Topological phase separation in 2D quantum lattice Bose-Hubbard system away from half-filling

We suppose that the doping of the 2D hard-core boson system away from half-filling may result in the formation of multi-center topological inhomogeneity (defect) such as charge order (CO) bubble domain(s) with Bose superfluid (BS) and extra bosons both localized in domain wall(s), or a {\it topological} CO+BS {\it phase separation}, rather than an uniform mixed CO+BS supersolid phase. Starting from the classical model we predict the properties of the respective quantum system. The long-wavelength behavior of the system is believed to remind that of granular superconductors, CDW materials, Wigner crystals, and multi-skyrmion system akin in a quantum Hall ferromagnetic state of a 2D electron gas. To elucidate the role played by quantum effects and that of the lattice discreteness we have addressed the simplest nanoscopic counterpart of the bubble domain in a checkerboard CO phase of 2D hc-BH square lattice. It is shown that the relative magnitude and symmetry of multi-component order parameter are mainly determined by the sign of the $nn$ and $nnn$ transfer integrals. In general, the topologically inhomogeneous phase of the hc-BH system away from the half-filling can exhibit the signatures both of $s,d$, and $p$ symmetry of the off-diagonal order.

NMR and LDA evidence for spiral magnetic order in the chain cuprate LiCu2O2

We report on {6,7}Li nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of the spin-chain compound LiCu2O2 in the paramagnetic and magnetically ordered states. Below T about 24 K the NMR lineshape presents a clear signature of incommensurate (IC) static modulation of the local magnetic field consistent with an IC spiral modulation of the magnetic moments. {7}Li NMR reveals strong phason-like dynamical fluctuations extending well below 24 K. We hypothesize that a series of phase transitions at 24.2, 22.5, and 9 K reflects a "Devil's staircase" type behavior generic for IC systems. LDA based calculations of exchange integrals reveal a large in-chain frustration leading to a magnetical spiral.

Surface plasmon resonances in the absorption spectra of nanocrystalline cupric oxide

Optical absorption spectra of nanocrystalline cupric oxide CuO samples, obtained using the converging spherical shock wave procedure, reveal significant spectral weight red-shift as compared with spectra of single crystalline CuO samples. In addition, some of these samples manifest the remarkable temperature-dependent "peak-dip-hump" feature near 1.3-1.6 eV. The minimal model suggested to explain both effects implies the nanoceramic CuO to be a system of two species of identical metallic-like droplets with volume fractions p1 >> p2 and damping parameters gamma1 >> gamma2, respectively, dispersed in an effective insulating matrix. In other words, both effects are assigned to the surface plasmon (Mie) resonances due to a small volume fraction of metallic-like nanoscale droplets with Drude optical response embedded in the bare insulating medium. Simple effective medium theory is shown to provide the reasonable description of the experimental spectra.

Dynamical charge inhomogeneity and crystal-field fluctuations for 4f ions in high-Tc cuprates

The main relaxation mechanism of crystal-field excitations in rare-earth ions in cuprates is believed to be provided by the fluctuations of crystalline electric field induced by a dynamic charge inhomogeneity generic for the doped cuprates. We address the generalized granular model as one of the model scenario for such an ingomogeneity where the cuprate charge subsystem remind that of Wigner crystal with the melting transition and phonon-like positional excitation modes. Formal description of R-ion relaxation coincides with that of recently suggested magnetoelastic mechanism.

Infrared optical response of strongly correlated cuprates: the effects of topological phase separation

We examine the effects of electron inhomogeneity on IR optical conductivity of cuprates. Nanoscopic electron inhomogeneity is believed to be inherent property of doped cuprates throughout the phase diagram beginning from electron-hole droplets in insulating parent system and ending by a topological phase separation in electron-hole bose liquid (EHBL) phase. A simple model of metal-insulator composite and effective medium theory has been used to describe the static phase separation effects. The low-frequency dynamics of topological EHBL phase in a random potential in underdoped regime has been discussed in a quasiparticle approximation within the memory function formalism. The effects of static and dynamic nanoscopic phase separation are believed to describe the main peculiarities of the optical response of doped cuprates in a wide spectral range.

Nanoscale phase separation in $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ films: evidence for the texture driven optical anisotropy

The IR optical absorption (0.1-1.5 eV) in the $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ films on LAO substrate exhibits the drastic temperature evolution of the spectral weight evidencing the insulator to metal transition. Single crystal films were found to reveal strong linear dichroism with anomalous spectral oscillations and fairly weak temperature dependence. Starting from the concept of phase separation, we develop the effective medium model to account for these effects. The optical anisotropy of the films is attributed to the texturization of the ellipsoidal inclusions of the quasimetal phase caused by a mismatch of the film and substrate and the twin texture of the latter.

Origin of Magnetoresistance Anomalies in Antiferromagnetic YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}

Specific d-wave angular dependence of the in-plane magnetoresistence in antiferromagnetic tetragonal YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x} (x~0.3) on orientation of the external magnetic field in (a,b) plane is assigned to the effective hole transport through low lying excited purely oxygen doublet O2pe_u state, not the ground b_{1g}(d_{x^2-y^2}) state. External magnetic field determines the orientation of the strong exchange field for the spin-triplet b_{1g}e_u:{}^{3}E_u state of the hole CuO_4 center and due to the spin-orbital coupling results in either orbital polarization of the E_u doublet giving rise to the spatial anisotropy of the hole transport. Experimental data allow to estimate parameter of the effective spin Hamiltonian.

Dipole and Quadrupole Skyrmions in S=1 (Pseudo)Spin Systems

In terms of spin coherent states we have investigated topological defects in 2D S=1 (pseudo)spin quantum system with the bilinear and biquadratic isotropic exchange in the continuum limit. The proper Hamiltonian of the model can be written as bilinear in the generators of SU(3) group (Gell-Mann matrices). The knowledge of such group structure allows us to obtain some new exact analytical results. Analysing the proper classical model we arrive at different skyrmionic solutions with finite energy and the spatial distribution of spin-dipole and/or spin-quadrupole moments termed as dipole, quadrupole, and dipole-quadrupole skyrmions, respectively. Among the latter we would like note the in-plane vortices with the in-plane distribution of spin moment, varying spin length, and the non-trivial distribution of spin-quadrupole moments.

One-Center Charge Transfer Transitions in Manganites

In frames of a rather conventional cluster approach, which combines the crystal field and the ligand field models we have considered different charge transfer (CT) states and O 2p-Mn 3d CT transitions in MnO$_{6}^{9-}$ octahedra. The many-electron dipole transition matrix elements were calculated using the Racah algebra for the cubic point group. Simple "local" approximation allowed to calculate the relative intensity for all dipole-allowed $π-π$ and $σ-σ$ CT transitions. We present a self-consistent description of the CT bands in insulating stoichiometric LaMn$^{3+}$O$_3$ compound with the only Mn$^{3+}$ valent state and idealized octahedral MnO$_{6}^{9-}$ centers which allows to substantially correct the current interpretation of the optical spectra. Our analysis shows the multi-band structure of the CT optical response with the weak low-energy edge at 1.7 eV, associated with forbidden $t_{1g}(π)-e_{g}$ transition and a series of the weak and strong dipole-allowed high-energy transitions starting from 2.5 and 4.5 eV, respectively, and extending up to nearly 11 eV. The most intensive features are associated with two strong composite bands near $4.6÷4.7$ eV and $8÷9$ eV, respectively, resulting from the superposition of the dipole-allowed $σ-σ$ and $π-π$ CT transitions. These predictions are in good agreement with experimental spectra. The experimental data point to a strong overscreening of the crystal field parameter $Dq$ in the CT states of MnO$_{6}^{9-}$ centers.

Doped Manganites Beyond Conventional Double-Exchange Model

The problem of adequate electronic model for doped manganites like La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_3 remains controversial. In such a situation we argue a necessity to discuss all possible candidate states with different valent structure of manganese and oxygen atoms, as well as different valent states of octahedral MnO_{6} centers. In frames of quantum-chemical approach, crystal field and the ligand field models we address different types of MnO_6 centers, different types of d-d, and charge transfer transitions. We draw special attention to the so-called charge transfer states related to strong intra-center charge fluctuations. As we conjecture, namely these could become active valent states for doped manganites. We discuss some electric and magnetic properties of the electron MnO_{6}^{10-}, and hole MnO_{6}^{8-} centers with unconventional ^{6}A_{1g}-{}^{6}T_{1u} and ^{4}A_{2g}-{}^{4}T_{2u} valent manifolds, respectively. We propose two idealized theoretical models for hole system in doped manganites with an overall oxygen localization for the doped holes occupying the non-bonding O2p orbitals, and a doping induced formation of a system of the electron MnO_{6}^{10-} and hole MnO_{6}^{8-} centers being equivalent to the electron-hole Bose liquid.

Nanoscopic stripe-like inhomogeneities and optical conductivity of doped cuprates

We propose a new approach to theoretical description of doped cuprate like $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4$ and $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$, assuming phase separation and treating it as inhomogeneous composite material, containing the dielectric and metallic stripe-like nanoparticles. The formalism of effective medium theory is then applied for calculation of dielectric permittivity, optical and EELS spectra of $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_4$ with $x$ varying in a wide range. Reasonable semi-quantitative agreement with experiment has been obtained even for the simplest version of the theory. The model was found able to reproduce all essential features of optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ and transmittance both for thin films (M. Suzuki, Phys. Rev. B 39, 2321 (1989)) and bulk single-crystalline samples (S. Uchida {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. B 43, 7942 (1991)). Substantial difference in spectral and doping dependence of optical absorption for the thin-film and bulk samples is easily explained if only to assume different shape of metallic and dielectric regions in both materials. New peaks in optical conductivity and absorption spectra, that emerge in the midinfrared range near 0.5 and 1.5 eV upon doping are attributed to geometrical (Mie's) resonances. Overall, we point out that all main peculiarities of the doping effect on optical and EELS spectra for cuprates including the spectral changes accompanying the insulator-to-metal transition can be explained rather prosaically by recognizing that the doping results in emergence of nanoscopic metallic stripe-like droplets.

Large non-adiabatic hole polarons and matrix element effects in the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of dielectric cuprates

It has been made an extention of the conventional theory based on the assumption of the well isolated Zhang-Rice singlet to be a first electron-removal state in dielectric copper oxide. One assumes the photohole has been localised on either small (pseudo)Jahn-Teller polaron or large non-adiabatic polaron enclosed one or four to five $CuO_4$ centers, respectively, with active one-center valent $(^{1}A_{1g}-{}^{1,3}E_{u})$ manifold. In the framework of the cluster model we have performed a model microscopic calculation of the ${\bf k}$-dependence of the matrix element effects and photon polarization effects for the angle-resolved photoemission in dielectric cuprate like $Sr_{2}CuO_{2}Cl_{2}$. We show that effects like the ''remnant Fermi surface'' detected in ARPES experiment for $Ca_{2}CuO_{2}Cl_{2}$ may be, in fact, a reflection of the matrix element effects, not a reflection of the original band-structure Fermi surface, or the strong antiferromagnetic correlations. The measured dispersion-like features in the low-energy part of the ARPES spectra may be a manifestation of the complex momentum-dependent spectral line-shape of the large PJT polaron response, not the dispersion of the well-isolated Zhang-Rice singlet in antiferromagnetic matrix.

Features of Hopping Integral and Unconventional Orbital Modes for Quantum Skyrmions in Heisenberg Ferromagnet

We use the coherent state approximation for the skyrmion in the isotropic quantum Heisenberg ferromagnet to obtain analytical expression for skyrmion hopping integral as a function of distance. It appears the skyrmion hopping is restricted by distances larger than its effective diameter. Some puzzling properties of the orbital skyrmionic modes are discussed. Spin distribution in these states is obtained and effect of quantum spin contraction is demonstrated. The principal possibility of lowering the skyrmion energy due to a bonding-like state formation is illustrated.

Non-rigid shell model and novel correlational effects in atomic and molecular systems

Direct analytical and numerical calculation show that two-electron atomic configuration can be unstable with respect to a static or dynamic shift of the electron shells. This enables to develop a so called non-rigid shell model for a partial account of the electron correlations within atomic clusters in solids. In a framework of this model a correlated state of two-electron molecular configuration is described by a set of symmetrized shell shifts q^γsimilarly to the well known shell model developed for a description of the lattice dynamics. A set of q^γ-shifts are found after minimization of the energy functional. We present a number of the novel unconventional effects including: i) a correlational mechanism of the local pairing; ii) a correlational (pseudo) Jahn-Teller effect provided by a joint account of the electron shell shifts and conventional nuclear displacements; iii) an appearance of the chiral correlational states. The model allows an introduction of the pseudo-spin formalism and effective "spin-Hamiltonian" for a description of the short- and long-range ordering of non-rigid atomic backgrounds in crystals. Finally, the model can be readily built in the conventional band schemes.

The Singlet-Triplet Pseudo-Jahn-Teller Centers in Copper Oxides

One of the most exciting features of the hole centers CuO_{4}^{5-} in doped cuprates is an unusually complicated ground state which is the result of the electronic quasi-degeneracy. An additional hole, doped to the basic CuO_{4}^{6-} cluster with the b_{1g} hole can occupy both the same hybrid Cu3d-O2p orbital state resulting in a Zhang-Rice singlet ^1A_{1g} and the purely oxygen e_u molecular orbital resulting in a singlet or triplet ^{1,3}E_u term with the close energies. We present detailed analysis of the (pseudo)-Jahn-Teller effect driven by the near-degeneracy within the (^1A_{1g},^{1,3}E_u)-manifold.

Vibronic Mechanism of the Isotope and Pressure Effects in Cuprates

The doped cuprates are considered to be a system of local spinless bosons moving in a lattice of the hole pseudo-Jahn-Teller centers CuO_{4}^{5-}. A detailed qualitative and quantitative description of the vibronic mechanism determining both the isotope substitution and the external pressure effect on T_c is given. This mechanism can properly interpret the principal peculiarities of isotopic and baric effects in cuprates except the region of the well developed percolation phenomena
