First results of Resistive-Plate Well (RPWELL) detector operation at 163 K

We present for the first time, discharge-free operation at cryogenic conditions of a Resistive-Plate WELL (RPWELL) detector. It is a single-sided Thick Gaseous Electron Multiplier (THGEM) coupled to a readout anode via a plate of high bulk resistivity. The results of single- and double-stage RPWELL detectors operated in stable conditions in Ne/5$\%$CH$_{4}$ at 163 K are summarized. The RPWELL comprised a ferric-based (Fe$^{3+}$) ceramic composite ("Fe-ceramic") as the resistive plate, of volume resistivity $\sim$$10^{11}$ $Ω$$\cdot$cm at this temperature. Gains of $\sim$$10^{4}$ and $\sim$$10^{5}$ were reached with the single-stage RPWELL, with 6 keV X-rays and single UV-photons, respectively. The double-stage detector, a THGEM followed by the RPWELL, reached gains $\sim$$10^{5}$ and $\sim$$10^{6}$ with X-rays and single UV-photons, respectively. The results were obtained with and without a CsI photocathode on the first multiplying element. Potential applications at these cryogenic conditions are discussed.

Dynamical properties of acoustic-gravity waves in the atmosphere

We study the dynamical behaviors of a system of five coupled nonlinear equations that describes the dynamics of acoustic-gravity waves in the atmosphere. A linear stability analysis together with the analysis of Lyapunov exponents spectra are performed to show that the system can develop from ordered structures to chaotic states. Numerical simulation of the system of equations reveals that an interplay between the order and chaos indeed exists depending on whether the control parameter $s_1$, associated with the density scale height of acoustic-gravity waves, is below or above its critical value.

Laser spectroscopy of $^{176}$Lu$^+$

We perform high resolution spectroscopy on $^{176}$Lu$^+$ including the $^1S_0\leftrightarrow{^3}D_1$ and $^1S_0\leftrightarrow{^3}D_2$ clock transitions. Hyperfine structures and optical frequencies relative to the $^1S_0$ ground state of four low lying excited states are given to a few tens of kHz resolution. This covers the most relevant transitions involved in clock operation with this isotope. Additionally, measurements of the $^3D_2$ hyperfine structure may provide access to higher order nuclear moments, specifically the magnetic octupole and electric hexadecapole moments.

Recent Advances in Bubble-Assisted Liquid Hole Multipliers in Liquid Xenon

We report on recent advances in the operation of bubble-assisted Liquid Hole Multipliers (LHM). By confining a vapor bubble under or adjacent to a perforated electrode immersed in liquid xenon, we could record both radiation-induced ionization electrons and primary scintillation photons in the noble liquid. Four types of LHM electrodes were investigated: a THGEM, standard double-conical GEM, 50 $μ$m-thick single-conical GEM (SC-GEM) and 125 $μ$m-thick SC-GEM - all coated with CsI photocathodes. The 125 $μ$m-thick SC-GEM provided the highest electroluminescence (EL) yields, up to ~400 photons per electron over 4$π$ with an RMS pulse-height resolution reaching 5.5% for events comprising ~7000 primary electrons. Applying a high transfer field across the bubble, the EL yield was further increased by a factor of ~5. The feasibility of a vertical-mode LHM, with the bubble confined between two vertical electrodes, and the operation of a two-stage LHM configuration were demonstrated for the first time. We combine electrostatic simulations with observed signals to draw conclusions regarding the location of the liquid-gas interface and suggest an explanation for the observed differences in EL yield between the investigated electrodes.

Discrete model for cloud computing: Analysis of data security and data loss

Cloud computing is recognized as one of the most promising solutions to information technology, e.g., for storing and sharing data in the web service which is sustained by a company or third party instead of storing data in a hard drive or other devices. It is essentially a physical storage system which provides large storage of data and faster computing to users over the Internet. In this cloud system, the third party allows to preserve data of clients or users only for business purpose and also for a limited period of time. The users are used to share data confidentially among themselves and to store data virtually to save the cost of physical devices as well as the time. In this paper, we propose a discrete dynamical system for cloud computing and data management of the storage service between a third party and users. A framework, comprised of different techniques and procedures for distribution of storage and their implementation with users and the third party is given. For illustration purpose, the model is considered for two users and a third party, and its dynamical properties are briefly analyzed and discussed. It is shown that the discrete system exhibits periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic states. The latter discerns that the cloud computing system with distribution of data and storage between users and the third party may be secured. Some issues of data security are discussed and a random replication scheme is proposed to ensure that the data loss can be highly reduced compared to the existing schemes in the literature.

Chaos-based image encryption using vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

We study the encryption and decryption processes of color images using the synchronization of polarization dynamics in a free-running vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). Here, we consider a bidirectional master-slave configuration or two-way coupling with two VCSELs. The latter are shown to exhibit hyperchaos and synchronization with a high level of similarity between their emission characteristics. The coupled VCSELs are then used as a transmitter and a receiver for the communication of image or data. Furthermore, we propose a modified chaos-based image encryption algorithm using the pixel- and bit-level permutations which provides robust, faster and simpler encryption/decryption compared to many other chaos-based cryptosystems. The performances of the new cryptosystem are analyzed and compared with a recently developed scheme [Opt. Las. Eng. 90 (2017) 238-246]. The security analysis and some statistical investigations show that the proposed cryptosystem is resistant to various types of attacks and is efficient for secure communications in nonlinear optical media.

Characterizing the properties of nearby molecular filaments observed with Herschel

[Abridged] Molecular filaments have received special attention recently, thanks to new observational results on their properties. In particular, our early analysis of filament properties revealed a narrow distribution of median widths centered at a value of about 0.1 pc. Here, we extend and complement our initial study with the analysis of the filamentary structures observed in eight nearby molecular clouds. We use the column density maps derived from Herschel data and the DisPerSE algorithm to trace a network of filaments in each cloud. We build synthetic maps to assess the completeness limit of our extracted sample and validate our measurements. Our analysis yields a selected sample of 599 filaments with aspect ratios larger than 3 and column density contrasts larger than 0.3. We show that our sample is more than 95% complete for column density contrasts larger than 1, with only 5% of spurious detections. On average, more than 15% of the total gas mass in the clouds, and more than 80% of the dense gas mass, is found to be in the form of filaments, respectively. Analysis of the radial column density profiles of the 599 filaments indicates a narrow distribution of crest-averaged inner widths, with a median value of 0.10 pc and an interquartile range of 0.07 pc. In contrast, the filaments span wide ranges in length, central column density, column density contrast, and mass per unit length. The characteristic filament width is well resolved by Herschel observations, and a median value of 0.1 pc is consistently found using three distinct estimates based on (1) a direct measurement of the width at half power after background subtraction, as well as (2) Gaussian and (3) Plummer fits. The existence of a characteristic filament width is further supported by the presence of a tight correlation between mass per unit length and central column density for the observed filaments.

On the Production of an Isotensor Dibaryon in the $pp \to ppπ^+π^-$ Reaction

Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $pp \to ppπ^+π^-$ reaction have been performed by means of $pd$ collisions at $T_p$ = 1.2 GeV using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained covering the energy region $T_p = 1.08 - 1.36$ GeV ($\sqrt s$ = 2.35 - 2.46 GeV), which includes the regions of $N^*(1440)$ and $Δ(1232)Δ(1232)$ resonance excitations. Calculations describing these excitations by $t$-channel meson exchange are at variance with experimental differential cross sections and underpredict substantially the measured total cross section. An isotensor $ΔN$ dibaryon resonance with $I(J^P) = 2(1^+)$ produced associatedly with a pion is able to overcome these deficiencies. Such a dibaryon was predicted by Dyson and Xuong and more recently calculated by Gal and Garcilazo.

A new type of RPC with very low resistive material

There are several working groups that are currently working on high rate RPC's using different materials such as Si-based Ceramics, Low-resistive Glass, low-resistive bakelite etc. A new type of single gap RPC has been fabricated using very low-resistive carbon-loaded PTFE material to compete with all these other groups and materials. In terms of bulk resistivity, this material is the lowest and should in principle be able to work at the highest rates, provided the material can withstand working bias and radiation. The efficiency and noise rate of the RPC are measured with cosmic rays. The detail method of fabrication and first experimental results are presented.

An Isotensor Dibaryon in the $pp \to ppπ^+π^-$ Reaction?

Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $pp \to ppπ^+π^-$ reaction have been carried out at WASA@COSY by means of $pd$ collisions at $T_p$ = 1.2 GeV. Total and differential cross sections have been extracted covering the energy region $T_p = 1.08 - 1.36$ GeV, which is the region of $N^*(1440)$ and $Δ(1232)Δ(1232)$ resonance excitations. Calculations describing these excitations by $t$-channel meson exchange are at variance with the measured differential cross sections and underpredict substantially the experimental total cross section. An isotensor $ΔN$ dibaryon resonance with $I(J^P) = 2(1^+)$ produced associatedly with a pion is able to overcome these deficiencies.

Backward single-pion production in the $\boldsymbol{pd\rightarrow {}^3\textrm{He}\,π^0}$ reaction with WASA-at-COSY

New data on the production of single neutral pions in the $pd\rightarrow{}^3\textrm{He}\,π^0$ reaction are presented. For fifteen proton beam momenta between $p_p=1.60\;\textrm{GeV}/c$ and $p_p=1.74\;\textrm{GeV}/c$, differential cross sections are determined over a large fraction of the backward hemisphere. Since the only previous systematic measurements of single-pion production at these energies were made in collinear kinematics, the present work constitutes a significant extension of the current knowledge on this reaction. Even this far above the production threshold, significant changes are found in the behaviour of the angular distributions over small intervals in beam momentum.

Importance of d-wave contributions in the charge symmetry breaking reaction $dd \to {}^4\text{He}π^0$

This letter reports a first quantitative analysis of the contribution of higher partial waves in the charge symmetry breaking reaction $dd \to {}^4\text{He}π^0$ using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup at an excess energy of $Q = 60$ MeV. The determined differential cross section can be parametrized as $\text{d}σ/\text{d}Ω= a + b\cos^{2}θ^*$, where $θ^*$ is the production angle of the pion in the center-of-mass coordinate system, and the results for the parameters are $a = \left(1.55 \pm 0.46 (\text{stat}) ^{+0.32}_{-0.8} (\text{syst}) \right)$ pb/sr and $b = \left(13.1 \pm 2.1 (\text{stat}) ^{+1.0}_{-2.7} (\text{syst})\right)$ pb/sr. The data are compatible with vanishing p-waves and a sizable d-wave contribution. This finding should strongly constrain the contribution of the $Δ$ isobar to the $dd \to {}^4\text{He}π^0$ reaction and is, therefore, crucial for a quantitative understanding of quark mass effects in nuclear production reactions.

Search for $C$ violation in the decay $η\rightarrowπ^0+e^++e^-$ with WASA-at-COSY

We report on the investigation of the rare decay $η\rightarrowπ^0+\text{e}^++\text{e}^-$ which is of interest to study both $C$ violation in the electromagnetic interaction and to search for contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, since the allowed decay via a two-photon intermediate state is strongly suppressed. The experiment has been performed using the WASA-at-COSY installation, located at the COSY accelerator of the Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany. In total $3\times10^7$ events of the reaction $\text{p}+\text{d}\rightarrow{^3\text{He}}+η$ have been recorded at an excess energy of $Q = 59.8\,\textrm{MeV}$. Based on this data set the $C$ parity violating decay $η\rightarrowπ^0+γ^*\rightarrowπ^0+\textrm{e}^++\textrm{e}^-$ via a single-photon intermediate state has been searched for, resulting in new upper limits of $Γ\left(η\rightarrowπ^0+\textrm{e}^++\textrm{e}^-\right)/ Γ\left(η\rightarrowπ^++π^-+π^0\right) < 3.28\times10^{-5}$ and $Γ\left(η\rightarrowπ^0+\textrm{e}^++\textrm{e}^-\right)/ Γ\left(η\rightarrow\textrm{all}\right) < 7.5\times10^{-6}\ (\textrm{CL} = 90\,\%)$, respectively.

Total and differential cross sections of $η$-production in proton-deuteron fusion for excess energies between $Q_η=13\;\text{MeV}$ and $Q_η=81\;\text{MeV}$

New data on both total and differential cross sections of the production of $η$ mesons in proton-deuteron fusion to ${}^3\text{He}\,η$ in the excess energy region $13.6\;\text{MeV}\leq Q_η\leq 80.9\;\text{MeV}$ are presented. These data have been obtained with the WASA-at-COSY detector setup located at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, using a proton beam at 15 different beam momenta between $p_p = 1.60\;\text{GeV}/c$ and $p_p = 1.74\;\text{GeV}/c$. While significant structure of the total cross section is observed in the energy region $20\;\text{MeV}\lesssim Q_η\lesssim 60\;\text{MeV}$, a previously reported sharp variation around $Q_η\approx 50\;\text{MeV}$ cannot be confirmed. Angular distributions show the typical forward-peaking that was reported elsewhere. For the first time, it is possible to study the development of these angular distributions with rising excess energy over a large interval.

Far-infrared observations of a massive cluster forming in the Monoceros R2 filament hub

We present far-infrared observations of Monoceros R2 (a giant molecular cloud at approximately 830 pc distance, containing several sites of active star formation), as observed at 70 μm, 160 μm, 250 μm, 350 μm, and 500 μm by the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) instruments on the Herschel Space Observatory as part of the Herschel imaging survey of OB young stellar objects (HOBYS) Key programme. The Herschel data are complemented by SCUBA-2 data in the submillimetre range, and WISE and Spitzer data in the mid-infrared. In addition, C18O data from the IRAM 30-m Telescope are presented, and used for kinematic information. Sources were extracted from the maps with getsources, and from the fluxes measured, spectral energy distributions were constructed, allowing measurements of source mass and dust temperature. Of 177 Herschel sources robustly detected in the region (a detection with high signal-to-noise and low axis ratio at multiple wavelengths), including protostars and starless cores, 29 are found in a filamentary hub at the centre of the region (a little over 1% of the observed area). These objects are on average smaller, more massive, and more luminous than those in the surrounding regions (which together suggest that they are at a later stage of evolution), a result that cannot be explained entirely by selection effects. These results suggest a picture in which the hub may have begun star formation at a point significantly earlier than the outer regions, possibly forming as a result of feedback from earlier star formation. Furthermore, the hub may be sustaining its star formation by accreting material from the surrounding filaments.

Spin dependence of η meson production in proton-proton collisions close to threshold

Taking advantage of the high acceptance and axial symmetry of the WASA-at-COSY detector, and the high degree of the polarized proton beam of COSY, the reaction pp{\to} ppη has been measured close to threshold to explore the analyzing power Ay. The angular distribution of Ay is determined with the precision improved by more than one order of magnitude with respect to previous results allowing a first accurate comparison with theoretical predictions. The determined analyzing power is consistent with zero for an excess energy of Q = 15 MeV signaling s wave production with no evidence for higher partial waves. At Q = 72 MeV the data reveals strong interference of P s and P p partial waves and cancellation of (P p) and Ss*Sd contributions. These results rule out the presently available theoretical predictions for the production mechanism of the η meson.

Superconductivity of Cobalt in Thin Films

Due to competing long range ferromagnetic order, the transition metals Fe, Co and Ni are not superconductors at ambient pressure. While superconductivity was observed in a non-magnetic phase of Fe, stabilized under pressure, it is yet to be discovered in Co and Ni under any experimental conditions. Here, we report emergence of superconductivity in the recently discovered high-density nonmagnetic face centered cubic phase in Co thin films below a transition temperature (Tc) of ~5.4 K, as revealed in experiments based on point-contact spectroscopy and resistance, and four-probe measurements of resistance at ambient pressure. We confirm the non-magnetic nature of the dense fcc phase of Co within first-principles density functional theory, and show that its superconductivity below 5 K originates from anomalous softening of zone-boundary phonons and their enhanced coupling with electrons upon biaxial strain.

Static and dynamic polarizabilities of Yb-ion]{Accurate determination of black-body radiation shift, magic and tune-out wavelengths for the $\rm 6S_{1/2} \rightarrow 5D_{3/2}$ clock transition in Yb$^+$

We present precise values of the dipole polarizabilities ($α$) of the ground $\rm [4f^{14}6s] ~ ^2S_{1/2}$ and metastable $\rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ states of Yb$^+$, that are %vital {\bf important} in reducing systematics in the clock frequency of the $\rm[4f^{14}6s] ~ ^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow [4f^{14}5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ transition. The static values of $α$ for the ground and $\rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ states are estimated to be $9.8(1) \times 10^{-40} \,\,\rm Jm^2V^{-2}$ and $17.6(5) \times 10^{-40}\,\, \rm Jm^2V^{-2}$, respectively, while the tensor contribution to the $\rm [4f^{14} 5d] ~ ^2D_{3/2}$ state as $- 12.3(3) \times 10^{-40}\,\, \rm Jm^2V^{-2}$ compared to the experimental value $-13.6(2.2) \times 10^{-40}\,\,\rm Jm^2V^{-2}$. This corresponds to the differential scalar polarizability value of the above transition as $-7.8$(5)$\,\times\, 10^{-40}\,\rm Jm^2 V^{-2}$ in contrast to the available experimental value $-6.9$(1.4)$\,\times\, 10^{-40}$\,\, $\rm Jm^2V^{-2}$. This results in the black-body radiation (BBR) shift of the clock transition as $-0.44(3)$ Hz at the room temperature, which is large as compared to the previously estimated values. Using the dynamic $α$ values, we report the tune-out and magic wavelengths that could be of interest to subdue %major systematics due to the Stark shifts and for constructing lattice optical clock using Yb$^+$.
