Autonomous Diffractometry Enabled by Visual Reinforcement Learning

Automation underpins progress across scientific and industrial disciplines. Yet, automating tasks requiring interpretation of abstract visual information remain challenging. For example, crystal alignment strongly relies on humans with the ability to comprehend diffraction patterns. Here we introduce an autonomous system that aligns single crystals without access to crystallography and diffraction theory. Using a model-free reinforcement learning framework, an agent learns to identify and navigate towards high-symmetry orientations directly from Laue diffraction patterns. Despite the absence of human supervision, the agent develops human-like strategies to achieve time-efficient alignment across different crystal symmetry classes. With this, we provide a computational framework for intelligent diffractometers. As such, our approach advances the development of automated experimental workflows in materials science.

Z_2-slave-spin theory for strongly correlated fermions

We review a representation of Hubbard-like models that is based on auxiliary pseudospin variables. These pseudospins refer to the local charge modulo two in the original model and display a local Z_2 gauge freedom. We discuss the associated mean-field theory in a variety of different contexts which are related to the problem of the interaction-driven metal-insulator transition at half-filling including Fermi surface deformation and spectral features beyond the local approximation. Notably, on the mean-field level, the Hubbard bands are derived from the excitations of an Ising model in a transverse field and the quantum critical point of this model is identified with the Brinkman-Rice criticality of the almost localized Fermi liquid state. Non-local correlations are included using a cluster mean-field approximation and the Schwinger boson theory for the auxiliary quantum Ising model.

Dynamically Generated Double Occupancy as a Probe of Cold Atom Systems

The experimental investigation of quantum phases in optical lattice systems provides major challenges. Recently, dynamical generation of double occupancy via modulation of the hopping amplitude t has been used to characterize the strongly correlated phase of fermionic atoms. Here, we want to validate this experimental technique with a theoretical study of the driven Hubbard model using analytic methods. We find that conclusive evidence for a Mott phase can be inferred from such a measurement, provided that sufficiently low temperatures kT<<t can be reached.

Slave-boson theory of the Mott transition in the two-band Hubbard model

We apply the slave-boson approach of Kotliar and Ruckenstein to the two-band Hubbard model with an Ising like Hund's rule coupling and bands of different widths. On the mean-field level of this approach we investigate the Mott transition and observe both separate and joint transitions of the two bands depending on the choice of the inter- and intraorbital Coulomb interaction parameters. The mean-field calculations allow for a simple physical interpretation and can confirm several aspects of previous work. Beside the case of two individually half-filled bands we also examine what happens if the original metallic bands possess fractional filling either due to finite doping or due to a crystal field which relatively shifts the atomic energy levels of the two orbitals. For appropriate values of the interaction and of the crystal field we can observe a a band insulating state and a ferromagnetic metal.
