The Smeagol method for spin- and molecular-electronics

{\it Ab initio} computational methods for electronic transport in nanoscaled systems are an invaluable tool for the design of quantum devices. We have developed a flexible and efficient algorithm for evaluating $I$-$V$ characteristics of atomic junctions, which integrates the non-equilibrium Green's function method with density functional theory. This is currently implemented in the package {\it Smeagol}. The heart of {\it Smeagol} is our novel scheme for constructing the surface Green's functions describing the current/voltage probes. It consists of a direct summation of both open and closed scattering channels together with a regularization procedure of the Hamiltonian, and provides great improvements over standard recursive methods. In particular it allows us to tackle material systems with complicated electronic structures, such as magnetic transition metals. Here we present a detailed description of {\it Smeagol} together with an extensive range of applications relevant for the two burgeoning fields of spin and molecular-electronics.

Single channel conductance of H$_2$ molecules attached to platinum or palladium electrodes

We report a detailed theoretical study of the bonding and conduction properties of an hydrogen molecule joining either platinum or palladium electrodes. We show that an atomic arrangement where the molecule is placed perpendicular to the electrodes is unstable for all distances between electrodes. In contrast, the configuration where the molecule bridges the electrodes is stable in a wide range of distances. In this last case the bonding state of the molecule does not hybridize with the leads and remains localized within the junction. As a result, this state does not transmit charge so that electronic transport is carried only through the anti-bonding state. This fact leads to conductances of 1 $G_0$ at most, where $G_0=2e^2/h$. We indeed find that G is equal to 0.9 and 0.6 $G_0$ for Pt and Pd contacts respectively.

Asymmetric I-V characteristics and magnetoresistance in magnetic point contacts

We present a theoretical study of the transport properties of magnetic point contacts under bias. Our calculations are based on the Keldish's non-equilibrium Green's function formalism combined with a self-consistent empirical tight-binding Hamiltonian, which describes both strong ferromagnetism and charging effects. We demonstrate that large magnetoresistance solely due to electronic effects can be found when a sharp domain wall forms inside a magnetic atomic-scale point contact. Moreover we show that the symmetry of the $I$-$V$ characteristic depends on the position of the domain wall in the constriction. In particular diode-like curves can arise when the domain wall is placed off-center within the point contact, although the whole structure does not present any structural asymmetry.

The role of structural evolution on the quantum conductance behavior of gold nanowires during stretching

Gold nanowires generated by mechanical stretching have been shown to adopt only three kinds of configurations where their atomic arrangements adjust such that either the [100], [111] or [110] zone axes lie parallel to the elongation direction. We have analyzed the relationship between structural rearrangements and electronic transport behavior during the elongation of Au nanowires for each of the three possibilities. We have used two independent experiments to tackle this problem, high resolution transmission high resolution electron microscopy to observe the atomic structure and a mechanically controlled break junction to measure the transport properties. We have estimated the conductance of nanowires using a theoretical method based on the extended Hückel theory that takes into account the atom species and their positions. Aided by these calculations, we have consistently connected both sets of experimental results and modeled the evolution process of gold nanowires whose conductance lies within the first and third conductance quanta. We have also presented evidence that carbon acts as a contaminant, lowering the conductance of one-atom-thick wires.

Quantum Conductance in Silver Nanowires: correlation between atomic structure and transport properties

We have analyzed the atomic arrangements and quantum conductance of silver nanowires generated by mechanical elongation. The surface properties of Ag induce unexpected structural properties, as for example, predominance of high aspect ratio rod-like wires. The structural behavior was used to understand the Ag quantum conductance data and the proposed correlation was confirmed by means of theoretical calculations. These results emphasize that the conductance of metal point contacts is determined by the preferred atomic structures and, that atomistic descriptions are essential to interpret the quantum transport behavior of metal nanostructures.
