An effective two-body model for spectra of clusters of ${}^2$H, ${}^3$H, ${}^3$He, and $^4$He with $^4$He, and $^2$H-$^4$He scattering

Four light-mass nuclei are considered by an effective two-body clusterisation method; $^6$Li as $^2$H$+^4$He, $^7$Li as $^3$H$+^4$He, $^7$Be as $^3$He$+^4$He, and $^8$Be as $^4$He$+^4$He. The low-energy spectrum of each is determined from single-channel Lippmann-Schwinger equations, as are low-energy elastic scattering cross sections for the $^2$H$+^4$He system. These are presented at many angles and energies for which there are data. While some of these systems may be more fully described by many-body theories, this work establishes that a large amount of data may be explained by these two-body clusterisations.

Extrapolation of scattering data to the negative-energy region

Explicit analytic expressions are derived for the effective-range function for the case when the interaction is represented by a sum of the short-range square-well and long-range Coulomb potentials. These expressions are then transformed into forms convenient for extrapolating to the negative-energy region and obtaining the information about bound-state properties. Alternative ways of extrapolation are discussed. Analytic properties of separate terms entering these expressions for the effective-range function and the partial-wave scattering amplitude are investigated.

Pigmy resonances, transfer, and separable potentials

In this contribution we make a short review of recent progress on topics of current interest in nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics. In particular, we discuss a re-analysis of the extraction of the dipole response of the pigmy resonance in $^{68}$Ni based on a continuum discretized coupled-channels calculation in relativistic Coulomb excitation experiments. We also discuss the forthcoming progresses made by our group on the Alt-Sandhas-Grassberber approach to (d,p) reactions and future expectations. The role of separable potentials in solving such equations with a test case based on applications of such potentials to phase-shift analysis is also presented.

Solving close-coupling equations in momentum space without singularities for charged targets

The analytical treatment of the Greens function in the convergent close-coupling method [Bray et al. Comp. Phys. Comm. 203 147 (2016)] has been extended to charged targets. Furthermore, we show that this approach allows for calculation of cross sections at zero channel energy. For neutral targets this means the electron scattering length may be obtained from a single calculation with zero incident energy. For charged targets the non-zero excitation cross sections at thresholds can also be calculated by simply setting the incident energy to the exact threshold value. These features are demonstrated by considering electron scattering on H and He+.

Recent progress in the description of positron scattering from atoms using the Convergent Close-Coupling Theory

Much progress in the theory of positron scattering on atoms has been made in the ten years since the review of Surko, Gribakin and Buckman [J. Phys. B 38, R57 (2005)]. We review this progress for few-electron targets with a particular emphasis on the two-centre convergent close-coupling and other theories which explicitly treat positronium (Ps) formation. While substantial progress has been made for Ps formation in positron scattering on few-electron targets, considerable theoretical development is still required for multielectron atomic and molecular targets.

Theoretical study of the $α+d$ $\rightarrow$ $^6$Li + $γ$ astrophysical capture process in a three-body model

The astrophysical capture process $α+d$ $\rightarrow$ $^6$Li + $γ$ is studied in a three-body model. The initial state is factorized into the deuteron bound state and the $α+d$ scattering state. The final nucleus $^6$Li(1+) is described as a three-body bound state $α+n+p$ in the hyperspherical Lagrange-mesh method. The contribution of the E1 transition operator from the initial isosinglet states to the isotriplet components of the final state is estimated to be negligible. An estimation of the forbidden E1 transition to the isosinglet components of the final state is comparable with the corresponding results of the two-body model. However, the contribution of the E2 transition operator is found to be much smaller than the corresponding estimations of the two-body model. The three-body model perfectly matches the new experimental data of the LUNA collaboration with the spectroscopic factor 2.586 estimated from the bound-state wave functions of $^6$Li and deuteron.

Structure of $^{23}$Al from a multi-channel algebraic scattering model based on mirror symmetry

The proton-rich nucleus $^{23}$Al has a ground state just 123 keV below the proton drip-line, and as a result comparatively little is known experimentally about its properties, as with many such nuclei. Theoretical investigations have tended to model exclusively the ground and first one to three excited states known. In this paper, we theoretically model most of the known spectrum, and predict what states may as yet be unobserved. We use the multichannel algebraic scattering (MCAS) method to describe states as resonances of a valence proton coupled to a $^{22}$Mg rotor core. Six states with low-excitation energies and defined $J^π$ are matched, and we make the first prediction of the properties of four others and propound the possible existence of several more.

Importance of resonance widths in low-energy scattering of weakly-bound light-mass nuclei

What effect do particle-emitting resonances have on the scattering cross section? What physical considerations are necessary when modelling these resonances? These questions are important when theoretically describing scattering experiments with radioactive ion beams which investigate the frontiers of the table of nuclides, far from stability. Herein, a novel method is developed that describes resonant nuclear scattering from which centroids and widths in the compound nucleus are obtained when one of the interacting bodies has particle unstable resonances. The method gives cross sections without unphysical behavior that is found if simple Lorentzian forms are used to describe resonant target states. The resultant cross sections differ significantly from those obtained when the states in the coupled channel calculations are taken to have zero width, and compound-system resonances are better matched to observed values.

Indirect methods in nuclear astrophysics

We discuss recent developments in indirect methods used in nuclear astrophysics to determine the capture cross sections and subsequent rates of various stellar burning processes, when it is difficult to perform the corresponding direct measurements. We discuss in brief, the basic concepts of Asymptotic Normalization Coefficients, the Trojan Horse Method, the Coulomb Dissociation Method, (d,p), and charge-exchange reactions.

Surface-integral formalism of deuteron stripping

The purpose of this paper is to develop an alternative theory of deuteron stripping to resonance states based on the surface integral formalism of Kadyrov et al. [Ann. Phys. 324, 1516 (2009)] and continuum-discretized coupled channels (CDCC). First we demonstrate how the surface integral formalism works in the three-body model and then we consider a more realistic problem in which a composite structure of target nuclei is taken via optical potentials. We explore different choices of channel wave functions and transition operators and show that a conventional CDCC volume matrix element can be written in terms of a surface-integral matrix element, which is peripheral, and an auxiliary matrix element, which determines the contribution of the nuclear interior over the variable $r_{nA}$. This auxiliary matrix element appears due to the inconsistency in treating of the $n-A$ potential: this potential should be real in the final state to support bound states or resonance scattering and complex in the initial state to describe $n-A$ scattering. Our main result is formulation of the theory of the stripping to resonance states using the prior form of the surface integral formalism and CDCC method. It is demonstrated that the conventional CDCC volume matrix element coincides with the surface matrix element, which converges for the stripping to the resonance state. Also the surface representation (over the variable $r_{nA}$ of the stripping matrix element enhances the peripheral part of the amplitude although the internal contribution doesn't disappear and increases with increase of the deuteron energy. We present calculations corroborating our findings for both stripping to the bound state and the resonance.

Unitary correlation in nuclear reaction theory

We prove that the amplitudes for the (d,p), (d,pn) and (e,e'p) reactions determining the asymptotic behavior of the exact scattering wave functions in the corresponding channels are invariant under unitary correlation operators while the spectroscopic factors are not. Moreover, the exact reaction amplitudes are not parametrized in terms of the spectroscopic factors and cannot provide a tool to determine the spectroscopic factors.

Trojan Horse as an indirect technique in nuclear astrophysics. Resonance reactions

The Trojan Horse method is a powerful indirect technique that provides information to determine astrophysical factors for binary rearrangement processes $x + A \to b + B$ at astrophysically relevant energies by measuring the cross section for the Trojan Horse reaction $a + A \to y+ b + B$ in quasi-free kinematics. We present the theory of the Trojan Horse method for resonant binary subreactions based on the half-off-energy-shell R matrix approach which takes into account the off-energy-shell effects and initial and final state interactions.

The leading asymptotic terms of the three-body Coulomb scattering wave function

The asymptotic wave function derived by Alt and Mukhamedzhanov [Phys. Rev. A 47, 2004 (1993)] and Mukhamedzhanov and Lieber [Phys. Rev. A 54, 3078 (1996)] has been refined in the region where the pair $ (β,γ)$ remains close to each other while the third particle $α$ is far away from them $(ρ_α \to \infty$, $r_α/ρ_α\to 0)$. The improved wave function satisfies the Schrödinger equation up to the terms of order $O(1/{ρ_α}^{3})$, provides the leading asymptotic terms of the three-body scattering wave function with Coulomb interactions and gives further insight into the continuum behavior of the three-charged-particle wave function and helps to obtain $3\to 3$ scattered wave. This opens up further ways of solving and analysing the three-body Schrödinger equation by numerical means.

Scattering theory for arbitrary potentials

The fundamental quantities of potential scattering theory are generalized to accommodate long-range interactions. New definitions for the scattering amplitude and wave operators valid for arbitrary interactions including potentials with a Coulomb tail are presented. It is shown that for the Coulomb potential the generalized amplitude gives the physical on-shell amplitude without recourse to a renormalization procedure.

Triangle Diagram with Off-Shell Coulomb T-Matrix for (In-)Elastic Atomic and Nuclear Three-Body Processes

The driving terms in three-body theories of elastic and inelastic scattering of a charged particle off a bound state of two other charged particles contain the fully off-shell two-body Coulomb T-matrix describing the intermediate-state Coulomb scattering of the projectile with each of the charged target particles. Up to now the latter is usually replaced by the Coulomb potential, either when using the multiple-scattering approach or when solving three-body integral equations. General properties of the exact and the approximate on-shell driving terms are discussed, and the accuracy of this approximation is investigated numerically, both for atomic and nuclear processes including bound-state excitation, for energies below and above the corresponding three-body dissociation threshold, over the whole range of scattering angles.
