The Large Hadron-Electron Collider at the HL-LHC

The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies.

Quasi-normal modes and absorption probabilities of spin-3/2 fields in $D$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetimes

In this paper we consider spin-3/2 fields in a $D$-dimensional Reissner-Nordström black hole spacetime. As these spacetimes are not Ricci-flat, it is necessary to modify the covariant derivative to the supercovariant derivative, by including terms related to the background electromagnetic fields, so as to maintain the gauge symmetry. Using this supercovariant derivative we arrive at the corresponding Rarita-Schwinger equation in a charged black hole background. As in our previous works, we exploit the spherically symmetry of the spacetime and use the eigenspinor-vectors on an $N$-sphere to derive the radial equations for both non-transverse-traceless (non-TT) modes and TT modes. We then determine the quasi-normal mode and absorption probabilities of the associated gauge-invariant variables using the WKB approximation and the asymptotic iteration method. We then concentrate on how these quantities change with the charge of the black hole, especially when they reach the extremal limits.

Spin-3/2 fields in $D$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole space-times

In previous works we have studied spin-3/2 fields near 4-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. The techniques we developed in that case have now been extended here to show that it is possible to determine the potential of spin-3/2 fields near $D$-dimensional black holes by exploiting the radial symmetry of the system. This removes the need to use the Newman-Penrose formalism, which is difficult to extend to $D$-dimensional space-times. In this paper we will derive a general $D$-dimensional gauge invariant effective potential for spin-3/2 fields near black hole systems. We then use this potential to determine the quasi-normal modes and absorption probabilities of spin-3/2 fields near a $D$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole.

Absorption probabilities associated with spin-3/2 particles near $N$-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes

In June 2015 the Large Hadron Collider was able to produce collisions with an energy of 13TeV, where collisions at these energy levels may allow for the formation of higher dimensional black holes. In order to detect these higher dimensional black holes we require an understanding of their emission spectra. One way of determining this is by looking at the absorption probabilities associated with the black hole. In this proceedings we will look at the absorption probability for spin-3/2 particles near $N$-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. We will show how the Unruh method is used to determine these probabilities for low energy particles. We then use the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation in order to determine these absorption probabilities for the entire possible energy range.

The evolution of gauge couplings and the Weinberg angle in 5 dimensions for an SU(3) gauge group

We test in a simplified 5-dimensional model with SU(3) gauge symmetry, the evolution equations of the gauge couplings of a model containing bulk fields, gauge fields and one pair of fermions. In this model we assume that the fermion doublet and two singlet fields are located at fixed points of the extra-dimension compactified on an $S^{1}/Z_{2}$ orbifold. The gauge coupling evolution is derived at one-loop in 5-dimensions, for the gauge group $G = SU(3)$, and used to test the impact on lower energy observables, in particular the Weinberg angle. The gauge bosons and the Higgs field arise from the gauge bosons in 5 dimensions, as in a gauge-Higgs model. The model is used as a testing ground as it is not a complete and realistic model for the electroweak interactions.

Two-loop renormalisation in UED models

The evolution equations of the gauge and Yukawa couplings are derived for the two-loop renormalisation group equations in a five-dimensional SM compactified on a $S^1/Z_2$ to yield standard four space-time dimensions. Different possibilities can be discussed, however, we shall consider the limiting case in which all matter fields are localised on the brane. We will compare our two-loop results to the results found at one-loop level, and investigate the evolution of $\sin^2 θ_W$ in this scenario also.

Gravitino fields in Schwarzschild black hole spacetimes

The analysis of gravitino fields in curved spacetimes is usually carried out using the Newman-Penrose formalism. In this paper we consider a more direct approach with eigenspinor-vectors on spheres, to separate out the angular parts of the fields in a Schwarzschild background. The radial equations of the corresponding gauge invariant variable obtained are shown to be the same as in the Newman-Penrose formalism. These equations are then applied to the evaluation of the quasinormal mode frequencies, as well as the absorption probabilities of the gravitino field scattering in this background.

Evolution of Quark Masses and Flavour Mixings in the 2UED

The evolution equations of the Yukawa couplings and quark mixings are performed for the one-loop renormalisation group equations in six-dimensional models compactified in different possible ways to yield standard four space-time dimensions. Different possibilities for the matter fields are discussed, that is where they are in the bulk or localised to the brane. These two possibilities give rise to quite similar behaviours when studying the evolution of the Yukawa couplings and mass ratios. We find that for both scenarios, valid up to the unification scale, significant corrections are observed.

Evolution of Yukawa couplings and quark flavour mixings in 2UED models

The evolution equations of the Yukawa couplings and quark mixings are derived for the one-loop renormalization group equations in the two Universal Extra Dimension Models (UED), that is six-dimensional models, compactified in different possible ways to yield standard four space-time dimension. Different possibilities for the matter fields are discussed, such as the case of bulk propagating or localised brane fields. We discuss in both cases the evolution of the Yukawa couplings, the Jarlskog parameter and the CKM matrix elements, and we find that, for both scenarios, as we run up to the unification scale, significant renormalization group corrections are present. We also discuss the results of different observables of the five-dimensional UED model in comparison with these six-dimensional models and the model dependence of the results.

Evolution of Yukawa Couplings and Quark Flavour Mixings in the 5D MSSM

The evolution equations of the Yukawa couplings and quark mixings are derived for the one-loop renormalization group equations in the 5D Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model on an {$S^1 / Z_2$} orbifold. Different possibilities for the matter fields are discussed such as the cases of bulk propagating or brane localised fields. We discuss in both cases the evolution of the mass ratios and the implications for the mixing angles.

Renormalisation running of masses and mixings in UED models

We review the Universal Extra-Dimensional Model compactified on a S1/Z2 orbifold, and the renormalisation group evolution of quark and lepton masses, mixing angles and phases both in the UED extension of the Standard Model and of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We consider two typical scenarios: all matter fields propagating in the bulk, and matter fields constrained to the brane. The resulting renormalisation group evolution equations in these scenarios are compared with the existing results in the literature, together with their implications.

Improved vacuum stability in a five dimensional model

In this paper we study the renormalization effects of the quark flavor mixings and the Higgs self- coupling in a five dimensional model where the boson fields are propagating in the bulk whilst the matter fields are localized to the brane. We first explore the evolution behaviors for the Cabibbo- Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix in this scenario. Then, in light of the recent LHC bounds on the Higgs mass, we find that the Higgs self-coupling evolution has an improved vacuum stability condition, which is in contrast with that of Standard Model and the Universal Extra Dimension scenario, where the theory has a much lower ultraviolet cut-off.

Inhomogeneous longitudinal electric field-induced anomalous Hall conductivity in a ferromagnetic two-dimensional electron gas

It is known that the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) in a disordered two dimensional electron system with Rashba spin-orbit interaction and finite ferromagnetic spin-exchange energy is zero in the metallic weak-scattering regime because of the exact cancellation of the bare-bubble contribution by the vertex correction. We study the effect of inhomogeneous longitudinal electric field on the AHC in such a system. We predict that AHC increases from zero (at zero wavenumber), forms a peak, and then decreases as the wavenumber for the variation of electric field increases. The peak-value of AHC is as high as the bare-buble contribution. We find that the wave number, q, at which the peaks occur is the inverse of the geometric mean of the mean free path of an electron and the spin-exchange length scale. Although the Rashba energy is responsible for the peak-value of AHC, the peak position is independent of it.

A New Approach to Black Hole Quasinormal Modes: A Review of the Asymptotic Iteration Method

We discuss an approach to obtaining black hole quasinormal modes (QNMs) using the asymptotic iteration method (AIM), initially developed to solve second order ordinary differential equations. We introduce the standard version of this method and present an improvement more suitable for numerical implementation. We demonstrate that the AIM can be used to find radial QNMs for Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) and Kerr black holes in a unified way. An advantage of the AIM over the standard continued fraction method (CFM) is that for differential equations with more than three regular singular points Gaussian eliminations are not required. However, the convergence of the AIM depends on the location of the radial or angular position, choosing the best such position in general remains an open problem. This review presents for the first time the spin 0, 1/2 & 2 QNMs of a Kerr black hole and the gravitational and electromagnetic QNMs of the RN black hole calculated via the AIM, and confirms results previously obtained using the CFM. We also presents some new results comparing the AIM to the WKB method. Finally we emphasize that the AIM is well suited to higher dimensional generalizations and we give an example of doubly rotating black holes.

Scaling of the CKM Matrix in the 5D MSSM

We discuss a five-dimensional Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model compactified on a $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold, looking at, in particular, the one-loop evolution equations of the Yukawa couplings for the quark sector and various flavor observables. Different possibilities for the matter fields are discussed, that is, where they are in the bulk or localised to the brane. The two possibilities give rise to quite different behaviours. By studying the implications of the evolution with the renormalisation group of the Yukawa couplings and of the flavor observables we find that, for a theory that is valid up to the unification scale, the case where fields are localised to the brane, with a large $\tanβ$, would be more easily distinguishable from other scenarios.

Fermion Quasi-normal modes of the Kerr Black-Hole

In this paper we study the fermion quasi-normal modes of a 4-dimensional rotating black-hole using the WKB(J) (to third and sixth order) and the AIM semi-analytic methods in the massless Dirac fermion sector. These semi-analytic approximations are computed in a pedagogical manner with comparisons made to the numerical values of the quasi-normal mode frequencies presented in the literature. It was found that The WKB(J) method and AIM show good agreement with direct numerical solutions for low values of the overtone number $n$ and angular quantum number l.

Scalar spheroidal harmonics in five dimensional Kerr-(A)dS

We derive expressions for the general five-dimensional metric for Kerr-(A)dS black holes. The Klein-Gordon equation is explicitly separated and we show that the angular part of the wave equation leads to just one spheroidal wave equation, which is also that for charged five-dimensional Kerr-(A)dS black holes. We present results for the perturbative expansion of the angular eigenvalue in powers of the rotation parameters up to 6th order and compare numerically with the continued fraction method.
