Comparative Study of Multifragmentation of Gold Nuclei Induced by Relativistic Protons, $^4$He, and $^{12}$C

Multiple emission of intermediate-mass fragments has been studied for the collisions of p, $^4$He and $^{12}$C on Au with the $4π$ setup FASA. The mean IMF multiplicities (for the events with at least one IMF) are saturating at the value of $2.2\pm0.2$ for the incident energies above 6 GeV. The observed IMF multiplicities cannot be described in a two-stage scenario, a fast cascade followed by a statistical multifragmentation. Agreement with the measured IMF multiplicities is obtained by introducing an intermediate phase and modifying empirically the excitation energies and masses of the remnants. The angular distributions and energy spectra from the p-induced collisions are in agreement with the scenario of ``thermal'' multifragmentation of a hot and diluted target spectator. In the case of $^{12}$C+Au(22.4 GeV) and $^4$He(14.6 GeV)+Au collisions, deviations from a pure thermal break-up are seen in the energy spectra of the emitted fragments, which are harder than those both from model calculations and from the measured ones for p-induced collisions. This difference is attributed to a collective flow.

On pressure versus density dependence in statistical multifragmentation models

We show that the statistical multifragmentation model with the standard parameterization of the free volume predicts a constant pressure as density approaches the normal nuclear density. This is contrary to the Raduta&Raduta result obtained by disregarding the center of mass constraint. It is demonstrated that in finite nuclear systems the partitions with small number of fragments play an important role.

Statistical properties of fragment isospin in multifragmentation

It is shown that the chemical equilibrium condition of the system can be unambiguously identified by analyzing the isospin evolution of fragments produced in nuclear multifragmentation process. As far as the chemical equilibrium is established, the isotope production can be used for finding properties of nuclear matter and fragments in the freeze-out volume, for example, via the isoscaling phenomenon.

Isoscaling in Light-Ion Induced Reactions and its Statistical Interpretation

Isotopic effects observed in fragmentation reactions induced by protons, deuterons, and alpha particles of incident energies between 660 MeV and 15.3 GeV on 112-Sn and 124-Sn targets are discussed. The exponential scaling of the yield ratios with the third component of the fragment isospin (N-Z)/2 is observed in all reactions, with scaling parameters that depend on the incident energy. Breakup temperatures for these reactions are deduced from double ratios of isotopic yields and tested for their relation with the isoscaling parameters. The quantum statistical (QSM) and the statistical multifragmentation (SMM) models are used for interpreting the results. The observed isoscaling can be understood as a consequence of a statistical origin of the emitted fragments in these reactions. The SMM analysis shows that the exponent describing the isoscaling behavior is proportional to the strength of the symmetry term of the fragment binding energy. Using this result, a symmetry-term coefficient (approximately 22.5 MeV) for fragments at breakup is deduced from the experimental data. This is close to the standard value and supports SMM assumptions for the breakup configuration. An alternative method of determining the symmetry-energy coefficient, by using isotope distribution widths, is also discussed.

Fragment Isospin as a Probe of Heavy-Ion Collisions

Isotope ratios of fragments produced at mid-rapidity in peripheral and central collisions of 114Cd ions with 92Mo and 98Mo target nuclei at E/A = 50 MeV are compared. Neutron-rich isotopes are preferentially produced in central collisions as compared to peripheral collisions. The influence of the size (A), density, N/Z, E*/A, and Eflow/A of the emitting source on the measured isotope ratios was explored by comparison with a statistical model (SMM). The mid-rapidity region associated with peripheral collisions does not appear to be neutron-enriched relative to central collisions.

Statistical evolution of fragment isospin in nuclear multifragmentation

Two instructive effects concerning fragment production at disintegration of finite nuclei are predicted with the statistical multifragmentation model: (1) a concentration of neutrons in intermediate mass fragments during the phase transition, (2) the break of the spatial symmetry of the fragment's isospin distribution, as well as of the symmetry of the fragment's emission from a statistical source, induced by the external Coulomb field.

Transition from Thermal to Rapid Expansion in Multifragmentation of Gold Induced by Light Relativistic Projectiles

Multiple emission of intermediate-mass fragments has been studied for the collisions of p, $^4$He and $^{12}$C on Au with the $4π$ setup FASA. In the case of $^{12}$C(22.4 GeV)+Au and $^4$He(14.6 GeV)+Au collisions, the deviations from a pure thermal break-up are seen in the energy spectra of the emitted fragments: the spectra are harder than calculated and than measured in p-induced collisions. This difference is attributed to a collective flow with the expansion velocity on the surface about 0.1 $c$ (for $^{12}$C+Au collisions).

Statistical evolution of isotope composition of nuclear fragments

Calculations within the statistical multifragmentation model show that the neutron content of intermediate mass fragments can increase in the region of liquid-gas phase transition in finite nuclei. The model predicts also inhomogeneous distributions of fragments and their isospin in the freeze-out volume caused by an angular momentum and external long-range Coulomb field. These effects can take place in peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies and lead to neutron-rich isotopes produced in the midrapidity kinematic region.

External Coulomb and angular momentum influence on isotope composition of nuclear fragments

The Markov chain statistical multifragmentation model predicts inhomogeneous distributions of fragments and their isospin in the freeze-out volume caused by an angular momentum and external long-range Coulomb field. These effects can take place in peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies and lead to neutron-rich isotopes produced in the midrapidity kinematical region of the reactions.

Isotopic Composition of Fragments in Nuclear Multifragmentation

The isotope yields of fragments, produced in the decay of the quasiprojectile in Au+Au peripheral collisions at 35 MeV/nucleon and those coming from the disassembly of the unique source formed in Xe+Cu central reactions at 30 MeV/nucleon, were measured. We show that the relative yields of neutron-rich isotopes increase with the excitation energy in multifragmentation reaction. In the framework of the statistical multifragmentation model which fairly well reproduces the experimental observables, this behaviour can be explained by increasing N/Z ratio of hot primary fragments, that corresponds to the statistical evolution of the decay mechanism with the excitation energy: from a compound-like decay to complete multifragmentation.

Partitioning Composite Finite Systems

We compare different analytical and numerical methods for studying the partitions of a finite system into fragments. We propose a new numerical method of exploring the partition space by generating the Markov chains of partitions based on the Metropolis algorithm. The advantages of the new method for the problems where partitions are sampled with non-trivial weights are demonstrated.

What is the Physics behind the 3He-4He Anomaly ?

We show that coalescence of nucleons emitted prior to thermalization in highly excited nuclei can explain the anomaly of kinetic energies of helium clusters. A new coalescence algorithm has been included into the statistical approach to nuclear reactions formerly used to describe intermediate mass fragment production.

Multifragmentation of charge asymmetric nuclear systems

The multifragmentation of excited spherical nuclear sources with various N/Z ratios and fixed mass number is studied within dynamical and statistical models. The dynamical model treats the multifragmentation process as a final stage of the growth of density fluctuations in unstable expanding nuclear matter. The statistical model makes a choice of the final multifragment configuration according to its statistical weight at a global thermal equilibrium. Similarities and differences in the predictions of the two models on the isotopic composition of the produced fragments are presented and the most sensitive observable characteristics are discussed.

Thermodynamical features of multifragmentation in peripheral Au + Au Collisions at 35 A.MeV

The distribution of fragments produced in events involving the multifragmentation of excited sources is studied for peripheral Au + Au reactions at 35 A.MeV. The Quasi-Projectile has been reconstructed from its de-excitation products. An isotropic emission in its rest frame has been observed, indicating that an equilibrated system has been formed. The excitation energy of the Quasi-Projectile has been determined via calorimetry. A new event by event effective thermometer is proposed based on the energy balance. A peak in the energy fluctuations is observed related to the heat capacity, suggesting that the system undergoes a liquid-gas type phase transition at an excitation energy about 5 A.MeV and a temperature 4 - 6 MeV, dependent on the freeze-out hypothesis. By analyzing different regions of the Campi-plot, the events associated with the liquid and gas phases as well as the critical region are thermodynamically characterized. The critical exponents, tau, beta, gamma, extracted from the high moments of the charge distribution are consistent with a liquid-gas type phase transition.

Particle emission following Coulomb excitation in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study nuclear reactions induced by virtual photons associated with Lorentz-boosted Coulomb fields of ultrarelativistic heavy ions. Evaporation, fission and multifragmentation mechanisms are included in a new RELDIS code, which describes the deexcitation of residual nuclei formed after single and double photon absorption in peripheral heavy-ion collisions. Partial cross sections for different dissociation channels, including the multiple neutron emission ones, are calculated and compared with data when available. Rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of nucleons, nuclear fragments and pions, produced electromagnetically, are also calculated. These results provide important information for designing large-rapidity detectors and zero-degree calorimeters at RHIC and LHC. The electromagnetic dissociation of nuclei imposes some constrains on the investigation of exotic particle production in gamma-gamma fusion reactions.

Isotopic and Microcanonical Temperatures in Nuclear Multifragmentation

A systematic comparison of different isotopic temperatures with the thermodynamical temperature of a multifragment system is made on the basis of the Statistical Multifragmentation Model. It is demonstrated that isotopic temperatures are strongly affected by the secondary decays of hot primary fragments and the population of particle-stable excited states in final fragments. The He-Li temperatures, measured recently by the ALADIN group, are reproduced fairly well both as a function of excitation energy and bound charge. Our analysis confirms the anomaly in the nuclear caloric curve.

Nuclear multifragmentation induced by electromagnetic fields of ultrarelativistic heavy ions

We study the disintegration of nuclei by strong electromagnetic fields induced by ultrarelativistic heavy ions. The proposed multi-step model includes 1) the absorption of a virtual photon by a nucleus, 2) intranuclear cascades of produced hadrons and 3) statistical decay of the excited residual nucleus. The combined model describes well existing data on projectile fragmentation at energy 200 GeV per nucleon. Electromagnetic multifragmentation of nuclei is predicted to be an important reaction mechanism at RHIC and LHC energies.

Comment on ``Phase Coexistence in Multifragmentation''

This comment on Moretto et al.PRL 76:372,1996 argues that the IMF-charge distribution may not be useful as signal for phase-transitions in nuclear multifragmentation. Fluctuations of different origin may corrupt this signal. Energy conservation is as important as charge conservation. The caloric equation of state is more safe.
