Bright bichromatic entanglement and quantum dynamics of sum frequency generation

We investigate the quantum properties of the well-known process of sum frequency generation, showing that it is potentially a very useful source of non-classical states of the electromagnetic field, some of which are not possible with the more common techniques. We show that it can produce quadrature squeezed light, bright bichromatic entangled states and symmetric and asymmetric demonstrations of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox. We also show that the semiclassical equations totally fail to describe the mean-field dynamics when the cavity is strongly pumped.

Tripartite entanglement and threshold properties of coupled intracavity downconversion and sum-frequency generation

The process of cascaded downconversion and sum-frequency generation inside an optical cavity has been predicted to be a potential source of three-mode continuous-variable entanglement. When the cavity is pumped by two fields, the threshold properties have been analysed, showing that these are more complicated than in well-known processes such as optical parametric oscillation. When there is only a single pumping field, the entanglement properties have been calculated using a linearised fluctuation analysis, but without any consideration of the threshold properties or critical operating points of the system. In this work we extend this analysis to demonstrate that the singly pumped system demonstrates a rich range of threshold behaviour when quantisation of the pump field is taken into account and that asymmetric polychromatic entanglement is available over a wide range of operational parameters.

Quantum statistical measurements of an atom laser beam

We describe a scheme, operating in a manner analogous to a reversed Raman output coupler, for measuring the phase-sensitive quadrature statistics of an atom laser beam. This scheme allows for the transferral of the atomic field statistics to an optical field, for which the quantum statistics may then be measured using the well-developed technology of optical homodyne measurement.

Quantum depletion of collapsing Bose-Einstein condensates

We perform the first numerical three-dimensional studies of quantum field effects in the Bosenova experiment on collapsing condensates by E. Donley et al. [Nature 415, 39 (2002)] using the exact experimental geometry. In a stochastic truncated Wigner simulation of the collapse, the collapse times are larger than the experimentally measured values. We find that a finite temperature initial state leads to an increased creation rate of uncondensed atoms, but not to a reduction of the collapse time. A comparison of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and Wigner methods for the more tractable spherical trap shows excellent agreement between the uncondensed populations. We conclude that the discrepancy between the experimental and theoretical values of the collapse time cannot be explained by Gaussian quantum fluctuations or finite temperature effects.

Teleportation of massive particles without shared entanglement

We propose a method for quantum state transfer from one atom laser beam to another via an intermediate optical field, using Raman incoupling and outcoupling techniques. Our proposal utilises existing experimental technologies to teleport macroscopic matter waves over potentially large distances without shared entanglement.

The Quantum de Laval Nozzle: stability and quantum dynamics of sonic horizons in a toroidally trapped Bose gas containing a superflow

We study an experimentally realizable system containing stable black hole-white hole acoustic horizons in toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensates - the quantum de Laval nozzle. We numerically obtain stationary flow configurations and assess their stability using Bogoliubov theory, finding both in hydrodynamic and non-hydrodynamic regimes there exist dynamically unstable regions associated with the creation of positive and negative energy quasiparticle pairs in analogy with the gravitational Hawking effect. The dynamical instability takes the form of a two mode squeezing interaction between resonant pairs of Bogoliubov modes. We study the evolution of dynamically unstable flows using the truncated Wigner method, which confirms the two mode squeezed state picture of the analogue Hawking effect for low winding number.

Measuring the quantum statistics of an atom laser beam

We propose and analyse a scheme for measuring the quadrature statistics of an atom laser beam using extant optical homodyning and Raman atom laser techniques. Reversal of the normal Raman atom laser outcoupling scheme is used to map the quantum statistics of an incoupled beam to an optical probe beam. A multimode model of the spatial propagation dynamics shows that the Raman incoupler gives a clear signal of de Broglie wave quadrature squeezing for both pulsed and continuous inputs. Finally, we show that experimental realisations of the scheme may be tested with existing methods via measurements of Glauber's intensity correlation function.

Tripartite entanglement from interlinked $χ^{(2)}$ parametric interactions

We examine the tripartite entanglement properties of an optical system using interlinked $χ^{(2)}$ interactions, recently studied experimentally in terms of its phase-matching properties by Bondani et al [M. Bondani, A. Allevi, E. Gevinti, A. Agliati, and A. Andreoni, arXiv:quant-ph/0604002.]. We show that the system does produce output modes which are genuinely tripartite entangled and that detection of this entanglement depends crucially on the correlation functions which are measured, with a three-mode Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen inequality being the most sensitive.

The stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation: III

A generalised stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing a partially condensed trapped Bose gas with rotating thermal component is presented. We elucidate the manner in which the rotation changes the role of the high energy cutoff and introduces centrifugal effects in the classical field evolution. The rotation of the cloud means that Bose-enhanced collision processes occur preferentially into states with the same angular momentum as the thermal cloud, thus favouring vortex formation. We use the formalism to obtain a first principles theory of vortex lattice formation caused by thermodynamic instability.

Three-body recombination of ultracold Bose gases using the truncated Wigner method

We apply the truncated Wigner method to the process of three-body recombination in ultracold Bose gases. We find that within the validity regime of the Wigner truncation for two-body scattering, three-body recombination can be treated using a set of coupled stochastic differential equations that include diffusion terms, and can be simulated using known numerical methods. As an example we investigate the behaviour of a simple homogeneous Bose gas.

Continuous variable tripartite entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations from triple nonlinearities

We compare theoretically the tripartite entanglement available from the use of three concurrent $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearities and three independent squeezed states mixed on beamsplitters, using the van Loock-Furusawa inequalities. We also define three-mode generalisations of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox which are an alternative for demonstrating the inseparability of the density matrix.

Diffusive instability of a vortex in a rotating Bose gas

The dissipative dynamics of a vortex in a finite temperature trapped Bose-Einstein condensate are shown to be governed by a {\em diffusive instability}. In the weakly interacting regime we find a cross-over from instability to metastability of the vortex, determined only by the relative rotation rate of the vortex and thermal cloud. Even in the thermodynamically stable regime there is a finite lifetime arising from diffusive instability. We find the mean exit time for the vortex from the condensate, and show that near the critical frequency for thermodynamic stability the lifetime has a universal form which is independent of the condensate size and the vortex precession frequency. In the thermodynamically stable regime the steady-state two-time position correlation predicts `thermal bunching', giving an increased probability of positional coincidence for short times.

Bright tripartite entanglement in triply concurrent parametric oscillation

We show that a novel optical parametric oscillator, based on concurrent $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearities, can produce, above threshold, bright output beams of macroscopic intensities which exhibit strong tripartite continuous-variable entanglement. We also show that there are {\em two} ways that the system can exhibit a new three-mode form of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox, and calculate the extra-cavity fluctuation spectra that may be measured to verify our predictions.

Phase-space analysis of bosonic spontaneous emission

We present phase-space techniques for the modelling of spontaneous emission in two-level bosonic atoms. The positive-P representation is shown to give a full and complete description and can be further developed to give exact treatments of the interaction of degenerate bosons with the electromagnetic field in a given experimental situation. The Wigner representation, even when truncated at second order, is shown to need a doubling of the phase-space to allow for a positive-definite diffusion matrix in the appropriate Fokker-Planck equation and still fails to agree with the full quantum results of the positive-P representation. We show that quantum statistics and correlations between the ground and excited states affect the dynamics of the emission process, so that it is in general non-exponential.

Properties of the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation: Projected Ehrenfest relations and the optimal plane wave basis

We investigate the properties of the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing a condensate interacting with a stationary thermal cloud derived by Gardiner and coworkers. We find the appropriate Ehrenfest relations for the SGPE, including the effect of growth noise and projector terms arising from the energy cutoff. This is carried out in the high temperature regime appropriate for the SGPE, which simplifies the action of the projectors. The validity condition for neglecting the projector terms in the Ehrenfest relations is found to be more stringent than the usual condition of validity of the truncated Wigner method or classical field method -- which is that all modes are highly occupied. In addition it is required that the overlap of the nonlinear term with the lowest energy eigenstate of the non-condensate band is small. We show how to use the Ehrenfest relations along with the corrections generated by the projector to monitor dynamical artifacts arising from the cutoff. We also investigate the effect of using different bases to describe a harmonically trapped BEC at finite temperature by comparing the condensate fraction found using the plane wave and single particle bases. We show that the equilibrium properties are strongly dependent on the choice of basis. There is thus an optimal choice of plane wave basis for a given cut-off energy and we show that this basis gives the best reproduction of the single particle spectrum, the condensate fraction and the position and momentum densities.

Stationary quantum statistics of a non-Markovian atom laser

We present a steady state analysis of a quantum-mechanical model of an atom laser. A single-mode atomic trap coupled to a continuum of external modes is driven by a saturable pumping mechanism. In the dilute flux regime, where atom-atom interactions are negligible in the output, we have been able to solve this model without making the Born-Markov approximation. The more exact treatment has a different effective damping rate and occupation of the lasing mode, as well as a shifted frequency and linewidth of the output. We examine gravitational damping numerically, finding linewidths and frequency shifts for a range of pumping rates. We treat mean field damping analytically, finding a memory function for the Thomas-Fermi regime. The occupation and linewidth are found to have a nonlinear scaling behavior which has implications for the stability of atom lasers.

Theory of the Ramsey spectroscopy and anomalous segregation in ultra-cold rubidium

The recent anomalous segregation experiment of Lewandowski et al. (PRL, 88, 070403, 2002) shows dramatic, rapid internal state segregation for two hyperfine levels of rubidium. We simulate an effective one dimensional model of the system for experimental parameters and find reasonable agreement with the data. The Ramsey frequency is found to be insensitive to the decoherence of the superposition, and is only equivalent to the interaction energy shift for a pure superposition. A Quantum Boltzmann equation describing collisions is derived using Quantum Kinetic Theory, taking into account the different scattering lengths of the internal states. As spin-wave experiments are likely to be attempted at lower temperatures we examine the effect of degeneracy on decoherence by considering the recent experiment of Lewandowski et al. where degeneracy is around 10%. We also find that the segregation effect is only possible when transport terms are included in the equations of motion, and that the interactions only directly alter the momentum distributions of the states. The segregation or spin wave effect is thus entirely due to coherent atomic motion as foreseen in the experimental report
