Dual characterization of critical fluctuations: Density functional theory & nonlinear dynamics close to a tangent bifurcation

We improve on the description of the relationship that exists between critical clusters in thermal systems and intermittency near the onset of chaos in low-dimensional systems. We make use of the statistical-mechanical language of inhomogeneous systems and of the renormalization group (RG) method in nonlinear dynamics to provide a more accurate, formal, approach to the subject. The description of this remarkable correspondence encompasses, on the one hand, the density functional formalism, where classical and quantum mechanical analogues match the procedure for one-dimensional clusters, and, on the other, the RG fixed-point map of functional compositions that captures the essential dynamical behavior. We provide details of how the above-referred theoretical approaches interrelate and discuss the implications of the correspondence between the high-dimensional (degrees of freedom) phenomenon and low-dimensional dynamics.

Typical length scales in conducting disorderless networks

We take advantage of a recently established equivalence, between the intermittent dynamics of a deterministic nonlinear map and the scattering matrix properties of a disorderless double Cayley tree lattice of connectivity $K$, to obtain general electronic transport expressions and expand our knowledge of the scattering properties at the mobility edge. From this we provide a physical interpretation of the generalized localization length.

Analytical prediction for the optical matrix

Contrary to praxis, we provide an analytical expression, for a physical locally periodic structure, of the average $\langle S\rangle$ of the scattering matrix, called optical $S$ matrix in the nuclear physics jargon, and fundamentally present in all scattering processes. This is done with the help of a strictly analogous nonlinear dynamical mapping where iteration time is the number $N$ of scatterers. The ergodic property of chaotic attractors implies the existence and analyticity of $\langle S\rangle$. We find that the optical $S$ matrix depends only on the transport properties of a single cell, and that the Poisson kernel is the distribution of the scattering matrix $S_N$ in the large size limit $N\rightarrow \infty$. The theoretical distribution shows perfect agreement with numerical results for a chain of delta potentials. A consequence of our findings is the a priori knowledge of $\langle S\rangle$ without resort to experimental data.

Möbius transformations and electronic transport properties of large disorderless networks

We show that the key transport states, insulating and conducting, of large regular networks of scatterers can be described generically by negative and zero Lyapunov exponents, respectively, of Möbius maps that relate the scattering matrix of systems with successive sizes. The conductive phase is represented by weakly chaotic attractors that have been linked with anomalous transport and ergodicity breaking. Our conclusions, verified for serial as well as parallel stub and ring structures, reveal that mesoscopic behavior results from a drastic reduction of degrees of freedom.

Stationary distributions of sums of marginally chaotic variables as renormalization group fixed points

We determine the limit distributions of sums of deterministic chaotic variables in unimodal maps assisted by a novel renormalization group (RG) framework associated to the operation of increment of summands and rescaling. In this framework the difference in control parameter from its value at the transition to chaos is the only relevant variable, the trivial fixed point is the Gaussian distribution and a nontrivial fixed point is a multifractal distribution with features similar to those of the Feigenbaum attractor. The crossover between the two fixed points is discussed and the flow toward the trivial fixed point is seen to consist of a sequence of chaotic band mergers.

Equivalence between the mobility edge of electronic transport on disorderless networks and the onset of chaos via intermittency in deterministic maps

We exhibit a remarkable equivalence between the dynamics of an intermittent nonlinear map and the electronic transport properties (obtained via the scattering matrix) of a crystal defined on a double Cayley tree. This strict analogy reveals in detail the nature of the mobility edge normally studied near (not at) the metal-insulator transition in electronic systems. We provide an analytical expression for the conductance as function of system size that at the transition obeys a q-exponential form. This manifests as power-law decay or few and far between large spike oscillations according to different kinds of boundary conditions.

q-deformed statistical-mechanical structure in the dynamics of the Feigenbaum attractor

We show that the two complementary parts of the dynamics associated to the Feigenbaum attractor, inside and towards the attractor, form together a q -deformed statistical-mechanical structure. A time-dependent partition function produced by summing distances between neighboring positions of the attractor leads to a q-entropy that measures the fraction of ensemble trajectories still away at a given time from the attractor (and the repellor). The values of the q-indexes are given by the attractor's universal constants, while the thermodynamic framework is closely related to that first developed for multifractals.

Dynamics towards the Feigenbaum attractor

We expose at a previously unknown level of detail the features of the dynamics of trajectories that either evolve towards the Feigenbaum attractor or are captured by its matching repellor. Amongst these features are the following: i) The set of preimages of the attractor and of the repellor are embedded (dense) into each other. ii) The preimage layout is obtained as the limiting form of the rank structure of the fractal boundaries between attractor and repellor positions for the family of supercycle attractors. iii) The joint set of preimages for each case form an infinite number of families of well-defined phase-space gaps in the attractor or in the repellor. iv) The gaps in each of these families can be ordered with decreasing width in accord to power laws and are seen to appear sequentially in the dynamics generated by uniform distributions of initial conditions. v) The power law with log-periodic modulation associated to the rate of approach of trajectories towards the attractor (and to the repellor) is explained in terms of the progression of gap formation. vi) The relationship between the law of rate of convergence to the attractor and the inexhaustible hierarchy feature of the preimage structure is elucidated.

Labyrinthine pathways towards supercycle attractors in unimodal maps

We uncover previously unknown properties of the family of periodic superstable cycles in unimodal maps characterized each by a Lyapunov exponent that diverges to minus infinity. Amongst the main novel properties are the following: i) The basins of attraction for the phases of the cycles develop fractal boundaries of increasing complexity as the period-doubling structure advances towards the transition to chaos. ii) The fractal boundaries, formed by the preimages of the repellor, display hierarchical structures organized according to exponential clusterings that manifest in the dynamics as sensitivity to the final state and transient chaos. iii) There is a functional composition renormalization group (RG) fixed-point map associated to the family of supercycles. iv) This map is given in closed form by the same kind of $q$-exponential function found for both the pitchfork and tangent bifurcation attractors. v) There is a final stage ultra-fast dynamics towards the attractor with a sensitivity to initial conditions that decreases as an exponential of an exponential of time.

Incidence of nonextensive thermodynamics in temporal scaling at Feigenbaum points

Recently, in Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 140601 (2005), P. Grassberger addresses the interesting issue of the applicability of q-statistics to the renowned Feigenbaum attractor. He concludes there is no genuine connection between the dynamics at the critical attractor and the generalized statistics and argues against its usefulness and correctness. Yet, several points are not in line with our current knowledge, nor are his interpretations. We refer here only to the dynamics on the attractor to point out that a correct reading of recent developments invalidates his basic claim.

Fluctuating dynamics at the quasiperiodic onset of chaos, Tsallis q-statistics and Mori's q-phase thermodynamics

We analyze the fluctuating dynamics at the golden-mean transition to chaos in the critical circle map and find that trajectories within the critical attractor consist of infinite sets of power laws mixed together. We elucidate this structure assisted by known renormalization group (RG) results. Next we proceed to weigh the new findings against Tsallis' entropic and Mori's thermodynamic theoretical schemes and observe behavior to a large extent richer than previously reported. We find that the sensitivity to initial conditions has the form of families of intertwined q-exponentials, of which we determine the q-indexes and the generalized Lyapunov coefficient spectra. Further, the dynamics within the critical attractor is found to consist of not one but a collection of Mori's q-phase transitions with a hierarchical structure. The value of Mori's `thermodynamic field' variable q at each transition corresponds to the same special value for the entropic index q. We discuss the relationship between the two formalisms and indicate the usefulness of the methods involved to determine the universal trajectory scaling function and/or the ocurrence and characterization of dynamical phase transitions.

Critical attractors and q-statistics

An account is given of the features, of the kind pertaining to q-statistics, of the dynamics at the one-dimensional critical attractors associated to the three familiar routes to chaos, intermittency, period doubling and quasiperiodicity. Connections between the properties of these attractors and those of systems with many degrees of freedom at extremal or transitional states are briefly described.

Tsallis' q index and Mori's q phase transitions at edge of chaos

We uncover the basis for the validity of the Tsallis statistics at the onset of chaos in logistic maps. The dynamics within the critical attractor is found to consist of an infinite family of Mori's $q$-phase transitions of rapidly decreasing strength, each associated to a discontinuity in Feigenbaum's trajectory scaling function $σ$. The value of $q$ at each transition corresponds to the same special value for the entropic index $q$, such that the resultant sets of $q$-Lyapunov coefficients are equal to the Tsallis rates of entropy evolution.

Unorthodox properties of critical clusters

We look at the properties of clusters of order parameter at critical points in thermal systems and consider their significance to statistical-mechanical ground rules. These properties have been previously obtained through the saddle-point approximation in a coarse-grained partition function. We examine both static and dynamical aspects of a single large cluster and indicate that these properties fall outside the canonical Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) scheme. Specifically: 1) The faster than exponential growth with cluster size of the space-integrated order parameter suggests nonextensivity of the BG entropy but extensivity of a q-entropy expression. 2) The finding that the time evolution of the order parameter is described by the dynamics of an intermittent nonlinear map implies an atypical sensitivity to initial conditions compatible with q-statistics and displays an 'aging' scaling property. 3) Both, the approach to criticality and the infinite-size cluster limit at criticality manifest through a crossover from canonical to q-statistics and we discuss the nonuniform convergence associated to these features. Key words: critical clusters, saddle-point approximation, q-entropy, intermittency, aging

Two stories outside Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics: Mori's q-phase transitions and glassy dynamics at the onset of chaos

First, we analyze trajectories inside the Feigenbaum attractor and obtain the atypical weak sensitivity to initial conditions and loss of information associated to their dynamics. We identify the Mori singularities in its Lyapunov spectrum with the appearance of a special value for the entropic index q of the Tsallis statistics. Secondly, the dynamics of iterates at the noise-perturbed transition to chaos is shown to exhibit the characteristic elements of the glass transition, e.g. two-step relaxation, aging, subdiffusion and arrest. The properties of the bifurcation gap induced by the noise are seen to be comparable to those of a supercooled liquid above a glass transition temperature.

A recent appreciation of the singular dynamics at the edge of chaos

We study the dynamics of iterates at the transition to chaos in the logistic map and find that it is constituted by an infinite family of Mori's $q$-phase transitions. Starting from Feigenbaum's $\sigma $ function for the diameters ratio, we determine the atypical weak sensitivity to initial conditions $\xi _{t}$ associated to each $q$-phase transition and find that it obeys the form suggested by the Tsallis statistics. The specific values of the variable $q$ at which the $q$-phase transitions take place are identified with the specific values for the Tsallis entropic index $q$ in the corresponding $\xi_{t}$. We describe too the bifurcation gap induced by external noise and show that its properties exhibit the characteristic elements of glassy dynamics close to vitrification in supercooled liquids, e.g. two-step relaxation, aging and a relationship between relaxation time and entropy.

Intermittency at critical transitions and aging dynamics at edge of chaos

We recall that, at both the intermittency transitions and at the Feigenbaum attractor in unimodal maps of non-linearity of order $\zeta >1$, the dynamics rigorously obeys the Tsallis statistics. We account for the $q$-indices and the generalized Lyapunov coefficients $\lambda_{q}$ that characterize the universality classes of the pitchfork and tangent bifurcations. We identify the Mori singularities in the Lyapunov spectrum at the edge of chaos with the appearance of a special value for the entropic index $q$. The physical area of the Tsallis statistics is further probed by considering the dynamics near criticality and glass formation in thermal systems. In both cases a close connection is made with states in unimodal maps with vanishing Lyapunov coefficients.

Aging at the edge of chaos: Glassy dynamics and nonextensive statistics

We go over our finding that the dynamics at the noise-perturbed edge of chaos in logistic maps is comparable to that observed in supercooled liquids close to vitrification. That is, the three major features of glassy dynamics in structural glass formers, two-step relaxation, aging, and a relationship between relaxation time and configurational entropy, are displayed by orbits with vanishing Lyapunov exponent. The known properties in control-parameter space of the noise-induced bifurcation gap play a central role in determining the characteristics of dynamical relaxation at the chaos threshold. Time evolution is obtained from the Feigenbaum RG transformation, it is expressed analytically via q-exponentials, and described in terms of nonextensive statistics. Key words: Glassy dynamics, ergodicity breakdown, edge of chaos, external noise, nonextensive statistics
