Strip plasmons in a two-dimensional electron gas with grounded electrodes

Plasmons in two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) strips with grounded electrodes (a gate or side contacts) are investigated. We consider two systems: (a) the 2DEG strip with a highly conducting gate and (b) the 2DEG strip with semi-infinite highly conducting side contacts. The systems are described by hydrodynamic equations coupled with the Poisson equation. Dispersion relations and ac electric potential distributions are obtained. We find the plasmon modes whose potential distributions, and hence electron density, are localized to the edges of the strip when the wave number of plasmons in the direction parallel to the strip is large. Frequencies of these strip modes are lower than those of infinite two-dimensional plasmons. The presence of grounded electrode(s) significantly modifies the plasmon dispersion relations.

Electric-Field Breakdown of Absolute Negative Conductivity and Supersonic Streams in Two-Dimensional Electron Systems with Zero Resistance/Conductance States

We calculate the current-voltage characteristic of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) subjected to a magnetic field at strong electric fields. The interaction of electrons with piezoelectric acoustic phonons is considered as a major scattering mechanism governing the current-voltage characteristic. It is shown that at a sufficiently strong electric field corresponding to the Hall drift velocity exceeding the velocity of sound, the dissipative current exhibits an overshoot. The overshoot of the dissipative current can result in a breakdown of the absolute negative conductivity caused by microwave irradiation and, therefore, substantially effect the formation of the domain structures with the zero-resistance and zero-conductance states and supersonic electron streams.

Ground State Property of an Alternating Spin Ladder Involving Two Kinds of Inter-Chain Interactions

The ground state property of the alternating spin ladder is studied in the case that the system involves an antiferromagnetic intra-chain interaction as well as two kinds of inter-chain interactions; one is between spins of the same magnitude and the other is between spins with different magnitudes. The calculation has been carried out by the exact diagonalization method. As a consequence of the competition among interactions, the system is revealed to show an interesting variety of phases in the ground state property. Its phase diagram is exhibited in the parameter space of the system. We find that, however small the total amount of the inter-chain interactions is, the ferrimagnetic ground state becomes unstable in a certain region. In this case, which of the ferrimagnetic and the singlet ground state to appear is determined only by the ratio between the inter-chain interactions regardless of their total amount. The nature of two phases appearing in the singlet region of the phase diagram and the type of the phase transition between them are also discussed. The results are ensured by comparing with those of obtained in other models which are contained in our model as special limiting cases.
