Effects of Magnetic and non-Magnetic Impurities on the Superconducting State of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$

We report Electronic Raman Scattering measurements on optimally doped Zn and Ni substituted YBCO in A$_{1g}$ and B$_{1g}$ channels. We show that the superconducting gap energy is independant of magnetic Ni and non-magnetic Zn substitutions. On the contrary the collective A$_{1g}$ mode follows the critical temperature $T_c$ with two distinct slopes for Ni and Zn, and tracks the magnetic resonance seen in inelastic neutron scattering. We explain the unconventionnal energy dependence of the superconducting gap and discuss the behaviour of the A$_{1g}$ mode within magnetic and non-magnetic impurities.

Intrinsic Low Temperature Paramagnetism in B-DNA

We present experimental study of magnetization in $λ$-DNA in conjunction with structural measurements. The results show the surprising interplay between the molecular structures and their magnetic property. In the B-DNA state, $λ$-DNA exhibits paramagnetic behaviour below 20 K that is non-linear in applied magnetic field whereas in the A-DNA state, remains diamagnetic down to 2 K. We propose orbital paramagnetism as the origin of the observed phenomena and discuss its relation to the existence of long range coherent transport in B-DNA at low temperature.

Two Distinct Electronic Contributions in the Fully Symmetric Raman Response of High $T_{c}$ Cuprates

We show by non resonant effect in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201)and by Zn substitutions in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (Y-123) compounds that the fully symmetric Raman spectrum has two distinct electronic contributions. The A$_{1g}$ response consists in the superconducting pair breaking peak at the 2$Δ$ energy and a collective mode close to the magnetic resonance energy. These experimental results reconcile the \textit{d-wave} model to the A$_{1g}$ Raman response function in so far as a collective mode that is distinct from the pair breaking peak is present in the A$_{1g}$ channel.

Interplay between the pseudogap and superconductivity in HgBa$_2$CuO$_4$ single crystals

We report a doping dependant Electronic Raman Scattering (ERS) study of HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201) single crystals. We investigate the dynamics of the antinodal and nodal quasiparticles. We show that the dynamical response of the antinodal quasiparticles is strongly reduced towards the underdoped regime in both the normal and superconducting states. When probing the nodal quasiparticles, we are able to distinguish between the energy scale of the pseudogap and that of the superconducting gap. A simple model relating the suppression of the dynamical response of the antinodal quasiparticles to fluctuations related to a competing phase is proposed.

Resonant Raman scattering in mercurate single crystals

We report resonant electronic Raman scattering in optimally doped single layer HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201) and trilayer HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+δ}$ (Hg-1223) single crystals. Analysis of the $B_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ channels in the superconducting state of Hg-1201 advocates for a gap having d-wave symmetry. In addition a resonant study $B_{1g}$ pair-breaking peak and the $A_{1g}$ peak suggests that the $A_{1g}$ peak is not directly related to the d-wave superconducting gap amplitude. Comparison with trilayer Hg-1223 demonstrates the universal behavior of this two energy scales in optimally doped cuprates.

Evidence for two distinct energy scales in the Raman spectra of YBa2(CuNi)O6.95

We report low energy electronic Raman scattering from Ni-substituted YBa2Cu3O6.95 single crystals with Tc ranging from 92.5 K to 78 K. The fully symmetrical A1g channel and the B1g channel which is sensitive to the dx2-y2 gap maximum have been explored. The energy of the B1g pair-breaking peak remains constant under Ni doping while the energy of the A1g peak scales with Tc (EA1g/Tc=5). Our data show that the A1g peak tracks the magnetic resonance peak observed in inelastic neutron scattering yielding a key explanation to the long-standing problem of the origin the A1g peak.

Electronic Raman scattering on under-doped Hg-1223 high-Tc superconductors:investigations on the symmetry of the order parameter

In order to obtain high quality, reliable electronic Raman spectra of a high-Tc superconductor compound, we have studied strongly under-doped HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+d. This choice was made such as to i)minimize oxygen disorder in the Hg-plane generated by oxygen doping ii) avoid the need of phonon background subtraction from the raw data iii)eliminate traces of parasitic phases identified and monitored on the crystal surface. Under these experimental conditions we are able to present the pure electronic Raman response function in the B2g, B1g, A1g+B2g and A1g+B1g channels. The B2g spectrum exhibits a linear frequency dependence at low energy whereas the B1g one shows a cubic-like dependence. The B2g and B1g spectra display two well defined maxima at 5.6kBTc and 9kBTc respectively. In mixed A1g channels an intense electronic peak centered around 6.4 kBTc is observed. The low energy parts of the spectra correspond to the electronic response expected for a pure dx2-y2 gap symmetry and can be fitted up to the gap energy for the B1g channel. However, in the upper parts, the relative position of the B1g and B2g peaks needs expanding the B2g Raman vertex to second order Fermi surface harmonics to fit the data with the dx2-y2 model. The sharper and more intense A1g peak appears to challenge the Coulomb screening efficiency present for this channel. As compared to previous data on more optimally doped, less stoichiometric Hg-1223 compounds, this work reconciles the electronic Raman spectra of under- doped Hg-1223 crystals with the dx2-y2 model, provided that the oxygen doping is not too strong. This apparent extreme sensitivity of the electronic Raman spectra to the low lying excitations induced by oxygen doping in the superconducting state is emphasized here and remains an open question.

Electronic Raman scattering in HgBa_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{8+δ} single crystals. Analysis of the superconducting state

Electronic Raman scattering measurements have been performed on $HgBa_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{8+δ} $ single crystals in the superconducting state. Pure electronic Raman spectra with no phonon structures hindering the analysis of the electronic continuum have been obtained. As a consequence, the spectra in the pure $B_{1g} $ and $B_{2g} $ symmetries are directly and reliably analyzed and the pure $A_{1g} $ contribution can be easily identified. Below the critical temperature $T_{c}, $ two electronic structures at $2Δ\sim 6.4 k_{B}T_{c} $ and $2Δ\sim 9.4 $ $k_{B}T_{c} $ are clearly seen. Both are observed simultaneously in pure $A_{1g} $ symmetry, the highest energy one being located at the energy of the $B_{1g} $ maximum. These two maxima disappear at $T_{c} $ and do not soften significantly as the temperature is raised up to $T_{c}. $ The low energy frequency dependence of the $B_{1g} $ electronic response is strongly linear, for various excitation lines in the 476.5 to 647.1 nm range. Such experimental data cannot be reconciled with a pure $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}} $ symmetry. Instead, they strongly advocate in favor of an anisotropic superconducting gap with two distinct gap maxima and of nodes existing outside the [110] and [1,$\bar{1}$,0] directions in {\bf k}-space. We discuss in detail the simplest order parameter compatible with our experimental findings.

Symmetry of the superconducting gap in $HgBa_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{6+δ}$ single crystals from electronic Raman scattering

Pure electronic Raman spectra with no phonon structures superimposed to the electronic continuum, are reported for the first time, in optimally doped $HgBa_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{6+δ} $ single crystals $(T_{c }=126 $ K). Our low temperature spectra (15 K) for the $A_{1g}$, $B_{1g} $ and $B_{2g} $ symmetries exhibit striking differences with previous data in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}. $ The shape of the spectra for the various symmetries cannot be fitted by Devereaux's $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}} $ calculations, but strongly suggests a $d_{x y } $ gap, with its minima in the [100] and [010] directions.
