Precise measurement of prompt photon emission for carbon ion therapy

Proton and carbon ion therapy is an emerging technique used for the treatment of solid cancers. The monitoring of the dose delivered during such treatments is still a matter of research. A possible technique exploits the information provided by single photon emission from nuclear decays induced by the irradiation. This paper reports the measurements of the spectrum and rate of such photons produced from the interaction of a 80 MeV/u fully stripped carbon ion beam at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of INFN, Catania, with a Poly-methyl methacrylate target. The differential production rate for photons with energy E > 2 MeV and emitted at 90 degree is found to be $dN_γ/(dN_C dΩ)=(2.92\pm 0.19)\times 10^{-2}$sr$^{-1}$.

Performance of the LHCb muon system with cosmic rays

The LHCb Muon system performance is presented using cosmic ray events collected in 2009. These events allowed to test and optimize the detector configuration before the LHC start. The space and time alignment and the measurement of chamber efficiency, time resolution and cluster size are described in detail. The results are in agreement with the expected detector performance.

B Physics at LHC

Three experiments, among the LHC project, are getting ready to explore the b quark flavour sector. While ATLAS and CMS are general purpose experiments, where the study of B mesons is going to proceed in parallel with the Higgs boson and supersymmetry searches, the LHCb experiment is devoted to B physics studies. The key parameters entering the physics analyses and the performances achieved in all the three experiments are presented. Given the large B physics program foreseen in the LHC experiments, the studies reported in this paper have been selected as those with higher likelihood to provide solid and interesting new results on Standard Model validation and New Physics processes search with early data.

B, D and K decays

With the advent of the LHC, we will be able to probe New Physics (NP) up to energy scales almost one order of magnitude larger than it has been possible with present accelerator facilities. While direct detection of new particles will be the main avenue to establish the presence of NP at the LHC, indirect searches will provide precious complementary information, since most probably it will not be possible to measure the full spectrum of new particles and their couplings through direct production. In particular, precision measurements and computations in the realm of flavour physics are expected to play a key role in constraining the unknown parameters of the Lagrangian of any NP model emerging from direct searches at the LHC. The aim of Working Group 2 was twofold: on one hand, to provide a coherent, up-to-date picture of the status of flavour physics before the start of the LHC; on the other hand, to initiate activities on the path towards integrating information on NP from high-pT and flavour data.

LHCb Level-0 Trigger Detectors

The calorimeter and muon systems are essential components to provide a trigger for the LHCb experiment. The calorimeter system comprises a scintillating pad detector and pre-shower, followed by electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters. The calorimeter system allows photons, electrons and hadrons to be identified, and their energy to be measured. The muon system consists of five measuring stations equipped with Multi-Wire Proportional Chambers (MWPCs) and triple-Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors, separated by iron filters. It allows the muons identification and transverse momentum measurement. The status of the two systems and their expected performance is presented.

On varieties which are uniruled by lines

Using the $\sharp$-minimal model program of uniruled varieties we show that for any pair $(X, \H)$ consisting of a reduced and irreducible variety $X$ of dimension $k \geq 3$ and a globally generated big line bundle $\H$ on $X$ with $d:= \H^k$ and $n:= h^0(X, \H)-1$ such that $d<2(n-k)-4$, then $X$ is uniruled of $\H$-degree one, except if $(k,d,n)=(3,27,19)$ and a ${\sharp}$-minimal model of $(X, \H)$ is $(\PP^3,Ø_{\PP^3}(3))$. We also show that the bound is optimal for threefolds.

Semileptonic B Decays in Babar

BaBar measurements involving semileptonic decays of B mesons are reviewed. Attention is focused on the extraction of |Vub| and |Vcb| elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Recent results of inclusive and exclusive approaches are presented.

|Vub| Measurements at B-Factories

The determination of the Vub element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing matrix plays a central role in testing the Standard Model (SM) interpretation of CP violation. Measurements at B-Factories are contributing with results that rely on different theoretical assumptions. Recent inclusive and exclusive results from CLEO, BaBar and BELLE are reviewed.
