Distinguishability of apparatus states in quantum measurement in the Stern-Gerlach experiment

In the context of the quantum mechanical modelling of a measurement process using the Stern-Gerlach setup, we critically examine the relationship between the notion of `distinguishability' of apparatus states defined in terms of the inner product and spatial separation among the emerging wave packets. We show that, in general, the mutual orthogonality of these wave packets does not necessarily imply their unambiguous spatial separation even in the asymptotic limit. A testable scheme is formulated to quantify such departures from `idealness' for a range of relevant parameters.

Quantum time of flight distribution for cold trapped atoms

The time of flight distribution for a cloud of cold atoms falling freely under gravity is considered. We generalise the probability current density approach to calculate the quantum arrival time distribution for the mixed state describing the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of velocities for the falling atoms. We find an empirically testable difference between the time of flight distribution calculated using the quantum probability current and that obtained from a purely classical treatment which is usually employed in analysing time of flight measurements. The classical time of flight distribution matches with the quantum distribution in the large mass and high temperature limits.

The Quantum-Classical Comparison of the Arrival Time Distribution through the Probability Current

We consider the arrival time distribution defined through the quantum probability current for a Gaussian wave packet representing free particles in quantum mechanics in order to explore the issue of the classical limit of arrival time. We formulate the classical analogue of the arrival time distribution for an ensemble of free particles represented by a phase space distribution function evolving under the classical Liouville's equation. The classical probability current so constructed matches with the quantum probability current in the limit of minimum uncertainty. Further, it is possible to show in general that smooth transitions from the quantum mechanical probability current and the mean arrival time to their respective classical values are obtained in the limit of large mass of the particles.

Particle motion and gravitational lensing in the metric of a dilaton black hole in a de Sitter universe

We consider the metric exterior to a charged dilaton black hole in a de Sitter universe. We study the motion of a test particle in this metric. Conserved quantities are identified and the Hamilton-Jacobi method is employed for the solutions of the equations of motion. At large distances from the black hole the Hubble expansion of the universe modifies the effective potential such that bound orbits could exist up to an upper limit of the angular momentum per mass for the orbiting test particle. We then study the phenomenon of strong field gravitational lensing by these black holes by extending the standard formalism of strong lensing to the non-asymptotically flat dilaton-de Sitter metric. Expressions for the various lensing quantities are obtained in terms of the metric coefficients.

Environment assisted entanglement enhancement

We consider dissipative atom-cavity systems and show that their collective dynamics leads to the maximization of entanglement for intermediate values of the cavity leakage parameter $κ$. We discuss possible ways the reservoir influences entanglement. We first consider the entanglement of a single two-level atom with a microwave cavity that is coupled to another cavity. We show that the atom-cavity entanglement can be made to increase with cavity leakage. We next show that the entanglement between two atoms passing successively through a cavity can be maximised for intermediate values of $κ$. We finally consider the micromaser where the increase of two-atom entanglement for stronger cavity-environment coupling is demonstrated for experimentally attainable values of the micromaser parameters.

Information transfer in leaky atom-cavity systems

We consider first a system of two enatangled cavities and a single two-level atom passing through one of them. A ``monogamy'' inequality for this tripartite system is quantitatively studied and verified in the presence of cavity leakage. We next consider the simultaneous passage of two-level atoms through both the cavities. Entanglement swapping is observed between the two-cavity and the two-atom system. Cavity dissipation leads to the quantitative reduction of information transfer though preserving the basic swapping property.

On the quantum analogue of Galileo's leaning tower experiment

The quantum analogue of Galileo's leaning tower experiment is revisited using wave packets evolving under the gravitational potential. We first calculate the position detection probabilities for particles projected upwards against gravity around the classical turning point and also around the point of initial projection, which exhibit mass dependence at both these points. We then compute the mean arrival time of freely falling particles using the quantum probability current, which also turns out to be mass dependent. The mass dependence of both the position detection probabilities and the mean arrival time vanish in the limit of large mass. Thus, compatibility between the weak equivalence principle and quantum mechanics is recovered in the macroscopic limit of the latter.

Atomic entanglement mediated by a squeezed cavity field

We consider the coherent state radiation field inside a micromaser cavity and study the entanglement mediated by it on a pair of two level atoms passing though the cavity one after the other. We then investigate the effects of squeezing of the cavity field on the atomic entanglement. We compute the entanglement of formation for the emerging mixed two-atom state and show that squeezing of the cavity radiation field can increase the atomic entanglement.

Effects of cavity-field statistics on atomic entanglement in the Jaynes-Cummings model

We study the entanglement properties of a pair of two-level atoms going through a cavity one after another. The initial joint state of two successive atoms that enter the cavity is unentangled. Interactions mediated by the cavity photon field result in the final two-atom state being of a mixed entangled type. We consider the field statistics of the Fock state field, and the thermal field, respectively, inside the cavity. The entanglement of formation of the joint two-atom state is calculated for both these cases as a function of the Rabi-angle $gt$. We present a comparitive study of two-atom entanglement for low and high mean photon number cases corresponding to the different fields statistics.

Braneworld black holes in cosmology and astrophysics

The braneworld description of our universe entails a large extra dimension and a fundamental scale of gravity that might be lower by several orders of magnitude compared to the Planck scale. An interesting consequence of the braneworld scenario is in the nature of spherically symmetric vacuum solutions to the brane gravitational field equations which could represent black holes with properties quite distinct compared to ordinary black holes in 4-dimensions. We discuss certain key features of some braneworld black hole geometries. Such black holes are likely to have diverse cosmological and astrophysical ramifications. The cosmological evolution of primordial braneworld black holes is described highlighting their longevity due to modified evaporation and effective accretion of radiation during the early braneworld high energy era. Observational abundance of various evaporation products of the black holes at different eras impose constraints on their initial mass fraction. Surviving primordial black holes could be candidates of dark matter present in galactic haloes. We discuss gravitational lensing by braneworld black holes. Observables related to the relativistic images of strong field gravitational lensing could in principle be used to distinguish between different braneworld black hole metrics in future observations.

How the rich get richer

In our model, $n$ traders interact with each other and with a central bank; they are taxed on the money they make, some of which is dissipated away by corruption. A generic feature of our model is that the richest trader always wins by 'consuming' all the others: another is the existence of a threshold wealth, below which all traders go bankrupt. The two-trader case is examined in detail,in the socialist and capitalist limits, which generalise easily to $n>2$. In its mean-field incarnation, our model exhibits a two-time-scale glassy dynamics, as well as an astonishing universality. When preference is given to local interactions in finite neighbourhoods,a novel feature emerges: instead of at most one overall winner in the system, finite numbers of winners emerge, each one the overlord of a particular region. The patterns formed by such winners (metastable states) are very much a consequence of initial conditions, so that the fate of the marketplace is ruled by its past history; hysteresis is thus also manifested.

Gravitational lensing in the weak field limit by a braneworld black hole

Braneworld black holes existing today may be of primordial origin, or may even be produced in high energy particle collisions in the laboratory and in cosmic ray showers as well. These black holes obey a modified mass-radius relationship compared to standard Schwarzschild black holes. Using the variational principle we calculate the bending angle of a light ray near the horizon of a braneworld black hole in the weak field limit. We next derive the expressions of several lensing quantities like the Einstein radius and the magnification for a point light source. These expressions are modified compared to the lensing quantities for standard Schwarzschild black holes and contain the scale of the extra dimensions.

Interacting black holes on the brane: the seeding of binaries

We consider the evolution of sub-horizon-sized black holes which are formed during the high energy phase of the braneworld scenario. These black holes are long-lived due to modified evaporation and accretion of radiation during the radiation dominated era. We argue that an initial mass difference between any two neighbouring black holes is always amplified because of their exchange of energy with the surrounding radiation. We present a scheme of binary formation based on mass differences suggesting that such a scenario could lead to binaries with observable signatures.

Information transfer through a one-atom micromaser

We consider a realistic model for the one-atom micromaser consisting of a cavity maintained in a steady state by the streaming of two-level Rydberg atoms passing one at a time through it. We show that it is possible to monitor the robust entanglement generated between two successive experimental atoms passing through the cavity by the control decoherence parameters. We calculate the entanglement of formation of the joint two-atom state as a function of the micromaser pump parameter. We find that this is in direct correspondence with the difference of the Shannon entropy of the cavity photons before and after the passage of the atoms for a reasonable range of dissipation parameters. It is thus possible to demonstrate information transfer between the cavity and the atoms through this set-up.

Spin dependent observable effect for free particles using the arrival time distribution

The mean arrival time of free particles is computed using the quantum probability current. This is uniquely determined in the non-relativistic limit of Dirac equation, although the Schroedinger probability current has an inherent non-uniqueness. Since the Dirac probability current involves a spin-dependent term, an arrival time distribution based on the probability current shows an observable spin-dependent effect, even for free particles. This arises essentially from relativistic quantum dynamics, but persists even in the non-relativistic regime.

Primordial braneworld black holes: significant enhancement of lifetimes through accretion

The Randall-Sundrum (RS-II) braneworld cosmological model with a fraction of the total energy density in primordial black holes is considered. Due to their 5-d geometry these black holes undergo modified Hawking evaporation. It is shown that during the high energy regime accretion from the surrounding radiation bath is dominant compared to evaporation. This effect increases the mass of the black holes till the onset of matter (or black hole) domination of the total energy density. Thus black holes with even very small initial masses could survive till several cosmologically interesting eras.

Domination of black hole accretion in brane cosmology

We consider the evolution of primordial black holes formed during the high energy phase of the braneworld scenario. We show that the effect of accretion from the surrounding radiation bath is dominant compared to evaporation for such black holes. This feature lasts till the onset of matter (or black hole) domination of the total energy density which could occur either in the high energy phase or later. We find that the black hole evaporation times could be significantly large even for black holes with small initial mass to survive till several cosmologically interesting eras.

Understanding Quantum Superarrivals using the Bohmian model

We investigate the orgin of ``quantum superarrivals'' in the reflection and transmission probabilities of a Gaussian wave packet for a rectangular potential barrier while it is perturbed by either reducing or increasing its height. There exists a finite time interval during which the probability of reflection is {\it larger} (superarrivals) while the barrier is {\it lowered} compared to the unperturbed case. Similarly, during a certain interval of time, the probability of transmission while the barrier is {\it raised} {\it exceeds} that for free propagation. We compute {\it particle trajectories} using the Bohmian model of quantum mechanics in order to understand {\it how} this phenomenon of superarrivals occurs.
