Gauge-Mediated Curvature of the Flat Directions During Preheating

Usually one expectes the inflaton field to be coupled to some gauge-charged particles allowing for its decay during reheating. Such particles then play a role of the messengers for the gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking during and (shortly) after the inflation and radiatively induce soft masses to all other $D$-flat directions. We show that during the preheating stage this gauge-mediated soft masses are typically much greater than the Hubble parameter during inflation. The dramatic role is played by the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking due to the parametric resonance effect, which ensures that the inflaton predominantly decays into the bosons and not the fermions. Difference in the Fermi-Bose occupation numbers results in the large gauge-mediated soft masses, which determine the post-inflationary evolution of the flat directions, suggesting that nonthermal phase transitions mediated by gauge messengers may play a crucial role in the Affelck-Dine mechanism for the generation of the baryon asymmetry.

Non-equilibrium symmetry restoration beyond one loop

We calculate the strength of symmetry restoration effects in highly non-equilibrium states which can arise, for example, during preheating after inflation. We show that in certain parameter range the one-loop results are unstable, requiring summation of multiloop diagrams. We solve this problem for the $O(N)$ model in the large $N$-limit and show that the symmetry restoration may be less effective than what predicted by the one-loop estimate.

Vacuum decay along supersymmetric flat directions

It has been recently realized that within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, for certain patterns of superpartner masses, consistent with all the present experimental constraints, the scalar potential may develop at some scale $Q_0$ unbounded color/charge breaking directions involving the sfermion fields, and that these patterns are then excluded unless some new physics is invoked at or below the scale $Q_0$. We reanalyze this observation and point out that such patterns of superpartner masses at the weak scale are {\it not} ruled out when taking into account the probability of decay for the metastable color conserving minimum along these color breaking unbounded directions. It turns out that the color conserving minimum, although metastable, has a lifetime longer than the present age of the Universe and can survive both quantum tunneling and the effects of high temperatures in the early Universe, causing the color/charge breaking effects to be in practice not dangerous.

On the Nonequilibrium Effective Potential

Nonequilibrium phenomena of the phase transitions are studied. It is shown that due to finite relaxation time of the particle distributions, the use of scalar background dependent distribution functions is inconsistent. This observation may change the picture of rapid processes during the electroweak phase transition, like subcritical bubble formation and propagation of bubble walls.

A Stochastic Approach to Thermal Fluctuations during a First Order Electroweak Phase Transition

We investigate the role played by subcritical bubbles at the onset of the electroweak phase transition. Treating the configuration modelling the thermal fluctuations around the homogeneous zero configuration of the Higgs field as a stochastic variable, we describe its dynamics by a phenomenological Langevin equation. This approach allows to properly take into account both the effects of the thermal bath on the system: a systematic dyssipative force, which tends to erase out any initial subcritical configuration, and a random stochastic force responsible for the fluctuations. We show that the contribution to the variance $\lghϕ^2(t)\rg_V$ in a given volume $V$ from any initial subcritical configuration is quickly damped away and that, in the limit of long times, $\lghϕ^2(t)\rg_V$ approaches its equilibrium value provided by the stochastic force and independent from the viscosity coefficient, as predicted by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. In agreement with some recent claims, we conclude that thermal fluctuations do not affect the nucleation of critical bubbles at the onset of the electroweak phase transition making electroweak baryogenesis scenarios still a viable possibility to explain the primordial baryon asymmetry in the Universe.

Particle Currents in a Space-Time dependent and CP-violating Higgs Background: a Field Theory Approach

Motivated by cosmological applications like electroweak baryogenesis, we develop a field theoretic approach to the computation of particle currents on a space-time dependent and CP-violating Higgs background. We consider the Standard Model model with two Higgs doublets and CP violation in the scalar sector, and compute both fermionic and Higgs currents by means of an expansion in the background fields. We discuss the gauge dependence of the results and the renormalization of the current operators, showing that in the limit of local equilibrium, no extra renormalization conditions are needed in order to specify the system completely.

Do subcritical bubbles hinder first order phase transition?

We consider the role played by subcritical bubbles during the electroweak phase transition, estimate their average size, amplitude and formation rate taking into account the crucial role played by thermalization. We also study the influence of subcritical bubbles on the formation of critical bubbles in the thin wall regime and show that, contrary to some recent claims, subcritical bubbles do not affect the nucleation of critical bubbles in an appreciable way. From this fact we conclude that the electroweak baryogenesis scenarios associated with a first order electroweak phase transition still remain an attractive possibility.

Particle Currents on a CP Violating Higgs Background and the Spontaneous Baryogenesis Mechanism

We compute the particle currents induced on a bubble wall background at finite temperature in a model with CP violation in the Higgs sector. Using a field theory approach we show that fermionic currents arise at one loop, so that a suppression factor ${\cal O}(h_t ϕ/πT)^2$ with respect to previous computations is found. The contributions to the Higgs currents are also derived and their relevancy for the spontaneous baryogenesis mechanism is discussed.

Implications of a light stop for the spontaneous CP breaking at finite temperature in a nonminimal supersymmetric standard model

We study the implications of a light stop for the spontaneous CP breaking at finite temperature in the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with a gauge singlet. Assuming CP conservation at zero temperature, we show that the presence of a large mixing between the left- and the right-handed stops can trigger easily the spontaneous breaking of CP inside the bubbles nucleated during the electroweak phase transition. This allows to avoid the fine-tuning among the vacuum expectation values in the region of interest for the generation of the baryon asymmetry, namely the bubble walls, which has been recently analized.

The Lightest Higgs Boson Mass in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

We compute the upper bound on the mass of the lightest Higgs boson in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in a model-independent way, including leading (one-loop) and next-to-leading order (two-loop) radiative corrections. We find that (contrary to some recent claims) the two-loop corrections are negative with respect to the one-loop result and relatively small ($\simlt 3$\%). After defining physical (pole) top quark mass $M_t$, by including QCD self-energies, and physical Higgs mass $M_H$, by including the electroweak self-energies $Π\left(M_H^2\right)-Π(0)$, we obtain the upper limit on $M_H$ as a function of supersymmetric parameters. We include as supersymmetric parameters the scale of supersymmetry breaking $M_S$, the value of $\tan β$ and the mixing between stops $X_t= A_t + μ\cotβ$ (which is responsible for the threshold correction on the Higgs quartic coupling). Our results do not depend on further details of the supersymmetric model. In particular, for $M_S\leq 1$ TeV, maximal threshold effect $X_t^2=6M_S^2$ and any value of $\tanβ$, we find $M_H\leq 140$ GeV for $M_t\leq 190$ GeV. In the particular scenario where the top is in its infrared fixed point we find $M_H\leq 86$ GeV for $M_t = 170$ GeV.

On Spontaneous Baryogenesis and Transport Phenomena

The spontaneous baryogenesis mechanism by Cohen, Kaplan and Nelson is reconsidered taking into account the transport of particles inside the electroweak bubble walls. Using linear response theory, we calculate the modifications on the thermal averages of the charges of the system due to the presence of a space time dependent `charge potential' for a quantum number not orthogonal to baryon number. The local equilibrium configuration is discussed, showing that, as a consequence of non zero densities for conserved charges, the $B+L$ density is driven to non zero values by sphaleronic processes. Solving a rate equation for the baryon number generation, we obtain an expression for the final baryon asymmetry of the Universe containing the relevant parameters of the bubble wall, {\it i.e.} its velocity, its width, and the width of the region in which sphalerons are active. Compared to previous estimates in which transport effects were not taken into account, we find an enhancement of nearly three orders of magnitude in the baryon asymmetry. Finally, the role of QCD sphalerons in cooperation with transport effects is analyzed, showing that the net result depends crucially on the particle species which enter into the charge potential.

On the Spontaneous CP Breaking at Finite Temperature in a Nonminimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

We study the spontaneous CP breaking at finite temperature in the Higgs sector in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with a gauge singlet. We consider the contribution of the standard model particles and that of stops, charginos, neutralinos, charged and neutral Higgs boson to the one-loop effective potential. Plasma effects for all bosons are also included. Assuming CP conservation at zero temperature, so that experimental constraints coming from, {\it e.g.}, the electric dipole moment of the neutron are avoided, and the electroweak phase transition to be of the first order and proceeding via bubble nucleation, we show that spontaneous CP breaking cannot occur inside the bubble mainly due to large effects coming from the Higgs sector. However, spontaneous CP breaking can be present in the region of interest for the generation of the baryon asymmetry, namely inside the bubble wall. The important presence of very tiny explicit CP violating phases is also commented.

A Single Scale Theory for Cold and Hot Dark Matter

We show that a recently proposed extension of the MSSM can provide a scenario where both the cold and hot dark matter of the universe owe their origin to a single scale connected with the breakdown of the global B-L symmetry. The susy partner of the majoron and the light Majorana neutrinos are the cold and hot dark matter candidates respectively in this model and their desired relative abundances emerge when the scale of B-L symmetry breaking is in the TeV range.

Spontaneous Breaking of R parity in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model Revisited

We reconsider the possibility of spontaneous breaking of $R$ parity in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. By a renormalization group analysis we find the parameter space in which a sneutrino gets a vacuum expectation value, leading to the spontaneous breaking of the lepton number and to the appearance of a phenomenologically unacceptable massless Goldstone boson. We then analyze the effect of operators giving rise to a tiny amount of explicit violation of lepton number, which could emerge as remnants of physics at some superheavy (Planck or GUT) scale in the low energy effective theory. We show that the conspiracy between the spontaneous and the explicit breaking scales can provide a mass to the Goldstone boson larger than the ${\rm Z}^0$ boson mass, hence allowing for a non vanishing sneutrino vacuum expectation value without increasing the invisible width of the ${\rm Z}^0$.

Baryogenesis through Collapsing String Loops in Gauged Baryon and Lepton Models

A scenario for the generation of the baryon asymmetry in the early Universe is proposed in which cosmic string loops, predicted by theories where the baryon and/or lepton numbers are gauged symmetries, collapse during the friction dominated period of string evolution. This provides a mechanism for the departure from thermal equilibrium necessary to have a nonvanishing baryon asymmetry. Examples of models are given where this idea can be implemented. In particular, the model with the gauge symmetry $SU(3)_{c}\otimes SU(2)_{L}\otimes U(1)_{Y}\otimes U(1)_{B} \otimes U(1)_{L}$ has the interesting feature where sphaleron processes do not violate the baryon and lepton numbers so that no wash out of any initial baryon asymmetry occurs at the electroweak scale.

Electromagnetic properties of the neutrinos and the pion radiative decay

We investigate the implications of neutrino electromagnetic dipole moments for the radiative decay $π\rightarrow e νγ$. We show that the dominant new effect comes from the interference between the amplitude of the process with the photon emitted by the neutrino and the structure dependent standard amplitude. Such interference takes place only if the massive neutrino is a Majorana fermion. Moreover, since electric and magnetic dipole moments give rise to contributions with opposite signs, future experiments might be able to distinguish between them.

Spontaneous CP Violation and Baryogenesis in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

We investigate the effects of the spontaneous CP violation at finite temperature in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model on the baryogenesis at the weak scale. After a brief discussion of the case in which the electroweak phase transition is of the second order, we study in details the baryogenesis scenario when the transition proceeds via bubble nucleation. We show that the space-time dependent phase for the Higgs vacuum expectation values coming from the spontaneous CP violation can give rise to a efficient generation of baryon number inside the bubble walls if the superpotential parameters and the soft supersymmetry breaking ones are complex. However we find that in order to get the observed value for the baryon asymmetry of the universe the phases of such parameters can be as small as $10^{-5}$, giving rise to an electron dipole moment of the neutron well below the current experimental limit. Moreover a light Higgs pseudoscalar is needed, and an upper bound on its mass is obtained.

Baryogenesis, Domain Walls and the Role of Gravity

It has been recently speculated that global symmetries are broken by gravity. We propose a scenario for the generation of the baryon asymmetry in the early Universe in which the domain walls predicted by theories with discrete symmetries become unstable due to these Planck scale effects. The relative motion of the decaying walls can provide a mechanism for the departure from thermal equilibrium necessary to have a nonvanishing baryon asymmetry. In particular, we implement this idea within the frameworks of the Left-Right and Quark-Lepton symmetric models.
