Observation of the magnetic domain structures in Cu$_{0,47}$Ni$_{0,53}$ thin films at low temperatures

We report on the first experimental visualization of domain structure in films of weakly ferromagnetic Cu$_{0,47}$Ni$_{0,53}$ alloy with different thickness at liquid helium temperatures. Improved high-resolution Bitter decoration technique was used to map the magnetic contrast on the top of the films well below the Curie temperature T$_{Curie}$ ($\sim$ 60 K). In contrast to magnetic force microscopy, this technique allowed visualization of the domain structure without its disturbance while the larger areas of the sample were probed. Maze-like domain patterns, typical for perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, were observed. The average domain width was found to be about 100 nm.

Planar SFS Josephson Junctions Made by Focused Ion Beam Etching

Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (S-F-S) Josephson junctions were fabricated by making a narrow cut through a S-F double layer using direct writing by Focused Ion Beam (FIB). Due to a high resolution (spot size smaller than 10 nm) of FIB, junctions with a small separation between superconducting electrodes ($\leq$ 30 nm) can be made. Such a short distance is sufficient for achieving a considerable proximity coupling through a diluted CuNi ferromagnet. We have successfully fabricated and studied S-F-S (Nb-CuNi-Nb) and S-S'-S (Nb-Nb/CuNi-Nb) junctions. Junctions exhibit clear Fraunhofer modulation of the critical current as a function of magnetic field, indicating good uniformity of the cut. By changing the depth of the cut, junctions with the $I_c R_n$ product ranging from 0.5 mV to $\sim 1μ$V were fabricated.

Proximity Effect and Spontaneous Vortex Phase in Planar SF-Structures

The proximity effect in SF structures was examined. It is shown that, due to the oscillations of the induced superconducting order parameter in a ferromagnet, the critical temperature of an SF-bilayer becomes minimal when the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer is close to a quarter of the period of spatial oscillations. It is found that the spontaneous vortex state arisen in the superconductor due to the proximity of the magnetic domain structure of a ferromagnet brings about noticeable magnetoresistive effects.
