Irreducibility criterion for certain trinomials

In this article we study the irreducibility of polynomials of the form $x^n+ε_1 x^m+p^kε_2$, $p$ being a prime number. We will show that they are irreducible for $m=1$. We have also provided the cyclotomic factors and reducibility criterion for trinomials of the form $x^n+ε_1x^m+ε_2$, where $ε_i\in \{\, -1,+1\,\}$. This corrects few of the existing results of W. Ljuggren's on $x^n+ε_1x^m+ε_2$.

An irreducibility criterion for polynomials over integers

In this article, we consider the polynomials of the form $f(x)=a_0+a_1x+a_2x^2+\cdots+a_nx^n\in \mathbb{Z}[x],$ where $|a_0|=|a_1|+\dots+|a_n|$ and $|a_0|$ is a prime. We show that these polynomials have a cyclotomic factor whenever reducible. As a consequence, we give a simple procedure for checking the irreducibility of trinomials of this form and separability criterion for certain quadrinomials.

A Survey on Fixed Divisors

In this article, we compile the work done by various mathematicians on the topic of the fixed divisor of a polynomial. This article explains most of the results concisely and is intended to be an exhaustive survey. We present the results on fixed divisors in various algebraic settings as well as the applications of fixed divisors to various algebraic and number theoretic problems. The work is presented in an orderly fashion so as to start from the simplest case of $\Z,$ progressively leading up to the case of Dedekind domains. We also ask a few open questions according to their context, which may give impetus to the reader to work further in this direction. We describe various bounds for fixed divisors as well as the connection of fixed divisors with different notions in the ring of integer-valued polynomials. Finally, we suggest how the generalization of the ring of integer-valued polynomials in the case of the ring of $n \times n$ matrices over $\Z$ (or Dedekind domain) could lead to the generalization of fixed divisors in that setting.

Binary strings of length $n$ with $x$ zeros and longest $k$-runs of zeros

In this paper, we study $F_{n}(x,k)$, the number of binary strings of length $n$ containing $x$ zeros and a longest subword of $k$ zeros. A recurrence relation for $F_{n}(x,k)$ is derived. We expressed few known numbers like Fibonacci, triangular, number of binary strings of length $n$ without $r$-runs of ones and number of compositions of $n+1$ with largest summand $k+1$ in terms of $F_{n}(x,k).$ Similar results and applications were obtained for F$_{n}(x,k),$ the number of all palindromic binary strings of length $n$ containing $x$ zeros and longest $k$-runs of zeros.

Exponents of primitive symmetric companion matrices

A {\it symmetric companion matrix} is a matrix of the form $A +A^T$ where $A$ is a companion matrix all of whose entries are in $\{0,1\}$ and $A^T$ is the transpose of $A.$ In this paper, we find the total number of primitive and the total number of imprimitive symmetric companion matrices. We establish formulas to compute the exponent of every primitive symmetric companion matrix. Hence the exponent set for the class of primitive symmetric companion matrices is completely characterized. We also obtain the number of primitive symmetric companion matrices with a given exponent for certain cases.

A Note on the Exponents of Primitive Companion Matrices

A nonnegative matrix $A$ is said to be {\it primitive} if for some positive integer $m$, entries in $A^m$ are positive, notationally represented as $A^m>0.$ The smallest such $m$ is called the {\it exponent} of $A$, denoted $exp(A).$ For the class of primitive companion matrices $X$, we find $exp(A)$ for certain $A \in X.$ Thereafter, we find certain numbers in $E_n(X)$, where $E_n(X)=\{m \in \N : \text{there exists an $n \times n$ matrix $A$ in $X$ with} \; exp(A)=m\}$. At the end we propose open problems for further research.

Fixed Divisor of a Multivariate Polynomial and Generalized Factorials in Several Variables

We define new generalized factorials in several variables over an arbitrary subset $\underline{S} \subseteq R^n,$ where $R$ is a Dedekind domain and $n$ is a positive integer. We then study the properties of the fixed divisor $d(\underline{S},f)$ of a multivariate polynomial $f \in R[x_1,x_2, \ldots, x_n]$. We generalize the results of Polya, Bhargava, Gunji & McQuillan and strengthen that of Evrard, all of which relate the fixed divisor to generalized factorials of $\underline{S}$. We also express $d(\underline{S},f)$ in terms of the images $f(\underline{a})$ of finitely many elements $\underline{a} \in R^n$, generalizing a result of Hensel, and in terms of the coefficients of $f$ under explicit bases.

Removal of Narrowband Interference (PLI in ECG Signal) Using Ramanujan Periodic Transform (RPT)

Suppression of interference from narrowband frequency signals play vital role in many signal processing and communication applications. A transform based method for suppression of narrow band interference in a biomedical signal is proposed. As a specific example Electrocardiogram (ECG) is considered for the analysis. ECG is one of the widely used biomedical signal. ECG signal is often contaminated with baseline wander noise, powerline interference (PLI) and artifacts (bioelectric signals), which complicates the processing of raw ECG signal. This work proposes an approach using Ramanujan periodic transform for reducing PLI and is tested on a subject data from MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database. A sum ($E$) of Euclidean error per block ($e_i$) is used as measure to quantify the suppression capability of RPT and notch filter based methods. The transformation is performed for different lengths ($N$), namely $36$, $72$, $108$, $144$, $180$. Every doubling of $N$-points results in $50{\%}$ reduction in error ($E$).

Adjacency Algebra of Unitary Cayley Graph

A few properties of unitary Cayley graphs are explored using their eigenvalues. It is shown that the adjacency algebra of a unitary Cayley graph is a coherent algebra. Finally, a class of unitary Cayley graphs that are distance regular are also obtained.

Representation of Cyclotomic Fields and Their Subfields

Let $\K$ be a finite extension of a characteristic zero field $\F$. We say that the pair of $n\times n$ matrices $(A,B)$ over $\F$ represents $\K$ if $\K \cong \F[A]/< B >$ where $\F[A]$ denotes the smallest subalgebra of $M_n(\F)$ containing $A$ and $< B >$ is an ideal in $\F[A]$ generated by $B$. In particular, $A$ is said to represent the field $\K$ if there exists an irreducible polynomial $q(x)\in \F[x]$ which divides the minimal polynomial of $A$ and $\K \cong \F[A]/< q(A) >$. In this paper, we identify the smallest circulant-matrix representation for any subfield of a cyclotomic field. Furthermore, if $p$ is any prime and $\K$ is a subfield of the $p$-th cyclotomic field, then we obtain a zero-one circulant matrix $A$ of size $p\times p$ such that $(A,\J)$ represents $\K$, where $\J$ is the matrix with all entries 1. In case, the integer $n$ has at most two distinct prime factors, we find the smallest 0-1 companion-matrix that represents the $n$-th cyclotomic field. We also find bounds on the size of such companion matrices when $n$ has more than two prime factors.

Non-singular circulant graphs and digraphs

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a few classes of known circulant graphs and/or digraphs to be singular. The above graph classes are generalized to $(r,s,t)$-digraphs for non-negative integers $r,s$ and $t$, and the digraph $C_n^{i,j,k,l}$, with certain restrictions. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the digraphs $C_n^{i,j,k,l}$ to be singular. Some necessary conditions are given under which the $(r,s,t)$-digraphs are singular.

The lowest degree $0,1$-polynomial divisible by cyclotomic polynomial

Let $n$ be an even positive integer with at most three distinct prime factors and let $\ze_n$ be a primitive $n$-th root of unity. In this study, we made an attempt to find the lowest-degree $0,1$-polynomial $f(x) \in \Q[x]$ having at least three terms such that $f(\ze_n)$ is a minimal vanishing sum of the $n$-th roots of unity.

Pattern polynomial graphs

A graph $X$ is said to be a pattern polynomial graph if its adjacency algebra is a coherent algebra. In this study we will find a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to be a pattern polynomial graph. Some of the properties of the graphs which are polynomials in the pattern polynomial graph have been studied. We also identify known graph classes which are pattern polynomial graphs.
