Quantitative characterization of several entanglement detection criteria

Quantitative characterization of different entanglement detection criteria for bipartite systems is presented. We review the implication sequence of these criteria and then numerically estimate volume ratios between criteria non-violating quantum states and all quantum states. The numerical approach is based on the hit-and-run algorithm, which is applied to the convex set of all quantum states embedded into a Euclidean vector space of the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product. We demonstrate that reduction, majorization, and the R\'enyi-entropy-based criteria are very ineffective compared to the positive partial transpose. In the case of the R\'enyi-entropy-based criterion, we show that the ratio of detectable entanglement increases with the order of the R\'enyi entropy.

Entanglement in bipartite quantum systems: Euclidean volume ratios and detectability by Bell inequalities

Euclidean volume ratios between quantum states with positive partial transpose and all quantum states in bipartite systems are investigated. These ratios allow a quantitative exploration of the typicality of entanglement and of its detectability by Bell inequalities. For this purpose a new numerical approach is developed. It is based on the Peres-Horodecki criterion, on a characterization of the convex set of quantum states by inequalities resulting from Newton identities and from Descartes' rule of signs, and on a numerical approach involving the multiphase Monte Carlo method and the hit-and-run algorithm. This approach confirms not only recent analytical and numerical results on two-qubit, qubit--qutrit, and qubit--four-level qudit states but also allows for a numerically reliable numerical treatment of so far unexplored qutrit--qutrit states. Based on this numerical approach with the help of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality and the Collins-Gisin inequality the degree of detectability of entanglement is investigated for two-qubit quantum states. It is investigated quantitatively to which extent a combined test of both Bell inequalities can increase the detectability of entanglement beyond what is achievable by each of these inequalities separately.

Electron-phonon coupling and superconductivity-induced distortion of the phonon lineshape in V$_3$Si

Phonon measurements in the A15-type superconductors were complicated in the past because of the unavailability of large single crystals for inelastic neutron scattering, e.g., in the case of Nb$_3$Sn, or unfavorable neutron scattering properties in the case of V$_3$Si. Hence, only few studies of the lattice dynamical properties with momentum resolved methods were published, in particular below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. Here, we overcome these problems by employing inelastic x-ray scattering and report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of lattice dynamics in V$_3$Si with the focus on the temperature-dependent properties of low-energy acoustic phonon modes in several high-symmetry directions. We paid particular attention to the evolution of the soft phonon mode of the structural phase transition observed in our sample at $T_s=18.9\,\rm{K}$, i.e., just above the measured superconducting phase transition at $T_c=16.8\,\rm{K}$. Theoretically, we predict lattice dynamics including electron-phonon coupling based on density-functional-perturbation theory and discuss the relevance of the soft phonon mode with regard to the value of $T_c$. Furthermore, we explain superconductivityinduced anomalies in the lineshape of several acoustic phonon modes using a model proposed by Allen et al., [Phys. Rev. B 56, 5552 (1997)].

Beam Dynamics Studies for a High Current Ion Injector

Recent ion source developments resulted in the generation of high brilliance, high current beams of protons and light ions. After extraction and transport the beams with large internal space charge forces have to be captured, bunched and preaccelerated for the injection into the following driver part of a new generation of high intensity beam facilities for neutron sources, energy production, transmutation e.g. A combination of RFQ and DTL is considered to be a good solution for such a high current ion injector. Some preliminary beam dynamics layouts have been investigated by multiparticle simulations. Basic parameters like frequency, ion energy and sparking have been varied for the International Fusion Material Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) scenario as an example. The main interest was directed to high transmission, low losses and emittance conservation. The beam matching to the RFQ is shortly discussed as well as the matching between RFQ and DTL.
