Pulsation Models for Ultra-Low (Z=0.0004) Metallicity Classical Cepheids

Classical Cepheids are primary distance indicators playing a fundamental role in the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale. The possible dependence of their characteristic Period-Luminosity (PL) relation on chemical composition is still debated in the literature, and the behaviour of these pulsators at very low metallicity regimes is almost unexplored. In order to derive constraints on the application of the Period-Luminosity relation at low metal abundances, we investigate the properties of the few ultra-low metallicity (Z ~ 0.0004) Cepheids recently discovered in the Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy IZw18. To this purpose we have computed an updated and extended set of nonlinear convective models for Z=0.0004 and Y=0.24, spanning a wide range of stellar masses, and taking into account the evolutionary constraints for selected luminosity levels. As a result we are able to predict the topology of the instability strip, the variations of all the relevant quantities along the pulsation cycle, including the morphology of the light curves, the theoretical Period-Luminosity-Color, Period-Wesenheit and Period-Luminosity relations at such a low metallicity. For each of these relations we provide the appropriate coefficients for fundamental mode pulsators with Z=0.0004. By comparing these results with the properties of more metal rich Cepheids we find that the synthetic PL relations for Z=0.0004 are steeper than at higher Z, but similar to the Z=0.004 ones, thus suggesting a leveling off of the metallicity effect towards the lowest Zs.

Multi-Epoch HST Observations of IZw18: Characterization of Variable Stars at Ultra-Low Metallicities

Variable stars have been identified for the first time in the very metal-poor Blue Compact dwarf galaxy IZw18, using deep multi-band (F606W, F814W)time-series photometry obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We detected 34 candidate variable stars in the galaxy. We classify three of them as Classical Cepheids, with periods of 8.71, 125.0 and 130.3 days, respectively, and other two as long period variables with periodicities longer than a hundred days. These are the lowest metallicity Classical Cepheids known so far, thus providing the opportunity to explore and fit models of stellar pulsation fo Classical Cepheids at previously inaccessible metallicities. The period distribution of the confirmed Cepheids is markedly different from what is seen in other nearby galaxies, which is likely related to the star bursting nature of IZw18. By applying to the 8.71 days Cepheid theoretical Wesenheit (V,I) relations based on new pulsation models of Classical Cepheids specifically computed for the extremely low metallicity of this galaxy (Z=0.0004, Y=0.24), we estimate the distance modulus of IZw18 to be mu_0= 31.4pm0.2 D=19.0^{+1.8}_{-1.7}Mpc) for canonical models of Classical Cepheids, and of 31.2pm0.2 mag (D=17.4^{+1.6}_{-1.6}Mpc) using over luminous models. The theoretical modeling of the star's light curves provides mu_0=31.4pm0.1 mag, D=19.0^{+0.9}_{-0.9} Mpc, in good agreement with the results from the theoretical Wesenheit relations. These pulsation distances bracket the distance of 18.2pm1.5Mpc inferred by Aloisi et al. (2007) using the galaxy's Red Giant Branch Tip.

Hard Photodisintegration of a Proton Pair

We present a study of high energy photodisintegration of proton-pairs through the gamma + 3He -> p+p+n channel. Photon energies from 0.8 to 4.7 GeV were used in kinematics corresponding to a proton pair with high relative momentum and a neutron nearly at rest. The s-11 scaling of the cross section, as predicted by the constituent counting rule for two nucleon photodisintegration, was observed for the first time. The onset of the scaling is at a higher energy and the cross section is significantly lower than for deuteron (pn pair) photodisintegration. For photon energies below the scaling region, the scaled cross section was found to present a strong energy-dependent structure not observed in deuteron photodisintegration.

Cross sections and Rosenbluth separations in 1H(e, e'K+)Lambda up to Q2=2.35 GeV2

The kaon electroproduction reaction 1H(e,e'K+)Lambda was studied as a function of the virtual-photon four-momentum, Q2, total energy, W, and momentum transfer, t, for different values of the virtual- photon polarization parameter. Data were taken at electron beam energies ranging from 3.40 to 5.75 GeV. The center of mass cross section was determined for 21 kinematics corresponding to Q2 of 1.90 and 2.35 GeV2 and the longitudinal, sigmaL, and transverse, sigmaT, cross sections were separated using the Rosenbluth technique at fixed W and t. The separated cross sections reveal a flat energy dependence at forward kaon angles not satisfactorily described by existing electroproduction models. Influence of the kaon pole on the cross sections was investigated by adopting an off-shell form factor in the Regge model which better describes the observed energy dependence of sigmaT and sigmaL.

High Resolution Spectroscopy of 16N_Lambda by Electroproduction

An experimental study of the 16O(e,e'K^+)16N_Lambda reaction has been performed at Jefferson Lab. A thin film of falling water was used as a target. This permitted a simultaneous measurement of the p(e,e'K^+)Lambda,Sigma_0 exclusive reactions and a precise calibration of the energy scale. A ground-state binding energy of 13.76 +/- 0.16 MeV was obtained for 16N_Lambda with better precision than previous measurements on the mirror hypernucleus 16O_Lambda. Precise energies have been determined for peaks arising from a Lambda in s and p orbits coupled to the p_{1/2} and p_{3/2} hole states of the 15N core nucleus.

M32: Is There An Ancient, Metal-Poor Population?

We observed two fields near M32 with the ACS/HRC on board the Hubble Space Telescope, located at distances of about 1.8' and 5.4' (hereafter F1 and F2, respectively) from the center of M32. To obtain a very detailed and deep color-magnitude diagram (CMD) and to look for short period variability, we obtained time-series imaging of each field in 32-orbit-long exposures using the F435W (B) and F555W (V) filters, spanning a temporal range of 2 days per filter. We focus on our detection of variability on RR Lyrae variable stars, which represents the only way to obtain information about the presence of a very old population (larger than 10 Gyr) in M32 from optical data. Here we present results obtained from the detection of 31 RR Lyrae in these fields: 17 in F1 and 14 in F2.

Probing Cold Dense Nuclear Matter

The protons and neutrons in a nucleus can form strongly correlated nucleon pairs. Scattering experiments, where a proton is knocked-out of the nucleus with high momentum transfer and high missing momentum, show that in 12C the neutron-proton pairs are nearly twenty times as prevalent as proton-proton pairs and, by inference, neutron-neutron pairs. This difference between the types of pairs is due to the nature of the strong force and has implications for understanding cold dense nuclear systems such as neutron stars.

The Star Formation History and Extended Structure of the Hercules Milky Way Satellite

We present imaging of the recently discovered Hercules Milky Way satellite and its surrounding regions to study its structure, star formation history and to thoroughly search for signs of disruption. We robustly determine the distance, luminosity, size and morphology of Hercules utilizing a bootstrap approach to characterize our uncertainties. We derive a distance to Hercules of $133 \pm 6$ kpc via a comparison to empirical and theoretical isochrones. As previous studies have found, Hercules is very elongated, with $ε=0.67\pm0.03$ and a half light radius of $r_{h} \simeq 230$ pc. Using the color magnitude fitting package StarFISH, we determine that Hercules is old ($>12$ Gyr) and metal poor ($[Fe/H]\sim-2.0$), with a spread in metallicity, in agreement with previous spectroscopic work. We infer a total absolute magnitude of $M_V=-5.3\pm0.4$. Our innovative search for external Hercules structure both in the plane of the sky and along the line of sight yields some evidence that Hercules is embedded in a larger stream of stars. A clear stellar extension is seen to the Northwest with several additional candidate stellar overdensities along the position angle of Hercules out to $\sim$35' ($\sim$1.3 kpc). While the association of any of the individual stellar overdensities with Hercules is difficult to determine, we do show that the summed color magnitude diagram of all three is consistent with Hercules' stellar population. Finally, we estimate that any change in the distance to Hercules across its face is at most $\sim$6 kpc; and the data are consistent with Hercules being at the same distance throughout.

Quark-Hadron Duality in Neutron (3He) Spin Structure

We present experimental results of the first high-precision test of quark-hadron duality in the spin-structure function g_1 of the neutron and $^3$He using a polarized 3He target in the four-momentum-transfer-squared range from 0.7 to 4.0 (GeV/c)^2. Global duality is observed for the spin-structure function g_1 down to at least Q^2 = 1.8 (GeV/c)^2 in both targets. We have also formed the photon-nucleon asymmetry A_1 in the resonance region for 3He and found no strong Q^2-dependence above 2.2 (GeV/c)^2.

Modified Chaplygin Gas as Scalar Field and Holographic Dark Energy Model

We study the correspondence between field theoretic and holographic dark energy density of the universe with the modified Chaplygin gas (MCG) respectively both in a flat and non-flat FRW universe. We present an equivalent representation of the MCG with a homogeneous minimally coupled scalar field by constructing the corresponding potential. A new scalar field potential is obtained here which is physically realistic and important for cosmological model building. In addition we also present holographic dark energy model described by the MCG. The dynamics of the corresponding holographic dark energy field is determined by reconstructing the potential in a non-flat universe. The stability of the holographic dark energy in this case in a non-flat universe is also discussed.

3He Spin-Dependent Cross Sections and Sum Rules

We present a measurement of the spin-dependent cross sections for the \vec{^3He}(\vec{e},e')X} reaction in the quasielastic and resonance regions at four-momentum transfer 0.1 < Q^2< 0.9 GeV^2. The spin-structure functions have been extracted and used to evaluate the nuclear Burkhardt--Cottingham and extended GDH sum rules for the first time. Impulse approximation and exact three-body Faddeev calculations are also compared to the data in the quasielastic region.

Holographic Dark Energy Model with Modified Generalized Chaplygin Gas

We present a holographic dark energy model of the universe considering modified generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG). The modified GCG behaves as an ordinary barotropic fluid in the early epoch when the universe was tiny but behaves subsequently as a $Λ$CDM model at late epoch. An equivalent model with scalar field is obtained here by constructing the corresponding potential. The holographic dark energy is identified with the modified GCG and we determine the corresponding holographic dark energy field and its potential. The stability of the holographic dark energy in this case is also discussed.

I Zw 18 revisited with HST/ACS and Cepheids: New Distance and Age

We present new V and I-band HST/ACS photometry of I Zw 18, the most metal-poor blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy in the nearby universe. It has been argued in the past that I Zw 18 is a very young system that started forming stars only < 500 Myr ago, but other work has hinted that older (> 1 Gyr) red giant branch (RGB) stars may also exist. Our new data, once combined with archival HST/ACS data, provide a deep and uncontaminated optical color-magnitude diagram (CMD) that now strongly indicates an RGB. The RGB tip (TRGB) magnitude yields a distance modulus (m-M)_0 = 31.30 +/- 0.17, i.e., D = 18.2 +/- 1.5 Mpc. The time-series nature of our observations allows us to also detect and characterize for the first time three classical Cepheids in I~Zw~18. The time-averaged Cepheid and magnitudes are compared to the VI reddening-free Wesenheit relation predicted from new non-linear pulsation models specifically calculated at the metallicity of I Zw 18. For the one bona-fide classical Cepheid with a period of 8.63 days this implies a distance modulus (m-M)_0 = 31.42 +/- 0.26. The other two Cepheids have unusually long periods (125.0 and 129.8 d) but are consistent with this distance. The coherent picture that emerges is that I Zw 18 is older and farther away than previously believed. This rules out the possibility that I Zw 18 is a truly primordial galaxy formed recently (z < 0.1) in the local universe.

High Resolution Spectroscopy of 12B_Lambda by Electroproduction

An experiment measuring electroproduction of hypernuclei has been performed in Hall A at Jefferson Lab on a $^{12}$C target. In order to increase counting rates and provide unambiguous kaon identification two superconducting septum magnets and a Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) were added to the Hall A standard equipment. An unprecedented energy resolution of less than 700 keV FWHM has been achieved. Thus, the observed \lam{12}{B} spectrum shows for the first time identifiable strength in the core-excited region between the ground-state {\it s}-wave $Λ$ peak and the 11 MeV {\it p}-wave $Λ$ peak.

A Search for Sigma^0_5, N^0_5 and Theta^++ Pentaquark States

A high-resolution (sigma_instr. = 1.5 MeV) search for narrow states (Gamma < 10 MeV) with masses of M_x approx 1500-1850 MeV in ep -> e'K^+ X, e'K^- X and e' pi^+ X electroproduction at small angles and low Q^2 was performed. These states would be candidate partner states of the reported Theta^+(1540) pentaquark. No statistically significant signal was observed in any of the channels at 90% C.L. Upper limits on forward production were determined to be between 0.7% and 4.2% of the Lambda(1520) production cross section, depending on the channel and the assumed mass and width of the state.

Leo A: A Late-Blooming Survivor of the Epoch of Reionization in the Local Group

As part of a major program to use isolated Local Group dwarf galaxies as near-field probes of cosmology, we have obtained deep images of the dwarf irregular galaxy Leo A with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. From these images we have constructed a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) reaching apparent [absolute] magnitudes of (M475, M814) > (29.0 [+4.4], 27.9 [+3.4]), the deepest ever achieved for any irregular galaxy beyond the Magellanic Clouds. We derive the star-formation rate (SFR) as a function of time over the entire history of the galaxy. We find that over 90% of all the star formation that ever occurred in Leo A happened more recently than 8 Gyr ago. The CMD shows only a very small amount of star formation in the first few billion years after the Big Bang; a possible burst at the oldest ages cannot be claimed with high confidence. The peak SFR occurred ~1.5-4 Gyr ago, at a level 5-10 times the current value. Our modelling indicates that Leo A has experienced very little metallicity evolution; the mean inferred metallicity is consistent with measurements of the present-day gas-phase oxygen abundance. We cannot exclude a scenario in which ALL of the ancient star formation occurred prior to the end of the era of reionization, but it seems unlikely that the lack of star formation prior to ~8 Gyr ago was due to early loss or exhaustion of the in situ gas reservoir.

A New Deep HST/ACS CMD of I Zw 18: Evidence for Red Giant Branch Stars

We present results from new deep HST/ACS photometry of I Zw 18, the most metal-poor blue compact dwarf galaxy in the nearby universe. It has been previously argued that this is a very young system that started forming stars only < 500 Myr ago, but other work has hinted that older (> 1 Gyr) red giant branch (RGB) stars may exist in this galaxy. Our deeper data indeed reveal evidence for an RGB. Underlying old (> 1 Gyr) populations are therefore present in even the most metal-poor systems, implying that star formation started at z > 0.1. The RGB tip (TRGB) magnitude and the properties of Cepheid variables identified from our program indicate that I Zw 18 is farther away (D = 19.0 +/- 1.8 Mpc) than previously believed.

Angular dependence of recoil proton polarization in high-energy γd \to p n

We measured the angular dependence of the three recoil proton polarization components in two-body photodisintegration of the deuteron at a photon energy of 2 GeV. These new data provide a benchmark for calculations based on quantum chromodynamics. Two of the five existing models have made predictions of polarization observables. Both explain the longitudinal polarization transfer satisfactorily.. Transverse polarizations are not well described, but suggest isovector dominance.
