Stability and structure of two coupled boson systems in an external field

The lowest adiabatic potential expressed in hyperspherical coordinates is estimated for two boson systems in an external harmonic trap. Corresponding conditions for stability are investigated and the related structures are extracted for zero-range interactions. Strong repulsion between non-identical particles leads to two new features, respectively when identical particles attract or repel each other. For repulsion new stable structures arise with displaced center of masses. For attraction the mean-field stability region is restricted due to motion of the center of masses.

Stability and correlations in dilute two-dimensional boson systems

The hyperspherical adiabatic expansion method is used to describe correlations in a symmetric boson system rigorously confined to two spatial dimensions. The hyperangular eigenvalue equation turns out to be almost independent of the hyperradius, whereas the solutions are strongly varying with the strength of the attractive two-body potentials. Instability is encountered in hyperangular, hyperradial, and mean-field equations for almost identical strengths inversely proportional to the particle number. The derived conditions for stability are similar to mean-field conditions and closely related to the possible occurrence of the Thomas and Efimov effects. Renormalization in mean-field calculations for two spatial dimensions is probably not needed.

Stability, effective dimensions, and interactions for bosons in deformed fields

The hyperspherical adiabatic method is used to derive stability criteria for Bose-Einstein condensates in deformed external fields. An analytical approximation is obtained. For constant volume the highest stability is found for spherical traps. Analytical approximations to the stability criterion with and without zero point motion are derived. Extreme geometries of the field effectively confine the system to dimensions lower than three. As a function of deformation we compute the dimension to vary continuously between one and three. We derive a dimension-dependent effective radial Hamiltonian and investigate one choice of an effective interaction in the deformed case.

Three-body structure of the low-lying $^{17}$Ne-states

The Borromean nucleus $^{17}$Ne ($^{15}$O$ + p + p$) is investigated by using the hyperspheric adiabatic expansion for a a three-body system. The measured size of $^{15}$O and the low-lying resonances of $^{16}$F ($^{15}$O$ + p$) are first used as constraints to determine both central and spin-dependent two-body interactions. Then, the ground state structure of $^{17}$Ne is found to be an almost equal mixture of $s^2$ and $d^2$ proton-$^{15}$O relative states, the two lowest excited states have about 80% of $sd$-mixed components, and for the next two excited three-body states the proton-$^{15}$O relative s-states do not contribute. The spatial extension is as in ordinary nuclei. The widths of the resonances are estimated by the WKB transmission through the adiabatic potentials and found in agreement with the established experimental limits. We compare with experimental information and previous works.

Three-body Thomas-Ehrman shifts of analog states of $^{17}$Ne and $^{17}$N

The lowest-lying states of the Borromean nucleus $^{17}$Ne ($^{15}$O+$p$ + $p$) and its mirror nucleus $^{17}$N ($^{15}$N+$n$ + $n$) are compared by using the hyperspheric adiabatic expansion. Three-body resonances are computed by use of the complex scaling method. The measured size of $^{15}$O and the low-lying resonances of $^{16}$F ($^{15}$O+$p$) are first used as constraints to determine both central and spin-dependent two-body interactions. The interaction obtained reproduces relatively accurately both experimental three-body spectra. The Thomas-Ehrman shifts, involving excitation energy differences, are computed and found to be less than 3% of the total Coulomb energy shift for all states.

Structure of boson systems beyond the mean-field

We investigate systems of identical bosons with the focus on two-body correlations. We use the hyperspherical adiabatic method and a decomposition of the wave function in two-body amplitudes. An analytic parametrization is used for the adiabatic effective radial potential. We discuss the structure of a condensate for arbitrary scattering length. Stability and time scales for various decay processes are estimated. The previously predicted Efimov-like states are found to be very narrow. We discuss the validity conditions and formal connections between the zero- and finite-range mean-field approximations, Faddeev-Yakubovskii formulation, Jastrow ansatz, and the present method. We compare numerical results from present work with mean-field calculations and discuss qualitatively the connection with measurements.

Condensates and correlated boson systems

We study two-body correlations in a many-boson system with a hyperspherical approach, where we can use arbitrary scattering length and include two-body bound states. As a special application we look on Bose-Einstein condensation and calculate the stability criterium in a comparison with the experimental criterium and the theoretical criterium from the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Correlated N-boson systems for arbitrary scattering length

We investigate systems of identical bosons with the focus on two-body correlations and attractive finite-range potentials. We use a hyperspherical adiabatic method and apply a Faddeev type of decomposition of the wave function. We discuss the structure of a condensate as function of particle number and scattering length. We establish universal scaling relations for the critical effective radial potentials for distances where the average distance between particle pairs is larger than the interaction range. The correlations in the wave function restore the large distance mean-field behaviour with the correct two-body interaction. We discuss various processes limiting the stability of condensates. With correlations we confirm that macroscopic tunneling dominates when the trap length is about half of the particle number times the scattering length.

Complex scaling of the hyper-spheric coordinates and Faddeev equations

We implement complex scaling of Faddeev equations using hyper-spheric coordinates and adiabatic expansion. Complex scaling of coordinates allows convenient calculations of three-body resonances. We derive the necessary equations and investigate the adiabatic spectrum at large distances. We illustrate the viability of the implementation by calculations of several three-body resonances: a $0^+$ resonance in a model benchmark system of three identical bosons; the $2^+$ resonance in the $^6$He nucleus within the $α+n+n$ model; and the two $0^+$ resonances in $^{12}$C within the three-$α$ model.

Spin-dependent effective interactions for halo nuclei

We discuss the spin-dependence of the effective two-body interactions appropriate for three-body computations. The only reasonable choice seems to be the fine and hyperfine interactions known for atomic electrons interacting with the nucleus. One exception is the nucleon-nucleon interaction imposing a different type of symmetry. We use the two-neutron halo nucleus 11Li as illustration. We demonstrate that models with the wrong spin-dependence are basically without predictive power. The Pauli forbidden core and valence states must be consistently treated.

Efimov states in asymmetric systems

The conditions for occurrence of the Efimov effect is briefly described using hyperspherical coordinates. The strength of the effective hyperradial $ρ^{-2}$ potential appearing for two or three large scattering lengths is computed and discussed as function of two independent mass ratios of the three constituent particles. The effect is by far most pronounced for asymmetric systems with three very different masses. One Efimov state may by chance appear in nuclei. Many states could be present for systems with one electron and two neutral atoms or molecules. Estimates of the number of states and their sizes and energies are given.

Classification of three-body quantum halos

The different kinds of behaviour of three-body systems in the weak binding limit are classified with specific attention to the transition from a true three-body system to an effective two-body system. For weakly bound Borromean systems approaching the limit of binding we show that the size-binding energy relation is an almost universal function of the three s-wave scattering lengths measured in units of a hyperradial scaling parameter defined as a mass weighted average of two-body equivalent square well radii. We explain why three-body halos follow this curve and why systems appearing above reveal two-body substructures. Three-body quantum halos 2-3 times larger than the limit set by zero hypermoment are possible.

Two-body correlations in N-body boson systems

We formulate a method to study two-body correlations in a system of N identical bosons interacting via central two-body potentials. We use the adiabatic hyperspherical approach and assume a Faddeev-like decomposition of the wave function. For a fixed hyperradius we derive variationally an optimal integro-differential equation for hyperangular eigenvalue and wave function. This equation reduces substantially by assuming the interaction range much smaller than the size of the N-body system. At most one-dimensional integrals then remain. We view a Bose-Einstein condensate pictorially as a structure in the landscape of the potential given as a function of the one-dimensional hyperradial coordinate. The quantum states of the condensate can be located in one of the two potential minima. We derive and discuss properties of the solutions and illustrate with numerical results. The correlations lower the interaction energy substantially. The new multi-body Efimov states are solutions independent of details of the two-body potential. We compare with mean-field results and available experimental data.

Dipole excited states in $^{11}$Li with complex scaling

The 1$^-$ excitations of the three--body halo nucleus $^{11}$Li are investigated. We use adiabatic hyperspherical expansion and solve the Faddeev equations in coordinate space. The method of complex scaling is used to compute the resonance states. The Pauli forbidden states occupied by core neutrons are excluded by constructing corresponding complex scaled phase equivalent two-body potentials. We use a recently derived neutron--core interaction consistent with known structure and reaction properties of $^{10}$Li and $^{11}$Li. The computed dipole excited states with $J^π=1/2^+$, $J^π=3/2^+$, and $J^π=5/2^+$ have energies ranging from 0.6 MeV to 1.0 MeV and widths between 0.15 MeV and 0.65 MeV. We investigate the dependence of the complex energies of these states on the $^{10}$Li spectrum. The finite spin 3/2 of the core and the resulting core-neutron spin-spin interaction are important. The connection with Coulomb dissociation experiments is discussed and a need for better measurements is pointed out.

Correlated Trapped Bosons and the Many-Body Efimov Effect

We study two-body correlations in systems of identical bosons. We use a Faddeev type of decomposition of the wave function where all pairs of particles are treated equally. We focus on a new multi-particle Efimov effect at large scattering length, where infinitely many loosely bound many-body states appear. A confining external trap only allows a finite number of such spatially extended negative energy states inside the trap. The stability of a Bose condensate is determined by the decay into these model independent intermediate states which in turn decay into dimers.

Two-body correlations in Bose condensates

We formulate a method to study two-body correlations in a condensate of N identical bosons. We use the adiabatic hyperspheric approach and assume a Faddeev like decomposition of the wave function. We derive for a fixed hyperradius an integro-differential equation for the angular eigenvalue and wave function. We discuss properties of the solutions and illustrate with numerical results. The interaction energy is for N~20 five times smaller than that of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

The $^{10}$Li spectrum and the $^{11}$Li properties

The neutron--$^9$Li interaction and the corresponding low-energy $^{10}$Li spectrum are decisive for the properties of $^{11}$Li described as a three-body system (n+n+$^{9}$Li). We compute structure and breakup properties of $^{11}$Li as function of this interaction. The hyperfine structure due to the spin 3/2 of both $^{9}$Li and $^{11}$Li is needed and treated with special care. We use the hyperspherical adiabatic expansion of the Faddeev equations for the structure and the participant-spectator model for the breakup reactions of $^{11}$Li. We use established experimental constraints of both $^{11}$Li (binding energy, size and differential breakup cross sections) and of $^{10}$Li (a virtual s-state below 50 keV and a $p$-resonance around 0.54 MeV).Another $p$-resonance must then be present below 0.54 MeV and another $s$-level must be present between about 0.5 MeV and 1 MeV depending on unknown spin assignments. All established facts are in agreement with our predictions obtained within the same consistent model.

Regularized zero-range model and an application to the triton and the hypertriton

We examine the regularized zero-range model in an application to three-fermion systems -- the triton and the hypertriton. We consider bound states and low-energy neutron-deuteron and lambda-deuteron scattering. The model is shown to provide an adequate quantitative description of these system on a par with finite-range potential models. The well known correlation between the doublet $nd$ scattering length and the triton binding energy (Phillips line) finds a natural explanation within the model.
