An alternative scheme for pionless EFT: neutron-deuteron scattering in the doublet S-wave

Using the effective-range expansion for the two-body amplitudes may generate spurious sub-threshold poles outside of the convergence range of the expansion. In the infinite volume, the emergence of such poles leads to the breakdown of unitarity in the three-body amplitude. We discuss the extension of our alternative subtraction scheme for including effective range corrections in pionless effective field theory for spinless bosons to nucleons. In particular, we consider the neutron-deuteron system in the doublet S-wave channel explicitly.

An alternative scheme for effective range corrections in pionless EFT

We discuss an alternative scheme for including effective range corrections in pionless effective field theory. The standard approach treats range terms as perturbative insertions in the T -matrix. In a finite volume this scheme can lead to singular behavior close to the unperturbed energies. We consider an alternative scheme that resums the effective range but expands the spurious pole of the T -matrix created by this resummation. We test this alternative expansion for several model potentials and observe good convergence.

On the mass difference between proton and neutron

The Cottingham formula expresses the electromagnetic part of the mass of a particle in terms of the virtual Compton scattering amplitude. At large photon momenta, this amplitude is dominated by short distance singularities associated with operators of spin 0 and spin 2. In the difference between proton and neutron, chiral symmetry suppresses the spin 0 term. Although the angular integration removes the spin 2 singularities altogether, the various pieces occurring in the standard decomposition of the Cottingham formula do pick up such contributions. These approach asymptotics extremely slowly because the relevant Wilson coefficients only fall off logarithmically. We rewrite the formula in such a way that the leading spin 2 contributions are avoided ab initio. Using a sum rule that follows from Reggeon dominance, the numerical evaluation of the e.m. part of the mass difference between proton and neutron yields $m_{QED}^{p-n}=0.58\pm 0.16\,$MeV. The result indicates that the inelastic contributions are small compared to the elastic ones.

Sum rule for the Compton amplitude and implications for the proton-neutron mass difference

The Cottingham formula expresses the leading contribution of the electromagnetic interaction to the proton-neutron mass difference as an integral over the forward Compton amplitude. Since quarks and gluons reggeize, the dispersive representation of this amplitude requires a subtraction. We assume that the asymptotic behaviour is dominated by Reggeon exchange. This leads to a sum rule that expresses the subtraction function in terms of measurable quantities. The evaluation of this sum rule leads to $m_{QED}^{p-n}=0.58\pm 0.16\,\mbox{MeV}$.

Finite volume corrections to forward Compton scattering off the nucleon

We calculate the spin-averaged amplitude for doubly virtual forward Compton scattering off nucleons in the framework of manifestly Lorentz invariant baryon chiral perturbation theory at complete one-loop order $O(p^4)$. The calculations are carried out both in the infinite and in a finite volume. The obtained results allow for a detailed estimation the finite-volume corrections to the amplitude which can be extracted on the lattice using the background field technique.

Cottingham formula and nucleon polarizabilities

The difference between the electromagnetic self-energies of proton and neutron can be calculated with the Cottingham formula, which expresses the self-energies as an integral over the electroproduction cross sections---provided the nucleon matrix elements of the current commutator do not contain a fixed pole. We show that, under the same proviso, the subtraction function occurring in the dispersive representation of the virtual Compton forward scattering amplitude is determined by the cross sections. The representation in particular leads to a parameter-free sum rule for the nucleon polarizabilities. We evaluate the sum rule for the difference between the electric polarizabilities of proton and neutron by means of the available parameterizations of the data and compare the result with experiment.

Three-body spectrum in a finite volume: the role of cubic symmetry

The three-particle quantization condition is partially diagonalized in the center-of-mass frame by using cubic symmetry on the lattice. To this end, instead of spherical harmonics, the kernel of the Bethe-Salpeter equation for particle-dimer scattering is expanded in the basis functions of different irreducible representations of the octahedral group. Such a projection is of particular importance for the three-body problem in the finite volume due to the occurrence of three-body singularities above breakup. Additionally, we study the numerical solution and properties of such a projected quantization condition in a simple model. It is shown that, for large volumes, these solutions allow for an instructive interpretation of the energy eigenvalues in terms of bound and scattering states.

Resonance properties from lattice energy levels using chiral effective field theory

We use the chiral effective field theory to study the lattice finite-volume energy levels from the meson-meson scattering. The hadron resonance properties and the scattering amplitudes at physical masses are determined from the lattice energy levels calculated at unphysically large pion masses. The results from the $πη, K\bar{K}$ and $πη'$ coupled-channel scattering and the $a_0(980)$ resonance are explicitly given as a concrete example.

Towards a precise determination of the scattering amplitudes of the charmed and light-flavor pseudoscalar mesons

We study the scattering of the light-flavor pseudoscalar mesons ($π, K, η$) off the ground-state charmed mesons ($D,D_s$) within chiral effective field theory. The recent lattice simulation results on various scattering lengths and the finite-volume spectra both in the moving and center-of-mass frames, most of which are obtained at unphysical meson masses, are used to constrain the free parameters in our theory. Explicit formulas to include the $S$- and $P$-wave mixing to determine the finite-volume energy levels are provided. After a successful reproduction of the lattice data, we perform a chiral extrapolation to predict the quantities with physical meson masses, including phase shifts, inelasticities, resonance pole positions and the corresponding residues from the scattering of the light pseudoscalar and charmed mesons.

Three-particle bound states in a finite volume: unequal masses and higher partial waves

An explicit expression for the finite-volume energy shift of shallow three-body bound states for non-identical particles is obtained in the unitary limit. The inclusion of the higher partial waves is considered. To this end, the method of arXiv:1412.4969 (Meißner et al.) is generalized for the case of unequal masses and arbitrary angular momenta. It is shown that in the S-wave and in the equal mass limit, the result from arXiv:1412.4969 is reproduced.

Workshop on Pion-Kaon Interactions (PKI2018) Mini-Proceedings. Editors: M. Amaryan, Ulf-G. Meißner, C. Meyer, J. Ritman, and I. Strakovsky

This volume is a short summary of talks given at the PKI2018 Workshop organized to discuss current status and future prospects of pi-K interactions. The precise data on pi-K interaction will have a strong impact on strange meson spectroscopy and form factors that are important ingredients in the Dalitz plot analysis of a decays of heavy mesons as well as precision measurement of Vus matrix element and therefore on a test of unitarity in the first raw of the CKM matrix. The workshop has combined the efforts of experimentalists, Lattice QCD, and phenomenology communities. Experimental data relevant to the topic of the workshop were presented from the broad range of different collaborations like CLAS, GlueX, COMPASS, BaBar, BELLE, BESIII, VEPP-2000, and LHCb. One of the main goals of this workshop was to outline a need for a new high intensity and high precision secondary KL beam facility at JLab produced with the 12 GeV electron beam of CEBAF accelerator. This workshop is a successor of the workshops Physics with Neutral Kaon Beam at JLab [1] held at JLab, February, 2016; Excited Hyperons in QCD Thermodynamics at Freeze-Out [2] held at JLab, November, 2016; New Opportunities with High-Intensity Photon Sources [3] held at CUA, February, 2017. Further details about the PKI2018 Workshop can be found on the web page of the conference: http://www.jlab.org/conferences/pki2018/ .

Three particle quantization condition in a finite volume: 2. general formalism and the analysis of data

We derive the three-body quantization condition in a finite volume using an effective field theory in the particle-dimer picture. Moreover, we consider the extraction of physical observables from the lattice spectrum using the quantization condition. To illustrate the general framework, we calculate the volume-dependent three-particle spectrum in a simple model both below and above the three-particle threshold. The relation to existing approaches is discussed in detail.

Feynman-Hellmann theorem for resonances and the quest for QCD exotica

The generalization of the Feynman-Hellmann theorem for resonance states in quantum field theory is derived. On the basis of this theorem, a criterion is proposed to study the possible exotic nature of certain hadronic states emerging in QCD. It is shown that this proposal is supported by explicit calculations in Chiral Perturbation Theory and by large-$N_c$ arguments. Analyzing recent lattice data on the quark mass dependence in the pseudoscalar, vector meson, baryon octet and baryon decuplet sectors, we conclude that, as expected, these are predominately quark-model states, albeit the corrections are non-negligible.

Three-particle quantization condition in a finite volume: 1. The role of the three-particle force

Using non-relativistic effective Lagrangians in the particle-dimer picture, we rederive the expression for the energy shift of a loosely bound three-particle bound state of identical bosons in the unitary limit. The effective field theory formalism allows us to investigate the role of the three-particle force, which has not been taken into account in the earlier treatment of the problem. Moreover, we are able to relax the requirement of the unitary limit of infinite scattering length and demonstrate a smooth transition from the weakly bound three-particle state to a two-particle bound state of a particle and a deeply bound dimer.

Chiral study of the $a_0(980)$ resonance and $πη$ scattering phase shifts in light of a recent lattice simulation

We investigate the $a_0(980)$ resonance within chiral effective field theory through a three-coupled-channel analysis, namely $πη$, $K\bar{K}$ and $πη'$. A global fit to recent lattice finite-volume energy levels from $πη$ scattering and relevant experimental data on a $πη$ event distribution and the $γγ\toπη$ cross section is performed. Both the leading and next-to-leading-order analyses lead to similar and successful descriptions of the finite-volume energy levels and the experimental data. However, these two different analyses yield different $πη$ scattering phase shifts for the physical masses for the $π, K, η$ and $η'$ mesons. The inelasticities, the pole positions in the complex energy plane and their residues are calculated both for unphysical and physical meson masses.

Bound states on the lattice with partially twisted boundary conditions

We propose a method to study the nature of exotic hadrons by determining the wave function renormalization constant $Z$ from lattice simulations. It is shown that, instead of studying the volume-dependence of the spectrum, one may investigate the dependence of the spectrum on the twisting angle, imposing twisted boundary conditions on the fermion fields on the lattice. In certain cases, e.g., the case of the $DK$ bound state which is addressed in detail, it is demonstrated that the partial twisting is equivalent to the full twisting up to exponentially small corrections.

Generating functional of ChPT at one loop for non-minimal operators

The divergent part of the one-loop effective action in Chiral Perturbation Theory with virtual photons has been evaluated in an arbitrary covariant gauge. The differential operator, that emerges in the functional determinant, is of a non-minimal type, for which the standard heat kernel methods are not directly applicable. Both SU(2) and SU(3) cases have been worked out. A comparison with existing results in the literature is given.

Scattering phases for meson and baryon resonances on general moving-frame lattices

A proposal by Lüscher enables one to compute the scattering phases of elastic two-body systems from the energy levels of the lattice Hamiltonian in a finite volume. In this work we generalize the formalism to S--, P-- and D--wave meson and baryon resonances, and general total momenta. Employing nonvanishing momenta has several advantages, among them making a wider range of energy levels accessible on a single lattice volume and shifting the level crossing to smaller values of $m_πL$.
