Counter-flow instability of a quantum mixture of two superfluids

We study the instability of a mixture of two interacting counter-flowing superfluids. For a homogeneous system, we show that superfluid hydrodynamics leads to the existence of a dynamical instability at a critical value of the relative velocity $v_{cr}$. When the interspecies coupling is small the critical value approaches the value $v_{cr}=c_1+c_2$, given by the sum of the sound velocities of the two uncoupled superfluids, in agreement with the recent prediction of [1] based on Landau's argument. The crucial dependence of the critical velocity on the interspecies coupling is explicitly discussed. Our results agree with previous predictions for weakly interacting Bose-Bose mixtures and applies to Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures as well. Results for the stability of transversally trapped mixtures are also presented.

Instability of the superfluid flow as black-hole lasing effect

We show that the instability leading to the decay of the one-dimensional superfluid flow through a penetrable barrier are due to the black-hole lasing effect. This dynamical instability is triggered by modes resonating in an effective cavity formed by two horizons enclosing the barrier. The location of the horizons is set by $v(x)=c(x)$, with $v(x),c(x)$ being the local fluid velocity and sound speed, respectively. We compute the critical velocity analytically and show that it is univocally determined by the horizons configuration. In the limit of broad barriers, the continuous spectrum at the origin of the Hawking-like radiation and of the Landau energetic instability is recovered.

Persistent currents in two-component condensates in a toroidal trap

The stability of persistent currents in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a toroidal trap is studied both in the miscible and immiscible regimes. In the miscible regime we show that superflow decay is related to linear instabilities of the spin-density Bogoliubov mode. We find a region of partial stability, where the flow is stable in the majority component while it decays in the minority component. We also characterize the dynamical instability appearing for a large relative velocity between the two components. In the immiscible regime the stability criterion is modified and depends on the specific density distribution of the two components. The effect of a coherent coupling between the two components is also discussed.

Dipolar-Induced Resonance for Ultracold Bosons in a Quasi-1D Optical Lattice

We study the role of the Dipolar-Induced Resonance (DIR) in a quasi-one-dimensional system of ultracold bosons. We first describe the effect of the DIR on two particles in a harmonic trap. Then, we consider a deep optical lattice loaded with ultracold dipolar bosons. In order to describe this system, we introduce a novel atom-dimer extended Bose-Hubbard model, which is the minimal model correctly accounting for the DIR. We analyze the impact of the DIR on the phase diagram at T=0 by exact diagonalization of a small-sized system. We show that the DIR strongly affects this phase diagram. In particular, we predict the mass density wave to occur in a narrow domain corresponding to weak nearest-neighbor interactions, and the occurrence of a collapse phase for stronger dipolar interactions.

A study of coherently coupled two-component Bose-Einstein Condensates

We present a self-consistent study of coherently coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Finite spin-flipping coupling changes the first order demixing phase transition for Bose-Bose mixtures to a second order phase transition between an unpolarized and a polarized state. We analise the excitation spectrum and the structure factor along the transition for a homogeneous system. We discuss the main differences at the transition between a coherent coupled gas and a two-component mixture. We finally study the ground state when spin-(in)dependent trapping potentials are added to the system, focusing on optical lattices, which give rise to interesting new configurations.

Understanding Hawking radiation from simple models of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

This chapter is an introduction to the Bogoliubov theory of dilute Bose condensates as applied to the study of the spontaneous emission of phonons in a stationary condensate flowing at supersonic speeds. This emission process is a condensed-matter analog of Hawking radiation from astrophysical black holes but is derived here from a microscopic quantum theory of the condensate without any use of the analogy with gravitational systems. To facilitate physical understanding of the basic concepts, a simple one-dimensional geometry with a stepwise homogenous flow is considered which allows for a fully analytical treatment.

Quantum fluctuations around black hole horizons in Bose-Einstein condensates

We study several realistic configurations allowing to realize an acoustic horizon in the flow of a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. In each case we give an analytical description of the flow pattern, of the spectrum of Hawking radiation and of the associated quantum fluctuations. Our calculations confirm that the non local correlations of the density fluctuations previously studied in a simplified model provide a clear signature of Hawking radiation also in realistic configurations. In addition we explain by direct computation how this non local signal relates to short range modifications of the density correlations.

Local atom-number fluctuations in quantum gases at finite temperature

We investigate the number fluctuations in small cells of quantum gases pointing out important deviations from the thermodynamic limit fixed by the isothermal compressibility. Both quantum and thermal fluctuations in weakly as well as highly compressible fluids are considered. For the two-dimensional (2D) superfluid Bose gas we find a significant quenching of fluctuations with respect to the thermodynamic limit, in agreement with recent experimental findings. An enhancement of the thermal fluctuations is instead predicted for the 2D dipolar superfluid Bose gas, which becomes dramatic when the size of the sample cell is of the order of the wavelength of the rotonic excitation induced by the interaction.

Non-local state-swapping of polar molecules in bilayers

The observation of significant dipolar effects in gases of ultra-cold polar molecules typically demands a strong external electric field to polarize the molecules. We show that even in the absence of a significant polarization, dipolar effects may play a crucial role in the physics of polar molecules in bilayers, provided that the molecules in each layer are initially prepared in a different rotational state. Then, inter-layer dipolar interactions result in a non-local swap of the rotational state between molecules in different layers, even for weak applied electric fields. The inter-layer scattering due to the dipole-dipole interaction leads to a non-trivial dependence of the swapping rate on density, temperature, inter-layer spacing, and population imbalance. For reactive molecules like KRb, chemical recombination immediately follows a non-local swap and dominates the losses even for temperatures well above quantum degeneracy, and could be hence observed under current experimental conditions.

Dipolar Drag in Bilayer Harmonically Trapped Gases

We consider two separated pancake-shaped trapped gases interacting with a dipolar (either magnetic or electric) force. We study how the center of mass motion propagates from one cloud to the other as a consequence of the long-range nature of the interaction. The corresponding dynamics is fixed by the frequency difference between the in-phase and the out-of-phase center of mass modes of the two clouds, whose dependence on the dipolar interaction strength and the cloud separation is explicitly investigated. We discuss Fermi gases in the degenerate as well as in the classical limit and comment on the case of Bose-Einsten condensed gases.

Testing Hawking particle creation by black holes through correlation measurements

Hawking's prediction of thermal radiation by black holes has been shown by Unruh to be expected also in condensed matter systems. We show here that in a black hole-like configuration realised in a BEC this particle creation does indeed take place and can be unambiguously identified via a characteristic pattern in the density-density correlations. This opens the concrete possibility of the experimental verification of this effect.

Collective decoherence of cold atoms coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate

We examine the time evolution of cold atoms (impurities) interacting with an environment consisting of a degenerate bosonic quantum gas. The impurity atoms differ from the environment atoms, being of a different species. This allows one to superimpose two independent trapping potentials, each being effective only on one atomic kind, while transparent to the other. When the environment is homogeneous and the impurities are confined in a potential consisting of a set of double wells, the system can be described in terms of an effective spin-boson model, where the occupation of the left or right well of each site represents the two (pseudo)-spin states. The irreversible dynamics of such system is here studied exactly, i.e., not in terms of a Markovian master equation. The dynamics of one and two impurities is remarkably different in respect of the standard decoherence of the spin - boson system. In particular we show: i) the appearance of coherence oscillations, i) the presence of super and sub decoherent states which differ from the standard ones of the spin boson model, and iii) the persistence of coherence in the system at long times. We show that this behaviour is due to the fact that the pseudospins have an internal spatial structure. We argue that collective decoherence also prompts information about the correlation length of the environment. In a one dimensional configuration one can change even stronger the qualitative behaviour of the dephasing just by tuning the interaction of the bath.

Bogoliubov Theory of acoustic Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We apply the microscopic Bogoliubov theory of dilute Bose-Einstein condensates to analyze quantum and thermal fluctuations in a flowing atomic condensate in the presence of a sonic horizon. For the simplest case of a step-like horizon, closed-form analytical expressions are found for the spectral distribution of the analog Hawking radiation and for the density correlation function. The peculiar long-distance density correlations that appear as a consequence of the Hawking emission features turns out to be reinforced by a finite initial temperature of the condensate. The analytical results are in good quantitative agreement with first principle numerical calculations.

Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit and phase separation in Fermi mixtures at Unitarity

Using many-body results available from diagrammatic and {\it ab initio} Monte Carlo calculations we analyze the phase diagram $μ=(μ_{\uparrow}+μ_{\downarrow})/2$ versus $h=(μ_{\uparrow}-μ_{\downarrow})/2$ of a unitary Fermi gas at zero temperature with population imbalance and unequal masses. We identify different regions where the gas is superfluid, partially polarized or fully polarized and determine the corresponding coexistence conditions. The asymmetry in the phase diagram, caused by the mass imbalance, and its effect on the Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit for the critical polarization are explicitly discussed. The equation of state of the superfluid and normal phases is employed, within the local density approximation, to predict novel phase separated configurations in the presence of harmonic trapping potentials.

Unitary polarized Fermi gas under adiabatic rotation

We discuss the effect of an adiabatic rotation on the phase separation between the superfluid and normal component of a trapped polarized Fermi gas at unitarity and zero temperature, under the assumption that quantized vortices are not formed. We show that the Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit $n_{\downarrow}/\n_{\uparrow}$ characterizing the local polarization in the normal phase at the interface is enhanced by the rotation as a consequence of the centrifugal effect. The density profiles (local and column integral) of the two spin species are calculated as a function of the angular velocity for different values of the polarization. The critical value of the angular velocity at which the superfluid exhibits a spontaneous quadrupole deformation is also calculated for the unpolarized case.

The role of interactions in spin-polarised atomic Fermi gases at unitarity

We study the zero temperature properties of a trapped polarized Fermi gas at unitarity by assuming phase separation between an unpolarized superfluid and a polarized normal phase. The effects of the interaction are accounted using the formalism of quasi-particles to build up the equation of state of the normal phase with the Monte Carlo results for the relevant parameters. Our predictions for the Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit of critical polarization and for the density profiles, including the density jump at the interface, are confirmed with excellent accuracy by the recent experimental results at MIT. The role of interaction on the radial width of the minority component, on the gap of the RF transition and on the spin oscillations in the normal phase is also discussed. Our analysis points out the Fermi liquid nature of these strongly interacting spin polarized configurations.

Collisional Properties of a Polarized Fermi Gas with Resonant Interactions

Highly polarized mixtures of atomic Fermi gases constitute a novel Fermi liquid. We demonstrate how information on thermodynamic properties may be used to calculate quasiparticle scattering amplitudes even when the interaction is resonant and apply the results to evaluate the damping of the spin dipole mode. We estimate that under current experimental conditions, the mode would be intermediate between the hydrodynamic and collisionless limits.

Destroying superfluidity by rotating a Fermi gas at unitarity

We study the effect of the rotation on a harmonically trapped Fermi gas at zero temperature under the assumption that vortices are not formed. We show that at unitarity the rotation produces a phase separation between a non rotating superfluid (S) core and a rigidly rotating normal (N) gas. The interface between the two phases is characterized by a density discontinuity $n_{\rm N}/n_{\rm S}= 0.85$, independent of the angular velocity. The depletion of the superfluid and the angular momentum of the rotating configuration are calculated as a function of the angular velocity. The conditions of stability are also discussed and the critical angular velocity for the onset of a spontaneous quadrupole deformation of the interface is evaluated.
