Spectral eigenfunction decomposition of a Fokker-Planck operator for relativistic heavy-ion collisions

A spectral solution method is proposed to solve a previuously developed non-equilibrium statistical model describing partial thermalization of produced charged hadrons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, thus improving the accuracy of the numerical solution. The particle's phase-space trajectories are treated as drift-diffusion stochastic process, leading to a Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) for the single-particle probability distribution function. The drift and diffusion coefficients are derived from the expected asymptotic states via appropriate fluctuation-dissipation relations, and the resulting FPE is then solved numerically using a spectral eigenfunction decomposition. The calculated time-dependent particle distributions are compared to Pb-Pb data from the ATLAS and ALICE collaborations at the Large Hadron Collider.

Boosted objects and jet substructure at the LHC

This report of the BOOST2012 workshop presents the results of four working groups that studied key aspects of jet substructure. We discuss the potential of the description of jet substructure in first-principle QCD calculations and study the accuracy of state-of-the-art Monte Carlo tools. Experimental limitations of the ability to resolve substructure are evaluated, with a focus on the impact of additional proton proton collisions on jet substructure performance in future LHC operating scenarios. A final section summarizes the lessons learnt during the deployment of substructure analyses in searches for new physics in the production of boosted top quarks.

Catalyst-free selective area growth of InN nanocolumns by MBE

Selective area growth of InN nanorods by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy is demonstrated. Molybdenum is found to be a suitable mask material at the low substrate temperature of 475 C needed for the growth of InN nanocolumns. The growth of arrays of single nanorods on a Si(111) substrate has been achieved with a thin molybdenum mask lithographically patterned with holes smaller than 60 nm.

Mechanical Design and Material Budget of the CMS Barrel Pixel Detector

The Compact Muon Solenoid experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN includes a silicon pixel detector as its innermost component. Its main task is the precise reconstruction of charged particles close to the primary interaction vertex. This paper gives an overview of the mechanical requirements and design choices for the barrel pixel detector. The distribution of material in the detector as well as its description in the Monte Carlo simulation are discussed in detail.

Proceedings of the Workshop on Monte Carlo's, Physics and Simulations at the LHC PART II

These proceedings collect the presentations given at the first three meetings of the INFN "Workshop on Monte Carlo's, Physics and Simulations at the LHC", held at the Frascati National Laboratories in 2006. The first part of these proceedings contains pedagogical introductions to several basic topics of both theoretical and experimental high pT LHC physics. The second part collects more specialised presentations.
