Implications of the universal scaling relation in high-temperature superconductors

The recently discovered universal scaling relation between the superconducting density and the transition temperature in high-temperature superconductors appears to indicate that those normal state carriers that are undergoing a superconducting transition at T = Tc, are experiencing critical dissipation and acting as preformed pairs.

The effect of electron correlation on the superconducting and normal properties of the cuprates

The strong electron correlation in the cuprates can lead to an enhanced effective mass for both bosonic and fermionic quasiparticles. Where this correlation is characterized by a length that is inversely proportional to the effective temperature, the thermal wavelength for the bosonic quasiparticles becomes essentially independent of temperature. Applying this concept to a preformed pair model, such as the (Cu)13 cluster model, gives Tc vs dopant curves and superconducting gaps in good agreement with experiment. In addition, a correlation-enhanced effective mass provides a natural explanation for the anomalous normal state resistivity and optical conductivity of the cuprates.

Stripes and the (Cu)13-BEC model

The (Cu)13-BEC model of high-temperature superconductivity was previously shown to account for many of the principal thermodynamic and electronic properties of the superconducting cuprates. Here I show that this model is also able to account for many of the key characteristics of the coupled CDW and SDW orders in these compounds. These include the general coexistence of metallic parallel stripes with superconductivity, the well-known linear relationship between the incommensurability of the SDW-induced IC magnetic peaks and the dopant concentration, as well as the saturation of this incommensurabilty at a value of about 1/8 for doping greater than 1/8. The model also provides a natural explanation for the celebrated 1/8-anomaly in LSCO and LBCO. It is also able to account for the severe suppression of the superconductivity in LNSCO at all doping levels and for the variations in the properties of LBSCO, at a fixed hole doping of 1/8, as its crystal structure is changed. Furthermore, the (Cu)13-BEC model is also consistent with many of the characteristics of the SDW orders in Y123. Most importantly, scanning tunneling microscopy results on Bi2212 appear to provide a direct validation of the CDW order predicted by the model.

A Bose-Einstein condensation model for high-temperature superconductivity

I propose that a dopant charge singlet bonding state may arise from the hybridization of molecular orbitals in a cluster containing 13 Cu atoms in the CuO2 plane of the superconducting cuprates. This singlet state forms a pre-formed pair with low binding energy that is spatially bounded and weakly interacting, and that can undergo Bose-Einstein condensation. I show that this model is able to account, in a quantitative and natural way, for many of the thermodynamic and electronic characteristics of the superconducting cuprates, including many of the key experimental ARPES, muSR and microwave results on the temperature and doping dependencies of both the superfluid density and the pairing strengths (superconducting gap, leading-edge-midpoint and psuedogap) in these high-temperature superconductors.
