Constraints on dark energy evolution

We investigate a class of dark energy models in which the equation of state undergoes a rapid transition and for which the Hubble SN Ia diagram is known to be poorly discriminant. Interestingly enough, we find that transitions at high redshift can lead to distortion in the correlation function of dark matter at lower redshift. We therefore use a combination of the SN Ia Hubble diagram, Cosmic Microwave Background data and power spectrum from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Luminous Red Galaxies (SDSS LRG) to constrain the redshift of a possible transition. We find that the fundamental cosmological parameters are well constrained independently of the presence of a transition. Acceptable transitions from an equation of state close to $w = 0$ to a value close to -1 are strongly rejected at redshifts much higher than those for which Large Scale Structure and SN Ia data are available: the transition redshift can be rejected up to a value as high as 10. We conclude that no preference for a transition appears from present-day data.

The study of topology of the universe using multipole vectors

We study a multipole vector-based decomposition of cosmic microwave background (CMB) data in order to search for signatures of a multiconnected topology of the universe. Using 10^6 simulated maps, we analyse the multipole vector distribution on the sky for the lowest order multipoles together with the probability distribution function of statistics based on the sum of the dot products of the multipole vectors for both the simply-connected flat universe and universes with the topology of a 3-torus. The estimated probabilities of obtaining lower values for these statistics as compared to the 5-year WMAP data indicate that the observed alignment of the quadrupole and octopole is statistically favoured in a 3-torus topology where at least one dimension of the fundamental domain is significantly shorter than the diameter of the observable universe, as compared to the usual standard simply-connected universe. However, none of the obtained results are able to clearly rule out the latter (at more than 97% confidence level). Multipole vector statistics do not appear to be very sensitive to the signatures of a 3-torus topology if the shorter dimension of the domain becomes comparable to the diameter of the observable universe. Unfortunately, the signatures are also significantly diluted by the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect.

A new analysis of Poincaré dodecahedral space model

The full three-year WMAP results (WMAP3) reinforce the absence of large-angle correlations at scales greater than 60 degrees. The Poincare dodecahedral space (PDS) model model, which may naturally explain such features, thus remains a plausible cosmological model, despite recent controversy about whether matched circle searches would or would not push the topology beyond the horizon. Here, we have used new eigenmode calculations of the dodecahedral space to predict the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature fluctuations in such models, with an improved angular resolution. We have simulated CMB maps and confirmed the expected presence of matching circles. For a set of plausible cosmological parameters, we have derived the angular power spectrum of the CMB up to large wavenumbers. Comparison with the WMAP3 observations confirms a remarkable fit with a PDS model, for a value $Ω_0 = 1.018$ of the average total energy density.

On the detectability of non-trivial topologies

We explore the main physical processes which potentially affect the topological signal in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) for a range of toroidal universes. We consider specifically reionisation, the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, the size of the causal horizon, topological defects and primordial gravitational waves. We use three estimators: the information content, the S/N statistic and the Bayesian evidence. While reionisation has nearly no effect on the estimators, we show that taking into account the ISW strongly decreases our ability to detect the topological signal. We also study the impact of varying the relevant cosmological parameters within the 2 sigma ranges allowed by present data. We find that only Omega_Lambda, which influences both ISW and the size of the causal horizon, significantly alters the detection for all three estimators considered here.

Constraining topology in harmonic space

We consider several ways to test for topology directly in harmonic space by comparing the measured a_lm with the expected correlation matrices. Two tests are of a frequentist nature while we compute the Bayesian evidence as the third test. Using correlation matrices for cubic and slab-space tori, we study how these tests behave as a function of the minimal scale probed and as a function of the size of the universe. We also apply them to different first-year WMAP CMB maps and confirm that the universe is compatible with being infinitely big for the cases considered. We argue that there is an information theoretical limit (given by the Kullback-Leibler divergence) on the size of the topologies that can be detected.

Dodecahedral space topology as an explanation for weak wide-angle temperature correlations in the cosmic microwave background

Cosmology's standard model posits an infinite flat universe forever expanding under the pressure of dark energy. First-year data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) confirm this model to spectacular precision on all but the largest scales (Bennett {\it et al.}, 2003 ; Spergel {\it et al.}, 2003). Temperature correlations across the microwave sky match expectations on scales narrower than $60^{\circ}$, yet vanish on scales wider than $60^{\circ}$. Researchers are now seeking an explanation of the missing wide-angle correlations (Contaldi {\it et al.}, 2003 ; Cline {\it et al.}, 2003). One natural approach questions the underlying geometry of space, namely its curvature (Efstathiou, 2003) and its topology (Tegmark {\it et al.}, 2003). In an infinite flat space, waves from the big bang would fill the universe on all length scales. The observed lack of temperature correlations on scales beyond $60^{\circ}$ means the broadest waves are missing, perhaps because space itself is not big enough to support them. Here we present a simple geometrical model of a finite, positively curved space -- the Poincaré dodecahedral space -- which accounts for WMAP's observations with no fine-tuning required. Circle searching (Cornish, Spergel and Starkman, 1998) may confirm the model's topological predictions, while upcoming Planck Surveyor data may confirm its predicted density of $Ω_0 \simeq 1.013 > 1$. If confirmed, the model will answer the ancient question of whether space is finite or infinite, while retaining the standard Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre foundation for local physics.

Bounds on isocurvature perturbations from CMB and LSS data

We obtain very stringent bounds on the possible cold dark matter, baryon and neutrino isocurvature contributions to the primordial fluctuations in the Universe, using recent cosmic microwave background and large scale structure data. In particular, we include the measured temperature and polarization power spectra from WMAP and ACBAR, as well as the matter power spectrum from the 2dF galaxy redshift survey. Neglecting the possible effects of spatial curvature, tensor perturbations and reionization, we perform a Bayesian likelihood analysis with nine free parameters, and find that the amplitude of the isocurvature component cannot be larger than about 31% for the cold dark matter mode, 91% for the baryon mode, 76% for the neutrino density mode, and 60% for the neutrino velocity mode, at 2-sigma, for uncorrelated models. On the other hand, for correlated adiabatic and isocurvature components, the fraction could be slightly larger. However, the cross-correlation coefficient is strongly constrained, and maximally correlated/anticorrelated models are disfavored. This puts strong bounds on the curvaton model, independently of the bounds on non-Gaussianity.

Cosmological constraints in Lambda-CDM and Quintessence paradigms with Archeops

We review the cosmological constraints put by the current CMB experiment including the recent ARCHEOPS data, in the framework of Lambda-CDM and quintessence paradigm. We show that well chosen combinations of constraints from different cosmological observations lead to precise measurements of cosmological parameters. The Universe seems flat with a 70 percents contribution of dark energy with an equation of state very close to those of the vacuum.

The cosmological constant and general isocurvature initial conditions

We investigate in detail the question whether a non-vanishing cosmological constant is required by present-day cosmic microwave background and large scale structure data when general isocurvature initial conditions are allowed for. We also discuss differences between the usual Bayesian and the frequentist approaches in data analysis. We show that the COBE-normalized matter power spectrum is dominated by the adiabatic mode and therefore breaks the degeneracy between initial conditions which is present in the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. We find that in a flat universe the Bayesian analysis requires Ω_Λ\neq 0 to more than 3 σ, while in the frequentist approach Ω_Λ= 0 is still within 3 σfor a value of h < 0.48. Both conclusions hold regardless of initial conditions.

Cosmological parameters estimation in the Quintessence Paradigm

We present cosmological parameter constraints on flat cosmologies dominated by dark energy using various cosmological data including the recent Archeops angular power spectrum measurements. A likelihood analysis of the existing Cosmic Microwave Background data shows that the presence of dark energy is not requested, in the absence of further prior. This comes from the fact that there exist degeneracies among the various cosmological parameters constrained by the Cosmic Microwave Background. We found that there is a degeneracy in a combination of the Hubble parameter H_0 and of the dark energy equation of state parameter w_Q, but that w_Q is not correlated with the primordial index n of scalar fluctuations and the baryon content Omega_b h^2. Preferred primordial index is n = 0.95 \pm 0.05 (68%) and baryon content Omega_b h^2 = 0.021 \pm 0.003. Adding constraint on the amplitude of matter fluctuations on small scales, sigma_8, obtained from clusters abundance or weak lensing data may allow to break the degenaracies, although present-day systematics uncertainties do not allow firm conclusions yet. The further addition of the Hubble Space Telescope measurements of the local distance scale and of the high redshift supernovae data allows to obtain tight constraints. When these constraints are combined together we find that the amount of dark energy is 0.7^{+0.10}_{-0.07} (95% C.L.) and that its equation of state is very close to those of the vacuum: w_Q < -0.75 (> 95% C.L.). In no case do we find that quintessence is prefered over the classical cosmological constant, although robust data on sigma_8 might rapidly bring light on this important issue.

Evidence against or for topological defects in the BOOMERanG data ?

The recently released BOOMERanG data was taken as ``contradicting topological defect predictions''. We show that such a statement is partly misleading. Indeed, the presence of a series of acoustic peaks is perfectly compatible with a non-negligible topological defects contribution. In such a mixed perturbation model (inflation and topological defects) for the source of primordial fluctuations, the natural prediction is a slightly lower amplitude for the Doppler peaks, a feature shared by many other purely inflationary models. Thus, for the moment, it seems difficult to rule out these models with the current data.

Reproducing Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies with mixed isocurvature perturbations

Recently high quality data of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies have been published. In this work we study to which extent the cosmological parameters determined by using this data depend on assumptions about the initial conditions. We show that for generic initial conditions, not only the best fit values are very different but, and this is our main result, the allowed parameter range enlarges dramatically.
