Predicted defect induced vortex core switching in thin magnetic nanodisks

We investigate the influence of artificial defects (small holes) inserted into magnetic nanodisks on the vortex core dynamics. One and two holes (antidots) are considered. In general, the core falls into the hole but, in particular, we would like to remark an interesting phenomenon not yet observed, which is the vortex core switching induced by the vortex-hole interactions. It occurs for the case with only one hole and for very special conditions involving the hole size and position as well as the disk size. Any small deformation in the disk geometry such as the presence of a second antidot changes completely the vortex dynamics and the vortex core eventually falls into one of the defects. After trapped, the vortex center still oscillates with a very high frequency and small amplitude around the defect center.

Magnetic monopole and string excitations in a two-dimensional spin ice

We study the magnetic excitations of a square lattice spin-ice recently produced in an artificial form, as an array of nanoscale magnets. Our analysis, based upon the dipolar interaction between the nanomagnetic islands, correctly reproduces the ground-state observed experimentally. In addition, we find magnetic monopole-like excitations effectively interacting by means of the usual Coulombic plus a linear confining potential, the latter being related to a string-like excitation binding the monopoles pairs, what indicates that the fractionalization of magnetic dipoles may not be so easy in two dimensions. These findings contrast this material with the three-dimensional analogue, where such monopoles experience only the Coulombic interaction. We discuss, however, two entropic effects that affect the monopole interactions: firstly, the string configurational entropy may loose the string tension and then, free magnetic monopoles should also be found in lower dimensional spin ices; secondly, in contrast to the string configurational entropy, an entropically driven Coulomb force, which increases with temperature, has the opposite effect of confining the magnetic defects.

A model for structural defects in nanomagnets

A model for describing structural pointlike defects in nanoscaled ferromagnetic materials is presented. Its details are explicitly developed whenever interacting with a vortex-like state comprised in a thin nanodisk. Among others, our model yields results for the vortex equilibrium position under the influence of several defects along with an external magnetic field in good qualitative agreement with experiments. We also discuss how such defects may affect the vortex motion, like its gyrotropic oscillation and dynamical polarization reversal.

How hole defects modify vortex dynamics in ferromagnetic nanodisks

Defects introduced in ferromagnetic nanodisks may deeply affect the structure and dynamics of stable vortex-like magnetization. Here, analytical techniques are used for studying, among other dynamical aspects, how a small cylindrical cavity modify the oscillatory modes of the vortex. For instance, we have realized that if the vortex is nucleated out from the hole its gyrotropic frequencies are shifted below. Modifications become even more pronounced when the vortex core is partially or completely captured by the hole. In these cases, the gyrovector can be partially or completely suppressed, so that the associated frequencies increase considerably, say, from some times to several powers. Possible relevance of our results for understanding other aspects of vortex dynamics in the presence of cavities and/or structural defects are also discussed.

On topological spin excitations on a rigid torus

We study Heisenberg model of classical spins lying on the toroidal support, whose internal and external radii are $r$ and $R$, respectively. The isotropic regime is characterized by a fractional soliton solution. Whenever the torus size is very large, $R\to\infty$, its charge equals unity and the soliton effectively lies on an infinite cylinder. However, for R=0 the spherical geometry is recovered and we obtain that configuration and energy of a soliton lying on a sphere. Vortex-like configurations are also supported: in a ring torus ($R>r$) such excitations present no core where energy could blow up. At the limit $R\to\infty$ we are effectively describing it on an infinite cylinder, where the spins appear to be practically parallel to each other, yielding no net energy. On the other hand, in a horn torus ($R=r$) a singular core takes place, while for $R<r$ (spindle torus) two such singularities appear. If $R$ is further diminished until vanish we recover vortex configuration on a sphere.

Heisenberg model on a space with negative curvature: topological spin textures on the pseudosphere

Heisenberg-like spins lying on the pseudosphere (a 2-dimensional infinite space with constant negative curvature) cannot give rise to stable soliton solutions. Only fractional solutions can be stabilized on this surface provided that at least a hole is incorporated. We also address the issue of `in-plane' vortices, in the XY regime. Interestingly, the energy of a single vortex no longer blows up as the excitation spreads to infinity. This yields a non-confining potential between a vortex and a antivortex at large distances so that the pair may dissociate at arbitrarily low temperature.

Analytical and Monte Carlo study of two antidots in magnetic nanodisks with vortex-like magnetization

How stable vortex-like magnetization in magnetic nanodisks with small aspect ratio ($L/R<<1$) is affected by two antidots is investigated analytically and by Monte Carlo simulations. For suitable ranges of the physical parameters this vortex presents bistable states when pinned around the antidots. The hysteresis loop obtained shows a central loop associated to the pinning mechanism of the vortex at the antidots. Our results agree qualitatively well with those provided by experiments and micromagnetic simulations.

Geometrical pinning of magnetic vortices induced by a deficit angle on a surface: anisotropic spins on a conic space background

We study magnetic vortex-like excitations lying on a conic space background. Two types of them are obtained. Their energies appear to be linearly dependent on the conical aperture parameter, besides of being logarithmically divergent with the sample size. In addition, we realize a geometrical-like pinning of the vortex, say, it is energetically favorable for it to nucleate around the conical apex. We also study the problem of two vortices on the cone and obtain an interesting effect on such a geometry: excitations of the same charge, then repealing each other, may nucleate around the apex for suitable cone apertures. We also pay attention to the problem of the vortex pair and how its dissociation temperature depends upon conical geometry.

Extinction of BKT transition by nonmagnetic disorder in planar-symmetry spin models

The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in two-dimensional planar rotator and XY models on a square lattice, diluted by randomly placed vacancies, is studied here using hybrid Monte Carlo simulations that combine single spin flip, cluster and over-relaxation techniques. The transition temperature $T_c$ is determined as a function of vacancy density $ρ_{vac}$ by calculations of the helicity modulus and the by finite-size scaling of the in-plane magnetic susceptibility. The results for $T_c$ are consistent with those from the much less precise fourth-order cumulant of Binder. $T_c$ is found to decrease monotonically with increasing $ρ_{vac}$, and falls to zero close to the square lattice percolation limit, $ρ_{vac}\approx 0.41$ . The result is physically reasonable: the long-range orientational order of the low-temperature phase cannot be maintained in the absence of sufficient spin interactions across the lattice.

Heisenberg spins on a cone: an interplay between geometry and magnetism

This work is devoted to the study of how spin texture excitations are affected by the presence of a static nonmagnetic impurity whenever they lie on a conical support. We realize a number of novelties as compared to the flat plane case. Indeed, by virtue of the conical shape, the interaction potential between a soliton and an impurity appears to become stronger as long as the cone is tighten. As a consequence, a new kind of solitonic excitation shows up exhibiting lower energy than in the absence of such impurity. In addition, we conclude that such an energy is also dependent upon conical aperture, getting lower values as the latter is decreased. We also discuss how an external magnetic field (Zeeman coupling) affects static solitonic textures, providing instability to their structure.

Vortex behavior near a spin vacancy in 2D XY-magnets

The dynamical behavior of anisotropic two dimensional Heisenberg models is still a matter of controversy. The existence of a central peak at all temperatures and a rich structure of magnon peaks are not yet understood. It seems that the central peaks are related, in some way, to structures like vortices. In order to contribute to the discussion of the dynamical behavior of the model we use Monte Carlo and spin dynamics simulations as well analytical calculations to study the behavior of vortices in the presence of nonmagnetic impurities. Our simulations show that vortices are attracted and trapped by the impurities. Using this result we show that if we suppose that vortices are not very much disturbed by the presence of the impurities, then they work as an attractive potential to the vortices explaining the observed behavior in our simulations.

On Phase Transition and Vortex Stability in the Generalized XY Models

We study a recent generalization proposed for the XY model in two and three dimensions. Using both, the continuum limit and discrete lattice, we obtained the vortex configuration and shown that out-of-plane vortex solutions are deeply jeopardized whenever the parameter of generalization, $L$, is increased. The critical temperature for such models is calculated using the self consistent harmonic approximation. In both, two- and three-dimensional cases, such a temperature decreases with raising $L$. Our results are also compared with other approximated methods available in the literature.

Monte Carlo study of the critical temperature for the planar rotator model with nonmagnetic impurities

We performed Monte Carlo simulations to calculate the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) temperature $T_{BKT}$ for the two-dimensional planar rotator model in the presence of nonmagnetic impurity concentration $(ρ)$. As expected, our calculation shows that the BKT temperature decreases as the spin vacancies increase. There is a critical dilution $ρ_c \approx 0.3$ at which $T_{BKT} =0$. The effective interaction between a vortex-antivortex pair and a static nonmagnetic impurity is studied analytically. A simple phenomenological argument based on the pair-impurity interaction is proposed to justify the simulations.

Vortices in the presence of a nonmagnetic atom impurity in 2D XY ferromagnets

Using a model of nonmagnetic impurity potential, we have examined the behavior of planar vortex solutions in the classical two-dimensional XY ferromagnets in the presence of a spin vacancy localized out of the vortex core. Our results show that a spinless atom impurity gives rise to an effective potential that repels the vortex structure.

A Remark on the Geometry of Two-Dimensional Anisotropic Non-Linear Sigma-Models

One discusses here the connection between σ-model gauge anomalies and the existence of a connection with torsion that does not flatten the Ricci tensor of the target manifold, by considering a number of non-symmetric coset spaces. The influence of an eventual anisotropy on a certain direction of the target manifold is also contemplated.
