Precise test of Higgs properties via triple Higgs production in VBF at future colliders

For certain classes of Beyond the Standard Model theories, including composite Higgs models, the coupling of the Higgs to gauge bosons can be different from the Standard Model one. In this case, the multi-boson production via vector boson fusion (VBF) can be hugely enhanced in comparison to the SM production one due to the lack of cancellation in longitudinal vector boson scattering. Among these processes, triple Higgs boson production in VBF plays a special role - its enhancement is especially spectacular due to the absence of background from transversely polarised vector bosons in the final state. While the rates from $pp\to jjhhh$ production in vector boson fusion are too low at the LHC and even at future 33 TeV $pp$ colliders, we have found that the 100 TeV $pp$ future circular collider (FCC) has the unique opportunity to probe the $hVV$ coupling far beyond the LHC sensitivity. We have evaluated the $pp\to jjhhh$ rates as a function of deviation from the $hVV$ coupling and have found that the background is much smaller than the signal for observable signal rates. We also found that the 100 TeV $pp$ FCC can probe the $hVV$ coupling up to the permille level, which is far beyond the LHC reach. These results highlight a special role of the $hhh$ VBF production and stress once more the importance of the 100 TeV $pp$ FCC.

SUSY at the LHC without Missing P_T

We consider a specific class of events of the SUSY particle production at the LHC without missing p_T. Namely, we discuss the chargino pair production with a further decay into the W-boson and the neutralino when the masses of the chargino and neutralino differ by 80-90 GeV. In this case, in the final state one has two Ws and missing E_T but no missing P_T. The produced neutralinos are just boosted along Ws. For a demonstration we consider the MSSM with non-universal gaugino masses. In this case, such events are quite probable in the region of parameter space where the lightest chargino and neutralino are mostly gauginos. The excess in the W production cross-section reach about 10 % over the Standard Model background. We demonstrate that the LHC experiments, which presently measure the WW production cross section at the 8 % level can probe chargino mass around 110 GeV within the suggested scenario, which is not accessible via other searches. If the precision of WW cross section measurement at the LHC will achieve the 3 % level, then it would probe chargino masses up to about 150 GeV within the no missing P_T scenario.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN

This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated luminosity of O(100) fb$^{-1}$. It will become the cleanest high resolution microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by the LHC.

On the Relation of the LHeC and the LHC

The present note relies on the recently published conceptual design report of the LHeC and extends the first contribution to the European strategy debate in emphasising the role of the LHeC to complement and complete the high luminosity LHC programme. The brief discussion therefore focuses on the importance of high precision PDF and $α_s$ determinations for the physics beyond the Standard Model (GUTs, SUSY, Higgs). Emphasis is also given to the importance of high parton density phenomena in nuclei and their relevance to the heavy ion physics programme at the LHC.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN: Report on the Physics and Design Concepts for Machine and Detector

The physics programme and the design are described of a new collider for particle and nuclear physics, the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), in which a newly built electron beam of 60 GeV, up to possibly 140 GeV, energy collides with the intense hadron beams of the LHC. Compared to HERA, the kinematic range covered is extended by a factor of twenty in the negative four-momentum squared, $Q^2$, and in the inverse Bjorken $x$, while with the design luminosity of $10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ the LHeC is projected to exceed the integrated HERA luminosity by two orders of magnitude. The physics programme is devoted to an exploration of the energy frontier, complementing the LHC and its discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model with high precision deep inelastic scattering measurements. These are designed to investigate a variety of fundamental questions in strong and electroweak interactions. The physics programme also includes electron-deuteron and electron-ion scattering in a $(Q^2, 1/x)$ range extended by four orders of magnitude as compared to previous lepton-nucleus DIS experiments for novel investigations of neutron's and nuclear structure, the initial conditions of Quark-Gluon Plasma formation and further quantum chromodynamic phenomena. The LHeC may be realised either as a ring-ring or as a linac-ring collider. Optics and beam dynamics studies are presented for both versions, along with technical design considerations on the interaction region, magnets and further components, together with a design study for a high acceptance detector. Civil engineering and installation studies are presented for the accelerator and the detector. The LHeC can be built within a decade and thus be operated while the LHC runs in its high-luminosity phase. It thus represents a major opportunity for progress in particle physics exploiting the investment made in the LHC.

Torsion Phenomenology at the LHC

We explore the potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to test the dynamical torsion parameters. The form of the torsion action can be established from the requirements of consistency of effective quantum field theory. The most phenomenologically relevant part of the torsion tensor is dual to a massive axial vector field. This axial vector has geometric nature, that means it does not belong to any representation of the gauge group of the SM extension or GUT theory. At the same time, torsion should interact with all fermions, that opens the way for the phenomenological applications. We demonstrate that LHC collider can establish unique constraints on the interactions between fermions and torsion field considerably exceeding present experimental lower bounds on the torsion couplings and its mass. It is also shown how possible non-universal nature of torsion couplings due to the renormalization group running between the Planck and TeV energy scales can be tested via the combined analysis of Drell-Yan and $t\bar{t}$ production processes.

Sneutrino Mass Measurements at e+e- Linear Colliders

It is generally accepted that experiments at an e+e- linear colliders will be able to extract the masses of the selectron as well as the associated sneutrinos with a precision of ~ 1% by determining the kinematic end points of the energy spectrum of daughter electrons produced in their two body decays to a lighter neutralino or chargino. Recently, it has been suggested that by studying the energy dependence of the cross section near the production threshold, this precision can be improved by an order of magnitude, assuming an integrated luminosity of 100 fb^-1. It is further suggested that these threshold scans also allow the masses of even the heavier second and third generation sleptons and sneutrinos to be determined to better than 0.5%. We re-examine the prospects for determining sneutrino masses. We find that the cross sections for the second and third generation sneutrinos are too small for a threshold scan to be useful. An additional complication arises because the cross section for sneutrino pair to decay into any visible final state(s) necessarily depends on an unknown branching fraction, so that the overall normalization in unknown. This reduces the precision with which the sneutrino mass can be extracted. We propose a different strategy to optimize the extraction of m(\tildeν_μ) and m(\tildeν_τ) via the energy dependence of the cross section. We find that even with an integrated luminosity of 500 fb^-1, these can be determined with a precision no better than several percent at the 90% CL. We also examine the measurement of m(\tildeν_e) and show that it can be extracted with a precision of about 0.5% (0.2%) with an integrated luminosity of 120 fb^-1 (500 fb^-1).

CompHEP-PYTHIA interface: integrated package for the collision events generation based on exact matrix elements

CompHEP, as a partonic event generator, and PYTHIA, as a generator of final states of detectable objects, are interfaced. Thus, integrated tool is proposed for simulation of (almost) arbitrary collision processes at the level of detectable particles. Exact (multiparticle) matrix elements, convolution with structure functions, decays, partons hadronization and (optionally) parton shower evolution are basic stages of calculations. The PEVLIB library of event generators for LHC processes is described.

Single Top Quark at Future Hadron Colliders. Complete Signal and Background Study

We perform a detail theoretical study including decays and jet fragmentation of all the important modes of the single top quark production and all basic background processes at the upgraded Tevatron and LHC colliders. Special attention was paid to the complete tree level calculation of the QCD fake background which was not considered in the previous studies. Analysis of the various kinematical distributions for the signal and backgrounds allowed to work out a set of cuts for an efficient background suppression and extraction of the signal. It was shown that the signal to background ratio after optimized cuts could reach about 0.4 at the Tevatron and 1 at the LHC. The remaining after cuts rate of the signal at the LHC for the $lepton+jets $ signature is expected to be about 6.1 pb and will be enough to study the single top physics even during the LHC operation at a low luminosity.

Could we learn more about HERA high $Q^2$ anomaly from LEP200 and TEVATRON? R-parity violation scenario

The excess of high $Q^2$ events at HERA reported in the early 1997 by H1 and ZEUS collaborations has become the subject of extensive studies in the framework of several models related to new physics. Here we concentrate on the most promising, from our point of view, model describing HERA anomaly. We update our previous analysis and take into account new HERA statistics of the 1997 year. HERA events are considered within the R-parity broken SUSY model for a specific scenario with several non-zero couplings. R-parity broken SUSY with several non-zero couplings could explain both high $Q^2 e^+ + jets$ and $μ^+ + jets$ observed at HERA. The consequence of such a particular scenario is the excess of high $Q^2$ di- or tri-jet events at HERA. The relation of this scenario for LEP and TEVATRON colliders is considered. This study shows that if a squark resonance does take place at HERA, supersymmetry with broken R-parity can be revealed at either LEP200 or TEVATRON in the near future.

Torsion action and its possible observables

The methods of effective field theory are used to explore the theoretical and phenomenological aspects of the torsion field. Spinor action coupled to electromagnetic field and torsion possesses an additional softly broken gauge symmetry. This symmetry enables one to derive the unique form of the torsion action compatible with unitarity and renormalizability. It turns out that the antisymmetric torsion field is equivalent to an massive axial vector field. The introduction of scalars leads to serious problems which are revealed after the calculation of the leading two-loop divergences. Thus the phenomenological aspects of torsion may be studied only for the fermion-torsion systems. In this part of the paper we obtain an upper bounds for the torsion parameters using present experimental data on forward-backward Z-pole asymmetries, data on the experimental limits on four-fermion contact interaction (LEP, HERA, SLAC, SLD, CCFR) and also TEVATRON limits on the cross section of new gauge boson, which could be produced as a resonance at high energy $p\bar{p}$ collisions. The present experimental data enable one to put the limits on torsion parameters for the various range of the torsion mass. We emphasize that for the torsion mass of the order of the Planck mass no any independent theory for torsion is possible, and one must directly use string theory.

Strongly Interacting Vector Bosons at the LHC: Quartic Anomalous Couplings

We analyze the potential of the CERN Large Hadron Collider to study anomalous quartic vector--boson interactions through the production of vector--boson pairs accompanied by jets. In the framework of $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ chiral Lagrangians, we examine all effective operators of order $p^4$ that lead to new four--gauge--boson interactions but do not alter trilinear vertices. In our analyses, we perform the full tree level calculation of the processes leading to two jets plus vector--boson pairs, $W^+W^-$, $W^\pm W^\pm$, $W^\pm Z$, or $ZZ$, taking properly into account the interference between the standard model and the anomalous contributions. We obtain the bounds that can be placed on the anomalous quartic interactions and we study the strategies to distinguish the possible new couplings.

The action for the (propagating) torsion and the limits on the torsion parameters from present experimental data

Starting from the well established form of the Dirac action coupled to the electromagnetic and torsion field we find that there is some additional softly broken local symmetry associated with torsion. This symmetry fixes the form of divergences of the effective action after the spinor fields are integrated out. Then the requirement of renormalizability fixes the torsion field to be equivalent to some massive pseudovector and its action is fixed with accuracy to the values of coupling constant of torsion-spinor interaction, mass of the torsion and higher derivative terms. Implementing this action into the abelian sector of the Standard Model we establish the upper bounds on the torsion mass and coupling. In our study we used results of present experimental limits on four-fermion contact interaction (LEP, HERA, SLAC, SLD, CCFR) and TEVATRON limits on the cross section of new gauge boson, which could be produced as a resonance at high energy $p\bar{p}$ collisions.

Could we learn more about HERA high Q^2 anomaly from LEP200 and TEVATRON ?

The excess of high Q^2 events at HERA has been the subject of recent extensive studies in the framework of several models related to new physics. Here, we would like to concentrate on the most promising, from our point of view, model describing HERA anomaly. We investigate HERA events within the R-parity broken SUSY model and check its relation to LEP and TEVATRON colliders. This study shows that if a squark resonance really takes place at HERA, supersymmetry with broken R-parity can be revealed at either LEP200 or TEVATRON.

Possibility of Chargino Search at LEP II

We study the potential of the LEP200 collider for chargino production and the possibility of the determination of some fundamental SUSY parameters through the relation with this study. Total cross sections for two basic signatures of pair chargino production and for main backgrounds are calculated. The set of kinematic cuts is proposed for the effective background suppression and extraction of the signal. Calculations and the MC simulation performed give the limits on chargino and neutralino masses that could be obtained at LEP200 with $\sqrt s =$ 200 GeV.

Single top quarks at the Fermilab Tevatron

We present a calculation of the single top quark cross section for proton-antiproton interactions with sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We examine the effects of top mass, parton distribution functions, QCD scale, and collision energy, on each of the component production mechanisms, and study the kinematic distributions for standard model electroweak production. At the upgraded Tevatron with sqrt(s) = 2.0 TeV and high luminosity, it will be possible to test the nature of the Wtb coupling using single top production. We estimate the sensitivity to measure the single top cross section, and thus to directly measure V_tb and the top quark partial width. We show what happens to the V_tb measurement when an anomalous (V+A) component is added to the Wtb coupling, and how the top quark polarization affects the kinematic distributions.
