Quark number susceptibilities from HTL-resummed thermodynamics

We compute analytically the diagonal quark number susceptibilities for a quark-gluon plasma at finite temperature and zero chemical potential, and compare with recent lattice results. The calculation uses the approximately self-consistent resummation of hard thermal and dense loops that we have developed previously. For temperatures between 1.5 to 5 $T_c$, our results follow the same trend as the lattice data, but exceed them in magnitude by about 5-10%. We also compute the lowest order contribution, of order $α_s^3\log(1/α_s)$, to the off-diagonal susceptibility. This contribution, which is not a part of our self-consistent calculation, is numerically small, but not small enough to be compatible with a recent lattice simulation.

HTL quasiparticle picture of the thermodynamics of QCD

Starting from a nonperturbative expression for entropy and density obtained from $Φ$-derivable two-loop approximations to the thermodynamic potential, a quasiparticle model for the thermodynamics of QCD can be developed which incorporates the physics of hard thermal loops and leads to a reorganization of the otherwise ill-behaved thermal perturbation theory through order $α_s^{3/2}$. Some details of this reorganization are discussed and the differences to simpler quasiparticle models highlighted. A comparison with available lattice data shows remarkable agreement down to temperatures of $\sim 2.5 T_c$.

The thermodynamics of the quark-gluon plasma: Self-consistent resummations vs. lattice data

We discuss a recent approach for overcoming the poor convergence of the perturbative expansion for the thermodynamic potential of QCD. This approach is based on self-consistent approximations which allow for a gauge-invariant and manifestly ultraviolet-finite resummation of the essential physics of the hard thermal/dense loops. The results thus obtained are in good agreement with available lattice data down to temperatures of about twice the critical temperature. Calculations for a plasma with finite quark density (i.e., with a non-zero chemical potential $μ$) are no more difficult than at $μ=0$.

Approximately self-consistent resummations for the thermodynamics of the quark-gluon plasma. I. Entropy and density

We propose a gauge-invariant and manifestly UV finite resummation of the physics of hard thermal/dense loops (HTL/HDL) in the thermodynamics of the quark-gluon plasma. The starting point is a simple, effectively one-loop expression for the entropy or the quark density which is derived from the fully self-consistent two-loop skeleton approximation to the free energy, but subject to further approximations, whose quality is tested in a scalar toy model. In contrast to the direct HTL/HDL-resummation of the one-loop free energy, in our approach both the leading-order (LO) and the next-to-leading order (NLO) effects of interactions are correctly reproduced and arise from kinematical regimes where the HTL/HDL are justifiable approximations. The LO effects are entirely due to the (asymptotic) thermal masses of the hard particles. The NLO ones receive contributions both from soft excitations, as described by the HTL/HDL propagators, and from corrections to the dispersion relation of the hard excitations, as given by HTL/HDL perturbation theory. The numerical evaluations of our final expressions show very good agreement with lattice data for zero-density QCD, for temperatures above twice the transition temperature.

Self-consistent hard-thermal-loop thermodynamics for the quark-gluon plasma

Self-consistent approximations allowing the calculation of the entropy and the baryon density of a quark-gluon plasma are presented. These approximations incorporate the essential physics of the hard thermal loops, involve only ultraviolet-finite quantities, and are free from overcounting ambiguities. While being nonperturbative in the strong coupling constant $g$, agreement with ordinary perturbation theory is achieved up to and including order $g^3$. It is shown how the pressure can be reconstructed from the entropy and the baryon density taking into account the scale anomaly. The results obtained are in good agreement with available lattice data down to temperatures of about twice the critical temperature.

The entropy of the QCD plasma

Self-consistent approximations in terms of fully dressed propagators provide a simple expression for the entropy of an ultrarelativistic plasma, which isolates the contribution of the elementary excitations as a leading contribution. Further approximations, whose validity is checked on a soluble model involving a scalar field, allow us to calculate the entropy of the QCD plasma. We obtain an accurate description of lattice data for purely gluonic QCD, down to temperatures of about twice the transition temperature.

Reply to ``Proof of the Gauge Independence of the Conformal Anomaly of Bosonic String in the Sense of Kraemmer and Rebhan''

In two recent preprints (hep-th/9710131 and hep-th/9710132), Abe and Nakanishi have claimed that the proof of the gauge independence of the conformal anomaly of the bosonic string as given by us in 1988 was wrong. A similar allegation has been made concerning our proof of the gauge independence of the sum of the ghost number and Lagrange multiplier anomalies in non-conformal gauges. In this short note we refute their criticism by explaining the simple logic of our proofs and emphasizing the points that have been missed by Abe and Nakanishi.

Improved hard-thermal-loop effective actions

Hard thermal loop effective actions furnish the building blocks of resummed thermal perturbation theory, which is expected to work as long as the quantities under consideration are not sensitive to the nonperturbative (chromo-)magnetostatic sector. A different breakdown of perturbation theory occurs whenever external momenta are light-like, because the hard thermal loops themselves develop collinear singularities. By additionally resumming asymptotic thermal masses for hard modes these singularities are removed while leaving the gauge invariance of the effective action intact.

No saturation of the quantum Bogomolnyi bound by two-dimensional supersymmetric solitons

We reanalyse the question whether the quantum Bogomolnyi bound is saturated in the two-dimensional supersymmetric kink and sine-Gordon models. Our starting point is the usual expression for the one-loop correction to the mass of a soliton in terms of sums over zero-point energies. To regulate these sums, most authors put the system in a box with suitable boundary conditions, and impose an ultraviolet cut-off. We distinguish between an energy cut-off and a mode number cut-off, and show that they lead to different results. We claim that only the mode cut-off yields correct results, and only if one considers exactly the same number of bosonic and fermionic modes in the total sum over bound-state and zero-point energies. To substantiate this claim, we show that in the sine-Gordon model only the mode cut-off yields a result for the quantum soliton mass that is consistent with the exact result for the spectrum as obtained by Dashen et al. from quantising the so-called breather solution. In the supersymmetric case, our conclusion is that contrary to previous claims the quantum Bogomolnyi bound is not saturated in any of the two-dimensional models considered.

Eliminating Infrared Divergences in the Pressure

The pressure of a system in thermal equilibrium is expressed as a mass integral over a sum of thermal propagators. This allows a Dyson resummation and is used to demonstrate that potential infrared divergences are rendered harmless.

Hard thermal loops near the light-cone

In hot gauge theories, perturbation theory at the scale of the Debye screening mass requires the resummation of the so-called hard thermal loops, which corresponds to using an effective action obtained by integrating out the modes with momentum of order of the temperature. As is well-known, quantities which are sensitive to the nonperturbative magnetic screening mass still remain incalculable in this resummed perturbation theory. A different breakdown of the latter occurs whenever external momenta are light-like, because the hard thermal loops themselves develop collinear singularities. However, taking into account asymptotic thermal masses for the hard modes regulates the hard thermal loops without spoiling their gauge invariance.

Thermal Green's Functions from Quantum Mechanical Path Integrals

In this paper it is shown how the generating functional for Green's functions in relativistic quantum field theory and in thermal field theory can be evaluated in terms of a standard quantum mechanical path integral. With this calculational approach one avoids the loop-momentum integrals usually encountered in Feynman perturbation theory, although with thermal Green's functions, a discrete sum (over the winding numbers of paths with respect to the circular imaginary time) must be computed. The high-temperature expansion of this sum can be performed for all Green's functions at the same time, and is particularly simple for the static case. The procedure is illustrated by evaluating the two-point function to one-loop order in a $ϕ^3_6$ model.
