Bloch waves of small high-Tc bipolarons

Over the last decade several competing models of high-temperature superconductivity were proposed, most of them with short-range interactions. We review a more realistic model with strong on-site repulsive correlations, the Coulomb and strong finite-range electron-phonon interactions. Bipolarons in the model exist in the itinerant Bloch states at temperatures below about half of the characteristic phonon frequency. Depending on the ratio of the inter-site Coulomb repulsion and the polaron level shift the ground state of the model is a polaronic Fermi (or Luttinger) liquid, bipolaronic high-Tc superconductor, or charge-segregated insulator for the strong, intermediate, and weak Coulomb repulsion, respectively. Two particular lattices are analysed in detail: a chain with the finite range electron-phonon interaction and a zig-zag ladder. Charge carriers in the ladder are superlight mobile intersite bipolarons. They propagate coherently without emission or absorption of phonons with about the same mass as single polarons. The model describes key features of the cuprates, in particular their Tc values, different isotope effects, normal state pseudogaps, and spectral functions measured in tunnelling and photoemission.

Universal upper critical field of unconventional superconductors

The resistive upper critical field, Hc2(T) of cuprates, superconducting spin-ladders, and organic (TMTSF)2X systems is shown to follow a universal nonlinear temperature dependence in a wide range near Tc, while its low-temperature behaviour depends on the chemical formula and sample quality. Hc2(T) is ascribed to the Bose-Einstein condensation field of preformed pairs. The universality originates from the scaling arguments. Exceeding the Pauli paramagnetic limit is explained. Controversy in the determination of Hc2(T) from the kinetic and thermodynamic measurements is resolved in the framework of the charged Bose-gas model with impurity scattering.

Froehlich-Coulomb model of high-temperature superconductivity and charge segregation in the cuprates

We introduce a generic Froehlich-Coulomb model of the oxides, which also includes infinite on-site (Hubbard) repulsion, and describe a simple analytical method of solving the multi-polaron problem in complex lattice structures. Two particular lattices, a zig-zag ladder and a perovskite layer, are studied. We find that depending on the relative strength of the Froehlich and Coulomb interactions these systems are either polaronic Fermi (or Luttinger)-liquids, bipolaronic superconductors, or charge segregated insulators. In the superconducting phase the carriers are superlight mobile bipolarons. The model describes key features of the cuprates such as their Tc values, the isotope effects, the normal state diamagnetism, pseudogap, and spectral functions measured in tunnelling and photoemission. We argue that a low Fermi energy and strong coupling of carriers with high-frequency phonons is the cause of high critical temperatures in novel superconductors.

High temperature superconductivity and charge segregation in a model with strong long-range electron-phonon and Coulomb interactions

An analytical method of studying strong long-range electron-phonon and Coulomb interactions in complex lattices is presented. The method is applied to a perovskite layer with anisotropic coupling of holes to the vibrations of apical atoms. Depending on the relative strength of the polaronic shift, Ep, and the inter-site Coulomb repulsion, Vc, the system is either a polaronic Fermi liquid, Vc > 1.23 Ep, a bipolaronic superconductor, 1.16 Ep < Vc < 1.23 Ep, or a charge segregated insulator, Vc < 1.16 Ep. In the superconducting window, the carriers are mobile bipolarons with a remarkably low effective mass. The model describes the key features of the underdoped superconducting cuprates.

Excitations and phase segregation in a two component Bose-Einstein condensate

Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations and the excitation spectrum of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) are derived with an arbitrary interaction between bosons, including long-range and short range forces. The nonconverting BEC mixture segregates into two phases for some two-body interactions. Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations are solved for the phase segregated BEC. A possibility of boundary-surface and other localised excitations is studied.

Three-body scattering problem and two-electron tunneling in molecular wires

We solve the Lippmann-Schwinger equation describing elastic scattering of preformed pairs (e.g. bipolarons) off a short-range scattering center and find the two-particle transmission through a thin potential barrier. While the pair transmission is smaller than the single-electron transmission in the strong-coupling limit, it is remarkably larger in the weak coupling limit. We also calculate current-voltage characteristics of a molecule - barrier - molecule junction. They show unusual temperature and voltage behavior which are experimentally verifiable at low temperatures.

Angular dependence of novel magnetic quantum oscillations in a quasi-two-dimensional multiband Fermi liquid with impurities

The semiclassical Lifshitz-Kosevich-type description is given for the angular dependence of quantum oscillations with combination frequencies in a multiband quasi-two-dimensional Fermi liquid with a constant number of electrons. The analytical expressions are found for the Dingle, thermal, spin, and amplitude (Yamaji) reduction factors of the novel combination harmonics, where the latter two strongly oscillate with the direction of the field. At the "magic" angles those factors reduce to the purely two-dimensional expressions given earlier. The combination harmonics are suppressed in the presence of the non-quantized ("background") states, and they decay exponentially faster with temperature and/or disorder compared to the standard harmonics, providing an additional tool for electronic structure determination. The theory is applied to Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Nonadiabatiic superconductivity in MgB2 and cuprates

The Fermi energy, Ef of newly discovered high-Tc superconductor MgB2 and cuprates is estimated from the measured London penetration depth using a parameter-free expression. Ef of MgB2 and more than 30 lanthanum, yttrium and mercury-based cuprates appears to be about or below 100 meV, depending on doping. There is every evidence that the remarkable low value of Ef and the strong coupling of carriers with high-frequency phonons is the cause of high Tc in all newly discovered superconductors. Taking into account that the carriers mainly reside on oxygen in cuprates, on boron in magnesium diborade, and on carbon in doped fullerenes, these superconductors form what is essentially $nonadiabatic$ 'metallic' oxygen, boron and carbon, respectively. The boron isotope effect on the carrier mass in magnesium-diboride similar to the oxygen isotope effect on the supercarrier mass observed by Guo-meng Zhao et al. in cuprates is predicted.

Theory of SIS tunnelling in cuprates

We show that the single-particle polaron Green's function describes SIS tunnelling in cuprates, including the absence of Ohm's law at high voltages, the dip/hump features in the first derivative of the current, a substantial incoherent spectral weight beyond quasiparticle peaks and unusual shape of the peaks. The theory allows us to determine the characteristic phonon frequencies, normal and superconducting gaps, impurity scattering rate, and the electron-phonon coupling from the tunnelling data.

Breakdown of the Migdal-Eliashberg theory in the strong-coupling adiabatic regime

In view of some recent works on the role of vertex corrections in the electron-phonon system we readress an important question of the validity of the Migdal-Eliashberg theory. Based on the solution of the Holstein model and inverse coupling constant expansion, we argue that the standard Feynman-Dyson perturbation theory by Migdal and Eliashberg with or without vertex corrections cannot be applied if the electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$ is larger than 1 for any ratio of the phonon and Fermi energies. In the extreme adiabatic limit of the Holstein model electrons collapse into self-trapped small polarons or bipolarons due to spontaneous translational-symmetry breaking when $λ$ is between 0.5 and 1.3 (depending on the lattice dimensionality). With the increasing phonon frequency the region of the applicability of the theory shrinks to lower values of the coupling constant.

Quasiparticle lifetimes in the charged Bose gas and the cuprates

The scattering cross section of a Coulomb potential screened by a charged Bose gas (CBG) is calculated both above and below the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature, using the variable phase method. In contrast with the BCS superconductor, the screened scattering potential and quasiparticle lifetime are found to be very different in the superconducting and normal states. We apply the result to explain the appearence of a sharp peak in the ARPES spectra in some cuprates below the superconducting transition.

Stripes in charge-transfer Mott insulators: effects of lattice vibrations and the Coulomb interaction

Applying the canonical transformation with the 1/λperturbation expansion in the nonadiabatic and intermediate regime and the discrete generalisation of Pekar's continuous nonlinear equation in the extreme adiabatic regime we show that there are no strings in narrow-band ionic insulators due to the Frohlich electron-phonon interaction alone. The multi-polaron system is a homogeneous state in a wide range of physically interesting parameters, no matter how strong correlations are. At the same time the Frohlich interaction allows the antiferromagnetic interactions and/or a short-range electron-phonon interactions to form short strings in doped antiferromagnetic insulators if the static dielectric constant is large enough.

Evidence for novel polaronic Fermi-liquid in doped oxides

The modern multi-polaron theory predicts a polaronic Fermi-liquid state, but such a state has not been unambigously confirmed by experiment so far. Here we report theoretical and experimental studies of the isotope effects on the low temperature kinetic properties of the doped ferromagnetic manganites. Our results provide clear evidence for a novel polaronic Fermi-liquid state in doped oxides.

d-Wave bipolaronic stripes and two energy scales in cuprates

There is strong experimental evidence for pairing of polaronic carriers in the normal state, two distinct energy scales, d-wave superconducting order parameter, and charge segregation in the form of stripes in several cuprates. All these remarkable phenomena might be unified in the framework of the bipolaron theory as a result of the formation of mobile bipolarons in the normal state and their Bose-Einstein condensation. Extending the BCS theory towards an intermediate and strong-coupling regime we show that there are two energy scales in this regime, a temperature independent incoherent gap and a temperature dependent coherent gap combining into one temperature dependent global gap. The temperature dependence of the gap and single particle (Giaver) tunnelling spectra in cuprates are quantitatively described. A framework for understanding of two distinct energy scales observed in Giaver tunnelling and Andreev reflection experiments is provided. We suggest that both d-wave superconducting order parameter and striped charge distribution result from the bipolaron (center-of-mass) energy band dispersion rather than from any particular interaction.

Semi-classical theory of magnetic quantum oscillations in a two-dimensional multiband canonical Fermi liquid

The semi-classical Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) description of quantum oscillations is extended to a multiband two-dimensional Fermi liquid with a constant number of electrons. The amplitudes of novel oscillations with combination frequencies, recently predicted and observed experimentally, are analytically derived and compared with the single-band amplitudes. The combination amplitudes decay with temperature exponentially faster than the standard harmonics, and this provides a valuable tool for their experimental identification.

C-axis negative magnetoresistance and upper critical field of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8

The out-of-plane resistance and the resistive upper critical field of BSCCO-2212 single crystals with Tc=91-93 K have been measured in magnetic fields up to 50 T over a wide temperature range. The results are characterised by a positive linear magnetoresistance in the superconducting state and a negative linear magnetoresistance in the normal state. The zero field normal state c-axis resistance, the negative linear normal state magnetoresistance, and the divergent upper critical field Hc2(T)are explained in the framework of the bipolaron theory of superconductivity.
