Localization of nonlinear excitations in curved waveguides

Motivated by the example of a curved waveguide embedded in a photonic crystal, we examine the effects of geometry in a ``quantum channel'' of parabolic form. We study the linear case and derive exact as well as approximate expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linear problem. We then proceed to the nonlinear setting and its stationary states in a number of limiting cases that allow for analytical treatment. The results of our analysis are used as initial conditions in direct numerical simulations of the nonlinear problem and localized excitations are found to persist, as well as to have interesting relaxational dynamics. Analogies of the present problem in contexts related to atomic physics and particularly to Bose-Einstein condensation are discussed.

Z_2 Gauge Theory of Electron Fractionalization in the t,t'-J Model

We consider a strongly correlated "t,t'-J" spin model with a positive uniaxial anisotropy. We show that in 2+1 dimensions, this model is equivalent to spin-charge excitations coupled to Z_2 Ising gauge fields and not to a U(1) gauge fields (as in the "t-J" model). As a result a phase of frozen Z_2 gauge fluctuations is possible, giving rise to a spin-charge-separated liquid.

On adaptability and "intermediate phase" in randomly connected networks

We present a simple model that enables us to analytically characterize a floppy to rigid transition and an associated self-adaptive intermediate phase in a random bond network. In this intermediate phase, the network adapts itself to lower the stress due to constraints. Our simulations verify this picture. We use these insights to identify applications of these ideas in computational problems such as vertex cover and K-SAT.

Quantum logic operations and creation of entanglement in a scalable superconducting quantum computer with long-range constant interaction between qubits

We consider a one-dimensional chain of many superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), serving as charge qubits. Each SQUID is coupled to its nearest neighbors through constant capacitances. We study the quantum logic operations and implementation of entanglement in this system. Arrays with two and three qubits are considered in detail. We show that the creation of entanglement with an arbitrary number of qubits can be implemented, without systematic errors, even when the coupling between qubits is not small. A relatively large coupling constant allows one to increase the clock speed of the quantum computer. We analytically and numerically demonstrate the creation of the entanglement for this case, which can be a good test for the experimental implementation of a relatively simple quantum protocol with many qubits. We discuss a possible application of our approach for implementing universal quantum logic for more complex algorithms by decreasing the coupling constant and, correspondingly, decreasing the clock speed. The errors introduced by the long-range interaction for the universal logic gates are estimated analytically and calculated numerically. Our results can be useful for experimental implementation of quantum algorithms using controlled magnetic fluxes and gate voltages applied to the SQUIDs. The algorithms discussed in this paper can be implemented using already existing technologies in superconducting systems with constant inter-qubit coupling.

Detecting Breather Excitations with Inelastic Tunneling Spectroscopy

We propose inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy scanning tunneling microscopy (IETS-STM) as a means of exciting and observing intrinsic localized modes (breathers) in a macromolecule. As a demonstration, inelastic tunneling features of the density of states are calculated for a simple nonlinear elastic Morse chain. The general formalism we have developed for the IETS is applicable to other nonlinear extended objects, such as DNA on a substrate.

Domain Walls of Single-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates in External Potentials

We demonstrate the possibility of creating domain walls described by a single component Gross-Pitaevskii equation with attractive interaction, in the presence of an optical-lattice potential. While it is found that the extended domain wall is unstable, we show that the external magnetic trap can stabilize it. Stable solutions include twisted domain walls, as well as asymmetric solitons. The results also apply to spatial solitons in planar waveguides with transverse modulation of the refractive index.

Luttinger liquid versus charge density wave behaviour in the one-dimensional spinless fermion Holstein model

We discuss the nature of the different ground states of the half-filled Holstein model of spinless fermions in 1D. In the metallic regime we determine the renormalised effective coupling constant and the velocity of the charge excitations by a density-matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) finite-size scaling approach. At low (high) phonon frequencies the Luttinger liquid is characterised by an attractive (repulsive) effective interaction. In the charge-density wave Peierls-distorted state the charge structure factor scales to a finite value indicating long-range order.

Persistent spin currents induced by a spatially-dependent magnetic field in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ring

We show that a spatially-dependent magnetic field can induce a persistent spin current in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ring, proportional to the solid angle subtended by the magnetic field on a unit sphere. The result is a direct consequence of Berry "parallel transport" in space. The magnitude of the spin current is determined by the ratio of longitudinal and transverse exchange interactions $J_\parallel/J_\perp$ and by the magnetic field. For large magnetic fields the Zeeman energy strongly renormalizes the Ising term giving rise to a maximum spin current. In the limit of $J_\parallel/J_\perp\ll1$ the amplitude of the current behaves like $1-(J_\parallel/J_\perp)^2$. In the opposite limit $πJ_\perp> J_\parallel>J_\perp$ the amplitude scales as $\sqrt{J_\parallel/ J_\perp}\exp{(-\sqrt{J_\parallel/J_\perp})}$.

Modulational and Parametric Instabilities of the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We examine the modulational and parametric instabilities arising in a non-autonomous, discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation setting. The principal motivation for our study stems from the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a deep optical lattice. We find that under periodic variations of the heights of the interwell barriers (or equivalently of the scattering length), additionally to the modulational instability, a window of parametric instability becomes available to the system. We explore this instability through multiple-scale analysis and identify it numerically. Its principal dynamical characteristic is that, typically, it develops over much larger times than the modulational instability, a feature that is qualitatively justified by comparison of the corresponding instability growth rates.

Variational Approach to the Modulational Instability

We study the modulational stability of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) using a time-dependent variational approach. Within this framework, we derive ordinary differential equations (ODEs) for the time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulational perturbations. Analyzing the ensuing ODEs, we re-derive the classical modulational instability criterion. The case (relevant to applications in optics and Bose-Einstein condensation) where the coefficients of the equation are time-dependent, is also examined.

Double-Slit Interferometry with a Bose-Einstein Condensate

A Bose-Einstein "double-slit" interferometer has been recently realized experimentally by (Y. Shin et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 50405 (2004)). We analyze the interferometric steps by solving numerically the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevski equation in three-dimensional space. We focus on the adiabaticity time scales of the problem and on the creation of spurious collective excitations as a possible source of the strong dephasing observed experimentally. The role of quantum fluctuations is discussed.

Quantum lattice dynamical effects on the single-particle excitations in 1D Mott and Peierls insulators

As a generic model describing quasi-one-dimensional Mott and Peierls insulators, we investigate the Holstein-Hubbard model for half-filled bands using numerical techniques. Combining Lanczos diagonalization with Chebyshev moment expansion we calculate exactly the photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra and use these to establish the phase diagram of the model. While polaronic features emerge only at strong electron-phonon couplings, pronounced phonon signatures, such as multi-quanta band states, can be found in the Mott insulating regime as well. In order to corroborate the Mott to Peierls transition scenario, we determine the spin and charge excitation gaps by a finite-size scaling analysis based on density-matrix renormalization group calculations.

Non-equilibrium Mott transition in a lattice of Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of the zero temperature Mott insulator- superfluid quantum phase transition in a lattice of weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that crossing the critical point from the insulating to the superfluid phase at a finite rate results in a finite dispersion of current. Viceversa, crossing the critical point from the superfluid phase to the insulating one, results in a finite dispersion of the number of atoms per lattice site. We develop a microscopic dynamical model of the transition, and make quantitative predictions for realistic experiments.

Spin and lattice effects in the Kondo lattice model

The magnetic properties of a system of coexisting localized spins and conduction electrons are investigated within an extended version of the one dimensional Kondo lattice model in which effects stemming from the electron-lattice and on-site Coulomb interactions are explicitly included. After bosonizing the conduction electrons, is it observed that intrinsic inhomogeneities with the statistical scaling properties of a Griffiths phase appear, and determine the spin structure of the localized impurities. The appearance of the inhomogeneities is enhanced by appropriate phonons and acts destructively on the spin ordering. The inhomogeneities appear on well defined length scales and can be compared to the formation of intrinsic mesoscopic metastable patterns which are found in two-fluid phenomenologies.

Survival of quantum effects for observables after decoherence

When a quantum nonlinear system is linearly coupled to an infinite bath of harmonic oscillators, quantum coherence of the system is lost on a decoherence time-scale $τ_D$. Nevertheless, quantum effects for observables may still survive environment-induced decoherence, and be observed for times much larger than the decoherence time-scale. In particular, we show that the Ehrenfest time, which characterizes a departure of quantum dynamics for observables from the corresponding classical dynamics, can be observed for a quasi-classical nonlinear oscillator for times $τ\ggτ_D$. We discuss this observation in relation to recent experiments on quantum nonlinear systems in the quasi-classical region of parameters.

Fibrillar templates and soft phases in systems with short-range dipolar and long-range interactions

We analyze the thermal fluctuations of particles that have a short-range dipolar attraction and a long-range repulsion. In an inhomogeneous particle density region, or "soft phase," filamentary patterns appear which are destroyed only at very high temperatures. The filaments act as a fluctuating template for correlated percolation in which low-energy excitations can move through the stable pattern by local rearrangements. At intermediate temperatures, dynamically averaged checkerboard states appear. We discuss possible implications for cuprate superconducting and related materials.
