Wigner's approach enabled detection of multipartite nonlocality using all different bipartitions

Distinct from Bell's approach, Wigner had derived a form of local realist (LR) inequality which is quantum mechanically violated for a bipartite maximally entangled state. Subsequently, this approach was generalized to obtain a multipartite LR inequality. However, the violation of such generalised Wigner's inequality does not guarantee nonlocality between all possible different bipartitions of the multipartite system. In the present work, this limitation has been overcome by formulating a further generalisation of Wigner's approach through the derivation of a set of LR inequalities with respect to all different bipartitions of a N-partite system. Quantum mechanical violations of all individual LR inequalities belonging to such a set would rigorously certify multipartite nonlocality by also providing a finer characterisation of the nature of multipartite nonlocality in the following sense. The quantum mechanical violation of any given inequality of our complete set of LR inequalities would enable identification of the corresponding bipartition which exhibits nonlocality. This is in contrast to other multipartite LR inequalities such as the Svetlichny inequality or its generalisation that cannot be used to detect whether there is any particular bipartition which is nonlocally correlated. The efficacy of the scheme developed in this paper is illustrated for the tripartite and quadripartite states.

Role of nonclassical temporal correlation in powering quantum random access codes

We explore the fundamental origin of the quantum advantage behind random access code. We propose new temporal inequalities compatible with noninvasive-realist models and show that any non-zero quantum advantage of n bits encoded to 1-bit random access code in the presence of shared randomness is equivalent to the violation of the corresponding temporal inequality. As an immediate consequence of this connection, we also prove that the maximal success probability of n bits encoded to 1-bit random access code can be obtained when the maximal violation of the corresponding inequality is achieved. We then show that any non-zero quantum advantage of n bits encoded to 1-bit random access code, or in other words, any non-zero violation of the corresponding temporal inequality can certify genuine randomness.

Bell's inequality violation by dynamical Casimir photons in a superconducting microwave circuit

We study the Bell's inequality violation by dynamical Casimir radiation with pseudospin measurement. We consider a circuit quantum electrodynamical set-up where a relativistically moving mirror is simulated by variable external magnetic flux in a SQUID terminating a superconducting-microwave waveguide. We analytically obtain expectation values of the Bell operator optimized with respect to channel orientations, in terms of the system parameters. We consider the effects of local noise in the microwave field modes, asymmetry between the field modes resulting from nonzero detuning, and signal loss. Our analysis provides ranges of the above experimental parameters for which Bell violation can be observed. We show that Bell violation can be observed in this set-up up to 40 mK temperature as well as up to 65 % signal loss.

Global 21-cm brightness temperature in viscous dark energy models

We investigate the global 21-cm brightness temperature in the context of viscous dark energy (VDE) models. The bulk viscosity of dark energy perturbs the Hubble evolution of the Universe which could cool baryons faster, and hence, alter the 21-cm brightness temperature. An additional amount of entropy is also produced as an outcome of the viscous flow. We study the combined contribution of Hawking radiation from primordial black holes, decay and annihilation of particle dark matter and baryon-dark matter scattering in the backdrop of VDE models towards modification of the 21-cm temperature. We obtain bounds on the VDE model parameters which can account for the observational excess of the EDGES experiment ($-500^{+200}_{-500}$ mK at redshift $14<z<20$) due to the interplay of the above effects. Moreover, our analysis yields modified constraints on the dark matter mass and scattering cross-section compared to the case of the $Λ$CDM model.

Enhanced power of gravitational waves and rapid coalescence of black hole binaries through dark energy accretion

We consider the accretion of dark energy by constituent black holes in binary formations during the present epoch of the Universe. In the context of an observationally consistent dark energy model, we evaluate the growth of black holes' masses due to accretion. We show that accretion leads to faster circularization of the binary orbits. We compute the average power of the gravitational waves emitted from binaries, which exhibits a considerable enhancement due to the effect of growth of masses as a result of accretion. This in turn, leads to a significant reduction of the coalescence time of the binaries. We present examples pertaining to various choices of the initial masses of the black holes in the stellar mass range and above, in order to clearly establish a possible observational signature of dark energy in the emerging era of gravitational wave astronomy.

Unruh quantum Otto engine in the presence of a reflecting boundary

We introduce a new model of relativistic quantum analogue of the classical Otto engine in the presence of a perfectly reflecting boundary. A single qubit acts as the working substance interacting with a massless quantum scalar field, with the boundary obeying the Dirichlet condition. The quantum vacuum serves as a thermal bath through the Unruh effect. We observe that the response function of the qubit gets significantly modified by the presence of the reflecting boundary. From the structure of the correlation function, we find that three different cases emerge, namely, the intermediate boundary regime, the near boundary regime, and the far boundary regime. As expected, the correlation in the far boundary regime approaches that of the Unruh quantum Otto engine (UQOE) when the reflecting boundary goes to infinity. The effect of the reflecting boundary is manifested through the reduction of the critical excitation probability of the qubit and the work output of the engine. In spite of the reduced work output, the efficiency of the engine remains unaltered even in the presence of the boundary.

Effect of inhomogeneities on the propagation of gravitational waves from binaries of compact objects

We consider the propagation of gravitational waves in the late time Universe with the presence of structure. Before detection, gravitational waves emitted from distant sources have to traverse through regions of spacetime which are far from smooth and homogeneous. We investigate the effect of inhomogeneities on the observables associated with the gravitational wave sources. In particular, we evaluate the impact of inhomogeneities on gravitational wave propagation by employing Buchert's framework of averaging. In context of a toy model within the above framework, it is first shown how the redshift versus distance relation gets affected through the averaging process. We then study the variation of the redshift dependent part of the observed gravitational wave amplitude for different combination of our model parameters. We show that the variation of the gravitational wave amplitude with respect to redshift can deviate significantly compared to that in the $Λ$CDM-model. Our result signifies the importance of local inhomogeneities on precision measurements of parameters of gravitational wave sources.

Robust certification of arbitrary outcome quantum measurements from temporal correlations

Certification of quantum devices received from unknown providers is a primary requirement before utilizing the devices for any information processing task. Here, we establish a protocol for certification of a particular set of $d$-outcome quantum measurements (with $d$ being arbitrary) in a setup comprising of a preparation followed by two measurements in sequence. We propose a set of temporal inequalities pertaining to different $d$ involving correlation functions corresponding to successive measurement outcomes, that are not satisfied by quantum devices. Using quantum violations of these inequalities, we certify specific $d$-outcome quantum measurements under some minimal assumptions which can be met in an experiment efficiently. Our certification protocol neither requires entanglement, nor any prior knowledge about the dimension of the system under consideration. We further show that our protocol is robust against practical non-ideal realizations. Finally, as an offshoot of our protocol, we present a scheme for secure certification of genuine quantum randomness.

"All-versus-nothing" proof of genuine tripartite steering and entanglement certification in the two-sided device-independent scenario

We consider the task of certification of genuine entanglement of tripartite states. For this purpose, we first present an "all-versus-nothing" proof of genuine tripartite Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering by demonstrating the non-existence of a hybrid local hidden state (LHS) model in the tripartite network as a motivation to our main result. A full logical contradiction of the predictions of the hybrid LHS model with quantum mechanical outcome statistics for any three-qubit generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GGHZ) states and pure W-class states is shown. Using logical contradiction, we can distinguish between the GGHZ and W-class state in a two-sided device-independent (2SDI) steering scenario. We next formulate a 2SDI steering inequality which is a generalization of the fine-grained steering inequality (FGI) derived in \cite{PKM14} for the tripartite scenario. We show that the maximum quantum violation of this tripartite FGI can be used to certify genuine entanglement of three-qubit pure states.

Violation of equivalence in an accelerating atom-mirror system in the generalized uncertainty principle framework

We study the spontaneous excitation of a two-level atom in the presence of a perfectly reflecting mirror, when the atom, or the mirror, is uniformly accelerating in the framework of the generalised uncertainty principle (GUP). The quantized scalar field obeys a modified dispersion relation leading to a GUP deformed Klein-Gordon equation. The solutions of this equation with suitable boundary conditions are obtained to calculate the spontaneous excitation probability of the atom for the two separate cases. We show that in the case when the mirror is accelerating, the GUP modulates the spatial oscillation of the excitation probability of the atom, thus breaking the symmetry between the excitation of an atom accelerating relative to a stationary mirror, and a stationary atom excited by an accelerating mirror. An explicit violation of the equivalence principle seems to be thus manifested. We further obtain an upper bound on the GUP parameter using standard values of the system parameters.

Distillation of genuine tripartite Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering

We show that a perfectly genuine tripartite EPR steerable assemblage can be distilled from partially genuine tripartite EPR steerable assemblages. In particular, we consider two types of hybrid scenarios: one-sided device-independent (1SDI) scenario (where one observer is untrusted, and other two observers are trusted) and two-sided device-independent (2SDI) scenario (where two observers are untrusted, and one observer is trusted). In both the scenarios, we show distillation of perfectly genuine steerable assemblage of three-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states or three-qubit W states from many copies of initial partially genuine steerable assemblages of the corresponding states. In each of these cases, we demonstrate that at least one copy of a perfectly genuine steerable assemblage can be distilled with certainty from infinitely many copies of initial assemblages. In case of practical scenarios employing finite copies, we show that the efficiency of our distillation protocols reaches near perfect levels using only a few number of initial assemblages.

Resonance interaction of two entangled atoms accelerating between two mirrors

We study the resonance interaction between two entangled identical atoms coupled to a quantized scalar field vacuum, and accelerating between two mirrors. We show how radiative processes of the two-atom entangled state can be manipulated by the atomic configuration undergoing noninertial motion. Incorporating the Heisenberg picture with symmetric operator ordering, the vacuum fluctuation and the self-reaction contributions are distinguished. We evaluate the resonance energy shift and the relaxation rate of energy of the two atom system from the self-reaction contribution in the Heisenberg equation of motion. We investigate the variation of these two quantities with relevant parameters such as atomic acceleration, interatomic distance and position with respect to the boundaries. We show that both the energy level shift and the relaxation rate can be controlled by tuning the above parameters.

Self-testing of binary Pauli measurements requiring neither entanglement nor any dimensional restriction

Characterization of quantum devices received from unknown providers is a significant primary task for any quantum information processing protocol. Self-testing protocols are designed for this purpose of certifying quantum components from the observed statistics under a set of minimal assumptions. Here we propose a self-testing protocol for certifying binary Pauli measurements employing the violation of a Leggett-Garg inequality. The scenario based on temporal correlations does not require entanglement, a costly and fragile resource. Moreover, unlike previously proposed self-testing protocols in the prepare and measure scenario, our approach requires neither dimensional restrictions, nor other stringent assumptions on the type of measurements. We further analyse the robustness of this hitherto unexplored domain of self-testing of measurements.

Genuine Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering of three-qubit states by multiple sequential observers

We investigate the possibility of multiple use of a single copy of three-qubit states for genuine tripartite Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering. A pure three-qubit state of either the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ)-type or W-type is shared between two fixed observers in two wings and a sequence of multiple observers in the third wing who perform unsharp or non-projective measurements. The choice of measurement settings for each of the multiple observers in the third wing is independent and uncorrelated with the measurement settings and outcomes of the previous observers. We investigate all possible types of (2->1) and (1->2) genuine tripartite steering in the above set-up. For each case, we obtain an upper limit on the number of observers on the third wing who can demonstrate genuine EPR steering through violation of a tripartite steering inequality. We show that the GHZ state allows for a higher number of observers compared to that for W state. Additionally, (1->2) steering is possible for a larger range of the sharpness parameter compared to that for the (2->1) steering cases.

Protecting quantum correlations in presence of generalised amplitude damping channel: the two-qubit case

Any kind of quantum resource useful in different information processing tasks is vulnerable to several types of environmental noise. Here we study the behaviour of quantum correlations such as entanglement and steering in two-qubit systems under the application of the generalised amplitude damping channel and propose some protocols towards preserving them under this type of noise. First, we employ the technique of weak measurement and reversal for the purpose of preservation of correlations. We then show how the evolution under the channel action can be seen as an unitary process. We use the technique of weak measurement and most general form of selective positive operator valued measure (POVM) to achieve preservation of correlations for a significantly large range of parameter values.

Generating and detecting bound entanglement in two-qutrits using a family of indecomposable positive maps

The problem of bound entanglement detection is a challenging aspect of quantum information theory for higher dimensional systems. Here, we propose an indecomposable positive map for two-qutrit systems, which is shown to generate a class of positive partial transposed (PPT) states. A corresponding witness operator is constructed and shown to be weakly optimal and locally implementable. Further, we perform a structural physical approximation of the indecomposable map to make it a completely positive one, and find a new PPT entangled state which is not detectable by certain other well-known entanglement detection criteria.

Anharmonicity can enhance the performance of quantum refrigerators

We explore a thermodynamical effect of anharmonicity in quantum mechanical oscillators. We show that small quartic perturbations to the oscillator potential lead to an enhancement of performance of quantum refrigerators for both the Otto and Stirling cycles. A similar nonlinearity driven enhancement of performance is also observed for an analogous spin-qubit model of quantum refrigerators. We further demonstrate the robustness of improvement of the coefficient of performance versus the energy cost for creating anharmonicity. It is shown that the anharmonicity driven improvement in performance is a generic effect at the quantum level for the experimentally realizable Otto refrigerator.

Detection of genuine tripartite entanglement by multiple sequential observers

Due to the difficulties present in experimentally preparing genuine tripartite entanglement, it is important to explore the possibility of multiple usage of a single genuine entangled state. In the present paper, we present one such possibility by considering a scenario consisting of three spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles shared between Alice, Bob and multiple Charlies. Alice performs measurements on the first particle, Bob performs measurements on the second particle and multiple Charlies perform measurements on the third particle sequentially and independently. In this scenario, we investigate whether more than one Charlie can detect genuine tripartite entanglement, and we answer this question affirmatively. In order to probe genuine entanglement, we use correlation inequalities whose violations certify genuine tripartite entanglement in a device-independent way. We extend our investigation by using appropriate genuine tripartite entanglement witness operators. Using each of these different tools for detecting genuine tripartite entanglement, we find out the maximum number of Charlies who can detect genuine entanglement in the above scenario.
