Exact Stark analytical function for Hα line based on the FFM Model related with plasma parameters

Optical Emission Spectroscopy is a widely used technique for plasma diagnosis, with particular interest in hydrogen atomic emission due to its prevalence in plasmas. However, accurately determining plasma parameters like electron density, electron temperature, and gas temperature starting from the experimental profiles remains a challenge. This paper introduces a comprehensive model for Stark broadening of the Hα line in a wide range of plasma conditions, addressing the limitations of existing analytical expressions for line shapes. The proposed model encompasses the full splitting of the transition into fifteen Lorentzian profiles and electric micro-field fluctuations surrounding the emitting atoms due to collisions with charged particles. Starting from accurate spectral data obtained from realistic computer simulations, fitting parameters of the model, have been obtained by using an optimization method based on a genetic algorithm. The set of parameters of the model are reported for a wide range of plasma conditions. The behavior of these parameters is analyzed to understand their dependence in terms of the electron density and temperature and gas density of the plasma. The model parameters here obtained constitute a useful tool in plasma diagnosis to obtaining the values of the physical parameters of the plasma starting from the experimental profiles.

Mg impurity in helium droplets

Within the diffusion Monte Carlo approach, we have determined the structure of isotopically pure and mixed helium droplets doped with one magnesium atom. For pure 4He clusters, our results confirm those of M. Mella et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 123, 054328 (2005)] that the impurity experiences a transition from a surface to a bulk location as the number of helium atoms in the droplet increases. Contrarily, for pure 3He clusters Mg resides in the bulk of the droplet due to the smaller surface tension of this isotope. Results for mixed droplets are presented. We have also obtained the absorption spectrum of Mg around the 3s3p 1P_1 <-- 3s2 1S_0 transition.

Density functional study of two-dimensional He-4 clusters

Binding energies and density profiles of two-dimensional systems of liquid He-4 with different geometries are studied by means of a zero-range density functional adjusted to reproduce the line tension obtained in a previous diffusion Monte Carlo calculation (lambda_{DMC}=0.121 K/A). It is shown that this density functional provides accurate results for the binding energy of large clusters with a reasonable computational effort.

Projected multicluster model with Jastrow and linear state dependent correlations for $12 \leq A \leq 16$ nuclei

Variational wave functions based on a Margenau-Brink cluster model with short range and state dependent correlations, and angular momentum projection are obtained for some nuclei with $12 \leq A \leq 16$. The calculations have been carried out starting from the nucleon-nucleon interaction by using the Variational Monte Carlo method. The configuration used consists of three alpha clusters located at the apexes of an equilateral triangle, and an additional cluster, not necessarily of alpha type, forming a tetrahedron. This cluster is located at the top of its height. Short-range and state dependent correlations are included by means of a central Jastrow factor and a linear operatorial correlation factor respectively. Angular momentum projection is performed by using the Peierls-Yoccoz operators. Optimal structures are obtained for all the nuclei studied. Some aspects of our methodology have been tested by comparing with previous calculations carried out without short range correlations. The binding energy, the root mean square radius, and the one- and two-body densities are reported. The effects of correlations on both the energy and the nucleon distribution are analyzed systematically.

Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo calculation of ground state properties of neutron drops

The Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo method has been applied to simulate droplets of 7 and 8 neutrons. Results for realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, which include tensor, spin--orbit and three--body forces, plus a standard one--body confining potential, have been compared with analogous calculations obtained with Green's Function Monte Carlo methods. We have studied the dependence of the binding energy, the one--body density and the spin--orbit splittings of $^7n$ on the depth of the confining potential. The results obtained show an overall agreement between the two quantum Monte Carlo methods, although there persist differences in the evaluation of spin--orbit forces, as previously indicated by bulk neutron matter calculations. Energy density functional models, largely used in astrophysical applications, seem to provide results significantly different from those of quantum simulations. Given its scaling behavior in the number of nucleons, the Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo method seems to be one of the best candidate to perform {\sl ab initio} calculations on neutron rich nuclei.

Two-dimensional clusters of liquid 4-He

The binding energies of two-dimensional clusters (puddles) of $^4$He are calculated in the framework of the diffusion Monte Carlo method. The results are very well fitted by a mass formula in powers of $x=N^{-1/2}$, where $N$ is the number of particles. The analysis of the mass formula allows for the extraction of the line tension, which turns out to be 0.121 K/A. Sizes and density profiles of the puddles are also reported.

Parameterized optimized effective potential for atoms

The optimized effective potential equations for atoms have been solved by parameterizing the potential. The expansion is tailored to fulfill the known asymptotic behavior of the effective potential at both short and long distances. Both single configuration and multi configuration trial wave functions are implemented. Applications to several atomic systems are presented improving previous works. The results here obtained are very close to those calculated in either the Hartree-Fock and the multi configurational Hartree-Fock framework.

Spin-orbit induced backflow in neutron matter with auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo

The energy per particle of zero-temperature neutron matter is investigated, with particular emphasis on the role of the $\vec L\cdot\vec S$ interaction. An analysis of the importance of explicit spin--orbit correlations in the description of the system is carried out by the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo method. The improved nodal structure of the guiding function, constructed by explicitly considering these correlations, lowers the energy. The proposed spin--backflow orbitals can conveniently be used also in Green's Function Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei.

Neutron matter at zero temperature with auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo

The recently developed auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo method is applied to compute the equation of state and the compressibility of neutron matter. By combining diffusion Monte Carlo for the spatial degrees of freedom and auxiliary field Monte Carlo to separate the spin-isospin operators, quantum Monte Carlo can be used to simulate the ground state of many nucleon systems $(A\alt 100)$. We use a path constraint to control the fermion sign problem. We have made simulations for realistic interactions, which include tensor and spin--orbit two--body potentials as well as three-nucleon forces. The Argonne $v_8'$ and $v_6'$ two nucleon potentials plus the Urbana or Illinois three-nucleon potentials have been used in our calculations. We compare with fermion hypernetted chain results. We report results of a Periodic Box--FHNC calculation, which is also used to estimate the finite size corrections to our quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Our AFDMC results for $v_6$ models of pure neutron matter are in reasonably good agreement with equivalent Correlated Basis Function (CBF) calculations, providing energies per particle which are slightly lower than the CBF ones. However, the inclusion of the spin--orbit force leads to quite different results particularly at relatively high densities. The resulting equation of state from AFDMC calculations is harder than the one from previous Fermi hypernetted chain studies commonly used to determine the neutron star structure.

Excited states of beryllium atom from explicitly correlated wave functions

A study of the first excited states of beryllium atom starting from explicitly correlated wave functions is carried out. Several properties are obtained and discussed focusing on the analysis of the Hund's rules in terms of the single--particle and electron pair intracule and extracule densities. A systematic study of the differences on the electronic distributions of the singlet and triplet states is carried out. The trial wave function used to describe the different bound states consists of a generalized Jastrow-type correlation factor times a configuration interaction model wave function. This model wave function has been fixed by using a generalization of the optimized effective potential method to deal with multiconfiguration wave functions. The optimization of the wave function and the calculation of the different quantities is carried out by means of the Variational Monte Carlo method.

Number--conserving model for boson pairing

An independent pair ansatz is developed for the many body wavefunction of dilute Bose systems. The pair correlation is optimized by minimizing the expectation value of the full hamiltonian (rather than the truncated Bogoliubov one) providing a rigorous energy upper bound. In contrast with the Jastrow model, hypernetted chain theory provides closed-form exactly solvable equations for the optimized pair correlation. The model involves both condensate and coherent pairing with number conservation and kinetic energy sum rules satisfied exactly and the compressibility sum rule obeyed at low density. We compute, for bulk boson matter at a given density and zero temperature, (i) the two--body distribution function, (ii) the energy per particle, (iii) the sound velocity, (iv) the chemical potential, (v) the momentum distribution and its condensate fraction and (vi) the pairing function, which quantifies the ODLRO resulting from the structural properties of the two--particle density matrix. The connections with the low--density expansion and Bogoliubov theory are analyzed at different density values, including the density and scattering length regime of interest of trapped-atoms Bose--Einstein condensates. Comparison with the available Diffusion Monte Carlo results is also made.

Quadratic diffusion Monte Carlo and pure estimators for atoms

The implementation and reliability of a quadratic diffusion Monte Carlo method for the study of ground-state properties of atoms are discussed. We show in the simple yet non-trivial calculation of the binding energy of the Li atom that the method presented is effectively second-order in the time step. The fulfilment of the expected quadratic behavior relies on some basic requirements of the trial wave function used for importance sampling, in the context of the fixed-node approximation. Expectation values of radial operators are calculated by means of a pure estimation based on the forward walking methodology. It is shown that accurate results without extrapolation errors can be obtained with a pure algorithm that can be easily implemented in any previous diffusion Monte Carlo program.

Spin susceptibility of neutron matter at zero temperature

The Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo method is applied to compute the spin susceptibility and the compressibility of neutron matter at zero temperature. Results are given for realistic interactions which include both a two-body potential of the Argonne type and the Urbana IX three-body potential. Simulations have been carried out for about 60 neutrons. We find an overall reduction of the spin susceptibilty by about a factor 3 with respect to the Pauli susceptibility for a wide range of densities. Results for the compressibility of neutron matter are also presented and compared with other available estimates obtained for semirealistic nucleon-nucleon interactions by using other techniques.
