From local to macroscopic coherence in systems with composite quasi-particles

Strongly interacting systems are characterized by heavily dressed entities with internal degrees of freedom, which, on a local level, can be described in terms of coherent quantum states. We examine the modification of these local coherent quantum states when such entities condense into a macroscopic coherent quantum state, such as superfluidity. As an example, we consider a system of electrons coupled to local lattice deformations. Significant changes in the phonon clouds surrounding the charge carriers occur when the system develops into a spatially phase-locked state. The question of localized self-trapped charge carriers (bipolarons) in the normal state becoming delocalized upon entering the superconducting phase is discussed in terms of squeezing of the local coherent phonon states. Suggestions for experimental verifications of these features associated with the lattice dynamics are made.

Metal-insulator crossover in the Boson-Fermion model in infinite dimensions

The Boson-Fermion model, describing a mixture of tightly bound electron pairs and quasi-free electrons hybridized with each other via a charge exchange term, is studied in the limit of infinite dimensions, using the Non-Crossing Approximation within the Dynamical Mean Field Theory. It is shown that a metal-insulator crossover, driven by strong pair fluctuations, takes place as the temperature is lowered. It manifests itself in the opening of a pseudogap in the electron density of states, accompanied by a corresponding effect in the optical and dc conductivity.

Electronic and phononic states of the Holstein-Hubbard dimer of variable length

We consider a model Hamiltonian for a dimer including all the electronic one- and two-body terms consistent with a single orbital per site, a free Einstein phonon term, and an electron-phonon coupling of the Holstein type. The bare electronic interaction parameters were evaluated in terms of Wannier functions built from Gaussian atomic orbitals. An effective polaronic Hamiltonian was obtained by an unrestricted displaced-oscillator transformation, followed by evaluation of the phononic terms over a squeezed-phonon variational wave function. For the cases of quarter-filled and half-filled orbital, and over a range of dimer length values, the ground state was identified by simultaneously and independently optimizing the orbital shape, the phonon displacement and the squeezing effect strength. As the dimer length varies, we generally find discontinuous changes of both electronic and phononic states, accompanied by an appreciable renormalization of the effective electronic interactions across the transitions, due to the equilibrium shape of the wave functions strongly depending on the phononic regime and on the type of ground state.

Interrelation between the pseudogap and the incoherent quasi-particle features of high-Tc superconductors

Using a scenario of a hybridized mixture of localized bipolarons and conduction electrons, we demonstrate for the latter the simultaneous appearance of a pseudogap and of strong incoherent contributions to their quasi-particle spectrum which arise from phonon shake-off effects. This can be traced back to temporarily fluctuating local lattice deformations, giving rise to a double-peak structure in the pair distribution function, which should be a key feature in testing the origin of these incoherent contributions, recently seen in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).
