Fisher information and thermodynamics' 1st. law

It was recently shown, starting from first principles, that thermodynamics' first law (TFL) can be microscopically obtained without need of invoking the adiabatic theorem (AT) [Physica A, {\bf 356}, 167 (2005)]. We show here that a TFL can also be found for Fisher's information measure, following a similar procedure. Further, it is proved that enforcing the Fisher-first law requirements in a process in which the probability distribution is infinitesimally varied is equivalent to minimizing Fisher's information measure subject to appropriate constraints.

On the Connection Between Entanglement and the Speed of Quantum Evolution

It has been recently pointed out [V. Giovanetti, S. Lloyd, and L. Maccone, Europhys. Lett., {\bf 62} pp. 615-621 (2003)] that, for certain classes of states, quantum entanglement enhances the "speed" of evolution of composite quantum systems, as measured by the time a given initial state requires to evolve to an orthogonal state. We provide here a systematic study of this effect for pure states of bipartite systems of low dimensionality, considering both distinguishable (two-qubits) subsystems, and systems constituted of two indistinguishable particles.

Superstatistics Based on the Microcanonical Ensemble

Superstatistics is a "statistics" of "canonical-ensemble statistics". In analogy, we consider here a similar theoretical construct, but based upon the microcanonical ensemble. The mixing parameter is not the temperature but the index q associated with the non-extensive, power law entropy Sq.

Landau-Ginzburg method applied to finite fermion systems: Pairing in Nuclei

Given the spectrum of a Hamiltonian, a methodology is developed which employs the Landau-Ginsburg method for characterizing phase transitions in infinite systems to identify phase transition remnants in finite fermion systems. As a first application of our appproach we discuss pairing in finite nuclei.

On the Cut-Off Prescriptions Associated with Power-Law Generalized Thermostatistics

We revisit the cut-off prescriptions which are needed in order to specify completely the form of Tsallis' maximum entropy distributions. For values of the Tsallis entropic parameter $q>1$ we advance an alternative cut-off prescription and discuss some of its basic mathematical properties. As an illustration of the new cut-off prescription we consider in some detail the $q$-generalized quantum distributions which have recently been shown to reproduce various experimental results related to high $T_c$ superconductors.

Jensen-Shannon divergence, Fisher information, and Wootters' hypothesis

We discuss different statistical distances in probability space, with emphasis on the Jensen-Shannon divergence, vis-a-vis {\it metrics} in Hilbert space and their relationship with Fisher's information measure. This study provides further reconfirmation of Wootters' hypothesis concerning the possibility that statistical fluctuations in the outcomes of measurements be regarded (at least partly) as responsible for the Hilbert-space structure of quantum mechanics.

Nonadditive statistical measure of complexity and values of the entropic index q

A two-parameter family of statistical measures of complexity are introduced based on the Tsallis-type nonadditive entropies. This provides a unified framework for the study of the recently proposed various measures of complexity as well as for the discussion of a whole new class of measures. As a special case, a generalization of the measure proposed by Landsberg and his co-workers based on the Tsallis entropy indexed by q is discussed in detail and its behavior is illustrated using the logistic map. The value of the entropic index, q, with which the maximum of the measure of complexity is located at the edge of chaos, is calculated.

Inclusion relations among separability criteria

We revisit the application of different separability criteria by recourse to an exhaustive Monte Carlo exploration involving the pertinent state-space of pure and mixed states. The corresponding chain of implications of different criteria is in such a way numerically elucidated. We also quantify, for a bipartite system of arbitrary dimension, the proportion of states $ρ$ that can be distilled according to a definite criterion. Our work can be regarded as a complement to the recent review paper by B. Terhal [Theor. Comp. Sci. {\bf 287} (2002) 313]. Some questions posed there receive an answer here.

Some Features of the Conditional $q$-Entropies of Composite Quantum Systems

The study of conditional $q$-entropies in composite quantum systems has recently been the focus of considerable interest, particularly in connection with the problem of separability. The $q$-entropies depend on the density matrix $ρ$ through the quantity $ω_q = Trρ^q$, and admit as a particular instance the standard von Neumann entropy in the limit case $q\to 1$. A comprehensive numerical survey of the space of pure and mixed states of bipartite systems is here performed, in order to determine the volumes in state space occupied by those states exhibiting various special properties related to the signs of their conditional $q$-entropies and to their connections with other separability-related features, including the majorization condition. Different values of the entropic parameter $q$ are considered, as well as different values of the dimensions $N_1$ and $N_2$ of the Hilbert spaces associated with the constituting subsystems. Special emphasis is paid to the analysis of the monotonicity properties, both as a function of $q$ and as a function of $N_1$ and $N_2$, of the various entropic functionals considered.

How fundamental is the character of thermal uncertainty relations?

We show that thermodynamic uncertainties do not preserve their form if the underlying probability distribution is transformed into an escort one. Heisenberg's relations, on the other hand, are not affected by such transformation. We conclude therefore that the former uncertainty cannot be as fundamental as the quantum one.

On the Correlations Between Quantum Entanglement and q-Information Measures

In the present study we revisit the application of the $q$-information measures $R_q$ of Rényi's and $S_q$ of Tsallis' to the discussion of special features of two qubits systems. More specifically, we study the correlations between the $q$-information measures and the entanglement of formation of a general (pure or mixed) state $ρ$ describing a system of two qubits. The analysis uses a Monte Carlo procedure involving the 15-dimensional 2-qubits space of pure and mixed states, under the assumption that these states are uniformly distributed according to the product measure recently introduced by Zyczkowski {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 58} (1998) 883].

The statistics of the entanglement changes generated by the Hadamard-CNOT quantum circuit

We consider the change of entanglement of formation $ΔE$ produced by the Hadamard-CNOT circuit on a general (pure or mixed) state $ρ$ describing a system of two qubits. We study numerically the probabilities of obtaining different values of $ΔE$, assuming that the initial state is randomly distributed in the space of all states according to the product measure recently introduced by Zyczkowski {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 58} (1998) 883].

Nonextensive Thermostatistics and the H-Theorem

The kinetic foundations of Tsallis' nonextensive thermostatistics are investigated through Boltzmann's transport equation approach. Our analysis follows from a nonextensive generalization of the ``molecular chaos hypothesis". For $q>0$, the $q$-transport equation satisfies an $H$-theorem based on Tsallis entropy. It is also proved that the collisional equilibrium is given by Tsallis' $q$-nonextensive velocity distribution.

Conditional q-Entropies and Quantum Separability: A Numerical Exploration

We revisit the relationship between quantum separability and the sign of the relative q-entropies of composite quantum systems. The q-entropies depend on the density matrix eigenvalues p_i through the quantity omega_q = sum_i p_i^q. Renyi's and Tsallis' measures constitute particular instances of these entropies. We perform a systematic numerical survey of the space of mixed states of two-qubit systems in order to determine, as a function of the degree of mixture, and for different values of the entropic parameter q, the volume in state space occupied by those states characterized by positive values of the relative entropy. Similar calculations are performed for qubit-qutrit systems and for composite systems described by Hilbert spaces of larger dimensionality. We pay particular attention to the limit case q --> infinity. Our numerical results indicate that, as the dimensionalities of both subsystems increase, composite quantum systems tend, as far as their relative q-entropies are concerned, to behave in a classical way.

A Schroedinger link between non-equilibrium thermodynamics and Fisher information

It is known that equilibrium thermodynamics can be deduced from a constrained Fisher information extemizing process. We show here that, more generally, both non-equilibrium and equilibrium thermodynamics can be obtained from such a Fisher treatment. Equilibrium thermodynamics corresponds to the ground state solution, and non-equilibrium thermodynamics corresponds to excited state solutions, of a Schroedinger wave equation (SWE). That equation appears as an output of the constrained variational process that extremizes Fisher information. Both equilibrium- and non-equilibrium situations can thereby be tackled by one formalism that clearly exhibits the fact that thermodynamics and quantum mechanics can both be expressed in terms of a formal SWE, out of a common informational basis.

On the Entanglement Properties of Two-Rebits Systems

Following the recent work of Caves, Fuchs, and Rungta [Found. of Phys. Lett. {\bf 14} (2001) 199], we discuss some entanglement properties of two-rebits systems. We pay particular attention to the relationship between entanglement and purity. In particular, we determine (i) the probability densities for finding pure and mixed states with a given amount of entanglement, and (ii) the mean entanglement of two-rebits states as a function of the participation ratio.

A Maxwellian Path to the q-Nonextensive Velocity Distribution Function

Maxwell's first derivation of the equilibrium distribution function for a dilute gas is generalized in the spirit of the nonextensive q-statistics proposed by Tsallis. As an application, the q-Doppler broadening of spectral lines due to the random thermal motion of the radiating atoms is derived.

Numerical Determination of the Distribution of Energies for the XY-model

We compute numerically the distribution of energies W(E,N) for the XY-model with short-range and long-range interactions. We find that in both cases the distribution can be fitted to the functional form: W(E,N) ~ exp(N f(E,N)), with f(E,N) an intensive function of the energy.
