Renormalized Yang-Mills Energy on Poincaré-Einstein Manifolds

We prove that the renormalized Yang-Mills energy on six dimensional Poincaré-Einstein spaces can be expressed as the bulk integral of a local, pointwise conformally invariant integrand. We show that the latter agrees with the corresponding anomaly boundary integrand in the seven dimensional renormalized Yang-Mills energy. Our methods rely on a generalization of the Chang-Qing-Yang method for computing renormalized volumes of Poincaré-Einstein manifolds, as well as known scattering theory results for Schrödinger operators with short range potentials.

Metric projective geometry, BGG detour complexes and partially massless gauge theories

A projective geometry is an equivalence class of torsion free connections sharing the same unparametrised geodesics; this is a basic structure for understanding physical systems. Metric projective geometry is concerned with the interaction of projective and pseudo-Riemannian geometry. We show that the BGG machinery of projective geometry combines with structures known as Yang-Mills detour complexes to produce a general tool for generating invariant pseudo-Riemannian gauge theories. This produces (detour) complexes of differential operators corresponding to gauge invariances and dynamics. We show, as an application, that curved versions of these sequences give geometric characterizations of the obstructions to propagation of higher spins in Einstein spaces. Further, we show that projective BGG detour complexes generate both gauge invariances and gauge invariant constraint systems for partially massless models: the input for this machinery is a projectively invariant gauge operator corresponding to the first operator of a certain BGG sequence. We also connect this technology to the log-radial reduction method and extend the latter to Einstein backgrounds.

Einstein metrics in projective geometry

It is well known that pseudo-Riemannian metrics in the projective class of a given torsion free affine connection can be obtained from (and are equivalent to) the solutions of a certain overdetermined projectively invariant differential equation. This equation is a special case of a so-called first BGG equation. The general theory of such equations singles out a subclass of so-called normal solutions. We prove that non-degerate normal solutions are equivalent to pseudo-Riemannian Einstein metrics in the projective class and observe that this connects to natural projective extensions of the Einstein condition.

Normal BGG solutions and polynomials

First BGG operators are a large class of overdetermined linear differential operators intrinsically associated to a parabolic geometry on a manifold. The corresponding equations include those controlling infinitesimal automorphisms, higher symmetries, and many other widely studied PDE of geometric origin. The machinery of BGG sequences also singles out a subclass of solutions called normal solutions. These correspond to parallel tractor fields and hence to (certain) holonomy reductions of the canonical normal Cartan connection. Using the normal Cartan connection, we define a special class of local frames for any natural vector bundle associated to a parabolic geometry. We then prove that the coefficient functions of any normal solution of a first BGG operator with respect to such a frame are polynomials in the normal coordinates of the parabolic geometry. A bound on the degree of these polynomials in terms of representation theory data is derived. For geometries locally isomorphic to the homogeneous model of the geometry we explicitly compute the local frames mentioned above. Together with the fact that on such structures all solutions are normal, we obtain a complete description of all first BGG solutions in this case. Finally, we prove that in the general case the polynominal system coming from a normal solution is the pull-back of a polynomial system that solves the corresponding problem on the homogeneous model. Thus we can derive a complete list of potential normal solutions on curved geometries. Morover, questions concerning the zero locus of solutions, as well as related finer geometric and smooth data, are reduced to a study of polynomial systems and real algebraic sets.

Projective BGG equations, algebraic sets, and compactifications of Einstein geometries

For curved projective manifolds we introduce a notion of a normal tractor frame field, based around any point. This leads to canonical systems of (redundant) coordinates that generalise the usual homogeneous coordinates on projective space. These give preferred local maps to the model projective space that encode geometric contact with the model to a level that is optimal, in a suitable sense. In terms of the trivialisations arising from the special frames, normal solutions of classes of natural linear PDE (so-called first BGG equations) are shown to be necessarily polynomial in the generalised homogeneous coordinates; the polynomial system is the pull back of a polynomial system that solves the corresponding problem on the model. Thus questions concerning the zero locus of solutions, as well as related finer geometric and smooth data, are reduced to a study of the corresponding polynomial systems and algebraic sets. We show that a normal solution determines a canonical manifold stratification that reflects an orbit decomposition of the model. Applications include the construction of structures that are analogues of Poincare-Einstein manifolds.

The so(d+2,2) Minimal Representation and Ambient Tractors: the Conformal Geometry of Momentum Space

Tractor Calculus is a powerful tool for analyzing Weyl invariance; although fundamentally linked to the Cartan connection, it may also be arrived at geometrically by viewing a conformal manifold as the space of null rays in a Lorentzian ambient space. For dimension d conformally flat manifolds we show that the (d+2)-dimensional Fefferman--Graham ambient space corresponds to the momentum space of a massless scalar field. Hence on the one hand the null cone parameterizes physical momentum excitations, while on the other hand, null rays correspond to points in the underlying conformal manifold. This allows us to identify a fundamental set of tractor operators with the generators of conformal symmetries of a scalar field theory in a momentum representation. Moreover, these constitute the minimal representation of the non-compact conformal Lie symmetry algebra of the scalar field with Kostant--Kirillov dimension d+1. Relaxing the conformally flat requirement, we find that while the conformal Lie algebra of tractor operators is deformed by curvature corrections, higher relations in the enveloping algebra corresponding to the minimal representation persist. We also discuss potential applications of these results to physics and conformal geometry.

Tractors, Mass and Weyl Invariance

Deser and Nepomechie established a relationship between masslessness and rigid conformal invariance by coupling to a background metric and demanding local Weyl invariance, a method which applies neither to massive theories nor theories which rely upon gauge invariances for masslessness. We extend this method to describe massive and gauge invariant theories using Weyl invariance. The key idea is to introduce a new scalar field which is constant when evaluated at the scale corresponding to the metric of physical interest. This technique relies on being able to efficiently construct Weyl invariant theories. This is achieved using tractor calculus--a mathematical machinery designed for the study of conformal geometry. From a physics standpoint, this amounts to arranging fields in multiplets with respect to the conformal group but with novel Weyl transformation laws. Our approach gives a mechanism for generating masses from Weyl weights. Breitenlohner--Freedman stability bounds for Anti de Sitter theories arise naturally as do direct derivations of the novel Weyl invariant theories given by Deser and Nepomechie. In constant curvature spaces, partially massless theories--which rely on the interplay between mass and gauge invariance--are also generated by our method. Another simple consequence is conformal invariance of the maximal depth partially massless theories. Detailed examples for spins s<=2 are given including tractor and component actions, on-shell and off-shell approaches and gauge invariances. For all spins s>=2 we give tractor equations of motion unifying massive, massless, and partially massless theories.

Weyl Invariance and the Origins of Mass

By a uniform and simple Weyl invariant coupling of scale and matter fields, we construct theories that unify massless, massive, and partially massless excitations. Masses are related to tractor Weyl weights, and Breitenlohner-Freedman stability bounds in anti de Sitter amount to reality of these weights. The method relies on tractor calculus -- mathematical machinery allowing Weyl invariance to be kept manifest at all stages. The equivalence between tractor and higher spin systems with arbitrary spins and masses is also considered.

Invariant Prolongation and Detour Complexes

In these expository notes we draw together and develop the ideas behind some recent progress in two directions: the treatment of finite type partial differential operators by prolongation, and a class of differential complexes known as detour complexes. This elaborates on a lecture given at the IMA Summer Programme ``Symmetries and overdetermined systems of partial differential equations''.

Higher Spin Gravitational Couplings and the Yang--Mills Detour Complex

Gravitational interactions of higher spin fields are generically plagued by inconsistencies. We present a simple framework that couples higher spins to a broad class of gravitational backgrounds (including Ricci flat and Einstein) consistently at the classical level. The model is the simplest example of a Yang--Mills detour complex, which recently has been applied in the mathematical setting of conformal geometry. An analysis of asymptotic scattering states about the trivial field theory vacuum in the simplest version of the theory yields a rich spectrum marred by negative norm excitations. The result is a theory of a physical massless graviton, scalar field, and massive vector along with a degenerate pair of zero norm photon excitations. Coherent states of the unstable sector of the model do have positive norms, but their evolution is no longer unitary and their amplitudes grow with time. The model is of considerable interest for braneworld scenarios and ghost condensation models, and invariant theory.

Laplacian operators and Q-curvature on conformally Einstein manifolds

A new definition of canonical conformal differential operators $P_k$ ($k=1,2,...)$, with leading term a $k^{\rm th}$ power of the Laplacian, is given for conformally Einstein manifolds of any signature. These act between density bundles and, more generally, between weighted tractor bundles of any rank. By construction these factor into a power of a fundamental Laplacian associated to Einstein metrics. There are natural conformal Laplacian operators on density bundles due to Graham-Jenne-Mason-Sparling (GJMS). It is shown that on conformally Einstein manifolds these agree with the $P_k$ operators and hence on Einstein manifolds the GJMS operators factor into a product of second order Laplacian type operators. In even dimension $n$ the GJMS operators are defined only for $1\leq k\leq n/2$ and so, on conformally Einstein manifolds, the $P_{k}$ give an extension of this family of operators to operators of all even orders. For $n$ even and $k>n/2$ the operators $P_k$ are given by a natural formula in terms of an Einstein metric but are not natural as conformally invariant operators. They are shown to be nevertheless canonical objects on conformally Einstein structures. There are generalisations of these results to operators between weighted tractor bundles. It is shown that on Einstein manifolds the Branson Q-curvature is constant and an explicit formula for the constant is given in terms of the scalar curvature. As part of development, conformally invariant tractor equations equivalent to the conformal Killing equation are presented.

Almost conformally Einstein manifolds and obstructions

A Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian (or conformal) structure is conformally Einstein if and only if there is a suitably generic parallel section of a certain vector bundle -- the so-called standard conformal tractor bundle. We show that this characterisation leads to a systematic approach to constructing obstructions to conformally Einstein metrics. Relaxing the requirement that the parallel tractor field be generic gives a natural generalisation of the Einstein equations.

Invariant local twistor calculus for quaternionic structures and related geometries

New universal invariant operators are introduced in a class of geometries which include the quaternionic structures and their generalisations as well as 4-dimensional conformal (spin) geometries. It is shown that, in a broad sense, all invariants and invariant operators arise from these universal operators and that they may be used to reduce all invariants problems to corresponding algebraic problems involving homomorphisms between modules of certain parabolic subgroups of Lie groups. Explicit application of the operators is illustrated by the construction of all non-standard operators between exterior forms on a large class of the geometries which includes the quaternionic structures.

Geometry of Quantum Homogeneous Vector Bundles and Representation Theory of Quantum Groups I

Quantum homogeneous vector bundles are introduced by a direct description of their sections in the context of Woronowicz type compact quantum groups. The bundles carry natural topologies inherited from the quantum groups, and their sections furnish projective modules over algebras of functions on quantum homogeneous spaces. Further properties of the quantum homogeneous vector bundles are investigated, and their applications to the representation theory of quantum groups are explored. In particular, quantum Frobenius reciprocity and a generalized Borel-Weil theorem are established.
