$K^{*}(892)^0$ production and the time between freeze-outs in $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc collisions by NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS

The analysis of the production of strange $K^{*}(892)^0$ resonances allows us to better understand the temporal evolution of high-energy nucleus--nucleus collisions. In particular, the ratio of $K^{*}(892)^0$ to charged kaon yields is used to determine the time interval between chemical and kinetic freeze-outs. In this paper, the first measurements of $K^{*}(892)^0$ production in central $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron are reported. They were performed by NA61/SHINE at collision center-of-mass energies per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 8.8, 11.9, 16.8 GeV. The obtained $\langle K^{*}(892)^0 \rangle/\langle K^{+} \rangle $ and $\langle K^{*}(892)^0 \rangle/\langle K^{-} \rangle$ mean multiplicity ratios are compared with corresponding results in $p$+$p$ collisions, allowing for an estimate of the time interval between chemical and thermal freeze-outs in the $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc system. These are the first such results reported for $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc collisions.

Proposal from the NA61/SHINE Collaboration for update of European Strategy for Particle Physics

Building on the current program's success and driven by new physics challenges, the NA61/SHINE Collaboration proposes to continue measuring hadron production properties in reactions induced by hadron and ion beams after CERN Long Shutdown 3. These measurements are of significant interest to the heavy-ion, cosmic-ray, and neutrino physics communities and will focus on: - Investigating hadron production in the light-ion systems to explore the diagram of high-energy nuclear collisions, and to obtain new insight into the unexpected violation of isospin (flavor) symmetry recently observed by the experiment; - Measuring charm-anticharm correlations to gain unique insights into the production locality of charm and anticharm quark pairs; - Examining strangeness and multi-strangeness production to improve our understanding of the early Universe's evolution and neutron star formation; - Measuring cross sections relevant for cosmic-ray measurements, significantly boosting searches for new physics in our Galaxy; - Conducting hadron production measurements with proton, pion, and kaon beams for neutrino physics, enhancing the precision of hadron production data needed for initial neutrino flux predictions in neutrino oscillation experiments; - Measuring hadron production processes relevant for understanding the flux of atmospheric neutrinos, as well as neutrinos and muons from spallation sources. To achieve these objectives, a detector upgrade and a beam upgrade are required, with data-taking planned for the period 2029-2032 and beyond.

Summary Report of the Physics Beyond Colliders Study at CERN

The Physics Beyond Collider (PBC) Study Group was initially mandated by the CERN Management to prepare the previous European Particle Physics Strategy Update for CERN projects other than the high-energy frontier colliders. The main findings were summarized in an PBC Summary Report submitted to the Strategy Update. Following the Update process, the PBC Study Group was confirmed on a permanent basis with an updated mandate taking into account the strategy recommendations. The Study Group is now in charge of supporting the proponents of new ideas to address the technical issues and physics motivation of the projects ahead of their review by the CERN Scientific Committees and decision by the Management. The present document updates the previous PBC summary report to inform the new ongoing European Particle Physics Strategy Update process, taking into account the evolution of the CERN and worldwide landscapes and the new projects under consideration within the Study Group.

Polish national input to the 2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

The Polish high energy physics (HEP) community fully recognizes the urgent need to host at CERN a flagship project implementing a broad, long-term, and comprehensive vision of particle physics research and pursuing technological advances. Thus, we give preference and declare willingness to actively engage and participate in every aspect of the FCC project (both FCC-ee and FCC-hh), particularly accelerator development, detector construction, theoretical calculations, and physics analyses. As the e+e- Higgs Factory is the top priority for our field, the proposal to build a linear collider facility at CERN, opening up complementary physics prospects, should be considered as the second option. Polish teams declare strong support and are fully committed to contribute to the full exploitation of all aspects of the physics potential of the LHC and the HL-LHC programmes. To ensure the long-term development of particle physics, we also support the continuation of the high-field magnet research programme, as well as investigating other scenarios including, in particular, linear acceleration techniques and new acceleration technologies such as plasma acceleration, the muon collider and Gamma Factory. In addition, CERN should continue to provide support to fixed-target programmes at SPS as well as other non-collider and non-accelerator experiments at CERN. Participation in major projects conducted in and outside Europe should also be fostered. Education, communication, and outreach of particle physics are of paramount importance for the future of our field. An increased effort coordinated at the European level and resources allocated in all Member States are essential to effectively support future large-scale particle physics projects.

Multiplicity and net-electric charge fluctuations in central Ar+Sc interactions at 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A, and 150A GeV/c beam momenta measured by NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS

This paper presents results on multiplicity fluctuations of positively and negatively charged hadrons as well as net-electric charge fluctuations measured in central Ar+Sc interactions at beam momenta 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A, and 150A GeV/c. The fluctuation analysis is one of the tools to search for the predicted critical point of strongly interacting matter. Results are corrected for the experimental biases and quantified using cumulant ratios. In most instances, multiplicity and net-charge distributions appear narrower than the corresponding Poisson or Skellam distributions. Cumulant ratios are compared with the EPOS1.99 model predictions, which provide a qualitative description that aligns with observations for positively and negatively charged particles. The obtained results are also compared to earlier NA61/SHINE results from inelastic p+p interactions in the same analysis acceptance.

Spectator induced electromagnetic effects in heavy-ion collisions and space-time-momentum conditions for pion emission

We present our calculation of electromagnetic effects, induced by the spectator charge on Feynman-$x_F$ distributions of charged pions in peripheral $Pb+Pb$ collisions at CERN SPS energies, including realistic initial space-time-momentum conditions for pion emission. The calculation is performed in the framework of our simplified implementation of the fire-streak model, adopted to the production of both $π^-$ and $π^+$ mesons. Isospin effects are included to take into account the asymmetry in production of $π^+$ and $π^-$ at high rapidity. A comparison to a simpler model from the literature is made. We obtain a good description of the NA49 data on the $x_F$- and $p_T$-dependence of the ratio of cross sections $π^+/π^-$. The experimental data favors short times ($0.5<τ<2$~fm/$c$) for fast pion creation in the local fire-streak rest frame. The possibility of the expansion of the spectators is considered in our calculation, and its influence on the electromagnetic effect observed for the $π^+/π^-$ ratio is discussed. In addition we discuss the relation between anisotropic flow and the electromagnetic distortion of $π^+/π^-$ ratios, and study the influence of transverse expansion of fire streaks as well as their vorticity on this distortion. In this latter study we find that inclusion of rotation of fire streaks in our model gives a satisfactory description of the rapidity dependence of pion directed flow. We conclude that {our implementation of the} fire-streak model, which properly describes the centrality dependence of $π^-$ rapidity spectra at CERN SPS energies, also provides a quantitative description of the electromagnetic effect on the $π^+/π^-$ ratio as a function of $x_F$.

Role of the spectator system in electromagnetic effects

The electromagnetic effects on charged pion ($π^+,π^-$) spectra provide new, independent information on the space-time evolution of the ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision. The spectator life time and its excitation energy may also be of importance for the understanding of the space-time evolution of the participant zone. This paper gives an overview of our coordinated effort to understand the interplay between electromagnetic phenomena and processes related to the fragmentation of the spectator system at forward rapidity in peripheral $Pb$+$Pb$ collisions at top CERN SPS energies. Our study includes on one hand the experimental analysis of electromagnetic effects and corresponding phenomenological Monte Carlo simulations, and on the other hand dedicated theoretical calculations based on the Abrasion-Ablation model ABRABLA and the 4D Langevin approach.

Production of deuterium, tritium, and $^3$He in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV at the CERN SPS

Production of $d$, $t$, and $^3$He nuclei in central Pb+Pb interactions was studied at five collision energies ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 6.3, 7.6, 8.8, 12.3, and 17.3 GeV) with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS. Transverse momentum spectra, rapidity distributions, and particle ratios were measured. Yields are compared to predictions of statistical models. Phase-space distributions of light nuclei are discussed and compared to those of protons in the context of a coalescence approach. The coalescence parameters $B_2$ and $B_3$, as well as coalescence radii for $d$ and $^3$He were determined as a function of transverse mass at all energies.

Critical fluctuations of the proton density in A+A collisions at $158A$ GeV

We look for fluctuations expected for the QCD critical point using an intermittency analysis in the transverse momentum phase space of protons produced around midrapidity in the 12.5\% most central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions at the maximum SPS energy of 158$A$~GeV. We find evidence of power-law fluctuations for the Si+Si data. The fitted power-law exponent $ϕ_{2} = 0.96^{+0.38}_{-0.25}\text{ (stat.)}$ $\pm 0.16\text{ (syst.)}$ is consistent with the va\-lue expected for critical fluctuations. Power-law fluctuations had previously also been observed in low-mass $π^+ π^-$ pairs in the same Si+Si collisions.

Measurement of event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations using strongly intensive measures $Δ[P_T, N]$ and $Σ[P_T, N]$ in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron

Results from the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS are presented on event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles, produced at forward rapidities in central Pb+Pb interactions at beam momenta 20$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 80$A$, and 158$A$ GeV/c, as well as in systems of different size ($p+p$, C+C, Si+Si, and Pb+Pb) at 158$A$ GeV/c. This publication extends the previous NA49 measurements of the strongly intensive measure $Φ_{p_T}$ by a study of the recently proposed strongly intensive measures of fluctuations $Δ[P_T, N]$ and $Σ[P_T, N]$. In the explored kinematic region transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations show no significant energy dependence in the SPS energy range. However, a remarkable system size dependence is observed for both $Δ[P_T, N]$ and $Σ[P_T, N]$, with the largest values measured in peripheral Pb+Pb interactions. The results are compared with NA61/SHINE measurements in $p+p$ collisions, as well as with predictions of the UrQMD and EPOS models.

Charge splitting of directed flow and charge-dependent effects in pion spectra in heavy ion collisions

The large and rapidly varying electric and magnetic fields induced by the spectator systems moving at ultrarelativistic velocities induce a charge splitting of directed flow, $v_1$, of positive and negative pions in the final state of the heavy ion collision. The same effect results in a very sizeable distortion of charged pion spectra as well as ratios of charged pions ($π^+/π^-$) emitted at high values of rapidity. Both phenomena are sensitive to the actual distance between the pion emission site and the spectator system. This distance $d_E$ appears to decrease with increasing rapidity of the pion, and comes below $\sim$1~fm for pions emitted close to beam rapidity. In this paper we discuss how these findings can shed new light on the space-time evolution of pion production as a function of rapidity, and on the longitudinal evolution of the system created in heavy ion collisions.

Phase-space dependence of particle-ratio fluctuations in Pb+Pb collisions from 20A to 158A GeV beam energy

A novel approach, the identity method, was used for particle identification and the study of fluctuations of particle yield ratios in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). This procedure allows to unfold the moments of the unknown multiplicity distributions of protons (p), kaons (K), pions ($π$) and electrons (e). Using these moments the excitation function of the fluctuation measure $ν_{\text{\text{dyn}}}$[A,B] was measured, with A and B denoting different particle types. The obtained energy dependence of $ν_{\text{dyn}}$ agrees with previously published NA49 results on the related measure $σ_{\text{dyn}}$. Moreover, $ν_{\text{dyn}}$ was found to depend on the phase space coverage for [K,p] and [K,$π$] pairs. This feature most likely explains the reported differences between measurements of NA49 and those of STAR in central Au+Au collisions.

Inclusive production of protons, anti-protons, neutrons, deuterons and tritons in p+C collisions at 158 GeV/c beam momentum

The production of protons, anti-protons, neutrons, deuterons and tritons in minimum bias p+C interactions is studied using a sample of 385 734 inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The data cover a phase space area ranging from 0 to 1.9 GeV/c in transverse momentum and in Feynman x from -0.80 to 0.95 for protons, from -0.2 to 0.4 for anti-protons and from 0.2 to 0.95 for neutrons. Existing data in the far backward hemisphere are used to extend the coverage for protons and light nuclear fragments into the region of intranuclear cascading. The use of corresponding data sets obtained in hadron-proton collisions with the same detector allows for the detailed analysis and model-independent separation of the three principle components of hadronization in p+C interactions, namely projectile fragmentation, target fragmentation of participant nucleons and intranuclear cascading.

A survey of backward proton and pion production in p+C interactions at beam momenta from 1 to 400 GeV/c

New data on proton and pion production in p+C interactions from the CERN PS and SPS accelerators are used in conjunction with other available data sets to perform a comprehensive survey of backward hadronic cross sections. This survey covers the complete backward hemisphere in the range of lab angles from 10 to 180 degrees, from 0.2 to 1.4 GeV/c in lab momentum and from 1 to 400 GeV/c in projectile momentum. Using the constraints of continuity and smoothness of the angular, momentum and energy dependences a consistent description of the inclusive cross sections is established which allows the control of the internal consistency of the nineteen available data sets.

Energy dependence of kaon-to-proton ratio fluctuations in central Pb+Pb collisions from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 6.3 to 17.3 GeV

Kaons and protons carry large parts of two conserved quantities, strangeness and baryon number. It is argued that their correlation and thus also fluctuations are sensitive to conditions prevailing at the anticipated parton-hadron phase boundary. Fluctuations of the $(\mathrm{K}^+ + \mathrm{K}^-)/(\mathrm{p}+\bar{\mathrm{p}})$ and $\mathrm{K}^+/\mathrm{p}$ ratios have been measured for the first time by NA49 in central Pb+Pb collisions at 5 SPS energies between $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 6.3 GeV and 17.3 GeV. Both ratios exhibit a change of sign in $σ_{\mathrm{dyn}}$, a measure of non-statistical fluctuations, around $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8 GeV. Below this energy, $σ_{\mathrm{dyn}}$ is positive, indicating higher fluctuation compared to a mixed event background sample, while for higher energies, $σ_{\mathrm{dyn}}$ is negative, indicating correlated emission of kaons and protons. The results are compared to UrQMD calculations which which give a good description at the higher SPS energies, but fail to reproduce the transition to positive values.

Proton -- Lambda Correlations in Central Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 17.3 GeV

The momentum correlation between protons and lambda particles emitted from central Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 17.3 GeV was studied by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. A clear enhancement is observed for small relative momenta (q_{inv} < 0.2 GeV). By fitting a theoretical model, which uses the strong interaction between the proton and the lambda in a given pair, to the measured data a value for the effective source size is deduced. Assuming a static Gaussian source distribution we derive an effective radius parameter of R_G = 3.02 \pm 0.20$(stat.)^{+0.44}_{-0.16}(syst.) fm.

Centrality dependence of proton and antiproton spectra in Pb+Pb collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV measured at the CERN SPS

The yields of (anti-)protons were measured by the NA49 Collaboration in centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV. Particle identification was obtained in the laboratory momentum range from 5 to 63 GeV/c by the measurement of the energy loss dE/dx in the TPC detector gas. The corresponding rapidity coverage extends 1.6 units from mid-rapidity into the forward hemisphere. Transverse mass spectra, the rapidity dependences of the average transverse mass, and rapidity density distributions were studied as a function of collision centrality. The values of the average transverse mass as well as the midrapidity yields of protons when normalized to the number of wounded nucleons show only modest centrality dependences. In contrast, the shape of the rapidity distribution changes significantly with collision centrality, especially at 40A GeV. The experimental results are compared to calculations of the HSD and UrQMD transport models.

Inclusive production of charged kaons in p+p collisions at 158 GeV/c beam momentum and a new evaluation of the energy dependence of kaon production up to collider energies

New data on the production of charged kaons in p+p interactions are presented. The data come from a sample of 4.8 million inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The kaons are identified by energy loss in a large TPC tracking system. Inclusive invariant cross sections are obtained in intervals from 0 to 1.7 GeV/c in transverse momentum and from 0 to 0.5 in Feynman x. Using these data as a reference, a new evaluation of the energy dependence of kaon production, including neutral kaons, is conducted over a range from 3 GeV to p+anti-p collider energies.
