Occupation-selective photon-pair interactions in a flux-pumped SQUID resonator

Flux-pumped Josephson circuits provide a versatile platform for parametric photon generation and multimode bosonic control. We identify an occupation-conditioned pair interaction that arises when two harmonic normal modes participate in the same driven SQUID coordinate. We consider a degenerate pair process in which two photons are created or annihilated in a signal mode while the occupation of a second harmonic mode remains unchanged. Although it does not exchange excitations, this controller mode modifies both the resonance frequency and the strength of the pair transition. The two effects have different physical origins: diagonal Josephson nonlinearities shift the pair resonance, whereas the nonlinear Josephson matrix element makes the avoided-crossing gap itself depend on the controller occupation. Starting from the full Josephson cosine, we develop complementary time-dependent Schrieffer--Wolff and Magnus descriptions that expose the direct and virtual processes responsible for this interaction, and benchmark the resulting effective theory against a numerically converged Floquet treatment of the unexpanded two-mode circuit Hamiltonian. The occupation dependence produces a two-dimensional pair spectrum that enables selective transitions within the bosonic Fock lattice. When the controller is prepared in a coherent superposition, the same interaction converts this conditional dynamics into signal--controller entanglement and controller-dependent non-Gaussian state generation. Observable-level comparisons further show that the variation of the pair-transition strength cannot be reproduced by occupation-dependent resonance shifts alone. These results establish a boson-controlled parametric interaction in which the state of one harmonic mode controls both the spectral position and the coupling strength of a nonlinear process in another.

Entanglement between uncoupled modes with time-dependent complex frequencies

In this work we present the general unified description for the unitary time-evolution generated by time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians embedding the bosonic representations of $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ and $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ Lie algebras. We take into account a time-dependent Hermitian Dyson maps written in terms of the elements of those algebras with the relation between non-Hermitian and its Hermitian counterpart being independent of the algebra realization. As a direct consequence, we verify that a time-evolved state of uncoupled modes modulated by a time-dependent complex frequency may exhibits a non-zero entanglement even when the cross-operators, typical of the interaction between modes, are absent. This is due the non-local nature of the non-trivial dynamical Hilbert space metric encoded in the time-dependent parameters of the general Hermitian Dyson map, which depend on the imaginary part of the complex frequency.

Unitary evolution for a two-level quantum system in fractional-time scenario

The time-evolution operator obtained from the fractional-time Schrödinger equation (FTSE) is said to be non-unitary since it does not preserve the norm of the vector state in time. As done in the time-dependent non-Hermitian quantum formalism, for a traceless non-Hermitian two-level quantum system, we demonstrate that it is possible to map the non-unitary time-evolution operator in a unitary one. It is done by considering a dynamical Hilbert space with a time-dependent metric operator, constructed from a Hermitian time-dependent Dyson map, in respect to which the system evolves in a unitary way, and the standard quantum mechanics interpretation can be made properly. To elucidate our approach, we consider three examples of Hamiltonian operators and their corresponding unitary dynamics obtained from the solutions of FTSE, and the respective Dyson maps.

Spin-chain-star systems: entangling multiple chains of spin qubits

We consider spin-chain-star systems characterized by N-wise many-body interactions between the spins in each chain and the central one. We show that such systems can be exactly mapped into standard spin-star systems through unitary transformations. Such an approach allows the solution of the dynamic problem of an XX spin-chain-star model and transparently shows the emergence of quantum correlations in the system, based on the idea of entanglement between chains.

Enhancement of photon creation through the pseudo-Hermitian dynamical Casimir effect

We analyse here the pseudo-Hermitian Dynamical Casimir effect, proposing a non-Hermitian version of the effective Law's Hamiltonian used to describe the phenomenon. We verify that the average number of created photons can be substantially increased, a result which calls the attention to the possibility of engineering the time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonian we have assumed. Given the well-known difficulty in detecting the Casimir photon production, the present result reinforces the importance of pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics as a new chapter of quantum theory and an important tool for the amplification of Hermitian processes such as the degree of squeezing of quantum states.

Analytically solvable $2\times2$ $PT$-symmetry dynamics from su(1,1)-symmetry problems

A protocol for explicitly constructing the exact time-evolution operators generated by $2 \times 2$ time-dependent $PT$-symmetry Hamiltonians is reported. Its mathematical applicability is illustrated with the help of appropriate examples. The physical relevance of the proposed approach within gain-loss system scenarios, like two-coupled wave-guides, is discussed in detail.

Exactly solvable time-dependent pseudo-Hermitian $su$(1,1) Hamiltonian models

An exact analytical treatment of the dynamical problem for time-dependent 2x2 pseudo-hermitian su(1,1) Hamiltonians is reported. A class of exactly solvable and physically transparent new scenarios are identified within both classical and quantum contexts. Such a class is spanned by a positive parameter $ν$ that allows to distinguish two different dynamical regimes. Our results are usefully employed for exactly solving a classical propagation problem in a guided wave optics scenario. The usefulness of our procedure in a quantum context is illustrated by defining and investigating the su(1,1) "Rabi" scenario bringing to light analogies and differences with the standard su(2) Rabi model. Our approach, conjugated with the generalized von Neumann equation describing open quantum systems through non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, succeeds in evidencing that the $ν$-dependent passage from a real to a complex energy spectrum is generally unrelated to the existence of the two dynamical regimes.

Classes of Exactly Solvable Generalized Semi-Classical Rabi Systems

The exact quantum dynamics of a single spin-1/2 in a generic time-dependent classical magnetic field is investigated and compared with the quantum motion of a spin-1/2 studied by Rabi and Schwinger. The possibility of regarding the scenario studied in this paper as a generalization of that considered by Rabi and Schwinger is discussed and a notion of time-dependent resonance condition is introduced and carefully legitimated and analysed. Several examples help to disclose analogies and departures of the quantum motion induced in a generalized Rabi system with respect to that exhibited by the spin-1/2 in a magnetic field precessing around the $z$-axis. We find that, under generalized resonance condition, the time evolution of the transition probability $P_+^-(t)$ between the two eigenstates of ${\hat{S}}^z$ may be dominated by a regime of distorted oscillations, or may even exhibit a monotonic behaviour. At the same time we succeed in predicting no oscillations in the behaviour of $P_+^-(t)$ under general conditions. New scenarios of experimental interest originating a Landau-Zener transition is brought to light. Finally, the usefulness of our results is emphasized by showing their applicability in a classical guided wave optics scenario.

Influence of the field-detector coupling strength on the dynamical Casimir effect

We consider the problem of photon creation from vacuum inside an ideal cavity with vibrating walls in the resonance case, taking into account the interaction between the resonant field mode and a detector modeled by a quantum harmonic oscillator. The frequency of wall vibrations is taken to be twice the cavity normal frequency, modified due to the coupling with the detector. The dynamical equations are solved with the aid of the multiple scales method. Analytical expressions are obtained for the photon mean numbers and their variances for the field and detector modes, which are supposed to be initially in the vacuum quantum states. We analyze different regimes of excitation, depending on the ratio of the modulation depth of the time-dependent cavity eigenfrequency to the coupling strength between the cavity mode and detector. We show that statistical properties of the detector quantum state (variances of the photon numbers, photon distribution function, and the degree of quadrature squeezing) can be quite different from that of the field mode. Besides, the mean number of quanta in the detector mode increases with some time delay, compared with the field mode.

Active control of qubit-qubit entanglement evolution

In this work, we propose a scheme to design the time evolution of the entropy of entanglement between two qubits. It is shown an explicit accurate solution for the inverse problem of determining the time dependence of the coupling constant from a user-defined dynamical entanglement function. Such an active control of entanglement can be implemented in many different physical implementations of coupled qubits, and we briefly comment on the use of interacting flux qubits.

Quasi-perfect state transfer in a bosonic dissipative network

In this paper we propose a scheme for quasi-perfect state transfer in a network of dissipative harmonic oscillators. We consider ideal sender and receiver oscillators connected by a chain of nonideal transmitter oscillators coupled by nearest-neighbor resonances. From the algebraic properties of the dynamical quantities describing the evolution of the network state, we derive a criterion, fixing the coupling strengths between all the oscillators, apart from their natural frequencies, enabling perfect state transfer in the particular case of ideal transmitter oscillators. Our criterion provides an easily manipulated formula enabling perfect state transfer in the special case where the network nonidealities are disregarded. By adjusting the common frequency of the sender and the receiver oscillators to be out of resonance with that of the transmitters, we demonstrate that the sender's state tunnels to the receiver oscillator by virtually exciting the nonideal transmitter chain. This virtual process makes negligible the decay rate associated with the transmitter line on the expenses of delaying the time interval for the state transfer process. Apart from our analytical results, numerical computations are presented to illustrate our protocol.
