Self-Organized Stationary Patterns in Networks of Bistable Chemical Reactions

Experiments with networks of discrete reactive bistable electrochemical elements organized in regular and nonregular tree networks are presented to confirm an alternative to the Turing mechanism for the formation of self-organized stationary patterns. The results show that the pattern formation can be described by the identification of domains that can be activated individually or in combinations. The method also enabled the localization of chemical reactions to network substructures and the identification of critical sites whose activation results in complete activation of the system. Although the experiments were performed with a specific nickel electrodissolution system, they reproduced all the salient dynamic behavior of a general network model with a single nonlinearity parameter. Thus, the considered pattern-formation mechanism is very robust, and similar behavior can be expected in other natural or engineered networked systems that exhibit, at least locally, a treelike structure.

Gravity in a stabilized brane world model in five-dimensional Brans-Dicke theory

Linearized equations of motion for gravitational and scalar fields are found and solved in a stabilized brane world model in five-dimensional Brans-Dicke theory. The physical degrees of freedom are isolated, the mass spectrum of Kaluza-Klein excitations is found and the coupling constants of these excitations to matter on the negative tension brane are calculated.

On the opportunity of spectroscopic determination of absolute atomic densities in non-equilibrium plasmas from measured relative intensities within resonance multiplets distorted by self-absorption

The opportunities of the application of the recently proposed approach in optical emission spectroscopy of non-equilibrium plasmas have been studied. The approach consists of several methods of the determination of {\em absolute} particle densities of atoms from measured {\em relative} intensities within resonance multiplets distorted by self-absorption. All available spectroscopic data concerning resonance spectral lines of atoms having multiplet ground states from boron up to gallium were analyzed. It is found that in the case of C, O, F, S and Cl atoms an application of the methods needs VUV technique, while densities of B, Al, Si, Sc, Ti, V, Co, Ni, Ga atoms may be obtained by means of the intensity measurements in UV and visible parts of emission spectra suitable for ordinary spectrometers used for optical diagnostics and monitoring of non-equilibrium plasmas including industrial plasma technologies.

Controlling spatiotemporal chaos in oscillatory reaction-diffusion systems by time-delay autosynchronization

Diffusion-induced turbulence in spatially extended oscillatory media near a supercritical Hopf bifurcation can be controlled by applying global time-delay autosynchronization. We consider the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in the Benjamin-Feir unstable regime and analytically investigate the stability of uniform oscillations depending on the feedback parameters. We show that a noninvasive stabilization of uniform oscillations is not possible in this type of systems. The synchronization diagram in the plane spanned by the feedback parameters is derived. Numerical simulations confirm the analytical results and give additional information on the spatiotemporal dynamics of the system close to complete synchronization.

Very long transients in globally coupled maps

Very long transients are found in the partially ordered phase of type II of globally coupled logistic maps. The transients always lead the system in this phase to a state with a few synchronous clusters. This transient behaviour is not significantly influenced by the introduction of weak noises. However, such noises generally favor cluster partitions with more stable periodic dynamics.

Noise-induced breakdown of coherent collective motion in swarms

We consider swarms formed by populations of self-propelled particles with attractive long-range interactions. These swarms represent multistable dynamical systems and can be found either in coherent traveling states or in an incoherent oscillatory state where translational motion of the entire swarm is absent. Under increasing the noise intensity, the coherent traveling state of the swarms is destroyed and an abrupt transition to the oscillatory state takes place.

Coherence and clustering in ensembles of neural networks

Large ensembles of globally coupled chaotic neural networks undergo a transition to complete synchronization for high coupling intensities. The onset of this fully coherent behavior is preceded by a regime where clusters of networks with identical activity are spontaneously formed. In these regimes of coherent collective evolution the dynamics of each neural network is still chaotic. These results may be relevant to the study of systems where interaction between elements is able to give rise to coherent complex behavior, such as in cortex activity or in insect societies.
