A discrete nonlinear model with substrate feedback

We consider a prototypical model in which a nonlinear field (continuum or discrete) evolves on a flexible substrate which feeds back to the evolution of the main field. We identify the underlying physics and potential applications of such a model and examine its simplest one-dimensional Hamiltonian form, which turns out to be a modified Frenkel-Kontorova model coupled to an extra linear equation. We find static kink solutions and study their stability, and then examine moving kinks (the continuum limit of the model is studied too). We observe how the substrate effectively renormalizes properties of the kinks. In particular, a nontrivial finding is that branches of stable and unstable kink solutions may be extended beyond a critical point at which an effective intersite coupling vanishes; passing this critical point does not destabilize the kink. Kink-antikink collisions are also studied, demonstrating alternation between merger and transmission cases.

Dynamical Ordering of Driven Stripe Phases in Quenched Disorder

We examine the dynamics and stripe formation in a system with competing short and long range interactions in the presence of both an applied dc drive and quenched disorder. Without disorder, the system forms stripes organized in a labyrinth state. We find that, when the disorder strength exceeds a critical value, an applied dc drive can induce a dynamical stripe ordering transition to a state that is more ordered than the originating undriven, unpinned pattern. We show that signatures in the structure factor and transport properties correspond to this dynamical reordering transition, and we present the dynamic phase diagram as a function of strengths of disorder and dc drive.

Dynamical Superfluid-Insulator Transition in a Chain of Weakly Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

We predict a dynammical classical superfluid-insulator transition (CSIT) in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in an optical and a magnetic potential. In the tight-binding limit, this system realizes an array of weakly-coupled condensates driven by an external harmonic field. For small displacements of the parabolic trap about the equilibrium position, the BEC center of mass oscillates with the relative phases of neighbouring condensates locked at the same (oscillating) value. For large displacements, the BEC remains localized on the side of the harmonic trap. This is caused by a randomization of the relative phases, while the coherence of each individual condensate in the array is preserved. The CSIT is attributed to a discrete modulational instability, occurring when the BEC center of mass velocity is larger than a critical value, proportional to the tunneling rate between adjacent sites.

Optical Properties of Crystals with Spatial Dispersion: Josephson Plasma Resonance in Layered Superconductors

We derive the transmission coefficient, $T(ω)$, for grazing incidence of crystals with spatial dispersion accounting for the excitation of multiple modes with different wave vectors ${\bf k}$ for a given frequency $ω$. The generalization of the Fresnel formulas contains the refraction indices of these modes as determined by the dielectric function $ε(ω,{\bf k})$. Near frequencies $ω_e$, where the group velocity vanishes, $T(ω)$ depends also on an additional parameter determined by the crystal microstructure. The transmission $T$ is significantly suppressed, if one of the excited modes is decaying into the crystal. We derive these features microscopically for the Josephson plasma resonance in layered superconductors.

Superfluidity versus Disorder in the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We study the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLS) in an annular geometry with on-site defects. The dynamics of a traveling plane-wave maps onto an effective ''non-rigid pendulum'' Hamiltonian. The different regimes include the complete reflection and refocusing of the initial wave, solitonic structures, and a superfluid state. In the superfluid regime, which occurs above a critical value of nonlinearity, a plane-wave travels coherently through the randomly distributed defects. This superfluidity criterion for the DNLS is analogous to (yet very different from) the Landau superfluidity criteria in translationally invariant systems. Experimental implications for the physics of Bose-Einstein condensate gases trapped in optical potentials and of arrays of optical fibers are discussed.

Scattering of a solitary pulse on a local defect or breather

A model is introduced to describe guided propagation of a linear or nonlinear pulse which encounters a localized nonlinear defect, that may be either static or breather-like one (the model with the static defect applies to an optical pulse in a long fiber link with an inserted additional section of a nonlinear fiber). In the case when the host waveguide is linear, the pulse has a Gaussian shape. In that case, an immediate result of its interaction with the nonlinear defect can be found in an exact analytical form, amounting to transformation of the incoming Gaussian into an infinite array of overlapping Gaussian pulses. Further evolution of the array in the linear host medium is found numerically by means of the Fourier transform. An important ingredient of the linear medium is the third-order dispersion, that eventually splits the array into individual pulses. If the host medium is nonlinear, the input pulse is taken as a fundamental soliton. The soliton is found to be much more resistant to the action of the nonlinear defect than the Gaussian pulse in the linear host medium. In this case, the third-order-dispersion splits the soliton proper and wavepackets generated by the action of the defect.

Dynamics of Quantum Phase Transition in an Array of Josephson Junctions

We study the dynamics of the Mott insulator-superfluid quantum phase transition in a periodic 1D array of Josephson junctions. We show that crossing the critical point diabatically i.e. at a finite rate with a quench time $τ_Q$ induces finite quantum fluctuations of the current around the loop proportional to $τ_Q^{-1/6}$. This scaling could be experimentally verified with in array of weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates or superconducting grains.

Incommensurate Magnetism around Vortices and Impurities in High-$T_c$ Superconductors

By solving self-consistently an effective Hamiltonian including interactions for both antiferromagnetic spin-density wave (SDW) and d-wave superconducting (DSC) orderings, a comparison study is made for the local magnetic structure around superconducting vortices and unitary impurities. To represent the optimally doped regime of cuprates, the parameter values are chosen such that the DSC is dominant while the SDW is vanishingly small. We show that when vortices are introduced into the superconductor, an oscillating SDW is induced around them. The oscillation period of the SDW is microscopically found, consistent with experiments, to be eight lattice constants ($8a_0$). The associated charge-density wave (CDW) oscillates with a period of one half ($4a_0$) of the SDW. In the case of unitary impurities, we find a SDW modulation with identical periodicity, however without an associated CDW. We propose neutron scattering experiments to test this prediction.

Depinning and Dynamics of Systems with Competing Interactions in Quenched Disorder

We examine the depinning and driven dynamics of a system in which there is a competition between long range Coulomb repulsive and short range attractive interactions. In the absence of disorder the system forms Wigner crystal, stripe, and clump phases as the attractive interaction is increased. With quenched disorder, these phases are fragmented and there is a finite depinning threshold. The stripe phase is the most strongly pinned and shows hysteretic transport properties. At higher drives beyond depinning, a dynamical reordering transition occurs in all the phases, which is associated with a characteristic transport signature.

Dynamics of a single electron in the disordered Holstein model

We study, at zero temperature, the dynamics of a single electron in a Holstein model augmented by site-diagonal, binary-alloy type disorder. The average over the phonon vacuum and the alloy configurations is performed within a generalized dynamical coherent potential approximation. We present numerical results for a Bethe lattice with infinite coordination number. In particular, we investigate, in the intermediate electron-phonon coupling regime, the spectral and diffusion properties in the vicinity of the high-energy edge of the lowest polaronic subband. To characterize the diffusion properties, we define a spectrally resolved delocalization time, which is, for a given energy, the characteristic time scale on which the electron leaves a given site. We find the delocalization times substantially enhanced for states with a large phonon content, i.e., in the absence (presence) of alloy-type disorder at the high-energy edge(s) of the polaronic subband (mini-subbands). According to their delocalization times, we discriminate between ``fast'' quasi-particle-like and ``sluggish'' defect-like polaron states and qualitatively address the issue of trapping of an electronic carrier.

Analytic solutions for nonlinear waves in coupled reacting systems

We analyze a system of reacting elements harmonically coupled to nearest neighbors in the continuum limit. An analytic solution is found for traveling waves. The procedure is used to find oscillatory as well as solitary waves. A comparison is made between exact solutions and solutions of the piecewise linearized system, showing how the linearization affects the amplitude and frequency of the solutions.

Peierls-insulator Mott-insulator transition in 1D

In an attempt to clarify the nature of the crossover from a Peierls band insulator to a Mott Hubbard insulator, we analyze ground-state and spectral properties of the one-dimensional half-filled Holstein Hubbard model using exact diagonalization techniques.

Non-linear excitations in 1D correlated insulators

In this work we investigate charge transport in one-dimensional (1D) insulators via semi-classical and perturbative renormalization group (RG) methods. We consider the problem of electron-electron, electron-phonon and electron-two-level system interactions. We show that non-linear collective modes such as polarons and solitons are reponsible for transport. We find a new excitation in the Mott insulator: the polaronic soliton. We discuss the differences between band and Mott insulators in terms of their spin spectrum and obtain the charge and spin gaps in each one of these systems. We show that electron-electron interactions provide strong renormalizations of the energy scales in the problem.

DMRG and the Two Dimensional t-J Model

We describe in detail the application of the recent non-Abelian Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) algorithm to the two dimensional t-J model. This extension of the DMRG algorithm allows us to keep the equivalent of twice as many basis states as the conventional DMRG algorithm for the same amount of computational effort, which permits a deeper understanding of the nature of the ground state.

Complexity at Mesoscale

Through three examples we illustrate some of the concepts and ingredients required for pattern formation at mesoscopic scales. Two examples build on microscopic models where mesoscopic patterns emerge from homogeneous ground states driven into instability by external forcing. In contrast, the third example builds on a mesoscopic phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau type model of solid-solid structural phase transitions. Here, mesoscopic textures emerge as a result of competing length scales arising from the constraints of elastic compatibility.

Dynamical Stability of an Ion in a Linear Trap as a Solid-State Problem of Electron Localization

When an ion confined in a linear ion trap interacts with a coherent laser field, the internal degrees of freedom, related to the electron transitions, couple to the vibrational degree of freedom of the ion. As a result of this interaction, quantum dynamics of the vibrational degree of freedom becomes complicated, and in some ranges of parameters even chaotic. We analyze the vibrational ion dynamics using a formal analogy with the solid-state problem of electron localization. In particular, we show how the resonant approximation used in analysis of the ion dynamics, leads to a transition from a two-dimensional (2D) to a one-dimensional problem (1D) of electron localization. The localization length in the solid-state problem is estimated in cases of weak and strong interaction between the cites of the 2D cell by using the methods of resonance perturbation theory, common in analysis of 1D time-dependent dynamical systems.

Analytic approach to the one-dimensional spin-Peierls system in the entire frequency range

We use the two cut-off renormalization group (RG) method to study the spin-Peierls model in one-dimension for the entire phonon frequency range. We integrate out the phonon and solve the effective Fermion system via mean field and RG methods. We make use of the symmetry that the Neel, dimerization, and spin current order parameters form an SU(2) triplet based on resolving the Fermion into left and right movers. We present the phase diagram and discuss its implications for the organic charge-transfer salt (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$.

Phonons and Solitons in 1D Mott Insulators

We study the problem of one-dimensional (1D) Luttinger liquids in the insulating Mott-Hubbard phase in the presence of acoustic phonons in the semiclassical limit. We show that solitonic excitations can propagate freely in the system and the energy required to produce a soliton is reduced by a polaronic effect. We find a critical value of the electron-phonon coupling constant for which this energy vanishes.
