Ab initio calculations of the dynamical response of copper

The role of localized $d$-bands in the dynamical response of Cu is investigated, on the basis of {\em ab initio} pseudopotential calculations. The density-response function is evaluated in both the random-phase approximation (RPA) and a time-dependent local-density functional approximation (TDLDA). Our results indicate that in addition to providing a polarizable background which lowers the free-electron plasma frequency, d-electrons are responsible, at higher energies and small momenta, for a double-peak structure in the dynamical structure factor. These results are in agreement with the experimentally determined optical response of copper. We also analyze the dependence of dynamical scattering cross sections on the momentum transfer.

Ab-initio structural, elastic, and vibrational properties of carbon nanotubes

A study based on ab initio calculations is presented on the estructural, elastic, and vibrational properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes with different radii and chiralities. We use SIESTA, an implementation of pseudopotential-density-functional theory which allows calculations on systems with a large number of atoms per cell. Different quantities like bond distances, Young moduli, Poisson ratio and the frequencies of different phonon branches are monitored versus tube radius. The validity of expectations based on graphite is explored down to small radii, where some deviations appear related to the curvature effects. For the phonon spectra, the results are compared with the predictions of the simple zone-folding approximation. Except for the known defficiencies of this approximation in the low-frequency vibrational regions, it offers quite accurate results, even for relatively small radii.

Elastic Properties of Single-Wall Nanotubes

We report results of theoretical studies on the elastic properties of single-wall nanotubes of the following compositions: C, BN, ${BC}_3$, ${BC}_2{N}$ and ${C}_3{N}_4$. These studies have been carried out using a total energy, non-orthogonal tight-binding parametrisation which is shown to provide results in good agreement both with calculations using higher levels of theory and the available experimental data. Our results predict that of all types of nanotubes considered, carbon nanotubes have the highest Young's modulus. We have considered tubes of different diameters, ranging from 0.5 to 2~nm, and find that in the limit of large diameters the mechanical properties of nanotubes approach those of the corresponding flat graphene-like sheets.

Elastic Properties of C and BxCyNz Composite Nanotubes

We present a comparative study of the energetic, structural and elastic properties of carbon and composite single-wall nanotubes, including BN, BC3 and BC2N nanotubes, using a non-orthogonal tight-binding formalism. Our calculations predict that carbon nanotubes have a higher Young modulus than any of the studied composite nanotubes, and of the same order as that found for defect-free graphene sheets. We obtain good agreement with the available experimental results.
