Jsymm: A Python package for symmetry analysis of exchange tensors in magnetic Hamiltonians

Symmetries of a crystal often restrict its physical properties. In particular, they determine possible forms of the tensors that describe interatomic exchange interaction, which governs a wide range of magnetic phenomena. Computationally demanding first-principles calculations of the exchange tensors can be greatly simplified by taking the symmetry constraints into account. Here, we present Jsymm, a Python package that derives the most general symmetry-compatible form of the exchange tensors directly from the crystallographic data. For any bond formed by magnetic ions, Jsymm produces the tensors of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and anisotropic Heisenberg exchange interaction in symbolic form, as well as the tensors for all other bonds related to it by symmetry. This reduces the number of independent model parameters, dramatically lowering the computational cost of the ab initio calculations and preventing unphysical results arising from symmetry violations. The package accepts standard CIF files and provides a web interface in addition to an interactive text mode and a Python library. We demonstrate its utility on La$_2$CuO$_4$ and $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$, reproducing known symmetry constraints and revealing additional relations between components of the exchange tensors of different bonds.

Self-similarity of rogue wave generation in gyrotrons: Beyond the Peregrine breather

Within the framework of numerical simulations, we study the gyrotron dynamics under conditions of a significant excess of the operating current over the starting value, when the generation of electromagnetic pulses with anomalously large amplitudes (``rogue waves'') can be realized. The averaged shape of high-power pulses is shown to be very close to the celebrated Peregrine breather. At the same time, we demonstrate that the relation between peak power and duration of rogue waves is self-similar, but does not reproduce the one characteristic for Peregrine breathers. Remarkably, the discovered self-similar relation corresponds to the exponential nonlinearity of an equivalent Schrödinger-like evolution equation. This interpretation can be used as a theoretical basis for explaining the giant amplitudes of gyrotron rogue waves.

Topological insulators and geometry of vector bundles

For a long time, band theory of solids has focused on the energy spectrum, or Hamiltonian eigenvalues. Recently, it was realized that the collection of eigenvectors also contains important physical information. The local geometry of eigenspaces determines the electric polarization, while their global twisting gives rise to the metallic surface states in topological insulators. These phenomena are central topics of the present notes. The shape of eigenspaces is also responsible for many intriguing physical analogies, which have their roots in the theory of vector bundles. We give an informal introduction to the geometry and topology of vector bundles and describe various physical models from this mathematical perspective.

Geometry of projected connections, Zak phase, and electric polarization

The concept of the Zak phase lies at the core of the modern theory of electric polarization. It is defined using the components of the Bloch wave functions in a certain basis, which is not captured by the standard expression for Berry potential. We provide a consistent geometric interpretation of the Zak phase in terms of projected connections. In the context of Bloch states, we relate the transformation law of projected Berry potential with classical currents that contribute to the time derivative of the electric polarization. This gives a new argument for the Zak phase formula for the electronic contribution to the polarization. We demonstrate that the Wannier functions play a key role in the description of an adiabatic current in a periodic system.

Generation of rogue waves in gyrotrons operating in the regime of developed turbulence

Within the framework of the average approach and direct 3D PIC (particle-in-cell) simulations we demonstrate that the gyrotrons operating in the regime of developed turbulence can sporadically emit "giant" spikes with intensities a factor of 100-150 greater than the average radiation power and a factor of 6-9 exceeding the power of the driving electron beams. Together with the statistical features such as a long-tail probability distribution, this allows the interpretation of generated spikes as microwave rogue waves. The mechanism of spikes formation is related to the simultaneous cyclotron interaction of a gyrating electron beam with forward and backward waves near the waveguide cutoff frequency as well as with the longitudinal deceleration of electrons.

Magnetic Bubble Domain Blowing with Electric Probe

The problem of bubble domain generation is revisited from a new perspective that was opened by recent findings in the field of physics of magnetic skyrmions. The single bubble domain can be generated under the tip electrode touching the surface of dielectric iron garnet film by positive step-like voltage pulse and its equilibrium size can be increased with further rising of electric potential. The theoretical analysis shows that the same mechanism can be used to stabilize the submicron bubbles topologically equivalent to the skyrmion.

Spin flexoelectricity and chiral spin structures in magnetic films

In this short review a broad range of chiral phenomena observed in magnetic films (spin cycloid and skyrmion structures formation as well as chirality dependent domain wall motion) is considered under the perspective of spin flexoelectricity, i.e. the relation between bending of magnetization pattern and electric polarization. The similarity and the difference between the spin flexoelectricity and the newly emerged notion of spin flexomagnetism is discussed. The phenomenological arguments based on the geometrical idea of curvature-induced effects are supported by analysis of the microscopic mechanisms of spin flexoelectricity based on three-site ion indirect exchange and twisted RKKY interaction models. The electric-field-induced creation of the single skyrmion is predicted.

Electric field induced magnetic domain wall tilting

The inclination of the magnetic domain wall plane in electric field is observed. The simple theoretical model of this phenomenon that takes into account the spin flexoelectricity is proposed. The value of electric polarization of the magnetic domain wall is estimated as 0.3μC/m^2 that agrees well with the results of electric field driven magnetic domain wall motion measurements.
