Dynamical demixing of a binary mixture under sedimentation

We investigate the sedimentation dynamics of a binary mixture, the species of which differ by their Stokes coefficients but are identical otherwise. We analyze the sedimentation dynamics and the morphology of the final deposits using Brownian dynamics simulations for mixtures with a range of sedimentation velocities of both species. In addition, we use the lattice Boltzmann method to study hydrodynamic effects. We found a threshold in the difference of the sedimentation velocities above which the species in the final deposit are segregated. The degree of segregation increases with the difference in the Stokes coefficients or the sedimentation velocities above the threshold. We propose a simple analytical model that captures the main features of the simulated deposits.

The spin structure of the proton at low $x$ and low $Q^2$ in two-dimensional bins from COMPASS

The longitudinal double spin asymmetries $A_1^p$ and the spin dependent structure function of the proton $g_1^p$ were extracted from COMPASS data in the region of low Bjorken scaling variable $x$ and low photon virtuality $Q^2$. The data were taken in 2007 and 2011 from scattering of polarised muons off polarised protons, resulting in a sample that is 150 times larger than the one from the previous experiment SMC that pioneered studies in this kinematic region. For the first time, $A_1^p$ and $g_1^p$ were evaluated in this region in two-dimensional bins of kinematic variables: $(x,Q^2)$, $(ν,Q^2)$, $(x,ν)$ and $(Q^2,x)$. The following kinematic region was investigated: $4\times 10^{-5}<x<4\times 10^{-2}$, $0.001$~(GeV/$c$)$^2<Q^2<1$~(GeV/$c$)$^2$ and $14$~GeV$<ν<194$~GeV. The obtained results were confronted with theoretical models.

Self-assembly of colloidal bands driven by a periodic external field

We study the formation of bands of colloidal particles driven by periodic external fields. Using Brownian dynamics, we determine the dependence of the band width on the strength of the particle interactions and on the intensity and periodicity of the field. We also investigate the switching (field-on) dynamics and the relaxation times as a function of the system parameters. The observed scaling relations were analyzed using a simple dynamic density-functional theory of fluids.

Longitudinal double spin asymmetry $A_1^p$ and spin-dependent structure function $g_1^p$ of the proton at low $x$ and low $Q^2$ from COMPASS

The COMPASS experiment at CERN has collected a large sample of events of inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarised muons off longitudinally polarised protons in the non-perturbative region (four-momentum transfer squared $Q^2<1$ GeV$^2$/$c^2$), with a Bjorken scaling variable in the range $4\times 10^{-5}<x<4\times 10^{-2}$. The data set is two orders of magnitude larger than the similar sample collected by the SMC experiment. These data complement our data for polarised deuterons. They allow the accurate determination of the longitudinal double spin asymmetry $A_1^p$ and of the spin-dependent structure function $g_1^p$ of the proton in the region of low $x$ and low $Q^2$. The preliminary results of the analysis of these data yield non zero and positive asymmetries and of the structure function $g_1^p$. This is the first time that spin effects are observed at such low $x$.

Evolution of Semilocal String Networks: I. Large-scale Properties

We report on a detailed numerical study of the evolution of semilocal string networks, based on the largest and most accurate field theory simulations of these objects to date. We focus on the large-scale network properties, confirming earlier indications (coming from smaller simulations) that linear scaling is the attractor solution for the entire parameter space of initial conditions that we are able to probe. We also provide a brief comparison of our numerical results with the predictions of a previously developed one-scale model for the overall evolution of these networks. Two subsequent papers will discuss in more detail the analytic modeling of the semilocal segment populations as well as optimized numerical diagnostics.

Control Systems: an Application to a High Energy Physics Experiment (COMPASS)

The Detector Control System (DCS) of the COMPASS experiment at CERN is presented. The experiment has a high level of complexity and flexibility and a long time of operation, that constitute a challenge for its full monitorisation and control. A strategy to use a limited number of standardised, cost-effective, industrial solutions of hardware and software was pursued. When such solutions were not available or could not be used, customised solutions were developed.

Analytic Models for the Evolution of Semilocal String Networks

We revisit previously developed analytic models for defect evolution and adapt them appropriately for the study of semilocal string networks. We thus confirm the expectation (based on numerical simulations) that linear scaling evolution is the attractor solution for a broad range of model parameters. We discuss in detail the evolution of individual semilocal segments, focusing on the phenomenology of segment growth, and also provide a preliminary comparison with existing numerical simulations.
