Exact spin-orbit qubit manipulation

We consider exactly solvable manipulation of spin-qubits confined in a moving harmonic trap and in the presence of the time dependent Rashba interaction. Non-adiabatic Anandan phase for cyclic time evolution is compared to the Wilczek-Zee adiabatic counterpart. It is shown that the ratio of these two phases can for a chosen system be any real number. Next we demonstrate the possibility of arbitrary qubit transformation in a ring with spin-orbit interaction. Finally, we present an example of exact analysis of spin-orbit dynamics influenced by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck coloured noise.

Exact unitary transformation for Rashba rings in magnetic and electric fields

An exact solution for single electron states on mezoscopic rings with the Rashba coupling and in the presence of external magnetic and electric fields is derived by means of a unitary transformation. The transformation maps the model to a bare ring, which gives the possibility of a very simple formulation of single or many electron problems. As an example some exact results for spin and energy levels are presented.

Arbitrary qubit transformations on tuneable Rashba rings

An exact solution is presented for the time-dependent wavefunction of a Kramers doublet which propagates around a quantum ring with tuneable Rashba spin-orbit interaction. By propagating in segments it is shown that Kramers-doublet qubits may be defined for which transformations on the Bloch sphere may be performed for an integral number of revolutions around the ring. The conditions for full coverage of the Bloch sphere are determined and explained in terms of sequential qubit rotations due to electron motion along the segments, with change of rotation axes between segments due to adiabatic changes in the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Prospects and challenges for possible realizations are discussed for which rings based on InAs quantum wires are promising candidates.

Regular and singular Fermi liquid in triple quantum dots: Coherent transport studies

A system of three coupled quantum dots in a triangular geometry (TQD) with electron-electron interaction and symmetrically coupled to two leads is analyzed with respect to the electron transport by means of the numerical renormalization group. Varying gate potentials this system exhibits extremely rich range of regimes with different many-electron states with various local spin orderings. It is demonstrated how the Luttinger phase changes in a controlled manner which then via the Friedel sum rule formula exactly reproduces the conductance through the TQD system. The analysis of the uncoupled TQD molecule from the leads gives a reliable qualitative understanding of various relevant regimes and gives an insight into the phase diagram with the regular Fermi liquid and singular-Fermi liquid phases.

Exact Nonadiabatic Holonomic Transformations of Spin-Orbit Qubits

An exact analytical solution is derived for the wavefunction of an electron in a one-dimensional moving quantum dot in a nanowire, in the presence of time-dependent spin-orbit coupling. For cyclic evolutions we show that the spin of the electron is rotated by an angle proportional to the area of a closed loop in the parameter space of the time-dependent quantum dot position and the amplitude of a fictitious classical oscillator driven by the time-dependent spin-orbit coupling. By appropriate choice of parameters, we show that arbitrary spin rotations may be performed on the Bloch sphere. Exact expressions for dynamical and geometrical phases are also derived.

Effect of assisted hopping on thermopower in an interacting quantum dot

We investigate the electrical conductance and thermopower of a quantum dot tunnel coupled to external leads described by an extension of the Anderson impurity model which takes into account the assisted hopping processes, i.e., the occupancy-dependence of the tunneling amplitudes. We provide analytical understanding based on scaling arguments and the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, corroborated by detailed numerical calculations using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. The assisted hopping modifies the coupling to the two-particle state, which shifts the Kondo exchange coupling constant and exponentially reduces or enhances the Kondo temperature, breaks the particle-hole symmetry, and strongly affects the thermopower. We discuss the gate-voltage and temperature dependence of the transport properties in various regimes. For a particular value of the assisted hopping parameter we find peculiar discontinuous behaviour in the mixed-valence regime. Near this value, we find very high Seebeck coefficient. We show that, quite generally, the thermopower is a highly sensitive probe of assisted hopping and Kondo correlations.

Thermal entanglement in a triple quantum dot system

We present studies of thermal entanglement of a three-spin system in triangular symmetry. Spin correlations are described within an effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian, derived from the Hubbard Hamiltonian, with super-exchange couplings modulated by an effective electric field. Additionally a homogenous magnetic field is applied to completely break the degeneracy of the system. We show that entanglement is generated in the subspace of doublet states with different pairwise spin correlations for the ground and excited states. At low temperatures thermal mixing between the doublets with the same spin destroys entanglement, however one can observe its restoration at higher temperatures due to the mixing of the states with an opposite spin orientation or with quadruplets (unentangled states) always destroys entanglement. Pairwise entanglement is quantified using concurrence for which analytical formulae are derived in various thermal mixing scenarios. The electric field plays a specific role -- it breaks the symmetry of the system and changes spin correlations. Rotating the electric field can create maximally entangled qubit pairs together with a separate spin (monogamy) that survives in a relatively wide temperature range providing robust pairwise entanglement generation at elevated temperatures.

Entanglement switching via the Kondo effect in triple quantum dots

We consider a triple quantum dot system in a triangular geometry with one of the dots connected to metallic leads. Using Wilson's numerical renormalization group method, we investigate quantum entanglement and its relation to the thermodynamic and transport properties, in the regime where each of the dots is singly occupied on average, but with non-negligible charge fluctuations. It is shown that even in the regime of significant charge fluctuations the formation of the Kondo singlets induces switching between separable and perfectly entangled states. The quantum phase transition between unentangled and entangled states is analyzed quantitatively and the corresponding phase diagram is explained by exactly solvable spin model.

Non-adiabatically driven electron in quantum wire with spin-orbit interaction

An exact solution is derived for the wave function of an electron in a semiconductor quantum wire with spin-orbit interaction and driven by external time dependent harmonic confining potential. The formalism allows analytical expressions for various quantities to be derived, such as spin and pseudo-spin rotations, energy and occupation probabilities for excited states. It is demonstrated how perfect spin and pseudo-spin flips can be achieved at high frequencies of order ω, the confining potential level spacing. By an appropriately chosen driving term, spin manipulation can be exactly performed far into the non-adiabatic regime. Implications for spin-polarised emission and spin-dependent transport are also discussed.

Spin-spin correlations of entangled qubit pairs in the Bohm interpretation of quantum mechanics

A general entangled qubit pair is analyzed in the de Broglie-Bohm formalism corresponding to two spin-1/2 quantum rotors. Several spin-spin correlators of Bohm's hidden variables are analyzed numerically and a detailed comparison with results obtained by standard quantum mechanics is outlined. In addition to various expectation values the Bohm interpretation allows also a study of the corresponding probability distributions, which enables a novel understanding of entangled qubit dynamics. In particular, it is shown how the angular momenta of two qubits in this formalism can be viewed geometrically and characterized by their relative angles. For perfectly entangled pairs, for example, a compelling picture is given, where the qubits exhibit a unison precession making a constant angle between their angular momenta. It is also demonstrated that the properties of standard quantum mechanical spin-spin correlators responsible for the violation of Bell's inequalities are identical to their counterparts emerging from the probability distributions obtained by the Bohmian approach.

Geometrical view of quantum entanglement

Although a precise description of microscopic physical problems requires a full quantum mechanical treatment, physical quantities are generally discussed in terms of classical variables. One exception is quantum entanglement which apparently has no classical counterpart. We demonstrate here how quantum entanglement may be within the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation of quantum mechanics visualized in geometrical terms, giving new insight into this mysterious phenomenon and a language to describe it. On the basis of our analysis of the dynamics of a pair of qubits, quantum entanglement is linked to concurrent motion of angular momenta in the Bohmian space of hidden variables and to the average angle between these momenta.

Geometric analysis of entangled qubit pairs

Two entangled electron spins, or qubits, are analyzed in terms of ordinary three-dimensional space geometric properties, as are the angles between their angular momenta. This formulation allows concurrence, a measure of quantum entanglement, to be expressed as expectation values of trigonometric functions of the azimuthal angle between the two angular momenta.

Electron transport through molecules in the Kondo regime: the role of molecular vibrations

We discuss the electronic transport through molecules in the Kondo regime. We concentrate here on the influence of molecular vibrations. Two types of vibrations are investigated: (i) the breathing internal molecular modes, where the coupling occurs between the molecular deformation and the charge density, and (ii) the oscillations of molecule between the contacts, where the displacement affects the tunneling. The system is described by models which are solved numerically using Schoenhammer-Gunnarsson's projection operators and Wilson's numerical renormalization group methods. Case (i) is considered within the Anderson-Holstein model. Here the influence of the phonons is mainly to suppress the repulsion between the electrons at the molecular orbital. Case (ii) is described by a two-channel Anderson model with phonon-assisted hybridization. In both cases, the coupling to electrons softens the vibrational mode and in the strong coupling regime makes the displacement unstable to perturbations that break the symmetry of the confining potential. For instance, in case (ii) when the frequency of oscillations decreases below the magnitude of perturbation breaking the left-right symmetry, the molecule will be abruptly attracted to one of the electrodes. In this regime, the Kondo temperature increases but the conductance through the molecule is suppressed.

Entanglement of electron pairs extracted from a many-body system

Entanglement of spins is analyzed for two electrons extracted from a mixed many electron state by projecting onto the two-electron subspace. The concurrence formulae are expressed in a compact form for states with a well defined square of the total spin projection. As an example, the thermal entanglement for a qubit pair with an anisotropic Heisenberg and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in an inhomogeneous magnetic field is given analytically. Remarkably, the concurrence of a pair of electrons with antiparallel spins and in a delocalised orbital state is given by the scalar product of the state with its spin-flipped state and not with the time-reversed state.

Kondo effect and channel mixing in oscillating molecules

We investigate the electronic transport through a molecule in the Kondo regime. The tunneling between the electrode and the molecule is asymmetrically modulated by the oscillations of the molecule, i.e., if the molecule gets closer to one of the electrodes the tunneling to that electrode will increase while for the other electrode it will decrease. The system is described by a two-channel Anderson model with phonon-assisted hybridization, which is solved with the Wilson numerical renormalization group method. The results for several functional forms of tunneling modulation are presented. For a linearized modulation the Kondo screening of the molecular spin is caused by the even or odd conduction channel. At the critical value of the electron-phonon coupling an unstable two-channel Kondo fixed point is found. For a realistic modulation the spin at the molecular orbital is Kondo screened by the even conduction channel even in the regime of strong coupling. A universal consequence of the electron-phonon coupling is the softening of the phonon mode and the related instability to perturbations that break the left-right symmetry. When the frequency of oscillations decreases below the magnitude of such perturbation, the molecule is abruptly attracted to one of the electrodes. In this regime, the Kondo temperature is enhanced and, simultaneously, the conductance through the molecule is suppressed.

Quantum entanglement of space domains occupied by interacting electrons

Spin-entanglement of two electrons occupying two spatial regions -- domains -- is expressed in a compact form in terms of spin-spin correlation functions. The power of the formalism is demonstrated on several examples ranging from generation of entanglement by scattering of two electrons to the entanglement of a pair of qubits represented by a double quantum dot coupled to leads. In the latter case the collapse of entanglement due to the Kondo effect is analyzed.

Entanglement and transport anomalies in nanowires

A shallow potential well in a near-perfect quantum wire will bind a single-electron and behave like a quantum dot, giving rise to spin-dependent resonances of propagating electrons due to Coulomb repulsion and Pauli blocking. It is shown how this may be used to generate full entanglement between static and flying spin-qubits near resonance in a two-electron system via singlet or triplet spin-filtering. In a quantum wire with many electrons, the same pairwise scattering may be used to explain conductance, thermopower and shot-noise anomalies, provided the temperature/energy scale is sufficiently high for Kondo-like many-body effects to be negligible.

Thermal entanglement of qubit pairs on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice

We show that temperature and magnetic field properties of the entanglement between spins on the two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland lattice can be qualitatively described by analytical results for a qubit tetramer. Exact diagonalization of clusters with up to 20 sites reveals that the regime of fully entangled neighboring pairs coincides with the regime of finite spin gap in the spectrum. Additionally, the results for the regime of vanishing spin gap are discussed and related to the Heisenberg limit of the model.
