Rabi Oscillations at Exceptional Points in Microwave Billiards

We experimentally investigated the decay behavior with time t of resonances near and at exceptional points, where two complex eigenvalues and also the associated eigenfunctions coalesce. The measurements were performed with a dissipative microwave billiard, whose shape depends on two parameters. The t^2-dependence predicted at the exceptional point on the basis of a two-state matrix model could be verified. Outside the exceptional point the predicted Rabi oscillations, also called quantum echoes in this context, were detected. To our knowledge this is the first time that quantum echoes related to exceptional points were observed experimentally.

The use of satellite and ground based measurements for estimating and reducing uncertainties in the spatial distribution of emissions of nitrogen oxides

We explore possibilities of improving the spatial structure of NOx emissions employed in a continental scale chemistry transport model (CTM) by using satellite measurements of nitrogen dioxide and ground-based observations of near surface ozone. In this study, we combine the tropospheric NO2 columns derived from SCIAMACHY measurements, the data from the EMEP ozone-monitoring network and the calculations performed with the CHIMERE CTM in the framework of an advanced inverse modelling scheme. All data used in the study correspond to the period of June-August 2003. The main distinctive feature of our inversion scheme is that, in contrast to more common inverse modelling approaches, the magnitudes of uncertainties in the input data are not explicitly predefined but rather estimated consistently with the a posteriori emissions as a result of the inversion. While the tropospheric NO2 columns are used for fitting the spatial distribution of the emission parameters of the model, the ozone observations are only used to estimate the averaged levels of uncertainties in a priori emissions. We use our method in order to estimate and to reduce uncertainties in the gridded (with the resolution of 1 degree) NOx emission data for Europe, Middle East and Northern Africa. It is found that the a priori emission estimates used in the standard version of CHIMERE are probably biased in several regions. On average, the uncertainties in total NOx emissions are estimated to be about 1.7 in terms of the geometric standard deviation in Europe and about 2.1 outside of Europe. The corrected emission estimates provide better agreement of the modelled results with observations for both NO2 columns and near surface concentrations of ozone.

First Experimental Observation of Superscars in a Pseudointegrable Barrier Billiard

With a perturbation body technique intensity distributions of the electric field strength in a flat microwave billiard with a barrier inside up to mode numbers as large as about 700 were measured. A method for the reconstruction of the amplitudes and phases of the electric field strength from those intensity distributions has been developed. Recently predicted superscars have been identified experimentally and - using the well known analogy between the electric field strength and the quantum mechanical wave function in a two-dimensional microwave billiard - their properties determined.

Nonperiodic echoes from mushroom billiard hats

Mushroom billiards have the remarkable property to show one or more clear cut integrable islands in one or several chaotic seas, without any fractal boundaries. The islands correspond to orbits confined to the hats of the mushrooms, which they share with the chaotic orbits. It is thus interesting to ask how long a chaotic orbit will remain in the hat before returning to the stem. This question is equivalent to the inquiry about delay times for scattering from the hat of the mushroom into an opening where the stem should be. For fixed angular momentum we find that no more than three different delay times are possible. This induces striking nonperiodic structures in the delay times that may be of importance for mesoscopic devices and should be accessible to microwave experiments.

Magnetic dipole probes of the sd and pf shell crossing in the A=36,38 argon isotopes

We have calculated the M1 strength distributions in the A=36,38 argon isotopes within large-scale shell model studies which consider valence nucleons in the sd and pf shells. While the M1 strength in 36Ar is well reproduced within the sd shell, the experimentally observed strong fragmentation of the M1 strength in 38Ar requires configuration mixing between the sd and the pf shells adding to our understanding of correlations across the N=20 shell gap.

Strength distributions and symmetry breaking in coupled microwave billiards

Flat microwave cavities can be used to experimentally simulate quantum mechanical systems. By coupling two such cavities, we study the equivalent to the symmetry breaking in quantum mechanics. As the coupling is tunable, we can measure resonance strength distributions as a function of the symmetry breaking. We analyze the data employing a qualitative model based on Random Matrix Theory (RMT) and show that the results derived from the strength distribution are consistent with those previously obtained from spectral statistics.

Spectral statistics in an open parametric billiard system

We present experimental results on the eigenfrequency statistics of a superconducting, chaotic microwave billiard containing a rotatable obstacle. Deviations of the spectral fluctuations from predictions based on Gaussian orthogonal ensembles of random matrices are found. They are explained by treating the billiard as an open scattering system in which microwave power is coupled in and out via antennas. To study the interaction of the quantum (or wave) system with its environment a highly sensitive parametric correlator is used.

Shell-model test of the rotational-model relation between static quadrupole moments Q(2^+_1), B(E2)'s, and orbital M1 transitions

In this work, we examine critically the relation between orbital magnetic dipole (scissors mode) strength and quadrupole deformation properties. Assuming a simple K=0 ground state band in an even-even nucleus, the quantities Q(2^+_1) (i.e., the static quadrupole moment) and B(E2)_{0_1 \to 2_1} both are described by a single parameter--the intrinsic quadrupole moment Q_0. In the shell model, we can operationally define Q_0(Static) and Q_0(BE2) and see if they are the same. Following a brief excursion to the sd shell, we perform calculations in the fp shell. The nuclei we consider ({44,46,48}Ti and {48,50}Cr) are far from being perfect rotors, but we find that the calculated ratio Q_0(Static)/Q_0(BE2) is in many cases surprisingly close to one. We also discuss the collectivity of orbital magnetic dipole transitions. We find that the large orbital B(M1) strength in {44}Ti relative to {46}Ti and {48}Ti cannot be explained by simple deformation arguments.

Supernova Inelastic Neutrino-Nucleus Cross Sections from High-Resolution Electron Scattering Experiments and Shell-Model Calculations

Highly precise data on the magnetic dipole strength distributions from the Darmstadt electron linear accelerator for the nuclei 50Ti, 52Cr and 54Fe are dominated by isovector Gamow-Teller-like contributions and can therefore be translated into inelastic total and differential neutral-current neutrino-nucleus cross sections at supernova neutrino energies. The results agree well with large-scale shell-model calculations, validating this model.

First experimental evidence for quantum echoes in scattering systems

A self-pulsing effect termed quantum echoes has been observed in experiments with an open superconducting and a normal conducting microwave billiard whose geometry provides soft chaos, i.e. a mixed phase space portrait with a large stable island. For such systems a periodic response to an incoming pulse has been predicted. Its period has been associated to the degree of development of a horseshoe describing the topology of the classical dynamics. The experiments confirm this picture and reveal the topological information.

Measurement of Rlt and Atl in the 4He(e,e'p)3H Reaction at pmiss of 130-300 MeV/c

We have measured the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at missing momenta of 130-300 MeV/c using the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI. Data were taken in perpendicular kinematics to allow us to determine the response function Rlt and the asymmetry term Atl. The data are compared to both relativistic and non-relativistic calculations.

Encircling an Exceptional Point

We calculate analytically the geometric phases that the eigenvectors of a parametric dissipative two-state system described by a complex symmetric Hamiltonian pick up when an exceptional point (EP) is encircled. An EP is a parameter setting where the two eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian coalesce. We show that it can be encircled on a path along which the eigenvectors remain approximately real and discuss a microwave cavity experiment, where such an encircling of an EP was realized. Since the wavefunctions remain approximately real, they could be reconstructed from the nodal lines of the recorded spatial intensity distributions of the electric fields inside the resonator. We measured the geometric phases that occur when an EP is encircled four times and thus confirmed that for our system an EP is a branch point of fourth order.

First Results on In-Beam gamma Spectroscopy of Neutron-Rich Na and Mg Isotopes at REX-ISOLDE

After the successful commissioning of the radioactive beam experiment at ISOLDE (REX-ISOLDE) - an accelerator for exotic nuclei produced by ISOLDE - first physics experiments using these beams were performed. Initial experiments focused on the region of deformation in the vicinity of the neutron-rich Na and Mg isotopes. Preliminary results show the high potential and physics opportunities offered by the exotic isotope accelerator REX in conjunction with the modern Germanium gamma spectrometer MINIBALL.

Coherent current transport in wide ballistic Josephson junctions

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of coherent current transport in wide ballistic superconductor-two dimensional electron gas-superconductor junctions. It is found experimentally that upon increasing the junction length, the subharmonic gap structure in the current-voltage characteristics is shifted to lower voltages, and the excess current at voltages much larger than the superconducting gap decreases. Applying a theory of coherent multiple Andreev reflection, we show that these observations can be explained in terms of transport through Andreev resonances.

Comment on ''Exceptional points and double poles of the S matrix''

In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. E 67, 026204 (2003)], Rotter calculates the geometric phases that are picked up by the eigenvectors of a two-state quantum system when an exceptional point is encircled. In addition to the geometric phases observed by Dembowski et al. in a microwave cavity experiment [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 787 (2001)], she finds a phase factor of i. We show that Rotters results are inconsistent.

R-matrix theory of driven electromagnetic cavities

Resonances of cylindrical symmetric microwave cavities are analyzed in R-matrix theory which transforms the input channel conditions to the output channels. Single and interfering double resonances are studied and compared with experimental results, obtained with superconducting microwave cavities. Because of the equivalence of the two-dimensional Helmholtz and the stationary Schroedinger equations, the results present insight into the resonance structure of regular and chaotic quantum billiards.

Search for Narrow Nucleon Resonances below Pion Threshold in the H(e,e'pi^+)X and D(e,e'p)X Reactions

In two series of high-resolution coincidence experiments at the three-spectrometer facility at MAMI, the H(e,e'pi^+)X and D(e,e'p)X reactions were studied to search for narrow nucleon resonances below pion threshold. The missing-mass resolution was 0.6 to 1.6 MeV/c^2 (FWHM) in the proton experiment and 0.9 to 1.3 MeV/c^2 in the deuteron experiment. The experiments covered the missing-mass region from the neutron mass up to about 1050 and 1100 MeV/c^2, respectively. None of our measurements showed a signal for narrow resonances to a level of down to 10^-4 with respect to the neutron peak in the missing-mass spectra.

Observation of a Chiral State in a Microwave Cavity

A microwave experiment has been realized to measure the phase difference of the oscillating electric field at two points inside the cavity. The technique has been applied to a dissipative resonator which exhibits a singularity -- called exceptional point -- in its eigenvalue and eigenvector spectrum. At the singularity, two modes coalesce with a phase difference of $π/2 .$ We conclude that the state excited at the singularity has a definitiv chirality.
