points towards an algebraic derivation of the JIMWLK equation. Being based on symmetry-arguments only, the approach can be used to extend the analysis to arbitrary gauges and to higher orders in the perturbation expansion of the EFT.

High-energy QCD evolution from Slavnov-Taylor identity

We clarify the derivation of high-energy QCD evolution equations from the fundamental gauge symmetry of QCD. The gauge-fixed classical action of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) is shown to be invariant under a suitable BRST symmetry, that holds after the separation of the gluon modes into their fast classical (background) part, the soft component and the semifast one, over which the one-step quantum evolution is carried out. The resulting Slavnov-Taylor (ST) identity holds to all orders in perturbation theory and strongly constrains the CGC effective field theory (EFT) arising from the integration of the soft modes. We show that the ST identity guarantees gauge-invariance of the EFT. It also allows to control the dependence on the gauge-fixing choice for the semifast modes (usually the lightcone gauge in explicit computations). The formal properties of the evolution equations valid in different regimes (BKFL, JIMWLK, ...) can be all derived in a unified setting within this algebraic approach.

High-energy QCD evolution from BRST symmetry

We show that the (gauge fixed) classical action of the Color Glass Condensate is invariant under a suitable Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin symmetry, that holds after the gluon modes are split into their fast, semi-fast and soft components, according to the longitudinal momenta they carry. This entails the existence of a corresponding Slavnov-Taylor identity which in turn strongly constrains the effective field theory arising when integrating out the semi-fast modes. Specifically, we prove that this identity guarantees the gauge invariance of the resulting effective theory. In addition, we use it to demonstrate that the integration over the semi-fast modes does not deform the classical Yang-Mills equations of motion, thus validating a key assumption in the usual procedure adopted when deriving the renormalization group equation governing the evolution with energy of the effective theory. As far as the latter are concerned, we finally prove that its functional form is common, and it is determined by symmetries arguments alone. The formal properties of these equations valid in different regimes and/or approximations (e.g., the JIMWLK equation and its BFKL limit) can be therefore derived in a unified setting within this algebraic approach.

Nonlinearly Realized Gauge Theories for LHC Physics

We consider a minimal nonlinearly realized electroweak theory where mass generation happens à la Stueckelberg. Deformation of the nonlinearly realized gauge symmetry is controlled by functional methods. The Weak Power Counting allows to select uniquely the Hopf algebra of the theory and gives definite predictions on the Beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) sector of the theory: the latter includes one CP-odd and two charged physical scalars (in addition to the Higgs-like CP-even resonance). The model interpolates between a purely Stueckelberg and a Higgs scenario. It can be used in order to check whether the presence of a Stueckelberg mass component can already be excluded on the basis of the existing LHC7-8 data.

AntiBRST symmetry and Background Field Method

We show that the requirement that a SU(N) Yang-Mills action (gauge fixed in a linear covariant gauge) is invariant under both the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry as well as the corresponding antiBRST symmetry, automatically implies that the theory is quantized in the (linear covariant) background field method (BFM) gauge. Thus, the BFM and its associated background Ward identity naturally emerge from antiBRST invariance of the theory and need not be introduced as an ad hoc gauge fixing procedure. Treating ghosts and antighosts on an equal footing, as required by a BRST-antiBRST invariant formulation of the theory, gives also rise to a local antighost equation that together with the local ghost equation completely resolve the algebraic structure of the ghost sector for any value of the gauge fixing parameter. We finally prove that the background fields are stationary points of the background effective action obtained when the quantum fields are integrated out.

The Stueckelberg Mechanism in the presence of Physical Scalar Resonances

We show that it is possible to accommodate physical scalar resonances within a minimal nonlinearly realized electroweak theory in a way compatible with a natural Hopf algebra selection criterion (Weak Power Counting) and the relevant functional identities of the model (Local Functional Equation, Slavnov-Taylor identity, ghost equations, b-equations). The Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) sector of the theory is studied by BRST techniques. The presence of a mass generation mechanism à la Stückelberg allows for two mass invariants in the gauge boson sector. The corresponding 't Hooft gauge-fixing is constructed by respecting all the symmetries of the theory. The model interpolates between the Higgs and a purely Stückelberg scenario. Despite the presence of physical scalar resonances, we show that tree-level violation of unitarity in the scattering of longitudinally polarized charged gauge bosons occurs at sufficiently high energies, if a fraction of the mass is generated by the Stückelberg mechanism. The formal properties of the physically favoured limit after LHC7-8 data, where BSM effects are small and custodial symmetry in the gauge boson sector is respected, are studied.

Scalar Resonances in the Non-linearly Realized Electroweak Theory

We introduce a physical scalar sector in a SU(2)xU(1) electroweak theory in which the gauge group is realized non linearly. By invoking theoretical as well as experimental constraints, we build a phenomenologically viable model in which a minimum of four scalar resonances appear, and the mass of the CP even scalar is controlled by a vacuum expectation value; however, the masses of all other particles (both matter as well as vector boson fields) are unrelated to spontaneous symmetry breaking and generated by the Stückelberg mechanism. We evaluate in this model the CP-even scalar decay rate to two photons and use this amplitude to perform a preliminary comparison with the recent LHC measurements. As a result, we find that the model exhibits a preference for a negative Yukawa coupling between the top quark and the CP-even resonance.

Canonical Transformations and Renormalization Group Invariance in the presence of Non-trivial Backgrounds

We show that for a SU(N) Yang-Mills theory the classical background-quantum splitting is non-trivially deformed at the quantum level by a canonical transformation with respect to the Batalin-Vilkovisky bracket associated with the Slavnov-Taylor identity of the theory. This canonical transformation acts on all the fields (including the ghosts) and antifields; it uniquely fixes the dependence on the background field of all the one-particle irreducible Green's functions of the theory at hand. The approach is valid both at the perturbative and non-perturbative level, being based solely on symmetry requirements. As a practical application, we derive the renormalization group equation in the presence of a generic background and apply it in the case of a SU(2) instanton. Finally, we explicitly calculate the one-loop deformation of the background-quantum splitting in lowest order in the instanton background.

Of Higgs, Unitarity and other Questions

On the verge of conclusive checks on the Standard Model by the LHC, we discuss some of the basic assumptions. The reason for this analysis stems from a recent proposal of an Electroweak Model based on a nonlinearly realized gauge group SU(2) X U(1), where, in the perturbative approximation, there is no Higgs boson. The model enjoys the Slavnov-Taylor identities and therefore the perturbative unitarity. On the other hand, it is commonly believed that the existence of the Higgs boson is entangled with the property of unitarity, when high energy processes are considered. The argument is based mostly on the Froissart bound and on the Equivalence Theorem. In this talk we briefly review some of our objections on the validity of such arguments. Some open questions are pointed out, in particular on the limit of zero mass for the vector mesons and on the fate of the longitudinal polarizations.

Renormalization of the Yang-Mills theory in the ambiguity-free gauge

The renormalization procedure for the Yang-Mills theory in the gauge free of the Gribov ambiguity is constructed. It is shown that all the ultraviolet infinities may be removed by renormalization of the parameters entering the classical Lagrangian and the local redefinition of the fields.
